Fight Club
Fight Club | Chuck Palahniuk
This book that was made into the highly succesful movie Fight Club starring Brad Pitt and Edward Norton Every weekend, in basements and parking lots across the country, young men with good white-collar jobs and absent fathers take off their shoes and shirts and fight each other barehanded for as long as they have to. Then they go back to those jobs with blackened eyes and loosened teeth and the sense that they can handle anything. Fight Club is the invention of Tyler Durden, projectionist, waiter and dark, anarchic genius. And it's only the beginning of his plans for revenge on a world where cancer support groups have the corner on human warmth.

This book was sent by a loving friend. I cannot believe how many reads I have gotten in the mail over the summer. I am forever grateful. This one was a nice surprise and a pretty comical read. I have to say I enjoyed it quite a bit more than I thought I would. I almost didn't read it but I'm glad I did.

Jee_HookedOnBookz Saw the movie haven't read the book! Glad you enjoyed it! 😊 How are you? 4mo

“Tyler says I‘m nowhere near hitting the bottom, yet. And if I don‘t fall all the way, I can‘t be saved.”

In Fight Club, self-destruction is a way to discover the truth of your own heart and to be ‘hitting the bottom‘, you have to lose and sacrifice everything in your life.

I realized that although I broke the rules with #90sSpringFling & talked about Fight Club, I didn't review it. A so-so as it's not the book for me--too grossly wacko, but I think Palahniuk shows some demented brilliance in especially the twist. My e-book's afterward about fight clubs in culture was fascinating. I never would have read it except for the #buddyread but now I want to watch the movie full on instead of the parts/pieces I saw before.

Cinfhen I think the movie is better!! The ambiguity of the book flows better on film. But it was still wacko and too violent and I think somewhat juvenile too. Thanks for joining in on discussion. It helped me appreciate the book way more. 6mo

Thank you all for participating in #90sSpringFling. It was so much fun to see how we all over the world lived our lives through the 90s, listened to the same music and dressed the same way.
The Fight Club buddy read has really taken the book to new level. @Cinfhen thank you for organizing. I hope you‘ve had a great wedding party tonight. 💕

Next will be a #BelowZer00s buddy read (and party 🎉🎈), January 10-12. Details will follow! 😘❤️

Question 7 of 7.

If you participated in #StepfordSummerParty and or #HellOween  buddy reads did you have a favorite book? How did Fight Club compare to the other two books? How did you feel about Palahniuk‘s writing compared to the others? Do you see any similarities between the three books? Would you consider Fight Club horror???

Megabooks I didn‘t do either of those buddy reads, but I have read The Stepford Wives. I think Fight Club is more suspense than horror, but I did find FC scarier! 7mo
BookwormAHN I missed The Stepford Wives, but I really loved The Elementals. I liked the way Palahniuk writes but I didn't think that Fight Club was horror. I think it was more psychological suspense. 7mo
BarbaraBB I agree, FC is much more psychological than horror. I didn‘t do either of the other buddy reads but I will be joining from now on ♥️ 7mo
See All 20 Comments
Librarybelle I‘ve participated in all 3! Stepford Wives was the spookiest for me, I think. The Elementals I didn‘t really enjoy and thought a little campy, though I know I was in the minority on that. Fight Club is more psychological. All three have been fun to read, and I‘m excited to see what the next read will be! 7mo
TrishB I loved The Elementals. Didn‘t do Stepford Wives and bailed on Fight Club. 7mo
peaknit I‘ve participated in all three as well. I enjoyed The Stepford Wives the most I think because the 70‘s were such an odd time. I didn‘t think any of them were particularly scary, but all definitely weird 😊 I‘m with @Librarybelle on The Elementals, campy is a good word. 7mo
Kalalalatja I read The Elementals and enjoyed it way more than FC! 7mo
thereadingowlvina I didn't join The Stepford Wives, loved The Elementals and bailed on Fight Club. I didn't like the writing at all 😔 7mo
DebinHawaii I joined in all three & Stepford Wives was my favorite. All had dark elements mixed with dark humor. I agree that Fight Club was more psychological suspense than horror. I listened to The Elementals on audio which I think enhanced its campiness & made it fun-scary. Fight Club just grossed me out. So for me, I'd rank them in the order we read them. Thanks for hosting @Cinfhen & @BarbaraBB looking forward to another buddy read. 🤗 7mo
CarolynM I wouldn't have read any of them without the buddy reads but I felt that all of them were interesting reads. I think The Stepford Wives was the best of them. It was atmospheric and insightful and I actually cared about the characters. Thanks for the party @Cinfhen and @BarbaraBB 😘😘 7mo
GripLitGrl The stepford wives was my fave the book had a more creepy vibe & diffrent ending to the film. So while i saw the movie the book felt diffrent & kept my interest. Elementals would be my second pick. fight club the book was so-so for me really translated better for me as a film. 7mo
GripLitGrl I Definitely dont see fight club as horror genre. The other two books fit into the horor genre. 7mo
batsy All three are such fascinating books that I probably would have put off for longer if I didn't do the buddy reads, so thank you for that ❤️😁 Stepford and Elementals win out over Fight Club, but I'm glad I read FC; it's definitely a book that disrupts one's perspective! 7mo
erzascarletbookgasm I didn‘t do The Elementals (couldn‘t get a copy on time), SW and FC were great reads though I liked SW better. Wouldn‘t have picked up FC if not for the buddy read. Both are thought provoking and have loads of discussion points. FC is definitely not horror. 7mo
Cinfhen First to my triple hit players @batsy @GripLitGrl @CarolynM @DebinHawaii @peaknit @Librarybelle Thank you for partying with me through the decades! It‘s been super fun and I‘ve found our discussions really insightful. For me, SW was my fav too. The story just worked on all the levels and it‘s withstood the test of time. I too thought Elementals was more of a spoof and campy is the perfect word. It was more atmospheric than scary. Hated FC 7mo
Cinfhen @Megabooks @BookwormAHN @BarbaraBB @TrishB @Kalalalatja @thereadingowlvina See above comments and THANKS for sharing your LOVE of reading with me!!! These buddy reads are only successful because of your participation!! So fun to share music, fashion and books with you all!!! Hope you‘ll be back for #BelowZer00s in Jan 2020😜 7mo
JaclynW @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB I missed the Stepford Wives buddy read 🙁 but I've done the last 2 reads. I liked both The Elementals and Fight Club. I agree with others about Fight Club being more psychological and Elementals more horror (campy, yes). I think Stepford Wives would be more MY kind of book than the other two so I've got to read it someday. I have it, just need to carve out the time. I've read 2 other books from that author and LOVED them both!! 6mo
JaclynW @Cinfhen Count me in for #BelowZer00s ! 6mo
BarbaraBB @JaclynW Yay! You can still nominate a book from the 00s - see @Cinfhen ‘s page! 6mo

