Milkman | Anna Burns
post image

Exciting #roll100 picks for July! Milkman is from @youneverarrived ‘s #NYWD list years ago. I hope I get to it now, Katie! Marsh is an #aardvark backlog from their first month. I meant to read the sequel to Moloka‘i more quickly than 5 years later. 😂😱

Once again, completely surprised that I owned these three audiobooks. 😂🤦🏻‍♀️ I know Moxie is a memoir, but otherwise I‘ll be surprised! 👍🏻

BarbaraBB Ooh Milkman! It‘s good! 3mo
CarolynM I loved Milkman. You have to think about it, but it‘s worth it. Hope you enjoy. (edited) 3mo
youneverarrived Ohh fab let me know what you think if you get to it! Like @CarolynM said it‘s one you have to think about but it‘s so good. 3mo

The Great Godden | Meg Rosoff

Pickpick

An atmospheric summer read, reminding me of the hazy, lazy days of summer, and the angst that happens wondering how people perceive you. A family goes on their yearly summer lake vacation, but things do not go as normal when the Godden boys join them. Recommended to me by @TheLudicReader for #NYWD 2022. Thanks for the rec - I really enjoyed it!

TheLudicReader It‘s a slow burn, for sure, but a great book. Glad you enjoyed it. 3mo

We‘ve got some beautiful EARLY lilies in this week‘s #BookReport thanks to the warm weather in February!

The tagged graphic memoir was my favorite book this week. Malaka looks back on her childhood visits to her dad and stepmom in Egypt and how their relationship evolved. Fancy Bear was an incredibly interesting look into the world of 5 noteworthy hacking incidents that show their evolution. Stone Angel was lovely @vivastory ! Thanks for ⬇️

Megabooks Putting it on your #nywd/#ALSpine list! I‘m glad I finally got to it. Honest is great if you love those messy family books like Jennifer Close‘s. A Southern family gets together for a funeral then a wedding. BQ reread for #CampLitsy23!! @BarbaraBB is so on top of it and has some great questions in store! Electric I just finished and learned a lot of about the history and cutting edge of study of our body‘s electrobiome! (edited) 4mo
Megabooks Flux was really confusing and a bit of a disappointment. 🤷🏻‍♀️ glad it wasn‘t chosen for CL and I nominated it. 😂 Dear was an interesting look at ballet and its relationship to women and their bodies, particularly in regards to Balanchine. I probably wasn‘t interested enough in the topic to rate it high. Maame was a bit of a disappointment but 🤐 because it was for #LMPBC! (edited) 4mo
squirrelbrain I agree Meg, @BarbaraBB has some fabulous questions for BQ! I have Maame on my physical TBR shelf, but I‘m not drawn to it at the moment. 🤷‍♀️ 4mo

Megabooks @Cinfhen I can‘t believe we agree about two books! Maame was definitely MEH. 🫤 (edited) 4mo
Megabooks @squirrelbrain you can definitely put it off imo. Just okay. 4mo
Cinfhen Hahaha ~ so true!!! 4mo
mcctrish I just ordered Maame from book outlet, I knew I‘d seen it somewhere 🤣🤣 4mo

All the Young Men | Ruth Coker Burks, Kevin Carr O'Leary

Pickpick

My 1st book completed for #AuldLangSpine and it‘s a 5-star read! Ruth Coker Burks is an angel— and I don‘t toss that word around lightly. In 1986 she began helping young men with AIDS in her community in Arkansas. Nobody else would do it —not their families, not the doctors and nurses, not the preachers, not the “good Christians” in town. She recognized them as human beings and gave them dignity in death. A powerful, lovely read. Thanks, Deb!

Amiable @GinaKButler This is the book that completed my GR challenge for the year! 😀 (edited) 9mo

#top22of22

I read exactly 200 books in 2022 and these, in no particular order, are my favourites.

I feel like this year has been a great mix of the serious and not-so-serious. I also found some great books on prize lists, as well as gifts from friends here on Litsy.

