Bailedbailed

I can't continue with this one the writing is driving me nuts. Who even calls a travel mug a go cup.

Bailedbailed

Well, I previously mentioned I was struggling with the author's overblown language, which was a distraction from the genuinely interesting stories, and I thought I'd look at reviews to see what others had made of the book to see if it's worth me continuing. The reviews for *this* book are ok, but I saw reviews for another commenting on the author's transphobic, terfy views, and that was the clincher for me to bail.
⬇️

Bookwomble My main reason for bailing is stylistic, a matter of literary taste, and others may find Blackie hitting a right note for them, and I must emphasise that (up to page 92) she has not promoted transphobic views in this book, so it's probably 'safe' to read in that regard, but personally, and with some disappointment, I'm out. 4d
Cuilin Ugh!! So disappointing!! I read a book by her that I really enjoyed. I guess no further reads by her for me. 4d
Bookwomble @Cuilin Yeah, disappointment was my main feeling , too 🫤 The reviews for the other terfy book mainly said how much they were enjoying it, then unexpectedly a chapter of transphobic ranting, with a lot of consequent DNFing. 4d
Bookwomble @dabbe Right 🫵😉 4d

Bailedbailed

As soon as I started this I remembered why I have zero memory of A Visit From The Goon Squad--I had no idea what the hell I had read. After 70 pages of an incoherent jumble of story elements I decided to #HailTheBail

My second DNF of the month and it's only the 3rd 😆 But that also means two more TBRs off the shelf so Yay!

melissajayne I almost bailed on this one 5d

TheBookgeekFrau @melissajayne It was hard to follow--the narrators changed, the time frame flip-flopped, and my attention just kept wondering. Not a relaxing weekend read lol 5d
TheBookgeekFrau @dabbe You know it, sista!! 5d
dabbe @TheBookgeekFrau 😂💜😂 5d
melissajayne @TheBookgeekFrau that‘s how I exactly felt about the book as well; library book club members had those same thoughts as well. 5d
TheBookgeekFrau @melissajayne Glad I cut my losses when I did! 5d

I picked this one up on a whim and made it to 28% before bailing. It feels either outdated (published 25 years ago) or cartoonishly oversimplified (or both?). It has some potentially helpful insights, but I can't get past the style of the writing. In the author's defense, I think the audiobook version I had was abridged, so maybe the original is better.

Photo: Camille is definitely not a people pleaser.

Jas16 I love Camille already. 1w
Kerrbearlib Camille is adorable! Have you read Fawning by Ingrid Clayton? It was just published a few weeks ago and I‘m about 1/2 way through it now. I really like how she explains that people pleasing can be a trauma response. 1w

JenReadsAlot Omg great picture!! 1w
ImperfectCJ @Kerrbearlib I have it on hold on Libby, but it's so new it's going to take a while. I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it. 1w
dabbe #hailthebail! 🙌🏻 #betterbooksahead

And OMG, Camille! What a sassy lassie! #photocontestwinner 🖤🐾🤍

Gissy The book was bad but that bad feeling was substituted by that pretty fur face😻 1w
ImperfectCJ @Gissy Camille proves that we don't have to set aside our own needs to bring joy to the people around us. :-) 1w

I‘m predicting more success for myself with this prompt as I DNF‘d a few this year!!🤦‍♀️ I plan on starting with the Berlin Letters recommended by @kspenmoll I also have two Graham Greene novels to try. What are you reading?

Bookwormjillk I was just looking at 1w

Cuilin @Bookwormjillk same, it looks good. I haven‘t read anything by her yet. Have you? I have a hold on mystery by her at my LPL 1w
Bookwormjillk @Cuilin I thought I had, but I checked and I don't have anything written down. 1w
Cuilin @Bookwormjillk I was convinced I had too. 🤔 1w
dabbe I also had quite a few DNF's this year--not just for this but a lot of others. I think I over-FOMO'd myself! 🤣 1w
Cuilin @dabbe Yep!! I‘m in my #HailTheBail era. 1w
dabbe @Cuilin 🎯🤣🎯 1w
julieclair I haven‘t had many DNFs this year, but I‘ve had a LOT of “didn‘t get to it in the assigned month and therefore will never read it because now I have to start the new month‘s books or I‘ll be behind” books. (Would love to figure out a hashtag for that, lol!) Like @dabbe , I over-FOMO‘d myself. I‘m really going to try to cut down on my challenges for 2026. (But everything sounds like so much fun!) But #BookedInTime is a keeper for sure. 1w
julieclair I absolutely love this challenge! Now… as to the original question 😂… I‘ll be reading 1w
Cuilin @julieclair oh my gosh yes to the “didn‘t read it during the assigned month so now I‘m not gonna read it” I‘m blaming my ADHD!!! 😆 American Spy sounds great. Let me know if there‘s an historical era you‘d like to see next year. I have a few ideas for some new ones but don‘t mind repeating a past prompt. 1w
Karisimo I love this time period! I've read 4 of the ones you listed! I would also recommend The Briar Club by Kate Quinn! 1w
dabbe @julieclair Yep, I have to seriously regroup. My books are collecting dust on the shelves as I keep buying more books to keep up with the group reads. Time to slow down and reassess. 🧡🤎💜 1w
Cuilin @Karisimo oh thanks for the recommendation!! Which four did you read and did you like them? 1w
Karisimo @cuilin I have read The Berlin Letters, Our Woman in Moscow, Transcription, and I Must Betray You. I liked and would recommend them all! If I *had* to pick a favorite, I would go with I Must Betray You. 1w
Cuilin @Karisimo Thanks for replying. I have Berlin Letters but with my track record I might need a back up. 🤭 1w
Jess861 Just picked up Our Woman in Moscow from the library - hoping I find time to read it! 5d
Cuilin @Jess861 May the odds be ever in your favor. 5d

Bailedbailed

My #DoubleSpin for June. I looked through my shelves multiple times, thinking I had the paperback, only to discover that, no silly me, I have the ebook! Despite the darker subject (the MC is dying of cancer & reflecting on his life) while I'm going through some very stressful stuff, I decided to start reading it. I really tried, but OH did I really dislike this guy & how he treated people, particularly women (especially his wife). #HailTheBail