CrowCAH Floppy disks 💾!!! 7mo

Mtroiano “Deliver me from my Swedish furniture. Deliver me from my clever art. May I never be complete. May I never be content. May I never be perfect.” I think he realizes he has been trying to buy things and create a persona to try to make himself happy and he‘s just not. That‘s why the destruction is so appealing. He‘s ready to blow up the “fake” self he‘s created and ironically become another “fake” self. 7mo
BarbaraBB @Mtroiano great analysis and quote. It‘s all fake in the end. 7mo
Billypar Agreed @Librarybelle - that idea reminds me of the parts near the end where he finds himself unable to stop what he's created. 7mo
DebinHawaii Excellent quote @Mtroiano I loved my ?too ?and the stack of Readers Digest magazines. Growing up my parents subscribed & all of the "I am Joe's Clenching Bowels" & "I am Joe's xxx" references made me laugh. ? 7mo
batsy Great points @Librarybelle @Mtroiano. I also can't help but think of the Marxist critique of capitalist society, that things rule over people. So we live our lives in service of acquiring more things as the goal; I feel like that's a part of the book's critique and satire on contemporary society. 7mo
erzascarletbookgasm Good analysis @Mtroiano and yes to @batsy ‘s comment. Leads me to think of the concept of minimalist lifestyle which is a good tool in assisting people to find freedom..from worry, depression, trappings from consumer culture..etc. 7mo
Cinfhen Great points!! The whole concept of Project Mayhem was about freeing ourselves from stuff and destroying what most members of society are striving for...owning stuff we don‘t need but want to possess. Like the soap he makes & sells from discarded body fat (that we pay to remove) to purchase expensive soap to keep us looking younger @erzascarletbookgasm @batsy @Mtroiano @Librarybelle @DebinHawaii @Billypar 7mo
JaclynW @Mtroiano Great thoughts! "Stuff" doesn't make you who you are. That's why he felt so empty, incomplete and unhappy. He was chasing the wrong things to build himself. @betsy Yes! I agree. @erzascarletbookgasm Exactly! @Cinfhen The soap making from other people's fat and then those people were paying for the expensive product was quite hilarious! Buying back their fat. ? 6mo
JaclynW @Mtroiano The Swedish furniture bit made me laugh too. Reminds me of my trips to IKEA. 😂 6mo

Question 5 of 7. Of course we need to make the comparison with the movie!

