Started this one. Many people around here seems so excited about it... I didn't know it was first published in 1962.

LeahBergen I hope you like it (and that you want to read along with some of the other #NYRBBookClub picks 😃). 6d
Cathythoughts Look forward to your thoughts! I‘m reading along with this gang for the next one too ( After Claude -their June Pick- ) I loved Cassandra ♥️👍🏻 (edited) 6d
Izai.Amorim @LeahBergen @Cathythoughts So far I'm enjoying it... Read along is a possibility, as long as it's no Rushdie 😆. (Strange, can‘t edit posts on my Android, only on iOS)... (edited) 6d

Suet624 Oh, I‘m so glad you‘re reading it. I hope you like it. 5d
Izai.Amorim @Suet624 It's a very intriguing book. Your perception of what is going on keeps changing as you read. The funny quotes don't feel so funny after a while. It seems to me that both sisters have a serious identity problem. 4d
Suet624 @Izai.Amorim sorry for the late response. As the mother of twins I have always wondered how twins kept from feeling the way Cassandra and her sister felt. There is such a delicate balance that must be maintained by twins. It‘s never ending. And as a mom it also was a delicate balance. 3d

After two long years I finally finished my manuscript!!! There's still a lot of work to do, the difficult part actually starts now (editing, rewriting, editing, rewriting...) But the story is finished, and that's a milestone worth celebrating. I'm buying everyone a virtual round of drinks! Cheers!

This was a quick and fun read. I wonder if it inspired the Cohen brothers to make Burn After Reading. Very similar plots.

TheKidUpstairs Love this book. My first Graham Greene, and it remains one of my favourites 1mo

I'm glad that I finally took the time for this book (Homage to Catalonia). Like Down and Out in Paris and London, it helps you to understand Orwell's work much better.
Picture: This dog sculpture is also inside the Lisbon cathedral. It watches while the lady reads (see previous post). The Portuguese have their priorities right!

batsy They certainly do! I love it. 1mo
Aimeesue Oooh, beautiful puppala! (That's pronounced pup-pah-LA, and for some reason I can't figure out, its what I've been calling my dogs lately. 😄) 1mo
Izai.Amorim @Aimeesue is puppala a dog race? 1mo

Aimeesue @Izai.Amorim Just a new nickname. Although, come to think of it, the dogs I call "puppala" are all smart and beautiful, so … oh, wait, that's all dogs. ? 1mo
Suet624 That fact about the dog with the reading woman is so cool! Thanks for posting this. 1mo
Izai.Amorim @Suet624 It was a pleasure. Only kind of dog allowed in a church.😂 1mo

I found the picture, it looks like the same you posted. This sarcophagus is inside the Lisbon cathedral, built 1147, destroyed by earthquakes many times. The lady kept reading, undisturbed.

TimSpalding My wife and I took many photos of that one, and I believe a similar one across the room. A pleasant vision of the afterlife. 1mo

I bought this book in Scotland last year and I could start it only now. A spy story, about one century old. My name is Bond, Vintage Bond...😂

When East Germany built the Berlin Wall, it left out a plot of land, a triangle about 350m2, on the West side. One day a Turkish guy moved in and planted a garden and built a tree house. West Germany couldn't stop him - theoretically abroad. East Germany either - outside the wall! It still exists!

Tanisha_A Oh wow! Kudos to that person 2mo

Third one. I really enjoyed this trilogy. Good plot. Maybe too many plot twists for my taste but I guess that's in the genre's DNA. Entertaining, from beginning to end.

After a very long reading slump I'm really enjoying this series. Number 2 was a mix of Eco's Foucault's Pendulum, Gaiman' American Gods, and Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. Very entertaining and with a lot of plot twists. On to number 3.

huntersmom1977 Glad to hear you are over your slump! I was there last summer and am so glad it has come to pass. Happy Reading Amigo! SEMPRE FRENTE! 😊 2mo

I'm not much into fantasy but I did enjoy this book. It had a more nuanced, one could even say darker approach to the topic. What happens to your personality when you master magical powers. Some depth for a change, though not always pleasant to read. (PS: I did write this blurb.)

