Never Let Me Go
Never Let Me Go | Kazuo Ishiguro
From the Booker Prize-winning author of The Remains of the Day and When We Were Orphans, comes an unforgettable edge-of-your-seat mystery that is at once heartbreakingly tender and morally courageous about what it means to be human.Hailsham seems like a pleasant English boarding school, far from the influences of the city. Its students are well tended and supported, trained in art and literature, and become just the sort of people the world wants them to be. But, curiously, they are taught nothing of the outside world and are allowed little contact with it.Within the grounds of Hailsham, Kathy grows from schoolgirl to young woman, but its only when she and her friends Ruth and Tommy leave the safe grounds of the school (as they always knew they would) that they realize the full truth of what Hailsham is.Never Let Me Go breaks through the boundaries of the literary novel. It is a gripping mystery, a beautiful love story, and also a scathing critique of human arrogance and a moral examination of how we treat the vulnerable and different in our society. In exploring the themes of memory and the impact of the past, Ishiguro takes on the idea of a possible future to create his most moving and powerful book to date.

It‘s easy to see, in terms of tone and style, that this is the same author who wrote Klara And The Sun. They‘re like two halves of the same whole. If you liked one, you‘ll enjoy the other. I can‘t speak to the 2010 film adaptation – I haven‘t seen it yet – but this is an intense, smart, compelling read with a lot to say about the reality we live in. Full review: https://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/never-let-me-go-kazuo-ishiguro/

BC_Dittemore I watched the film adaptation after finishing the book. Superb. One of the rare instances where a movie is nearly as good as the source material. 2w
Kimberlone The movie is ver good! The three main actors are perfect and the tragedy is so well depicted 😭 2w
Bigwig If only the horrifying fate suggested in this novel were limited to fiction. It should be required reading for anyone following the status of Uyghurs in China. 2w

I have yet to be disappointed by Ishiguro; his novels are masterful. In Never Let Me Go, he builds this alternate world, yet grounds it so solidly in our own as if he has seen something that we always tend to overlook. And I suppose that‘s the point: the idea that we will turn our heads when we are faced with something that disturbs us. Yet, here, we are forced to look, and to think, and Ishiguro dares us to turn away, knowing we can‘t this time.

Incredible writing that envisioned a world not so different from our own, this book took my breathe away with it‘s terrible beauty. I went in without knowing the storyline and was soul-shocked by the end. I look forward to reading another of this authors books, Klara and the Sun, next.

this is worth the hype. Slow build, and not terribly original plot but it is exquisitely executed, and you‘ll grow attached to the characters even tho yeah, flaws. I went into it without knowing anything abt the premise and it paid off :))

Not for me. This narration was a bit dry and the story uninteresting. The big bombshells were slightly inserted and not really discussed in a manner appropriate for the topic. It's slow going, and I kept waiting for something to happen. It seems Ishiguro is a good author, it's just the story didn't do it for me at all. There was so much more that could have happened with this odd topic but it was just accepted as normal behavior.

Usually, whenever I finish a book, I take a moment, a moment that lasts atleast a few hours, or in some cases, a few days to gather my thoughts and then I proceed to write them down. But, for the first time, I have the urge to write about a book immediately after flipping its last page. A book that evoked a reaction so viscerally emotional that one has to be ready with a bottle to catch the lightning....(continued in comments)