Megabooks I‘ve never seen the movie, but I want that water ring toss!! 7mo
Mtroiano I‘ve never seen the movie but now I want to! 7mo
BookwormAHN I think I actually like the movie better. 7mo
See All 17 Comments
BarbaraBB I saw the movie but forgot all about it. 7mo
Librarybelle I‘ve seen parts of the movie...this makes me want to see it again. 7mo
BarbaraBB @Librarybelle Me too, I can‘t imagine how the twist was visualized in the movie. 7mo
TrishB I hated both 🤷‍♀️ I did the buddy read as thought I might enjoy more than the film! 7mo
britt_brooke It‘s been 20 years or so since I‘ve seen the film and I can‘t remember it at all. I loved the book, but have often heard the movie is better, so I really want to watch it again soon. 7mo
Billypar @britt_brooke I think it's been about as long for me too. I remember really liking the first half of the film and becoming less interested once the Project Mayhem section started. That didn't happen in the book as much, even though I already knew what was going to happen. So I think it's the book for me. 7mo
Kalalalatja I have seen the film, but didn‘t really remember anything other than the twist 🤷‍♀️ 7mo
DebinHawaii I saw parts of the movie, ages ago after it came out & never had the desire to watch the whole thing until reading the book with this group. Now I'd like to to see how they handled everything. I tried to watch it before this discussion, but ran out of time. 7mo
BethM I‘m with @BookwormAHN and thought the movie was better than the Book. The book was difficult for me to get into but the movie completely captivated me. 7mo
GripLitGrl I prefer the film to the book. I saw the film first & so many times it's still great i stop to watch it when it's on. 7mo
erzascarletbookgasm No comment on that as I‘ve never watched. Just want to say I used to own a water toss ring like that! So fun! 7mo
Cinfhen Hahaha @erzascarletbookgasm MY kids loved that game!!! Sooooo fun 😜🙌🏻 7mo
Cinfhen The movie helped me visualize what I wasn‘t understanding/grasping in the novel. It worked much better in that format (for me) but I‘m glad I tried the novel first even though I hated it. Discussing with you guys makes it so much better @Megabooks @Mtroiano @BookwormAHN @Librarybelle @britt_brooke @Billypar @Kalalalatja @DebinHawaii @BethM @GripLitGrl Movie was very violent and chaotic but it was easier to follow the progression & GOOD CLUES 7mo
JaclynW @Megabooks @Mtroiano @BookwormAHN @Librarybelle @britt_brooke @Billypar @Kalalalatja @DebinHawaii @BethM @GripLitGrl @BarbaraBB @TrishB @erzascarletbookgasm @Cinfhen I've seen the movie YEARS ago. I liked (not loved) both. It was quite violent. The book had my head spinning at its craziness. But I liked the WAY it was written. It worked well with the characters and events. I really need to watch the movie again to do an accurate comparison. 6mo

Question 4 of 7. This one needs a spoiler alert. You know what I mean when you‘ve read the book.

BarbaraBB I didn‘t even get it when reading that he never saw Marla and Tyler together. 😊 7mo
batsy I haven't watched the movie so I honestly didn't really see that coming, though a part of me was wondering what was up when Tyler was never around when Marla entered their home (and the narrator pointing out that he recognised this dysfunctional dynamic between his estranged parents, I think...? If I remember correctly 😬) 7mo
BarbaraBB @batsy Neither did I. Him repeating “I used to be such a nice guy” made me thinking and finally getting it. 7mo
See All 19 Comments
Megabooks When Hal Sparks ruined it for me on I 💜 the 90s on VH1. 👎🏻😆 I‘ve never seen the movie, and I‘m jealous that you guys didn‘t know the twist! 7mo
BookwormAHN Originally when I saw the movie, but in the book it became more obvious when Darla and Tyler were never in the same room together. 7mo
BarbaraBB @Megabooks I think that may be why the book was a pick for me, the twist was really good and showed hard how twisted the narrator‘s mind had become. (edited) 7mo
Librarybelle I already knew from seeing the movie! But, I tried to pick up any clues in the book. They were subtle, but I think it‘s a good twist! 7mo
britt_brooke I knew going in that there was a multiple personality involved, but I had no clue how it unfolded. It‘s been ages since I‘ve seen the film and I remembered nothing about it. 7mo
peaknit I had no idea until all of a sudden, it was obvious😂 7mo
Kalalalatja I had seen the movie, so it wasn‘t a big surprise for me. But I was impressive with all the subtle hints throughout the book 7mo
DebinHawaii I only remember seeing part of the movie years and years ago but I had an idea going in from that & discussions about the movie and I kept an eye out for the clues like @Librarybelle I would have rather gone into it without knowing because I agree that it is a good twist. 7mo
Mynameisacolour I've seen the film so already knew but I agree, it was enjoyable discovering hints throughout the book. 7mo
BethM I DNF the book but loved the movie. I remember watching the movie and the big reveal was a complete surprise to me. 7mo
CarolynM I've never seen the film, but I knew from people talking about it that the 2 were 1. Like @Megabooks I envy those of you who read the book without knowing. I don't think I would have worked it out before the reveal 7mo
GripLitGrl I knew from the movie like most of you but felt the book left a subtle hint of it with the Tyler & Marla situation. 7mo
batsy @peaknit Yeah! I felt the same. And I think that's one of the book's strengths in terms of its structure. Something I didn't see coming and when it came it seemed like the most obvious thing of all! 7mo
erzascarletbookgasm I‘ve never watched the film and it was a surprise when revealed..how could I not suspect, with all the hints? 7mo
Cinfhen Having read the book first and NOT knowing the twist I was honestly surprised and it took me a few minutes to process what I read even after I read it. It works on a psychological level but now I‘m wondering if what @CarolynM said is true. Could FC & Project Mayhem also been figments of his imagination @batsy @Megabooks @BookwormAHN @Librarybelle @britt_brooke @peaknit @Kalalalatja @DebinHawaii @BethM @Mynameisacolour otherwise not plausible 7mo
JaclynW I knew from watching the movie years ago. I wish I hadn't known! That twist would have hit me like a ton of bricks I'm sure. Knowing the twist, I was hyper-alert to the clues. You all mentioned those above. This book is a head-trip/mindboggling kind of book for sure! @batsy @Megabooks @BookwormAHN @Librarybelle @britt_brooke @peaknit @Kalalalatja @DebinHawaii @Mynameisacolour @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB @BethM @CarolynM @GripLitGrl @erzascarletbookgasm 6mo