Suet624 Another beautiful photo of a board. 😀 love it. 2mo
Izai.Amorim @Suet624 Thanks! I took it that same day. 2mo

Izai.Amorim @Sarah83 I was told there is no bug in the software, it's always me posting even if I'm sleeping. I must be a sleepwalker - or better said a sleep-poster. I could live with that. What really bothers me is to realize that my sleep-posting self had such a bad literary taste. I must go see a shrink about that. 😂 2mo
Suet624 How strange about your post. Posting the language of the angels. 2mo
Sarah83 That's really curious 🙄 2mo
Izai.Amorim @Suet624 @Sarah83 The first time it was a book called "Bait", I believe a romance, the second was "Beyond Humus and Falafel", a cookbook. I'm curious about the next one... I try to look at the bright side: if the software is doing this only to me, maybe I'm some kind of "chosen one" like Neo in the Matrix movie? ?? 2mo
Sarah83 If you post about Jane Austen, I will get more curious. 😂😂 2mo

sprainedbrain @Izai.Amorim I thought it was odd that you didn‘t have a lovely photo. That is weird! (edited) 2mo
Izai.Amorim @sprainedbrain Thanks! It's happened before, also around midnight. Seems like some kind of bug in the system. Last time I deleted it, making it difficult for the Litsy people to investigate. I hope they find out this time. 2mo
Dragon Thanks for the heads up @Izai.Amorim , I didn‘t realize there was a glitch like that. 😀🐉 2mo
JoScho Not cool! 2mo
TimSpalding We're working on this this morning. 2mo
TimSpalding @izai.amorim 1/ Okay, here's what we found. Previously we had only the database. This time we have all the logs still around too. So we can pinpoint the exact request that posted the exact quote, as well as the requests that posted your comments, refreshed your feed, etc. These all include the IP address, which can be resolved to a location, and the "user agent," which gives us device, OS, browser and version. 2mo
TimSpalding @izai.amorim 2/ Our conclusion is that quote and comments were posted by the same devices in the same region of the same country. This cuts out most problem scenarios and, we think, all errors. It leaves friends and family and butt-texting style mistakes. If you email tim@librarything.com we can discuss your devices, and send a detailed analysis with request times, IP addresses and so forth.
Izai.Amorim @TimSpalding Thanks. I'll email you tommorow. I think it's better to move this discussion offline. 2mo
Izai.Amorim @TimSpalding I sent you an email, maybe it was sorted out as spam? Could you please email me those log files at reviews@izaiamorim.com ? Thank you. 2mo
Izai.Amorim @TimSpalding I haven‘t heard anything from you, I hope you‘re well and nothing bad happened. It seems that this ticket is closed. I only reported the bug because I thought that it might interest you. I won‘t bother you in the future if it happens again. Take care. 2mo

A very strange thing happened to me last night. I saw that there was activity on my litsy account. I thought, I haven't posted in weeks. Maybe someone tagged me. Well, there was a post by me on a book I haven't read! The text was all giberish. The "machine" posted for me!!!! I deleted it but it still scares me. Social media is getting out of control. (Picture: Wilhelms memorial church in Berlin. One of the most beautiful prayer halls I know.)

LeahBergen Really? That‘s bizarre! 3mo

Cinfhen Wait?!? What!!!! That‘s creepy!!!! 3mo
Cinfhen Glad to see YOU back 3mo
Mimi28 Weird and scary 3mo
Izai.Amorim @merelybookish I'm glad I have a witness! 3mo
Izai.Amorim @Cathythoughts @batsy @Tanisha_A @Cinfhen @Mimi28 @merelybookish It's dangerous for your reputation if the machine posts stuff in your name. I have by accident called people with my mobile in my pocket (pressed the redial button). But to do a blurb on litsy you must press a lot of buttons in a sequence, can't happen by accident, especially if the phone is being charged.🤔 (edited) 3mo
Lcsmcat Did you notify @TimSpalding ? They ought to be aware of this! 3mo
TimSpalding I'm going looking now. I'll let you know what I find. Are there any complications here—like you have multiple accounts? (edited) 3mo
Izai.Amorim @TimSpalding No, I only have this one account. Never had the issue before. The text had a different, greenish color, looked like code. 3mo
TimSpalding Okay, so I can see the post, and that you deleted it six minutes after it was added. The post was about a book "Bait" by "M. Mabie." The title itself was added in 2016 and had only one review, deleted in 2017. The review text you had was "By Far was very ". (This is the only time that text has been used.) I can see it drew two likes. Presumably this is how you noticed it? 3mo
TimSpalding That's about the best I can do without my server guy on today. With his help it may be possible to find the request in recent server logs before they're rolled over, and thereby get the IP address of it. At the moment, my guess is that this was equivalent to what is known as the "butt dial." But I'll look for more data. 3mo
TimSpalding "No, I only have this one account. Never had the issue before. The text had a different, greenish color, looked like code."

