New Year's Resolutions
New Year's Resolutions | New York Times
91 posts | 1 to read
This e-single compiles compelling stories about New Year s Resolutions from the New York Times archives. Every January 1, people around the world resolve to make their lives anew, but how many follow through with their goals? Pascal Bruckner writes that resolutions only nourish the illusion that changing our lifestyles will change our lives, but John Tierney believes that, with great focus and determination, we can stay on track to fulfilling our resolutions.

I have been going back and forth about my resolutions, but now, a week into the New Year, I finally think I have settled on something.

So, in 2019 I will...
- try to finish the books from my #RecommendationsChallenge2018
- do #Booked2019
- use the library and audiobooks more, especially for nonfiction
- read as much as possible and don‘t stress about it

Tamra Yay for the last resolution! 👍🏾👍🏾 10mo

This is one of my #bookishresolutions...I need less screen time so I can have more reading time. 😀

Melissa_J I really need to do this myself! I can‘t believe how much time I spend on my phone! 10mo
melissanorr Yes! One of my resolutions is to spend less time on my phone. It's hard to believe how much time I waste scrolling through so many different sites and apps. 10mo

LeahBergen Me, too!! (as I type away at a screen 😆🤣) 10mo
Annl Me too! 10mo
LauraBeth @melissa_j, @melissanorr @rubyslippereads, @leahbergen, @annl This really worked well for me today! In addition to the 30 min limit for social media and games - I set aside big blocks of time on my phone for complete “downtime” - I got a LOT of reading done! 😀 I think I have like 2 minutes left to look at Litsy for the rest of the day before I get locked out until midnight 😹 (edited) 10mo
DivineDiana I did not know about this option! 😲 Think I‘ll try it! 10mo
DivineDiana Do you have an IPhone? I couldn‘t find this option? 10mo
LauraBeth @DivineDiana I do - it‘s found under Settings>Screen Time on the iPhone. I just went in and set my “downtime” for the day 😀 10mo
DivineDiana Thanks so much! 😀 Still not finding. 🤷🏼‍♀️Maybe not available on 7? Will research! 10mo
LauraBeth @DivineDiana I have a 7 so it could be something as simple as updating your OS. I‘m running 12.1.2. The screen time feature was on a recent update. 10mo
DivineDiana Great tip! Now I just have to free up some space! 😉👍🏻📲 10mo

1. I‘d like to read 100 books. I did it this year, I can do it again!
2. To read more books outside my comfort zone. I‘ve discovered a few unexpected great books that way.
3. Try to connect with more Littens outside the Litsy universe.

📚Read 100 books, I read 90 this year.
📚Read more of what I already own, at least 50.
📚Post more reviews.
📚Read at least 10 books from my new book: The Great American Read Book of Books.
📚Participate in at least 5 buddy reads including botm buddy reads.

1- Complete the PopSugar Challenge, the Modern Mrs Darcy Challenge, Nonfiction 2019 challenge, and a British Authors Challenge
2- Read 75 books
3- Avoid buying books in order to read the books I've already bought. This is a serious issue for me, but I'm not going to say I won't buy any books at all. That's just unrealistic!

1. Keep an eye on my overall page count rather than my overall book total so I don't keep reaching past the chunkster books that are sitting in my pile.

2. Use the library more often.

3. Attend literary events when and where I can.

4. Thoroughly enjoy my reading life.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa #1 is a must for me too! 10mo

Amiable @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I get mad at myself this time every year when I realize that I got too caught up in the race to the book total and kept grabbing small books! 10mo

I am looking forward to the New Years “reset,” and getting into some better habits. I have identified one true resolution and it is......

No buying books in 2019.

I know, right?! I don‘t think it will be as difficult as I thought at first. I have 100s (if not 1,000) of unread books as well as access to digital ARCs & the library! I think the toughest thing will be if one of my fave authors publishes a book & I want to get a hardcover edition.