Question 3 of 7

Megabooks Hmmm. I think it has to do with leaving your profession, your relationships , and daily identity at the door. 7mo
BarbaraBB @Megabooks I never thought of it that way. Smart. I was thinking of equality. That those feelings are beyond hiërarchy, race or wealth. 7mo
Mtroiano Was it fight club or project mayhem? Project mayhem was more like an army so that‘s why I was thinking they dressed and groomed the same 7mo
See All 34 Comments
peaknit Being anonymous? 7mo
BookwormAHN I think they originally were doing it to be anonymous but I think there was also some mob mentality going on. 7mo
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I can see your perspective too. 7mo
Librarybelle I think you‘re right, @Mtroiano ...a definite conformity, like an army or a mob, with Project Mayhem. There is also the anonymous idea too, @peaknit and @BookwormAHN ...they burn off their fingerprints to make identity harder to track. 7mo
Leftcoastzen Love the Kipling backpack! 7mo
britt_brooke @Megabooks @peaknit @BookwormAHN I agree, it had to do with anonymity and conformity. It was also about seeing how our narrator could control them. He was seeing how far people would go, I think. 7mo
Megabooks The control is a really good point @britt_brooke 7mo
BarbaraBB @britt_brooke @Megabooks But why did he want to control them? 7mo
Megabooks @BarbaraBB @britt_brooke I think it‘s to gain control over himself. His life was spiraling, and he felt more in control when he was controlling others, even though I think that‘s why his own schism deepened. 7mo
Mtroiano @britt_brooke @megabooks that‘s a good point. I think the desire to control others comes from feeling out of control in his own life 7mo
Mtroiano @Megabooks ha! We posted at the same time. Yes, agreed! 7mo
britt_brooke @BarbaraBB Maybe because he felt so out of control? I think that‘s a big reason why he formed Project Mayhem. Since he was mentally unstable, some of his extreme behavior is difficult to understand. @Megabooks 7mo
DebinHawaii I also thought anonymity & conformity @Mtroiano like a cult or army, not thinking for themselves, blending in. 7mo
britt_brooke @Mtroiano @Megabooks Ha! I posted at the same time, too. 7mo
Megabooks @britt_brooke @Mtroiano Does this mean we have to start dressing alike? 😉😝 7mo
britt_brooke @Megabooks 😆👯‍♀️👯‍♀️ @Mtroiano 7mo
BarbaraBB @DebinHawaii Blending in is a good one, the best way to forget about yourself. 7mo
CarolynM I'm not entirely sure that both fight club and project mayhem weren't just fantasy (or maybe delusion would be a better word) He was doing all sorts of violent stuff, but his followers were as much a product of his own mind as Tyler Durden was. 7mo
Megabooks @CarolynM That‘s a really interesting perspective I didn‘t think about. Now that you say it, it sort of makes sense. 7mo
Cinfhen Hmmmmm @CarolynM is that a possibility??? So much of this book didn‘t make “sense” to me. I agree my initial opinion was that Project Mayhem was Tyler‘s need to control and even in a club where all are meant to be equal, there‘s still a leader and some sort of hierarchy @Megabooks @Mtroiano @britt_brooke @DebinHawaii @BookwormAHN @peaknit I HATED THIS PART. It seemed juvenile and too violent for me. 7mo
BarbaraBB That‘s such an interesting pov, @CarolynM that shines a whole new light on much of the novel cq Project Mayhem. 7mo
CarolynM @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB @Megabooks I'm not saying I'm sure of it, but there is an awful lot of stuff that seems to come out of nowhere and if a major character is illusory, why not a lot of the action? 7mo
Billypar @CarolynM I like that idea- the whole thing does feel like a dark fantasy of a food disordered mind. Would also explain why the building doesn't explode instead of the 'used the wrong explosives' explanation he provides. 7mo
britt_brooke @CarolynM I agree with your theory! 7mo
JaclynW @CarolynM I also wondered if Project Mayhem was fantasy/delusion. It would make the violence easier to take! That part was hard for me too @Cinfhen . 6mo
JaclynW What struck me about the "uniforms" was the conformity. It seemed that part of his "fight" was against just that. He didn't want to be like everyone else. I guess it was control due to the lack of control he felt within himself 6mo
JaclynW ⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️@megabooks @BarbaraBB @Mtroiano @peaknit @BookwormAHN @librarybelle @britt_brooke @DebinHawaii @CarolynM @Cinfhen @billypar (I hit send too soon! My fingers are struggling this morning. 😆) Anyway...I though that was odd. And I had to laugh that his rules came back to bit him. 😯 6mo
JaclynW @Megabooks oops! It didn't link you. ⬆️ 6mo
Megabooks @JaclynW Thanks! What you‘re saying makes sense for both the books and some other leaders, possibly religious fanatics?? 6mo
JaclynW @Megabooks Exactly! Fanatics of any kind really. Political, religious, even things like sports fans (it can be applied everywhere!). There is comfort in numbers I guess. But as with any large group, there needs to be conformity to operate properly/effectively. You lose a lot of individuality this way and probably most importantly, you lose THOUGHT. It is rare for members of "the group" to question authority. 6mo

