Crazy Rich Asians
Crazy Rich Asians | Kevin Kwan
Crazy Rich Asians is the outrageously funny debut novel about three super-rich, pedigreed Chinese families and the gossip, backbiting, and scheming that occurs when the heir to one of the most massive fortunes in Asia brings home his ABC (American-born Chinese) girlfriend to the wedding of the season. When Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, she envisions a humble family home, long drives to explore the island, and quality time with the man she might one day marry. What she doesn't know is that Nick's family home happens to look like a palace, that she'll ride in more private planes than cars, and that with one of Asia's most eligible bachelors on her arm, Rachel might as well have a target on her back. Initiated into a world of dynastic splendor beyond imagination, Rachel meets Astrid, the It Girl of Singapore society; Eddie, whose family practically lives in the pages of the Hong Kong socialite magazines; and Eleanor, Nick's formidable mother, a woman who has very strong feelings about who her son should--and should not--marry. Uproarious, addictive, and filled with jaw-dropping opulence, Crazy Rich Asians is an insider's look at the Asian JetSet; a perfect depiction of the clash between old money and new money; between Overseas Chinese and Mainland Chinese; and a fabulous novel about what it means to be young, in love, and gloriously, crazily rich.

I can not put this book down. Stayed up to 4:00am reading it last night. Determined to finish it today. I understand what my friend meant who gave me the book to read. “Don‘t read it hungry.” Living in Asia all the food descriptions gets your mouth watering.

Theres nothing like diving into the world of the insanely wealthy and realizing they have similar problems to those of us non billionaires. This trilogy kept me interested and rooting for the primary couple.

Genre: Novel

Date Started: September 18, 2019

Date Completed: October 22, 2019

How did you choose this book: I watched the movie, and realized there was a book. I want to compare which format gives more details.

Write a brief summary of the novel; who was the protagonist; what was his/her problem and how was the problem resolved?

Loved this! I read the book after watching the movie and realized that the book was about 1000 times better! I absolutely fell in love with this series and am glad that the movie introduced me to an author who captures his audience with vivid imagery and authentic real-life situations!

I almost bailed on this book halfway through. Had I not seen the movie and known things ended ok (albeit different, in the movie) I would have.
The scenes following the conservative, rich characters were EXCRUCIATING. Hearing them get scolded made it worth carrying on.
A rare instance where the movie was better; despite losing rich backstory in adaptation we don't have to spend a much time listening to high-society snobs, much to my relief

⭐⭐⭐ I had a hard time finishing this one. As much as I loved Rachel and Nick's story, I found there were way too many characters. I couldn't remember who half of them were. Maybe if I would have been already familiar with Asian family lineage and clans it would have made it clearer. #crazyrichasians #kevinkwan

If you want a book about rich people complaining about being rich, this is your book. It took me forever to complete this book. I felt the whole book was just rich people complaining about being rich. It was intolerable.
On a side note, I enjoyed the movie. 😂

Unfortunately, this book was not for me. While I enjoyed the idea of a look at a new-to-me part of Asian society, I did not enjoy the execution. The plot was weighed down by incessant descriptions of every outfit, watch, and car in view. I felt like most of the characters, the rich women in particular, were mean and catty and self-absorbed. I rolled my eyes throughout and wanted it to be over well before the not-an-ending.

Djspens I felt the same! 2mo
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Agreed. I think the opulence would suit the movie though, because you could show it rather than having the lengthy descriptions. 2mo
GypsyKat This is the whole reason that I haven‘t read it yet. It looks like some kind of Keeping Up With the Asian Kardashian‘s book. I don‘t know, but it‘s super low on my TBR. 2mo

JulietBooks Thanks for the review. I'm planning to read Kevin Kwan's other book: Rich People Problems. Hopefully, it'll be good... lol 2mo
twohectobooks @JulietBooks i think that‘s one of the sequels to this, isn‘t it? 2mo
JulietBooks @twohectobooks Well, what I know for sure is that 87% of the readers liked it. 🤓 2mo
thebluestocking @Djspens I‘m glad I‘m not alone, but I did want to like this better! 💙 2mo
thebluestocking @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I actually saw the movie a few months ago, and it definitely did work better to visually show the wealth. Also, the movie completely changes the ending. 💙 (edited) 2mo
thebluestocking @JulietBooks I think the whole trilogy is fairly well-liked in general. Litsy says 78% of people liked this one. If you start on book third one, I‘d definitely read a Wikipedia summary of the first two so you can catch up. 💙 2mo
thebluestocking @twohectobooks You‘re right; it‘s the third one in this trilogy. I‘m guessing the ratings for it are higher, since the people who didn‘t love the first one are unlikely to read the second and third. 💙 2mo
thebluestocking @GypsyKat Ha! It definitely has those vibes. I can see people liking it if they can just pretend they‘re in a kind of fantasy world of rich people, but I don‘t want to be in that kind of fantasy. 💙 2mo
JulietBooks @thebluestocking @GypsyKat Darn... it's a trilogy? I guess I'll have to read it another time. 2mo
twohectobooks @JulietBooks fair enough! I really enjoyed the movie but have no plans to read the book because I think I‘d share @thebluestocking‘s issues with it. 2mo
Djspens @thebluestocking me too! I made it through the second book but couldn't make myself read the third. It's in my bookcase in case I ever. Get. That. Bored.... 2mo
SW-T According to an interview Kwan originally intended this to be an angry book about income inequality and the hypocrisy of people with too much money. Then he decided to make a comedy-satire instead. 2mo
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @thebluestocking oh! Interesting. Henry Golding is pretty dreamy, so I may have to watch it. 😋 2mo