Zelma Good luck! 👏👍 and there are always birthday gifts, right? 😉 10mo
Ruthiella It will be tough! I try to offset my buying with a one in two out(ie read from my shelf) rule. It works...sometimes 🤪 10mo
bookaholic1 I know how you feel I keep telling myself that I have 469 books to read. But I can't help myself. I don't smoke or drink so books are my addiction 10mo

#ReadingResolutions #bookresolutions 📚My 2018 Bookish Resolutions. The biggie based on this year's performance, is keeping up on rating/reviewing books on Goodreads. I'm going to try to work in more buddy reads-which work for me, rather than challenges (besides Goodreads) which I suck at.😬(Details on the Feb Persuasion Buddy Read will be coming soon.) I am going to continue to reduce book buying & reading more diverse books goals from 2017.👍📚

Ruri_kaichou All your resolutions are great! Especially the last one. That's why I'm not really doing any challenges this year either 2y
Cortg Fantastic reading resolutions! 2y
Daisey Great list! I‘m also planning on more buddy reads this year which was a main reason for not doing list challenges. Many of my favorites last year were books I read along with others here. 2y
melbeautyandbooks Great list. I need to do more reviews this year, too! 2y

I'm going to attempt this, despite usually falling flat with prompts & challenges. My book resolutions are to try & read ~50 books this year. Including children's books. I was able to fly past that number quickly and easily last year since I did not work while I was pregnant (due to HG), or right after she was born. This year will be a little more tricky. I will be adding more audiobooks into my rotation as a way to meet goals as well.

This year my #readingresolutions are so much less specific. While I have other goals like hosting the #poetrychallenge2018 & working on that #MountTBRchallenge & #yearofthechunkster, my main goals are both to read what I feel like when I feel like it AND to continue stretching myself. I'm looking at my TBR and putting books into seasons and thematic categories, deciding what books to read together to enhance the mood or further the discussion.

gossamerchild I love the idea of reading more by mood. Great resolutions! 2y
Natasha.C.Barnes @gossamerchild Thanks! I just got a little too caught up in challenges in 2017 (my adhd can make me a little obsessive) and I never got to most of the books I was dying to read! So I'm working on more balance in 2018. 2y
See All 9 Comments
gossamerchild @Natasha.C.Barnes yeah, I found myself getting too competitive with myself 😉. It's good to be more flexible. 2y
cocomass These are fantastic reading plans 🙌🏽 2y
Crinoline_Laphroaig I like to read seasonally. Some books were just meant for winter and others for summer. 2y

This year I'm not committing to any specific challenges. Instead I'm going to focus on books from the #1001books list, participate in readalongs or buddy reads as they catch my attention, and try to read books already on my shelves. Additionally, I'm looking forward to another great year of books chosen by our #CovertoCover #LitsyGoesPostal group.

A couple Reading Resolutions
1) Finish "The Weird." I didn't make it super far in this behemoth, but I want to tackle it in 2018
2) Try and keep pace with my Nocturnal Reader's boxes as they come in. It's a feat I only managed rhe first month so, you know, easy.
3) Whittle away at the tbr, as always. I got back into preordering books last year, but I've slowed down more on outright purchases (except pulp horror at used book stores).

khooliha 4) Write something, write anything. It's not reading, but whatever. 2y
khooliha Oh and 5) Keep pace with the Star Trek Discovery novels (even though I have failed to start them...) 2y

TheDoubleLetterThief What do you mean by No Stats? 2y
Cinfhen I‘ll be keeping a reading log for myself and I‘ll post books I‘ve read on Litsy & GoodReads but I won‘t be “keeping score” each month... @TheDoubleLetterThief I‘m going to focus on just reading and working on my challenges.... 2y
MyBookLife Great resolutions, I tell myself those things every day 😂😂 2y
Melissa_J These are great resolutions. I‘m right there with you on numbers 1, 5 and 6 👍🏻 Oh, and other than counting the number of books I read per year, I‘m a no stats person too 😉 (edited) 2y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I need 3,5,and 6 myself! 2y
Izai.Amorim I‘m a no-stats person too. 2y

Ubookquitous Why no stats? 2y
Dragon Happy New Year @Cinfhen ! I‘m with you on the buy less resolution. I often buy a new book without reading my own neglected books. Wishing you hours of reading enjoyment for 2018 🎉 2y

Cinfhen I decided not to focus on how many books I read a month @Ubookquitous just to read more consciously.....quality over quantity 🤓 2y
Kalalalatja I‘m with you on 1, 5 and 6 😂 2y
RealLifeReading Definitely gonna try to read more of my own books and try to write more reviews, even if it's just a couple of sentences! 2y
TrishB I‘m going with 1,3 and 6 - going to try hard anyway!! I‘ve kept stats since I was a kid so that would be a step too far. I don‘t do GR and I know a ban would make me buy more! But the hype one - I‘ve been so disappointed by some.... 2y
Cinfhen Not having access to the library is a MAJOR part of my problem @TrishB I feel the NEED to now purchase EVERY book that gets mentioned on Litsy 2y
TrishB That‘s where the hype always gets me - have to buy and read! I get that one totally. 2y
britt_brooke Fantastic goals!! I really need to heed by #1. 2y