Question 2 of 7

batsy I think the powerlessness they feel in their daily lives, working meaningless jobs & a lack of control that stems from their economic situation, manifests itself in aggression as a form of reclaiming power. Underneath that there is also a search for a masculine ideal, a sense of brotherhood. As a reader I'm torn between understanding their powerlessness & hating that it manifests in the usual violent hetero-masculinity... 7mo
Megabooks I like your answer @batsy . I think even powerful people sometimes yearn to have a loss of control. Whereas more powerless members can have an equal shot at gaining control over others that they couldn‘t in real life. 7mo
BarbaraBB This is why the book reminds me of Easton Ellis. The complete lack of feeling, of empathy. Meedong blood and pain to feel. But I agree @batsy on the usual hetero- masculinity. 7mo
See All 52 Comments
peaknit Maybe because anger is just so much easier to express than sadness or loneliness? 7mo
BookwormAHN I also agree @batsy but I think that some of their antics were rather childish though. 7mo
BarbaraBB @peaknit Yes I think you‘re right and that it‘s that cliché hetero masculinity 7mo
Librarybelle I like that idea, @peaknit . There is that underlying level of loneliness in the book, but also anger over the “system.” I‘m thinking of the waiters and drivers and officers who join in the fights. And yes, the underlying current of hetero-masculinity. 7mo
Billypar @batsy It's interesting how only the economic aspect is overtly part of Tyler's anarchist philosophy- he never addresses anything about masculinity directly, even though it's an obvious defining feature. It's like they want the brotherhood without any emotional acknowledgement. Before Project Mayhem gave a focus to the destructive forces, maybe the violence was a reaction against feelings of vulnerability as well as powerlessness? 7mo
Billypar @peaknit I definitely agree! And part of the reason they don't talk about it is because talking about why they enjoy it will bring up all those other feelings. 7mo
peaknit @Billypar YES! I work as a probation agent and if I had a dollar for all of the sad people who broke things, hit their partner, got drunk and destructive, I‘d be able to retire. Talking about it is so hard. I‘ve had burly men crying in my office which often only makes them mad all over again, pissed that they cried. 😢 😡 7mo
britt_brooke Sometimes it simply feels good to break shit. Fighting is a different level, but I think it‘s the same idea. 7mo
BarbaraBB @Billypar You are so right. They want to feel pain physically to deny their emotions. It‘s so sad and unfortunately it‘s less fiction than i‘d imagine, according to @peaknit 😳 (edited) 7mo
Kalalalatja This is actually quite a discussion point among psychologist, because a lot of men with depression, doesn‘t show the “normal” symptoms of depression like sadness, rumination, and inward anger. Instead, men are more outward reacting, and turn to violence or drinking or cheating. So there have been discussions whether to change the diagnostic criteria to fit more men into it 7mo
Billypar @peaknit It's so sad, and must be difficult to respond sympathetically when you're dealing with people who perpetrate domestic abuse. But the right response is whatever makes it less likely to reoccur, and it seems like it has to involve promoting an acceptance and even awareness of those feelings. 7mo
DebinHawaii Such great thoughts everyone. In my library e-book there is an afterward by the author where he talks about fight club style groups & how in the mountains of Bolivia where the book isn't published where the poorest people in the village gather to celebrate "Tinku" & beat each other with bare fists chanting , "We are men. We are men. We are men." I found that so interesting. (Is it bad that I liked the afterward more than the book?) ? 7mo
Billypar @Kalalalatja Such an interesting debate in psychology- how to go beyond the external symptoms and look for the underlying cause during diagnosis. It's a huge challenge, but a critical question to address. 7mo
BarbaraBB These are interesting add-on‘s @DebinHawaii and @Kalalalatja 7mo
Kalalalatja @DebinHawaii I think that was the introduction in my edition 😄😄 7mo
CarolynM @britt_brooke Good point. @Kalalalatja That's really interesting and makes intuitive sense to me. 7mo
britt_brooke @DebinHawaii The afterword was fascinating. 7mo
madamereadsalot1 I've read somewhere before that Palahniuk wrote this as a commentary on society & toxic masculinity. He's a gay man who grew up hiding that he was gay & that he wanted the be a writer (It wasn't seen as a smart move for sustainability). Also, I've seen it discussed that the book could be seen as a violent analogy for how we neurotically strive towards "success" by working tirelessly to own things & be seen as something, all to our detriment. 7mo
GripLitGrl It's such a wierd way to let out feelings and aggression. fight club they even enjoy the pain of getting hit themselves wearing bruises like badges of honor. Now there are places that charge you money to go in & break stuff so the urge to destroy has gone from primal to paying money for a service that's sets things up for you to destroy. 7mo
batsy Thanks for that insight @Kalalalatja on gendered modes of expression. "Men get angry, women get sad" —people are obviously so much more complex than that, but that's the narrative and social norm that tends to be enforced. @madamereadsalot1 That's interesting! And how I kind of read it. I've been meaning to look up interviews with the author about the motivations for writing this book. 7mo