Here‘s to 2023, Happy New Bookish Year, everyone!

jlhammar So many good ones!! I still need to get to Invisible Child and really looking forward to trying Rebecca Wait. 9mo
batsy An interesting list and I'm always happy to see The Trees show up in people's favourites ❤️ Happy New Year! 9mo
LeeRHarry I‘m excited that Fault Lines and After Story made it on there 😊 Screenshot ! HNY! 🎉 (edited) 9mo

MicheleinPhilly I see some overlap! And I own 8 more of these. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Perhaps I will read them in 2023. 😉 Happy New Year, Helen! 😘 9mo
TrishB Fab list 👍🏻 some overlap and some I‘ve got ready for next year! That bodes well. Happy New Year 🥂🥂 9mo
mcctrish I‘m happy I‘ve read a few of these, the rest become part of the 2023 TBR 🤣🤣 9mo
Cinfhen Excellent list! Definitely taking notes 📝 9mo
Tamra Lovely selections! 💕 9mo
Deblovestoread Some in common, some already on my shelves and some to add. My favorite kind of list. Happy New Year! 9mo
JillR I‘ve been waiting for your list! Glad to see a few on there that I‘m hoping to get to in 2023. Happy New Year! ✨ 9mo
squirrelbrain @LeeRHarry - Fault Lines was from your #nywd list,of course, and @CarolynM sent me After Story. I read so many great Aussie books this year; Tiddas and Tirra Lirra nearly made it on to this list as well. 9mo
squirrelbrain We overlap a lot I think @MicheleinPhilly @TrishB (and dare I say not just in books?!) 🤣 9mo
squirrelbrain I think we have very similar taste in books @JillR 9mo
JillR @squirrelbrain I think we do, I‘ve always enjoyed books you‘ve given a good review 😊 9mo
TrishB Definitely 😁 just not the scary spreadsheets…. 9mo
Megabooks I‘m excited to get to this in 2023 9mo
Megabooks Great job Helen!! Happy New Year! 🎉🎉🎉 9mo

Pickpick

A quiet novel full of compassion (for others, but also finding it for yourself) and a healthy dose of wit. I loved the Neons, the nuns, and especially Agatha. How she slowly grew her confidence; and her journey through questioning her convictions while never judging those around her for theirs.

Thank you for the recommendation @monalyisha 🎉 I don't think I'd have even heard of this one if it wasn't on your list last year!

JamieArc I want to stack this one whenever I see posts about it! 10mo
Kristin_Reads Ha! I hadn‘t seen your post yet when I just posted mine about this book. Loved it 😊 10mo

TheKidUpstairs @JamieArc do it! I'm so glad I finally picked it up. It was on @monalyisha 's #NewYearWhoDis last from last year, but I didn't get to it in January. I was getting so excited about #AuldLangSpine so I decided to finally pick it up and it was totally worth it. 10mo
TheKidUpstairs @Kristin_Reads I always say great minds read alike! 10mo
TheKidUpstairs @Chelsea.Poole woo hoo! 10mo
JamieArc Of course it was on @monalyisha ‘s #NYWD list! She‘s my #AuldLangSpine match this year and I love all of her picks. 10mo
monalyisha @JamieArc I almost want to bend the rules AGAIN and say you can count this one for #AuldLangSpine since I‘m your partner and it *was* on my list…at one time. 😅 10mo
monalyisha @TheKidUpstairs I‘m so glad you enjoyed it! I really loved it. Whenever I came across someone putting it down, I could feel myself getting defensive. 😅 It got so little attention, I felt like it deserved for all of the attention it *did* get to be *good* attention. I honestly love a book with not much plot to speak of. 🤷‍♀️ What can I say? 10mo

It‘s always exciting when the #ALSpine match lists arrive, and @BeckyWithTheGoodBooks has great picks to choose from! As usual, I‘m going to take my potential reads beyond January!

