Crazy Rich Asians
Crazy Rich Asians | Kevin Kwan
Crazy Rich Asians is the outrageously funny debut novel about three super-rich, pedigreed Chinese families and the gossip, backbiting, and scheming that occurs when the heir to one of the most massive fortunes in Asia brings home his ABC (American-born Chinese) girlfriend to the wedding of the season. When Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, she envisions a humble family home, long drives to explore the island, and quality time with the man she might one day marry. What she doesn't know is that Nick's family home happens to look like a palace, that she'll ride in more private planes than cars, and that with one of Asia's most eligible bachelors on her arm, Rachel might as well have a target on her back. Initiated into a world of dynastic splendor beyond imagination, Rachel meets Astrid, the It Girl of Singapore society; Eddie, whose family practically lives in the pages of the Hong Kong socialite magazines; and Eleanor, Nick's formidable mother, a woman who has very strong feelings about who her son should--and should not--marry. Uproarious, addictive, and filled with jaw-dropping opulence, Crazy Rich Asians is an insider's look at the Asian JetSet; a perfect depiction of the clash between old money and new money; between Overseas Chinese and Mainland Chinese; and a fabulous novel about what it means to be young, in love, and gloriously, crazily rich.

If you like romance/heterodrama, rumor mills, and ogling at celebrity wealth, you‘d like this book. My major criticism is I wish the characters‘ personalities were described with the same richness (ha!) as the food and clothes. I had a hard time believing their actions beyond “the plot says so.” This book is totally opposite of what I like to read, but not poorly written. For me it‘s a pan, but I‘d be curious to hear from folks who liked it :)

My #bookspin was over-the-top 😳 I think I‘m supposed to find all this conspicuous consumption funny or maybe even enticing. I‘m just kind of… horrified. Also, I would have left Nick Young in a hot minute for blindsiding me like he did Rachel. And he‘d be lucky if I didn‘t stomp his nuts on the way out. DUDE 😡 ⭐️⭐️1/2

I had no idea this one was as long as it is! I did have a little trouble keeping track of all the characters, but it was entertaining, and the ending was pretty compelling!

Now, do I see if the movie is streaming or just go straight on to book 2? 🤔

We are obsessed with rich people. Like, in general. As the 1% gets richer, the fascination grows. We‘re reading this, watching succession, buying their mags. And they all seem horrible. I mean, you have to be a little horrible if you‘re that rich.
At least in this story, some of them are nice, polite, and generally likeable - altho I still wouldn‘t call them good 🤷🏽‍♀️

I liked reading this, lots of family drama, and lots of food descriptions.

11-14 Nov 2021 (audiobook)
A fun, easy listen which the film followed very closely right up until the last reveal.
Rachel accompanies Nick to his best friend‘s wedding in Singapore where she discovers he is the crazy rich heir to one of Singapore‘s oldest, most secretive and most unwelcoming families. I concurred with Michael - at times the extreme wealth was obscene and the behaviour of its holders deplorable. But it was still fun.

This was between “pick” an “so-so” to me, I‘m giving it the benefit of the “pick” because it is very much out of genre. Here‘s the prob: women do not think or talk like this. the background characters are much more likable than the main couple. Nick is a doofus, he doesn‘t explain to Rachel (gf) that he‘s an heir to one of the richest families in Asia, ok fine. Not great, but it‘s the set up…

5feet.of.fury But then to not warn her about the customs, the exes, the dress code… c‘mahhn no one is that clueless. 10mo
Karisa I liked the book so much better after seeing the movie. 😂 When I first read the book, the descriptions of rich people stuff bogged me down and I agree— side characters were much more likeable than mcs. 👍 10mo
5feet.of.fury @Karisa when I saw Jimmy O Yang played Bernard I was psyched, loved him on Silicon Valley. Peik Lin & family is well casted too, and they rang more true than many of the others in the book to me. I will def watch the movie! The descriptions of all the houses and designers, etc was a lot the whole time I was like “can we just describe the food this much?” 10mo
Tera66 I listened to all three, and loved them on audio. Not sure I would have enjoyed them on paper as much. 10mo

No need to tell you what it‘s about as I‘m the last person to read it but I loved to get a glimpse of the crazy rich way of life in #Singapore and I rooted so hard for Nick and Rachel! My next book. This is one of those books where I saw the movie before reading the book (I actually saw the movie twice; I fell asleep during the first viewing, but in my defence, it was nap time for my friend's children and I fell prey to that 😝). I enjoy reading books with a movie adaptation because I like to compare the two in my mind. #booksevenof2021

Rachel goes on a Singapore trip with her boyfriend, Nicholas, for a wedding. She meets his family, one of Southeast Asia‘s wealthiest families while dealing with their judgements and disapproval. If you like books that have Asian representation, you will like this. The point of view is in third person omniscient, established by showing different character‘s attitudes, personalities, and beliefs; every chapter shows a different character.

I can check another book off my TBR! I‘ve been wanting to read this book for years and now that I have, I don‘t feel a need to read the rest of the trilogy. The characters were so over the top and unlikeable that I didn‘t connect to them. As a satire it was good, but I didn‘t need to be in that world any longer. I bet the movie would be fun, though, because of all that opulence!

KathyWheeler I had liked this and the other two when I read them, but I was unable to take his latest because I was so grossed out by the way the characters wasted their obscene wealth. The difference is I read the Crazy Rich Asians series before COVID and the latest craziness and selfishness. I read the latest one after, so I was disgusted by rather than amused by the characters. Finished my third book for #20in4 just now! This was a fun one about uber rich people behaving badly. It's funny, outrageous, and over the top in the best way. It took a second to get used to the rampant head-hopping, but it was written in such a way that it never bothered me. I enjoyed learning about Singapore. I don't think I've ever read a book that takes place there before. It made me want to visit just to try the food!

Ok, the first few chapters left me reeling and confused. There were so many characters and I never did really figure out who was who in many cases, or how they were related. Though – for most – I did figure out who the nicer friends/family were and who the horrible snobs were. Once we were introduced to Nick and Rachel, though, it got better. And some of their nicer friends I liked. In the end, I liked it, and I will continue the trilogy.