batsy @Billypar That's true. The narrator wanting to belong & not having a father figure & seeing his boss as a father was interesting to me: "If you're male, and you're Christian and living in America, your father is your model for God. And sometimes you find your father in your career." That kind of summed up quite a bit of the book for me. And then the reference elsewhere to the prodigal son and the fatted calf. The Freudian in me perked up ? 7mo
Billypar @batsy Yes- the absent father role seems to be key- in the Afterword, Palahniuk said the novel started as a short story that became chapter 6. That chapter is filled with information about the role of fathers, and it includes his boss. Combine that with the killing of his boss and all the castration stuff.... yes, I think Freud would raise an eyebrow ☺️ 7mo
Cinfhen I don‘t have much to add, you guys are making so many fascinating points. I read the premise of FC as an FU to the world but again, it traces back to men having some sort of “intimacy” & physical contact (like with support group) @Billypar @batsy @GripLitGrl @madamereadsalot1 @britt_brooke @DebinHawaii @CarolynM @Kalalalatja @peaknit @Librarybelle @BookwormAHN @Megabooks and their NEED to FEEL 7mo
JaclynW @Billypar Many eyebrow raises from Freud for sure in this book! 6mo
JaclynW @DebinHawaii I didn't have an afterward in my book! That is pretty fascinating. Thanks for sharing! 6mo
JaclynW I shouldn't come so late to the party! You all (again) have said everything that I'd want to say. I appreciate all of your comments. They help me to expand my thoughts on this crazy book. @batsy @megabooks @DebinHawaii @Billypar @peaknit @BarbaraBB @BookwormAHN @britt_brooke @Kalalalatja @griplitgirl @madamereadsalot1 @CarolynM @Cinfhen 6mo
britt_brooke @JaclynW There‘s one near me, too. I don‘t think I‘d ever go, though. 6mo
BarbaraBB @britt_brooke @JaclynW Rage Rooms? I can‘t believe they really exist 😱 6mo
madamereadsalot1 @JaclynW I honestly don't know. The sound of things breaking cause anxiety for me. Balloons popping, loud banging, etc. I don't think I could. But I also think it could be so cathartic and fun. 6mo
BarbaraBB @britt_brooke @JaclynW I started googling, and the first one I come across is situated less than a kilometer from where I live! 6mo
Cinfhen My friend just told me she took her family ( she has 5 kids & her daughter is married ) so 8 of them went to an Axe throwing bar/ restaurant in NYC , it was $39.99 per person for 75 minutes. I‘m sorry but that sounds ridiculous - to throw an axe?!? I must be old @JaclynW @britt_brooke @BarbaraBB @madamereadsalot1 she said it was oddly “therapeutic” and her family was “insanely competitive” about hitting the bullseye. To me it sounds wasteful🤷‍♀️ 6mo
Cinfhen It didn‘t even include any drinks!!!! 6mo
madamereadsalot1 @Cinfhen that is SO ridiculous. Go buy an axe and targets from Academy Sports and Outdoors and do it in your yard. 😆 Much cheaper! 6mo
BarbaraBB @madamereadsalot1 @Cinfhen @JaclynW @britt_brooke It sounds wasteful but to also a bit scary, as if FC is just around the corner and will be reality one day. 6mo
DebinHawaii @Cinfhen There is an axe throwing place opening up here soon. Like you, I don't get the appeal! 6mo
Megabooks @JaclynW I have a punching bag at home. I think I‘ll stick with that! 😉 @Cinfhen is it me or is that a lot of money for 75 minutes entertainment?? 6mo
GripLitGrl @JaclynW my brother went with some friends & loved it. Me personally not something I'd go out of my way to do unless my brother planned a group event that I had to go to . I don't think it would be therapeutic for me as a neat freak broken things just don't sit well with me. 6mo
Cinfhen For a group of 8 people x $40 ~ that‘s over $300 and they threw axes @Megabooks I can think of better ways to spend the $$ and they probably spent another $40 on drinks & food per person...it‘s Manhattan 🙄 (edited) 6mo
Cinfhen Right @madamereadsalot1 @BarbaraBB I worry about people and how they view recreation 6mo
JaclynW @britt_brooke @BarbaraBB @madamereadsalot1 @Cinfhen @DebinHawaii @Megabooks @GripLitGrl Yes, it's true they exist! 😂😜 As crazy as it sounds. I can't believe how expensive they are! I'm with you about there being better ways to spend money. Yardwork is a bit like tearing things apart! That's free! 😂 I'm not certain I'd do it either. I'm such a rule follower and breaking things seems wrong. 😬🤣 But in another was it does sound a bit therapeutic. 6mo
JaclynW @britt_brooke @BarbaraBB @madamereadsalot1 @Cinfhen @DebinHawaii @Megabooks @GripLitGrl Also, I get that emotions of any kind can build up. But. There are better/healthier ways to "lighten the load." Violence tends to walk a fine line. I read an article about the rage rooms and therapists were concerned that it would train people to use violence as an outlet. Funny thing..my friend who is a therapist was the one who told me/wants to go to one.? 6mo
britt_brooke @Cinfhen The axe thing seems to be trendy right now. There‘s a league in Nashville. Can‘t say it‘s something that interests me. It seems like an especially bad idea in a bar setting. 😵 6mo
JaclynW @britt_brooke So true. Alcohol + Weapons = NOT a good idea. 6mo
britt_brooke @JaclynW 😆 I can‘t help but wonder about the insurance involved. 6mo
JaclynW @britt_brooke 😂 No kidding! Nightmarish! 6mo
GripLitGrl @JaclynW you're right everyone has a different outlets. If fight club is a real thing lets just hope it never hits project mayhem level lol😄 6mo
JaclynW @GripLitGrl For sure! 🥺😬😂 6mo

Question 1 of 7!