The checked books are ones I‘ve already read, so to start 2023 I‘ll be reading a couple from my owned TBR 📚and a couple library reads 🔍. I already have True Biz waiting on my airplane moded Kindle, and Night Film was a #NYWD pick I never got to a couple years ago.

monalyisha Oh, I like your emoji/symbol system! I thought this nonfic pic looked totally engrossing. 10mo
dariazeoli @monalyisha Thanks! And that book is definitely one I‘d like to get to in 2023. I can‘t believe the tsunami was that long ago 10mo
BeckyWithTheGoodBooks This is awesome! I will get organized and post soon! ❤️ 10mo

JamieArc 🎉🎉. Time to finalize my list of top books! 10mo
monalyisha I know, @JamieArc! Me too! It‘s been a weird reading year. Kind of all over the place, with lots of “just okay/perfectly fine” books. I think my list is going to be shorter than is typical for me…but the books that make it on will be ones I‘ve truly loved! 10mo

Read4life I haven‘t participated before but I‘m excited to join. Also a little nervous not knowing what to expect. Definitely going out of my comfort zone. 🤓 10mo
TheKidUpstairs My list is shaping up to be shorter than past years as well! But the ones I've loved, I've really really loved. But, like you, lots of good but not great reads. 10mo
monalyisha @TheKidUpstairs We really are reading twins! 😉👯‍♀️ 10mo
Amandajoy Time to finalize my list! 10mo
monalyisha @AmandaJoy Heck yes! 🙌 10mo
Megabooks Trying to narrow 50 I‘ve tagged on the storygraph down to 20 or fewer. Very excited! 10mo
monalyisha @Megabooks It must be challenging with how much you read each year! Good luck! 10mo
CarolynM My list will likely be shorter this year too😒 Not a lot of really great reads to choose from. 10mo
Chelsea.Poole Eekk! I love this event not only for the actual match but I love to see everyone‘s lists! Can‘t wait to see what you come up with @Megabooks 👀 10mo
Megabooks @Chelsea.Poole thanks! And 💯 same as far as peeping all the lists! 10mo

#MargaretLaurence, although she died many years ago, is the author I've most wanted to meet. She had such immense wisdom and grace.

New books references come from Litsy (natch!) from award nomination lists, and from friends.

Thanks to @Amiable for last year's #NYWD book with an amazing twist!

Amiable I forgot I included this one on the NYWD list! It was a fun read. 11mo

#AuldLangSpine (formerly #NewYearWhoDis) is an annual, month-long reading event starting on January 1st.

When registration opens in November, you send me a list of your favorite reads from the past year. I play matchmaker & very intentionally pair you with another Litten (based on genre preferences, etc). I send you their list & you begin the new year by reading & reviewing books they loved in the previous year. It‘s a cost-free way to connect! ✨

Cinfhen I‘m assuming you saw this @CBee @Deblovestoread @JamieArc 11mo
CBee @Cinfhen I did!! And early access too cause I‘ll sure as heck be voting on Tuesday 👍🏻👍🏻 11mo
Prairiegirl_reading How long should the lists be? 11mo
See All 27 Comments
monalyisha Hi, @Prairiegirl_reading 👋🏻! I haven‘t put the finishing touches on the sign-up form yet but I can tell you this: in previous years, the requirement has been between 5 & 20 books. I‘m thinking of upping the minimum this year (because if someone‘s read even 1 out of the 5, it doesn‘t leave them much to work with). Very likely, it‘ll be a minimum of 7. (edited) 11mo
FantasyChick WooHoo!! I'll be stalking your page waiting for the sign up. You know I look forward to this every year! 11mo
MallenNC I am starting to think about my list! 11mo
monalyisha @MallenNC Same here! I think mine may be shorter than in previous years, to be honest. I haven‘t read a ton that I‘ve flat-out loved! 11mo
Cinfhen I voted on Tuesday so I‘m all set too @CBee @MallenNC ♥️ 11mo
MallenNC @monalyisha I‘m thinking I may have fewer five star reads this year, but I might end up being surprised when I look back. 11mo
CBee @Cinfhen woo hoo!! 11mo

mcipher Hoping that next year is the one I actually see the signup in time 😅 11mo
Emilymdxn Yes so excited!!! 11mo
SeaToSkyes I think I misunderstood the directions from this year; I thought we spent the whole year reading the chosen books. Oops! 😬 11mo
monalyisha @SeaToSkyes Ha! Well, hopefully you enjoyed them! I didn‘t even notice because a lot of people voluntarily choose to do just that. 11mo
Amandajoy I‘ve been eagerly awaiting signups! 11mo