Hmm. The text of the review? That's very odd. Honestly, I don't think the app can DO that. Hmm. Okay, I'll pass this to my colleagues to think about too. Oh, BTW, are you iOS or Android?
Izai.Amorim @TimSpalding I have both but I saw it on Android. Well, it was very late so don't worry to much about color. There was no proper review text only a lot of words without a meaning and some special characters like $#& Looked like randomly generated machine text. 3mo
Izai.Amorim @TimSpalding I noticed because I got Likes on it 😁 3mo
TimSpalding @Izai.Amorim Hmmm. Okay. The text in the actual database is simple. But it's possible that the delete action stripped it away somehow. Anyway, I'll look more and ask. I did look at recent posts and I'm not seeing anything similarly odd. 3mo
TimSpalding Okay, I've looked at the server logs and, unfortunately, they're rolled over at midnight, missing this interaction. 3mo
Izai.Amorim @TimSpalding If it ever happens again I won't delete it and message you. Maybe it was an Easter egg! Might be a sign of look. Will buy a lottery ticket. Have a good day. 3mo
DivineDiana Just seeing this post. So strange! Glad it was reported! 3mo
Izai.Amorim @DivineDiana software bugs. How are you and the sisters? I‘m thinking about doing a weekend trip to Istanbul sometime in the spring. 3mo

Izai.Amorim @LeahBergen Alexa was created by men so that they can finally have a woman who says yes to all their commands. Not sure what it will do to boys growing up around one. 4mo

batsy I'm with you on 16, 17, 18 🙌🏽 however my TBR seems to be ruling me 😂 4mo
Izai.Amorim @batsy I know yhe feeling. Remember, the TB R is big enough to take care of itself! 😂 4mo
Smrloomis @Izai.Amorim 😂 whatever works is what I say. I would be sad without mine but I don‘t feel the need to follow it at all, so it‘s not a problem for me 👍🏽 4mo
LauraBeth I‘ve been very tempted to just walk away from my TBR list. 4mo
Izai.Amorim @LauraBeth To me it was liberating. I have what I call a “borderline collection addiction” and just kept piling on. Then the feeling, boy I‘m late, hurry up, so many books to read.... Like a former alcoholic, now I live one book at a time. But I don‘t want to influence you 😁 4mo
Aimeesue I have no TBR list, either, just shelves full of yet to be read books that I might read someday if the mood strikes me. I don‘t do readathons either. I don‘t like to boss myself around with arbitrary rules. 😁 4mo
Izai.Amorim Soul mate! Yes, I never threw the books away and every now and then I read one, but most will never be read, and it's ok. Reading is a pleasure, I don't have much time for it, so I try to enjoy it as much as can. Artificial pressure kills the joy. 4mo
sisilia I‘m with you on 7, 17, 18 😁 I have massive amount of books looking sad, waiting for me to read them, and yes TBR list can be immidating. I dont have a specific list, just one on Goodreads that I somehow created. I read when I‘m in the mood, not because I must finish reading something. That works better for me so I dont feel guilty when life/work gets hectic sometimes 4mo
Suet624 Shoot. How did I miss your posts? And especially this one! I have been trying to come up with my list of 20 things and immediately become shy. Still haven‘t done it. I have shelves of books to read and call them my TBR but generally I run to the library and grab books instead of reading my own. So can my books actually be classified as TBR? 3mo
Suet624 And Alexa? NFW. just one more app that can report me to authorities. 3mo
Izai.Amorim @Suet624 I'd say that if you don't feel the obligation or the pressure to read them, then they're only books. 3mo
Izai.Amorim @Suet624 If you have gone through number 3 (growing up in a dictatorship), then Alexa is a no go. 3mo
Suet624 Good point on books just being books. And yes, I can imagine. Although I‘m afraid with smart 📺‘s and smart phones we might be doomed. 3mo
Annl I have been strolling back through some people‘s posts. I saw this about TBR lists and I can say I don‘t really have one per say. But, I do use the “to read” list on Litsy to keep a list of books which I would like to read, because sometimes I can‘t remember a book which I read about or someone told me about. The books which I really want to read, I take a photo of and keep in my photos on my phone. Your photos are beautiful! 2mo
Izai.Amorim @Annl Thank you. That's West Berlin. The ruin you see is the Wilhelm Memorial church. They didn't rebuild it after the war. They built the low round church instead. It's very beautiful inside, all blue light and it has a tasteful modern crussifix. I posted a picture. 2mo