I didn't do too bad on my reading resolutions for this year. 4 out of 5 is pretty good and I also completed Litsy A to Z, which isn't on here. So more like 5 out of 6! No big resolutions for this year. I'll keep up with the one nonfiction a month and daily Bible reading. I really loved keeping a journal this year, so def sticking with that too. #resolutions

I have a bunch:

🔸Read 200 books
🔸Limit new book purchases
🔸Finish at least 5 of my challenges
🔸Read at least 25 more #1001books

I‘m planning ahead by filling my challenge prompts with books I already have and books that are available through the library and/or Playster. I‘ve cancelled my BOTM (😮) and will be canceling my Audible as soon as I use up my last credits.

Cinfhen I can‘t bring myself to cancel #BOTM 2y
JaimeDawn My resolution is pretty simple. I can only get a new book if I've read 5 of the ones I already own. 2y
melissajayne My resolution is to get rid of books that are just sitting on my shelf that I haven‘t cracked and read the ones I have before getting more. 2y
See All 11 Comments
sprainedbrain @JaimeDawn That‘s brilliant! 2y
sprainedbrain @melissajayne I did that a few weeks ago... I donated a whole box of books that have been sitting on my shelves for years. Finally just had to ask myself if I was ever going to read them, and for that box, the answer was no. 😳 2y
AmyG Complete the Booked 2018 challenge. 2y
bio_chem06 I'm finishing the last library stack I have and I'm reading the books from my bookshelf this year. So many great books and I keep ignoring them. 2y
jaimeisbionic I have mixed feelings about donating books because it's really comforting to me to be around books. And for so many years I was unable to keep more than perhaps 10 at a time. That said, books should be read! Not hoarded! So I'm going to try to read from what I already own first and foremost, then give away books that I don't love or feel a strong connection with. 2y
jaimeisbionic Also, your reading challenges and goals are inspiring. 👌🏼 2y
sprainedbrain @jaimeisbionic I know what you mean... it‘s hard for me to let them go, but I‘ve decided that if it‘s not a favorite (those go on my forever shelf) or I don‘t think I will ever read it again, I need to pass it on. 2y
Susanita The last time I reorganized my books, I made a dedicated read-then-donate shelf. Some of them I might just donate. OTOH if I decide to keep some, that‘s okay too! 2y

I'm a big one for resolutions, the making of them not so much the keeping of them. I love beginning projects or beginnings in general really. I have a number of #resolutions for 2018, mostly related to increasing my happiness and finding employment. But I've decided to have no book resolutions except maybe a minimum number of read books. I want to read whatever strikes a chord and feels right, not to fulfill a challenge.

Itchyfeetreader With you on this - last year I enjoyed looking at challenges as a way to widen my reading without the commitment and stress ! 2y
ephemeralwaltz Absolutely - I failed at my (first ever) reading challenges this year and I'm okay with that! I now know they're not my thing. 2y
TheDoubleLetterThief Or my thing either. I appreciate a list that makes me seem other things out, but why commit and give yourself another thing to ‘do‘? Plus then there are those who will feel like failures if they don‘t complete them. Should not be this way, not over Books! 2y

As we near the end of the year, I revisited the reading goals I posted in January 2017.
✅ over 100 total books
#LitsyAtoZ completed
#LitsyReadingChallenge completed
❌ gave up on Read Harder
❤️ Love my #CovertoCover #LitsyGoesPostal group and am looking forward to another year!
✅ read several books on #SerialReader
✅ read a few books in translation
✅ If Litsy blurbs & reviews count, I wrote more about my reading.

I call that success!

📚Finish Book Riot's #readharder challenge (I was three books short in 2016 😔)
📚Read at least 50% books by POC

I don't usually make resolutions, but this is something I can actually hold myself to. #bookishresolutions

Resolutions for 2017! The only thing I'm worried about is finishing Tritons Story, I've been writing it for a little over a year now and I keep "fixing" it so much that I can't get even close to finishing it. ????‍???

saresmoore Woohoo! Great goals! 3y
Claireluana The writer and the editor should never meet! Just finish that puppy and fix it later :) 3y
DragonAuthors You can do it!!! 3y

My 2017 reading goals. I'm hoping that participating in the challenges will motivate me to READ MORE this year!