BarbaraBB Personally I think the book started out extremely strong with the narrator visiting those support groups. To need other people‘s utter despair to be able to feel something himself. 7mo
Billypar Yeah this part was pretty interesting: I thought it tied into a core theme of the novel- how modern life in the first world tends to sanitize not only death and pain, but also the intense feelings that come with them. It's like he became addicted to catharsis from attending the meetings. 7mo
batsy @BarbaraBB @Billypar Spot on; can't add more to your answers 👌🏽 7mo
See All 25 Comments
Megabooks I think we lead such separate lives during modern times, I‘m kind of surprised more people don‘t do this. To closely quote a cis white male character in a favorite book, “I wish I were part of a marginalized group, so I would have a safe space to go to express my feelings.” 7mo
BookwormAHN At first I thought it was weird but then I started to get that that was how he unnumbed himself. 7mo
peaknit @Megabooks that‘s a great point. We should have support groups for more than the afflicted, like “for introverts”, “lonely people”, etc. it seems as though young people have nowhere to meet kindred spirits in my opinion. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 7mo
BarbaraBB @BookwormAHN great expression, “unnumbing himself”. 7mo
Megabooks @peaknit as an introvert who has moved a lot, I‘ve had trouble meeting people when I move. At times, I have wished for a support group! 7mo
Librarybelle Absolutely agree, @BarbaraBB and @Billypar ! 7mo
peaknit @Megabooks right?! I have a 19 year old daughter who is very introverted, like me, and it hurts me to see her isolate because there isn‘t many places to meet other cool and sensitive bookworms. 7mo
DebinHawaii Late to the party but I found it interesting too. He moves along on autopilot, doing his soulless job & feeling numb and the groups are a way to release his feelings by feeding off of others' emotions in a place where he won't be judged. 7mo
Kalalalatja That was the only part of the book I liked! I‘m with you @BookwormAHN it was a way to unnumb himself, but the way it was written, made it seem so ridiculous to me, that I actually laughed, despite the heavy meaning behind it 7mo
Mynameisacolour He says "This is freedom, loosing all hope was freedom." Which I interpreted as the freedom to release the sadness from his empty existence and just be ok with loosing hope for a more meaningful life. Being surrounded by people suffering and hopeless although for different reasons made it possible for him to let go and cry it out. 7mo
BarbaraBB @Mynameisacolour That‘s sad isn‘t it? I found these scenes more powerful than the actual fighting. 7mo
CarolynM @DebinHawaii I think you've nailed it. 7mo
madamereadsalot1 I agree with several of the takes here, but ultimately he seems to be suffering from borderline personality disorder and the only way he can feel is when it's projected from others and he can then replicate it. Maybe that isn't very deep, but it's a logical explanation. 😅 7mo
GripLitGrl Late to the party but great answers from all you.Was a real interesting part of the book meeting were a safe space to be vulnerable around those who are worse off than you. 7mo
erzascarletbookgasm Great comments and I agree with @BookwormAHN 7mo
Cinfhen So many great points here. At first my impressions were like @Kalalalatja I thought attending support groups to feel pain & release his emotions was a joke or a wink & a nod to the “industry” that seems to thrive on other‘s suffering but as the story progressed I realized the author wanted to show that men have a basic need to be vulnerable without being judged and it‘s only when facing death that society seems to embrace them. 7mo
batsy @Cinfhen Great point! I think you're right and it's maybe a bit of both. Kind of a satiric critique of the compassion "industry" but also a need to actually connect with people, which ironically he could only do by being inauthentic. 7mo
JaclynW I'm super late (just finished the book late last night). I think you've all said everything I'd want to say. I too laughed at first like @Kalalalatja but them found it pretty sad and depressing that this was his only way to release these emotions and feel comfort. 6mo
BarbaraBB @JaclynW So nice to have you joining us with your comments! 💕 6mo
JaclynW @BarbaraBB Thanks. 😊 6mo

The novel's philosophy is shot machine gun style, repeating in bursts, over and over again. This creates the feeling of everything else being muted: the characters are more like sketches and even as the plot advances, there's a sameness to the story, despite the revelations. This may sound critical, and I wasn't always on board, but I think it holds together. The narrator may not have much substance but we feel his insomnia and insanity acutely.