nathandrake1997 ....Narrated from the first person perspective of Kathy, a thirty one year old carer (a carer is a person who cares for organ donors), we follow her train of thought, primarily pertaining to her memories about school, a dystopian establishment named Hailsham where clones are groomed and trained to become potential organ donors. They donate organs until their bodies can't cope and they eventually pass away.... 6mo
nathandrake1997 ....This state is referred to as "completion". These donors are cited to be the key reason for there being a potential cure for a lot of life-threatening diseases, but one wonders throughout the book, at what cost?.... 6mo
nathandrake1997 ....Ishiguro treads familiar ground when it comes to touching upon themes pertaining to the fragility of memory, the various existential conundrums about the human condition, but also traditional to Ishiguro is the lens he chooses to chronicle these human quandaries through, the lens not necessarily being human.... 6mo
See All 12 Comments
nathandrake1997 ....While in his later novel, the Booker longlisted KLARA AND THE SUN it was through the eyes of a robot, here it is through the eyes of a clone. Resembling human beings in shape and form, but unlike humans, instead being born with a predestined goal.... 6mo
nathandrake1997 ....Another significant Ishiguro trait being the intentional emotional distance in his prose, where he stubbornly refuses to give into mawkish sentimentality and instead fleshes out the characters and the world around them using sparse yet evocative prose while letting the eventual heartbreak subtly simmer in the background until it builds up to its eventual boiling point.... 6mo
nathandrake1997 ....and moistens one's eyes while the pages soak up the tears and leaves stains in its wake.... 6mo
nathandrake1997 ....Divided into three parts, the first part, through the unreliable memory of the protagonist Kathy, chronicles the lives of Kathy, Ruth and Tommy at Hailsham. The second part is about their lives in a place called The Cottages, which in a way is their first exposure to the outside world.... 6mo
nathandrake1997 ....The third, and in my opinion the most heartbreaking, part is set in the present where the ambiguous memories in the previous parts coalesce into an emotionally satisfying whole that leaves the reader reaching out for a tissue whilst turning the pages because inspite of the constant downpour of tears, the intrigue is such that one can't help but read on!... 6mo
nathandrake1997 ....While THE REMAINS OF THE DAY is still my favourite Ishiguro, NEVER LET ME GO comes a really close second! 6mo
BarbaraBB My two favorites as well! 6mo

I keep thinking about this river somewhere, with the water moving really fast. And these two people in the water, trying to hold onto each other, holding on as hard as they can, but in the end it‘s just too much. The current‘s too strong. They‘ve got to let go, drift apart. That‘s how I think it is with us. It‘s a shame, Kath, because we‘ve loved each other all our lives. But in the end, we can‘t stay together forever

quote
Sharv_Sona
Never Let Me Go | Kazuo Ishiguro

And so we stood together like that, at the top of that field, for what seemed like ages, not saying anything, just holding each other, while the wind kept blowing and blowing at us, tugging our clothes, and for a moment, it seemed like we were holding onto each other because that was the only way to stop us being swept away into the night.

Very Ishiguro and so, so good. I love how the story unfolds and just kind of gets under the skin. This is a poignant look at the way that we decide on a social order and then do whatever it takes to justify that order, including dehumanizing people as necessary.

This was a story with a uniquely eerie atmosphere — there are people who are being bred to later donate their vital organs, but the story is not so much about that, it focuses more on the characters and their bringing up at this boarding school, how they drift apart and then find each other again later on, and how they cope with the fact that they're going to have to donate their organs sooner or later.

This book explores the idea of what it means to be human. It‘s not quite a dystopian, but it has similar elements in that it portrays a world where there are injustices to people like the protagonists. But the workings of this world are vague enough that we know to focus on the characters.
I didn‘t love this book, but it was enjoyable enough. The writing style, where something was pointed out first & then explained in parts was not my favorite.

I read Never Let Me Go as slowly as I can to savor Ishiguro‘s craftsmanship in writing. I particularly love Ishiguro‘s style of narration, which is full of foreboding and dread that only the readers feel and the characters are fully unaware.

Never Let Me Go is Kath‘s art masterpiece. It presents her humanity as equally as ours. And it carefully, painfully, and heartbreakingly put into perspective the moral complexity associated with cloning.

It deeply explores the question of what makes us human, how far we should go to preserve human life, and it is one of the best and most in-depth character studies I‘ve ever read. I think the reader benefits from going into this novel with no idea of what the story is about. Slowly the details of the story unravel and after finishing I feel like Ishiguro has given us plenty to think about. It‘s a slow reveal and very straightforward but there is plenty to ruminate on and I look forward to discussing this one with the book club.
