Never Let Me Go
Never Let Me Go | Kazuo Ishiguro
From the Booker Prize-winning author of The Remains of the Day and When We Were Orphans, comes an unforgettable edge-of-your-seat mystery that is at once heartbreakingly tender and morally courageous about what it means to be human.Hailsham seems like a pleasant English boarding school, far from the influences of the city. Its students are well tended and supported, trained in art and literature, and become just the sort of people the world wants them to be. But, curiously, they are taught nothing of the outside world and are allowed little contact with it.Within the grounds of Hailsham, Kathy grows from schoolgirl to young woman, but its only when she and her friends Ruth and Tommy leave the safe grounds of the school (as they always knew they would) that they realize the full truth of what Hailsham is.Never Let Me Go breaks through the boundaries of the literary novel. It is a gripping mystery, a beautiful love story, and also a scathing critique of human arrogance and a moral examination of how we treat the vulnerable and different in our society. In exploring the themes of memory and the impact of the past, Ishiguro takes on the idea of a possible future to create his most moving and powerful book to date.

I'm brutal about my reviews. This wasn't bad exactly; it just never got going. I expected something more to happen. I love sci-fi and speculative fiction because so often you get introduced to a world different from ours that ultimately reveals something fundamental about what it means to be human. For me this just remained a flat description of that horrible alternate reality. Ishiguro should stick to historical fiction in my opinion.

I‘ll be torn about my feelings about this book for awhile. As a piece of literature, I thought the characters were wonderful and their story was so sad. I couldn‘t stop thinking about how nonsensical the idea of donors were though. I wish we would have gotten just a little bit of backstory about why donors existed or were needed. I wish the story didn‘t even have this outer layer of a sci-fi story. I would have enjoyed it a lot more then.

This is a book that I feel will stay with me awhile as I process it. Ishiguro is a masterful writer. Although many of the interactions between the characters were told in such a straight forward manner, they were so fraught with underlying tension that it was almost palpable at times. The perils of advancing technology is one of many themes that really leave you with food for thought. I will definitely seek out more of his works.

A pick from a book club I'm in.
I really struggled through this. I just didn't care about any of the characters, and the time spent reading teenaged banalities ... I mean, I get it, and once you realise the context , the banalities become absurd.

This review helped me with perspective, https://electricliterature.com/kazuo-ishiguros-never-let-me-go-is-a-masterpiece-...

But still. A tough read.

Haunting, tragic, and riveting.

Going into this, I already knew the purpose of the students but the author drops enough hints to make it obvious early on. I was expecting a big twist at the end or a happier ending.

My one question is: why didn‘t the students, when they became adults, try to escape their fates? They all seemed to just accept it even though it seems there would be some “normal” people who be sympathetic and help them.

This was such a unique and beautifully written story. It was a little slow at first, but I think that was a perfect setup because I could relate so well to being an adult and remembering back to my school days and how we reacted to things largely based on peer pressure and how pointless that seems from an adult perspective. Kids are the same everywhere, right? But then you learn the purpose of this school... overall a thought provoking read.

I‘ve read mixed reviews on Never Let Me Go but in my opinion - very well written and unlike most other books!

Kathy, our main character, is growing up, and about to be moving on from her boarding school. A very prestigious school which oddly keeps its students extremely safe and healthy with little experiences outside of the school.

I 100% knew what was coming early on in this novel but still could NOT put it down.

Truly heartbreaking.

KristenDuck Of course. It‘s such an interesting concept and it was portrayed in just a beautiful way to be honest. So upsetting though if it‘s given too much thought. 9mo

I appreciated the bits of new information about what the place was REALLY about as the book went on. Made it feel like a sci-fi mystery. But all of the stream-of-consciousness, memory-relating didn‘t seem worth it by the end. Like the mysteries that were revealed weren‘t worth all of the details. Even so, it made me think! And it made me sad. Curious to see the movie now!

After putting off finishing the last few chapters i finally braced myself with a glass of bubbly and a hot bath for the last couple of pages. This super realistic dystopia is so well written, the innocence of it reeled me in -until i suddenly had to put the book aside cause the underlying cruelty peaked through its girly coming-of-age surface and punched me in the gut. A well observed study of what ultimately makes humans humane. Genius.

About students at an elite boarding school where children are raised to be both healthy and artistic and taught to believe that these things would be essential to the world they would one day enter. Which they are, but not in the way it would appear at the start. This book came highly recommended by several friends. I found it to be both brilliantly written and excruciatingly boring at the same time. I didn't even know that was possible to do. 😖
