Black Flowers | Jesse Muchmore
post image
Mehso-so

Black Flowers is a very well written book of odd short stories. Some stories were great and creepy, others were average and strange. The writing style is excellent and Muchmore was able to detail the characters and setting flawlessly. The cover is gorgeous and reflects the feel of the book. Overall, a quick, fast paced, eclectic read. I received a copy for free from BookSirens and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Superbly written, executed and edited, The Scarlet Huntress will leave you wanting more of the story. Fantasy, love, magic, witches, and shifters, yes, please. And that cover! My only major gripe is wanting a deeper romance factor. It had an insta-love vibe which kind of annoyed me. I am impressed, and surprised at how much I liked The Scarlet Huntress. I'll be sure to keep an eye on the continuation of "Scarlet's" story, and this author.

Very close to being 5 stars. I generally do not like books this long. This one took a while to get the story rolling....kinda dragged out in the beginning, and in other parts. Very unique story and the characters were well developed. Many twists and turns. It was woven masterfully. A good, unique read for fall. I enjoyed the characters, atmosphere and story. The book could have been GREAT but pacing issues and the simplistic writing style bogged it down. I didn't care for the term "bone houses"; a better concept could have been found.

Odd, strange, unusual. Dark, sinister, twisted. Confusing. I wanted to like this so much, but it didn't make much sense. The writing style is like a puzzle box full of corner pieces, impossible to put together and get the full picture. The premise had heart, the artwork and effects were a unique touch, and the creep factor was definitely there, so that is why I am generously giving 3 stars.

Cute and quirky, but I expected something more. Although semi-entertaining, the MC's inner monologue bordered the fine line between charismatic and annoying; so much of it was unnecessary. There were a few LOL moments, especially during friendly banter. I was interested in the story but it had pacing issues, and it could have easily been 300 pages instead of 400. I could, however, see this being a funny Netflix-type movie.

I really wanted to like this, but I didn't. It fell flat, felt superficial, and struggled to pull me in. It's a short read, otherwise I would have quit. The writing style left much to be wanted, and the overuse of unnecessary hyphenatation (almost on every page) grated on my nerves. It lacked passion but had potential, which is really sad because I had high expectations. Sadly, 2 stars.

A quick adventure. Action, love, monsters, a secluded tower in the wood, a kickass heroine princess, the fight for survival, the necessary elements of a fantasy...it's all here. And with that cliffhanger, how could I not read #2? Onward I go!

Not my usual or preferred type of story. I enjoyed it but it's slow pace failed to grasp my attention at times. Full of details and emotion, especially the last 20 or so pages when I didn't want it to end. It was a solid 3 stars, but the ending bumped it up to 4.

A simple photo for this one because the book wasn't great. I wasn't sure what to expect. I'm not a fan of sci-fi but wanted to read something different. I wavered between 2 and 3 stars. After a slow start, this was fast paced, full of action and strong characters. The writing was mediocre, and the story was confusing and far-fetched. It had trouble keeping my interest. Not sure if I liked it enough to read #2.

Creepy, dark and weird. Just what I expected. The Mayqueen Murders is a good fall read. I would have rated it a 4 instead of 3 but it had pacing issues and some aspects seemed implausible. The first half was a slow burn but I really sunk my teeth into it after that. I may have nightmares tonight.

Eloquent, rhythmic, magical and hypnotic prose can surely be found here, but wound around, neither here nor there, is a story somewhere. I just kept waiting for something to actually happen. The plot itself is hindered bogged down by confusing, senseless details for the sake of world building. Reading this was like swimming in a pool of tar. I teetered between 2 or 3 stars. Ultimately, I'm giving it a 3 because I liked the story (once I found it).

One star. "Women and witchcraft" where? These stories lacked substance, heart, women, and witchcraft. Most of the writing was subpar, and some of the stories made no sense while others didn't even have a conclusion. I'm still scratching my head. I enjoyed 2 of the tales, maybe. If you're looking for a good anthology with creep factor, try Slasher Girls and Monster Boys.

The idea behind Compulsion was great, but the story was severely lacking. It moved slowly because it seemed like nothing crucial ever happened, and I had a hard time connecting with the bland characters. I struggled to find the major conflict, or the point of the book. I couldn't tell where it was going or what needed to be resolved. Overall, a mess that left me disappointed.

The most heart breaking book I've read in a long time. Although I enjoyed the flowing writing style, the past tense addressed direction irked me. I would have liked a bit more of a conclusion but I guess that's part of the appeal of the story. 3/5 stars..

A unique YA horror, mystery, thriller mash-up that sucked me in, but the story quickly became confusing. I enjoyed the flowing and atmospheric writing style but the book felt too long. I expected a cutesy-wutesy contemporary but you won't find that here. Real world drama lies in these pages, and one character I wanted to smack silly.