I read the trilogy. First book was excellent. Second one was unconvincing and the way it ended let me wonder how could a third book follow. Well, it was possible by ignoring that end, as if it never happened. Third one was more of a thriller than politics. Also a very unconvincing plot. All in all, another example for why people shouldn‘t write series or trilogies unless they have figured out everything before they begin. Read the first one only.

Lynnsoprano Interesting juxtaposition: beautiful picture and scary words. 5mo
Izai.Amorim @Lynnsoprano @LauraBeth Yes, one can say a lot of bad things about Bavaria but not that they don't have a wonderful countryside with all the mountains and lakes. The most scary thing about Totalitarism is that most people don't seem to care, too distracted by the theatrics... Hoping for the best! 5mo

MayJasper Great to see you back Izai. I am starting to think my whole nation is driving each other mad with 'Brexit'. It is some sort of self-inflicted torture. 4mo
Izai.Amorim @MayJasper thanks! I follow the soap opera from here. It's making everyone crazy on the continent as well. It seems like they need some adult supervision... 😂 Hotel Brexifornia, you can negotiate any time you want but you can never leave... 4mo
MayJasper If only Hotel Brexifornia were true. It would suit me to never leave. Our negotiating politicians would be gradually taken away in straight jackets to a place of safety. We could put some technocrats in charge and we could all go back to arguing about football. It gets my vote 😂 4mo
Izai.Amorim @MayJasper I wish it won't happen. That would be almost criminal. Incredible how and internal Tory party disease could spread to the rest of the country. Let's hope for the best. 👍👍 4mo

The Second World War | John Keegan

It took me very long to find one: a facade with bullets holes. The Russians left their mark when they took Berlin in 1945. Until the mid 1990s one could see a lot of buildings like this one. Now their facades have all gotten a facelift. The wall was also torn down. I can understand why people crave normality but I dislike witnessing history bring wiped out.

sprainedbrain Wow. Such a powerful photo. 6mo
julesG I remember the houses with bullet holes in east Berlin. I used to visit my godmother, who lives in Berlin, nearly every summer between 1984 and 1989. I asked her about the "pock marks" in one particular building where we went twice a week to help an elderly woman. My godmother just said it was from the war and reminded me not to talk about it with the old woman. *sigh* I could have learned so much. 6mo

Tamra It‘s a tough subject sometimes. I can see both sides of the argument. On the other hand, I have no problem with removing racist relics from the past and it isn‘t just in the south. In our MN capital we have a statue of someone who fought in the civil war, but he also participated in a massacre of Native Americans. I‘d have no problem removing it. 6mo
Tamra I should add not that I want to cover up history, but I also don‘t want to honor despicable acts or people. Now I just thought about Frump monuments - 🤢🙀😹 6mo
Izai.Amorim @Tamra @julesG War is a terrible thing and WW2 was apocalyptic. But something very good came out of it: the European Union. Since then we‘ve had peace and prosperity in Europe. The EU is above all a peace project, not an economic one. If we still had war ruins all over Europe to remind people of that, populists wouldn‘t get that many votes. Brexit and stuff can only happen because people have forgotten. That‘s my issue with the facelifts. 6mo
Tamra @Izai.Amorim I totally get it. 6mo
Izai.Amorim @Tamra In my opinion monuments aren't about history but storytelling, biased and one-sided. Many are truly offensive and should be removed but not destroyed or simply relocated. They belong inside a museum, department of "History of Political Discourse" or "History of Racism ." Put in the right context with enough background information, people could still learn from them. (But is there really the wish to learn from the past?)? 6mo
Tamra @Izai.Amorim I agree, having a collection in a location for people to choose to explore is better than a public place of honor. But then yes, will people choose to learn? 6mo
DivineDiana Good to see you back! 🙂 6mo

I got the tagged book for my flight home. Had never heard about the author. He was governor of Canada! Diplomat and writer. The first book of the trilogy was written one hundred years ago, a spy story. Very curious about this "James Bond".

