Miracle Fair: Selected Poems of Wislawa Szymborska
Miracle Fair: Selected Poems of Wislawa Szymborska | Wislawa Szymborska
3 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
"Miracle Fair is Szymborska at her very best."Harvard Book Review Winner of the Heldt Prize for Translation. A new translation of the Nobel Prize-winning Polish poet, with an introduction by Czeslaw Milosz. This long-awaited volume samples the full range of Wislawa Szymborska's major themes: the ironies of love, the wonders of nature's beauty, and the illusory character of art. Szymborska's voice emerges as that of a gentle subversive, self-deprecating in its wit, yet graced with a gift for coaxing the extraordinary out of the ordinary.

#NationalPoetryMonth Day 4: Along with Zbigniew Herbert, Wislawa Szymborska is my favorite of the post-WWII Polish poets. I find her cool irony, typical of the work of the period, is freshened by a sincerity & even moments of hope. This shines through in my favorite poem of hers which is a reminder that “not every sentence there/ means death“ despite the wars & ruins as she explains the joys of earth to a Yeti.
