New Year, New You

Pictured above about 50 books I own that I have never read. (Note my judgmental dog in the background) I‘ve come to the realization I own about 250 unread books (physical, ebook & audiobook) I‘m making an ambitious goal this year to not buy any new books for a full year. I‘ll make a library exception but otherwise, I‘m reading down my TBR exclusively. Let‘s see how long I last. 📚📚📚📚

mcctrish I can‘t not buy books but my unread book pile is much more extensive than this 😬 the pandemic really got me out of the borrowing books habit and book outlet really enabled me. I am going to really try and read down my pile and only buy keepers #weshallseehowifare 4mo

5feet.of.fury I pulled down 20 from my TBR & I‘m on a buying ban until they are read. I don‘t mind having some backlog, but there‘s no reason for me to have it overflowing with stuff, especially when there are a bunch I was really excited for that keep getting passed over. You have some goodies there, I really liked that Alex Finlay! 4mo

marleed @mcctrish My unread books are shelved alongside my completed books in my reading room, but I distinguish them with post-it note tab on the spine (it works!). When I pull one out for next up consideration chances are it will have a 2020 publishing date! I spent a fortune in physical books during lockdown- it really was my comfort when I saw so few people in person. 4mo

mcctrish @marleed I have a bookcase ( and floor pile) in my bedroom and a wheelie cart in the living room with my unread books. The joy I felt when my books got delivered during lockdown(s) ❤️❤️❤️ some of mine are actual comfort books, they could remain unread and I will cart them wherever I might go 4mo

Confession: I no longer love the name of my #NewYearWhoDis event. It echoes a meme that was part of a particular moment in time…but it‘s started to feel a little bit dated and disingenuous to me. It might even be an example of cultural appropriation? “Dis” isn‘t slang I‘d ever feel comfortable using IRL.

ANYWAY. I‘m thinking of rebranding next year. What do you think? Yea? Nay? Ideas? My best so far is #AuldLangSpine (as a nod to NYE tradition).

monalyisha One potential downfall: #AuldLangSpine certainly doesn‘t shorten nicely. ALS is kind of already taken. 🙈 2y

BookNAround I really like auldlangspine. You could also do a play on the book you tagged for this : #newyearnewreads or something like that. 2y

monalyisha Hi @RaeLovesToRead! It‘s an event that kicks off on NYE. Around Nov/Dec, I match people up depending on their particular taste. Then, you spend the first month of the New Year reading from a list of your match‘s favorite books from the previous year. The matching survey that I use is *very* thorough. It‘s a way to “meet” another Litten & join the community — one that doesn‘t require a monetary commitment. Some folks read from their lists all year! 2y

My #NYWD wrap up. I was able to read seven books from the list @Cinfhen shared & enjoyed all. The Guncle was my favorite but I loved The Storyteller almost as much. I am glad to have been introduced to Early Morning Riser, The Anthropocene Reviewed, and the Helen Ellis essays because they were not on my radar. The rest had been on my TBR so this was the push I needed to read them! Thanks to @monalyisha for hosting and for a great match.

I am having the hardest time leaving 2021 behind. For lots of reasons, I can‘t concentrate or make the usual fresh start that I always love about the new year (part of this is definitely a lack of good sleep and some other “life issues” shall we say). So I‘m going to try accepting that I‘m in a crap mood and listen to this book. It looks happy, right? Ok, seriously though, I think I‘m going to agree with her a lot so let‘s see.

I‘m so excited about my #NewYearWhoDis list! The only one I‘ve read is 10. A Gentleman In Moscow, which is one of my favorite books ever, so I can‘t wait to dig into the rest of these! I actually have The Midnight Library and The Murmur of Bees on my shelf and Kindle respectively, waiting to be read, so I‘ll probably start the year off with those while I look into getting copies of the others.

monalyisha @Cinfhen Basically, you create a list of your favorite reads from this past year & submit it to me. I use my magical powers to match you up with a reader with similar taste. Then, you trade lists & commit to read off of their list during the month of January. It‘s not required but lots of people use their list to guide their reading all year! It‘s not a physical swap — just a partnership to strengthen bonds & community! 2y

MallenNC @Megabooks I‘ve read a lot of nonfiction this year, but many were heavy topics that I wasn‘t sure someone else would want to start their new year off reading! So my list is mostly fiction. I did include The Lost Family on my list, and I got that one from one of your reviews! 2y

Megabooks @MallenNC I think about what others will like as well. I also try to come up with a representative sample of what I‘ve read, like the best memoirs, best lit fic, my fave short story collection, etc. I‘m glad you enjoyed TLF enough to include it. Super interesting book!! 2y

MallenNC @Megabooks I try to pick ones that I have continued to think about. So TLF fits that! And that aren‘t part of a series unless they can stand alone. I will say that this year‘s list wasn‘t as easy to make as some of my previous ones, where my favorites were very solid. 2y

So, I‘ll be posting the registration form at 8am EST tomorrow morning (Thursday, 11/11).