LeahBergen I have The 39 Steps waiting on my shelves. 9mo
Izai.Amorim @LeahBergen It‘s the first one in the trilogy. 9mo
BarbaraBB Haven‘t seen you for a while. Hope all is well! 7mo

Izai.Amorim @BarbaraBB Thanks for coming by and checking. I hadn't realized I have been away for so long. A lot of stuff happening but at least there is light at the end of the tunnel. I hope you're fine. 7mo
CouronneDhiver Been awhile... how are you? 6mo
Izai.Amorim @CouronneDhiver Thanks for asking. I'm fine, thanks. It was a tough year and I didn't have much time for anything including social media. I haven't read much, when I have free time I write. But soon my manuscript will be done and I'll be more active here. How about you? How's life in Canada at the moment? 6mo
LauraBeth Just came by to see how you‘re doing! 👋 6mo
Izai.Amorim Hi there @LauraBeth long time no see. All in all I'm fine, thanks. A lot of stuff happening to me and around me but I'm keeping my cool and trying to make the best out of things. As they say, a crisis is a terrible thing to waste. How are you and family? How's daughter? Mine has moved to Scotland (college) and I miss her a lot. Son is finishing school next summer... They grow up quicker than we think. 6mo
LauraBeth I‘m sure you‘ll emerge out of that mess better than before! Scotland?! 🙀 That‘s what you get for raising smart and independent kids 😀. My daughter started high school this year. We‘re ready for her and her attitude to leave 😂 6mo

From the series "skills you need to develop when traveling and then later forget": How do you wash your hands with warm water? You move them very quickly from left to right to left to right... It probably there is a very logical explanation why you need 2 faucets but I can't figure it out. ??

GingerAntics I‘ve never been able to figure that one out either. 9mo
Aimeesue Different plumbing system. Hot water comes from the water heater, which is fed by a water storage tank which may not be safe to drink (algae, bugs, mice on occasion) Cold water comes right from the water main, so is safe. Lots of places just haven't updated the plumbing. 9mo
umbrellagirl Fill the basin from both. 9mo

sprainedbrain Ha! I‘ve always been confused by this type of faucet! 9mo
Sarah83 My favourite "sport" ??? 9mo
Izai.Amorim @GingerAntics @umbrellagirl @sprainedbrain @Sarah83 Good to know that I'm not the only one 9mo
Izai.Amorim @Aimeesue It makes a lot of sense seeing from this perspective. Thanks! 9mo
Sarah83 😁👍 9mo
Aimeesue @Izai.Amorim I have this thing where, if people ask, in an astonished tone of voice, "That makes no sense! WHY would you do that?" about absolutely anything, I'm almost compelled to find out what the reasoning was. Its usually something very practical and it's always interesting! ? 9mo
Izai.Amorim @Aimeesue so you're slowly becoming an expert on the mysteries of life! 😀👍👍 9mo
Aimeesue @Izai.Amorim A repository of completely useless knowledge, more like. 😂😂😂 9mo
GingerAntics @Aimeesue oooooooh, okay that makes sense. I never knew that. I love some good useless knowledge, too. No idea why. It‘s just fun to pop out some trivia every now and then. 9mo
Aimeesue @GingerAntics My grandfather was an engineer, and apparently I inherited his curiosity about …everything. How stuff works, Why this material is better than that, Why things were put together that way. It's an exercise in empathy, history, economics and behavioral economics and I use that outlook every single day. I work for people with autism. Often, the way they act/react doesn't make "sense" to others. I try to figure it out and?? 9mo
Aimeesue "Interpret" for people who can't tell others WHY so that other people can understand and change whatever it is that they're doing that's causing the "problem." I love my job. ? 9mo
Izai.Amorim @Aimeesue Oh, I'm also a big fan of so-called useless knowledge. Like how calenders are calculated, why Easter is early/late this year, why so many Asians can't drink much alcohol, etc. There is always a plausible explanation if you dig deep enough, sometimes historical. It's much fun! 9mo
Izai.Amorim @Aimeesue I also come from a family of engineers and studied myself civil engineering and architecture. I'm the one in the family in charge of logistics, packing stuff, and assembling furniture. 😀 9mo
Suet624 I see that @Aimeesue has provided you with the answer. Apparently I‘ve lived in way too many old houses because two faucets made total sense to me. 8mo
Suet624 And why can‘t Asians drink much alcohol? 8mo
Izai.Amorim @Suet624 They were smart enough to find out that if they boil the water, it becomes safe to drink. Even smarter to add leaves to make it taste well. They developed a tea culture. We were stupid, only figured out that alcohol is safe to drink, went for wine and beer. The ones who couldn‘t stand alcohol died out, poisoned by Flint tap water. The Asians didn‘t go through this natural selection process so didn‘t need to develop tolerance to alcohol... 8mo