My #bookishresolutions for 2017:

Read 150(+??) books
Read down the TBR (it is massive!!)
Complete the #birthdaychallenge in time for my 40th birthday at the end of August
Log all books I read on Goodreads (just getting started on GR -- #blameitonlitsy )
Read more comics/graphic novels
Readathons are so fun--I should do more! I already do @24in48 & @DeweysReadathon , gonna do more random ones as they pop up on Litsy timeline.

Suzze My main plan is to devour the stacks of books I already own. 3y

It's a year of books for me in 2017! The last one will probably be the toughest as i am typically a shy person but with all your ❤ and support, I'm happy to try. #bookishgoals #litsylove #goodreads #litsyatoz #bingo

This will be my 2nd year doing the @PlannerGirlBookClub Book Bingo! I need to do a better job this year of reading from my own shelves so I can declutter -- we'll be downsizing and moving again in a couple of years! #bookishresolutions #readinggoals #readjanuary

PlannerGirlBookClub So excited ! 3y

#ReadJanuary Fairly tame #BookishResolutions but I really need to get through some of the unread books on my Kindle. I've never (ever!) read a graphic novel and I want to at least try one, does anyone have a recommendation for a complete novice?

Kalalalatja I can recommend the tagged. It is short stories about sexual assaults and really important reading. Plus the art work is amazing. 3y
LectricSheep @Moray_Reads Have you seen Maus? It's amazing-- it was on at least 3 of my course syllabi when I was an undergrad, so it has "literary cred." It was my first "adult" graphic novel. 3y
Theresa Maus is amazing! Another one that blew me away was 3y

Theresa Or... (3-part series) 3y
Theresa I haven't read this but I've heard great things about it 3y
ReadosaurusText I echo the recommendations for Maus--it is an incredible series. I also really loved Abina and the Important Men. I think Persepolis is also very popular! Good luck! 3y
vivastory I second Maus & Persepolis. 3y

These are my #bookishresolutions for 2017! 🙌🏻 What are yours? #ReadJanuary

heatherkaz I like these resolutions! 3y
Peaceful_Reader I need to read more books from my own shelves also. Every year one or two make it down but it needs more movement or they get so damn dusty... 3y
Sue Nice! 3y

Litlady You're inspiring me! 😊📚 3y
Sarah83 Really nice ideas. 😍 3y
Emma3 Love these! 3y
ruskigurl16 I had written down to spend more time doing art, and combining that with books I have read is a wonderful idea!! 😍💙📚 3y
ReadosaurusText I'm with you on 3 and 5! I'm going to only read books I already own this year. As for blogging, my resolution is to blog more consistently, but not necessarily every read, so I admire your goal to blog every book! Good luck! 3y
Stickynotegirl The last idea sounds so cool! I've been wanting to get into oil painting but it's so intimidating to me 😩 3y
8little_paws #7 is a really cool idea!! 3y
elkeo_TheBookDragon We look forward to seeing more of your paintings! 3y
Read.Em.And.Eat I really can't wait to see the paintings! As someone who is not very artistic, I am absolutely in love with the works of those who are! 😍😍 3y
Bookzombie I love your resolutions and look forward to seeing your paintings! 3y
LitsyGoesPostal 😊👍🏻 3y
WordWaller I love the last one especially! Art based on books read sounds amazing! 3y
BookBabe @Litlady Thank you! 😊 Wonderful to hear that! ❤ 3y
BookBabe @Stickynotegirl Thank you! ❤ Oils are definitely intimidating. I avoided them for a long time, but I'm so glad I got into them! Now I would never go back. 🎨 I say go for it! Get some nitrile gloves, some inexpensive surfaces to paint on, but don't get cheap paint! You need the good stuff. I like Rembrandt best. 3y

Thank you all for giving me a place to share my love of reading and continually challenging me to expand and diversify my reading experience! I wasn't sure I wanted to take on this many challenges this year, but with everyone else's excitement I can't choose which to let go. Here's to a new year of wonderful books and great discussion!

#BookishResolutions #ReadJanuary

jpmcwisemorgan I really like these. I should probably write more about what I read too. The serial reads are so much fun and I like that we can be connected with all kinds of readers with them. 3y
Daisey @jpmcwisemorgan Thanks! I really enjoy the Serial Reader readalongs as well. It's such an easier way to give everyone access to the book and the timing for reading it. 3y