Bailedbailed

I have this rule that when I reach 100 pages mark with a book I'll decide to either read it through or bail. This one I decided to bail. Just couldn't get into the story&characters at all. I felt like this book would have needed a bit more editing. I rarely leave books unfinished because I like to finish what I start but this just isn't for me. ☹

SaturnDoo YAY!!!Glad you're escaping from something you aren't enjoying!!Hoping your next read is just what you need. 😁❤ I truly wish I had abandoned this book instead of suffering through it 😂 3mo
Martta @SaturnDoo It was your comment that finally did it. 😁 I'm already enjoying my next read The Poison study. At least at this point it looks to be really good! 😊 3mo
theshrinkette I feel you. I struggled to get through this, and it was during the worst part of my reading slump, so I felt I HAD to get through it. One of the few times I've told people to stick to the movie. 3mo
Martta @theshrinkette I had the same sort of experience. I tried this as a way out of my reading slump. Didn't work so well. If I get the chance I'll totally try the movie. Feels like this story would work well as a light movie. 😁 3mo
SaturnDoo @Martta 👍👍this is why I ❤ Litsy. You are never alone. We respect and understand each others oponions regardless of the books popularity. We get that not every book isn't meant for everyone. I usually fall on the unpopular opinion side 🤣😂 3mo

I must say I'm considering abandoning this... I've read a bit over 100 pages and I'm not feeling it at all... 🤔 Opinions? Does it pick up from here?

SaturnDoo 🤢Uggghhh. I feel the same way about it. I wish I had of DNFed it at 100 pages but I didn't.I kept going due to all the rave reviews. 🤔I have about 40 pages left so I'll probably skim my way through those 😐🙄 3mo
Martta @SaturnDoo Thanks so much for the tip! I feel like this book would need some serious editing before I could really get into it. The subject is interesting but the story just doesn't work for me. It's a pity. I've too heard a lot of good about it so I hoped it would be as good as they promised. ☹ 3mo
SaturnDoo @Martta my sentiments exactly. 🙄I just couldn't relate to the characters and I'm not into the story either. Just not meant for me. 3mo
rjsthumbelina @Martta I agree that it needed some editing. I finished it, but probably only bc I listened to the audiobook instead of physically reading 3mo
Martta @SaturnDoo Exactly! @rjsthumbelina Maybe it would be easier to get through as an audio book. Especially if it had a really good reader. 🤔 3mo

This book is perfect if you're looking for mindless entertainment and to be transported somewhere unlike anything most of us are used to. There are enough dramatic, over-the-top characters, subplots, and scandals to keep you engaged the entire book. I felt like I was eavesdropping the entire ride, so it was pretty fun. Don't expect any depth or anything life-changing. It's a good, fun escape if you tend to read more serious novels.

Meh 🤷‍♀️

Pros: This book got me out of a reading slump
Cons: I wasn‘t invested in any of the characters. Rachel was the most tolerable. I couldn‘t stand all of the name dropping (designers, people, places, etc.). I can‘t imagine living a life where other people‘s opinions were all that mattered to me.

This was not the book for me. I only finished it because I kind of wanted to know what happened to Astrid. I won‘t be continuing the series.

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Same here. I just found the whole book kinda . . . dumb. I know a lot of people liked it, but it just wasn‘t for me. 3mo
Alfrazier21 I honestly don‘t know why I bothered finishing it. I didn‘t find it funny at all...just superficial and pretentious. But to each their own! @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled 3mo

I realized when I saw it on my profile that I was still 'currently reading' this book that I didn't post my review. I read it for virtual foodie book club in Feb/March & enjoyed it although I do like the movie better as I found the book draggy in the middle. Still, it was funny, vividly described & made me miss my work trips to Singapore & all the delicious food. My pairing for book club was a bit lame: Chinese Egg Drop Soup, but it was good...

It's time for the next discussion question!

Discussion question 2: What does Rachel‘s view of Asian men reveal about the complications of growing up Asian in America (p. 90)? How does Kwan use humor to make a serious point here and in other parts of the novel?

#crazyrichasiansbuddyread

Cheshirecat913 The whole thing seems so foreign to me in general because finding the right match that my family approved of was never a thing for me. It sounds exhausting the way it was presented in the book. 4mo
AnneCecilie I‘ve returned the book to the library so I can‘t go back and check the page, but throughout the book I feel that Rachel having grown up in the USA doesn‘t understand things in the same way as her mother and best friend when it comes the Nick. Family and who they are seems to matter a lot more in Singapore than the USA. 4mo

Rachel and Nick is going to Singapore for the summer when Nick‘s best friend is getting married. At the same time Nick want to introduce Rachel to his family. There‘s just one problem: Nick‘s family is filthy rich and it‘s old money. Will his family and friends accept Rachel?

I had some trouble getting into this story and there‘s so many characters to remember. By p70 I didn‘t care about any of them. This might have something to do with how ⬇️