After more than 3 decades, back in Scottland, helping my daughter move into her dorm. What a great place! Scotts are so gentle and kind, and have such a nice accent! I have to come back with more time...

DivineDiana Happy move in day! 9mo
Izai.Amorim @DivineDiana Thanks! It's been a lot of work (shopping for stuff) and we aren't done yet but almost there! 9mo
GingerAntics I have to agree about the Scottish accent. I love finding other people who appreciate it, but it always makes me chuckle, too. Every Scottish person I know always says they can‘t get Siri to understand them. lol I hope your daughter enjoys the start of school. 9mo

Izai.Amorim @Cathythoughts Thank you. I wonder if after 4 years she'll pick some of the accent up. 9mo
Suet624 How are you dealing with your daughter going off to school? I was a mess! 8mo
Izai.Amorim @Suet624 She left home last year for a gap year in London so we had time to get used to it. It was very depressing, a big hole in our lives. But she‘s very happy there and that‘s what matters. Thanks for asking! 8mo

Izai.Amorim @Suet624 It was a pleasure. I hope you‘re well and that Lyme has given you a break. Congratulations to the primaries. Vermont writing history again! 9mo
Suet624 What a lovely message to wake up to. Doing a new treatment for the Lyme. Can‘t tell if it‘s working but it‘s making my hair fall out. Just adding insult to injury. 😒 I‘m so surprised you know about our primaries! Yup, Vermonters ... gotta love ‘em. Not sure she can win - incumbents rarely lose here but she‘s a very credible candidate. I hope you are well and things are feeling a bit easier for you. 9mo
Izai.Amorim @Suet624 At this very moment I'm very fine because I'm doing what I love the most: writing. I'm sitting in an almost empty library in Berlin and working on my manuscript. The last 1/4 of it. It's a family portrait (my fa mily) from 1889 to 1989. I'm now in 1964. It's a tough book because it's not funny I prefer commedy. But I have to get it out of my system! Wish you strength! You'll beat Lyme. Vermont rocks! 9mo

The tagged book (nonfiction, doorstopper) is about Walter Benjamin and his unfinished Passages work. I have to think about it every time l come here to the new Walter Benjamin square. The colonnade, the fake 1930's architecture. What would he say about the place? In my opinion a marvelous urban space, unknown and not frequented by tourists. A great place to spend the evening.

Seen on a façade: "There is no life outside of Bavaria. In case it does, then not as good." (free translation) Don't understand why in Latin. Bavarian dialect would sound more authentic and convincing. Irony?

It was extremely cold around here, now getting better. I have been sick for one week, very bad cold, but I‘m feeling much better right now, though not fit yet. Have missed a lot here, I guess, will try to catch up in the next days.

Thanks @Cathythoughts for the tag. 1. Probably unknown to all, Sítio do Pica-pau Amarelo by Monteiro Lobato. 2. Three books by Irvin Yallom (Love‘s Executioner was one of them). 3. None, when the book is over I forget them. 4. I‘m not going to burn my bridges here ?. 5. @Anna40 #tuesdaytidbits. @JenlovesJT47

JenlovesJT47 Lol at number 4! 😅 1y