Remember, the event is limited to 80 participants (which is a hearty number, I think! Still, not everyone may get in before we‘re at capacity…so be vigilant!).

For all you super-preppers out there, I‘ve created some #NewYearWhoDis Sign-Up Tips.

The first one is the most important!

1) Create your list of favorite books from this past year in advance. This will cut-down on the amount of time you spend thinking about it when it comes time to sign-up. Keep in mind: I‘ll be asking for a numbered list of no fewer than 5, no more than 20. You‘ll want to list both title & author.

More tips in comments! 👇🏻

monalyisha 2) Make note of which genres are represented in the list of favorites you‘ve created (Literary fic? Memoir? Sci-Fi? Romance? etc).

3) Think about which genres you‘d most like to read in the coming year (& which you don‘t).

4) Optional (but helpful): Try to remember if the books on your list have any triggers. Do *you* have any triggers you‘ll want to avoid?

5) Work on your happy dance so you can bust a move when you make the cut. 💃 (edited) 2y

monalyisha This year, I‘m also thinking of creating a Waiting List. That way, at the very least, I‘ll be able to gauge how many people are interested vs. how many are able to sign-up (which I can then take into consideration the following year). I‘ve gotten some questions about #NewYearWhoDis recently. So! This is just a quick note to say that I *am* planning on running this event again. I usually post the sign-ups mid-late November. Registration is set to a limited number of participants, so I‘d recommend checking on the hashtag periodically.

Megabooks @monalyisha I‘m strictly mobile (phone/iPad) and I find it has a better interface than GR. Plus I like all the graphs - mood of book, fiction/NF, star rating down to 0.25⭐️. I love that I can easily track how many pages I‘ve read day-to-day. I love how it makes tracking your challenges easy. And their tags are superb! It‘s just a much more intuitive interface for me. You can import your GR if you‘re already using that. 2y

But what i‘m really wondering is: can I create *custom* shelves in SG? 2y

Finally (so far!) is #BFC21 I started to get fitter last year, lost 10 kilos, but after a bad migraine triggered a flare up of my condition, I‘ve gotten seriously out of shape again. So this months goals are:
📚Read at least 15 books from my TBR
🏋🏻‍♀️Get outside & move for at least 30mins per day
🍽Cut back on the sweets
🥕Eat more veggies
🧘🏻‍♀️Stop & breathe every day

My library had Under the Udala Trees and the book is already on its way to me.

Fly Girls seems to be so up my alley.

I tried to read another of Haynes books and bailed on it, so I‘ll probably wait a little bit before trying her again, but this might be a good opportunity to try her again.

The last two sounds great too

monalyisha I was going to weigh in (unsolicited)...but I‘ve actually only read Echo. So I‘m not much help. 😅 It was a beautiful book, though! (I found myself wanting to read it again, except on audio, because of the deep focus on music! I bet it‘s so good that way!) Anyway, enjoy! 🎉 3y

MallenNC Hi Amanda! I‘m so looking forward to reading from your list. As far as where to start on mine, it depends on whether you want something heavy or light! For light, you can‘t go wrong with The Switch, which was really fun. I liked that it had an older woman as a main character. 3y

MallenNC For a more serious topic, Know My Name was so good, and I had hesitated on read it because it is about the Stanford rape case (obvious trigger warning), but Chanel Miller is such a good writer, it was one of my favorites. 3y

MallenNC Echo is really good, especially on audio. I listened to it after my 11 year old godson read and loved it. The music in the audiobook really added to the enjoyment. And This Tender Land was also really good on audio. 3y

Bad news/Good news:

I‘ve been fighting a cold for the past couple of days. It‘s nothing major...but I realized I should stay home according to my workplace‘s rightfully cautious guidelines.

I slept in & had bizarre dreams about my grandmother texting me from beyond the grave, & monkeys being loose in the hallway.

And now... I‘ll be posting more #NewYearWhoDis matches from my snotty place on the couch! Hooray(?)!