Cinfhen Great photo and fantastic review 😄 7mo

Half way through and I can‘t take anymore. I‘m literally snarling at it next to me on the couch. I knew I was onto a loser when it‘s praised by Bret over the top cleverer than me Easton Ellis (I hate his books too).

suzisteffen Honestly he is sooooo beloved in Portland, and it just worries me for humanity. 7mo
TrishB @suzisteffen 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ 7mo
Kalalalatja I‘m with you! 🙅‍♀️ 7mo

Oryx I'm with you on this book and on Ellis. Just nope. 7mo
Aimeesue Reading any of their books just makes me feel queasy in my … morals and ethics I guess. Ick. 7mo
ravenlee Never read either of them, but I used to get hipster types at the bookstore where I worked coming in for Palahniuk‘s books, and the jerks would very carefully spell the name for me. Like they were so much smarter and cooler than I, because that‘s what they read. 7mo
batsy The snarling, I love it 😂😂 I totally get it, though. There is indeed a weird grey moral area with their style and mode of satire or whatever it's called. 7mo
BarbaraBB I totally get it too, even though I liked it myself. I hate Brett Easton Ellis‘s work too! 7mo
TrishB @Kalalalatja @Oryx @Aimeesue @ravenlee @batsy @BarbaraBB as a talking point it‘s winning 👍🏻 7mo
Weaponxgirl 😂 love this, those two authors are ones including Kerouac who if I hear a guy trying to sound cool and original by saying they are some of their favourite authors quickly makes me never want to talk to the person again if I can help it. Mate you aren‘t edgy you‘re just pretentious 7mo
Balibee146 So it turns out I gave my copy away without touching it.... I can't abide Brett Easton Ellis's writing also.... I think I'll give this one a miss.... Sorry buddy readers xx 7mo
TrishB @Weaponxgirl @Balibee146 no loss to your tbr‘s 7mo
Cinfhen Ha!! I missed the bail...hope you‘ll still show up for the party💕💃🕺🏻💋🎉 7mo

Masculine rage & nihilism in response to the absurd, cruel world we've made for ourselves was better addressed by Brett Easton Ellis &, if we go further back, Dostoyevsky ? But I found the rotten heart of the story compelling & true because of the struggle for power, autonomy, & "meaning" in the face of total alienation. Bonkers & satirical, but chillingly prophetic. Palahniuk's staccato prose style isn't really my jam, though. #90sSpringFling

TrishB Just started this morning. Great review 👍🏻 7mo

BarbaraBB Great review, thanks! 7mo
Cinfhen Fantastic review!! I guess I‘m just not that attuned to my inner male rage. 😆 7mo
batsy @TrishB Thank you! Look forward to your thoughts 🙂 7mo
batsy @Tanisha_A Thank you, T and it's a challenging book to recommend; based on reviews as you can see it's hard to tell if it'll be a hit or miss 😁 7mo
batsy @BarbaraBB Thanks! 7mo
batsy @Cinfhen Bahahaha I'm going to have to "detox" with some Trixie Belden tonight ? 7mo
BibliOphelia Great review that really sums up my conflicted feeling re: this book. Also, Trixie Belden forever!! 🤘 7mo
AlaMich Kudos to you for being able to read about male rage when it feels like we are currently drowning in it in IRL. 7mo
batsy @BibliOphelia Thank you! And yes, #Trixie4Life ❤️ 7mo
batsy @AlaMich Yes! That's the chillingly prophetic part about this book. But I also wonder how much of an influence it had (especially the movie, which I now need to watch) as a cultural moment, even if its meant to be read as satire. 7mo
youneverarrived Brilliant review! I‘m starting it later on today. 7mo
batsy @youneverarrived Thank you! Can't wait to hear what you think about it. 7mo
Susannah I‘ve never wanted to read this book (I try to stay away from books that are going to exacerbate my [unfortunately] natural “ugh, men” attitude), but I could read all day about Palahniuk‘s literary lineage. Awesome review! (edited) 7mo
batsy @Susannah Thank you! And I know exactly what you mean. "Ugh, men" is kind of my default state these days ? 7mo
erzascarletbookgasm Brilliantly reviewed! You‘re right about his writing style..annoying! 7mo
batsy @erzascarletbookgasm Thank you! Yeah, if the book was any longer I wouldn't be so forgiving about the style 😆 7mo
merelybookish Excellent review! I just CAN NOT with this author. He's on a list of men I'll never read. Maybe my loss I'm okay with that. 🤓 7mo
batsy @merelybookish Thank you! And yes, I'm at peace with probably never reading another book by Palahniuk again 😆 I don't regret reading this one, but his style is not quite my jam. (I have a list of men, too, and Franzen is on it 😅) 7mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Everyone hits rock bottom. You can improve or self-destruct. An unnamed narrator finds solace in support groups by pretending to have various ailments. Once he meets Tyler Durden, Fight Club becomes his respite. Quickly, Durden‘s dogmatic aphorisms turn the ever-growing Fight Club into another monster altogether. This book is batshit bonkers. Palahniuk‘s tight, vivid prose shapes a dark and uncomfortable satire. Expectations exceeded!

britt_brooke @Megabooks This is my favorite so far, so I‘m not sure what to recommend. I know @vivastory is a fan. Scott, can you give us some Palahniuk recommendations, please? 7mo
vivastory Thanks for the tag @britt_brooke ! Palahniuk can be hit & miss with me, but my favorites are: Lullaby, Survivor & Rant. I also liked Haunted, but am always a bit reluctant to recommend it as there's a couple of really gross stories in it. @Megabooks 7mo

Thank You God for giving me the endurance to NOT bail🙏🏻#UnpopularOpinion I HATED this book. Yes, I GET what Palahniuk is trying to say but the weirdness, violence and grossness of his storytelling left me feeling so squalid. Can ALL this madness be attributed to wretched fathers??? Can‘t wait to discuss next week #90sSpringFling 👊🏽 ok @Reviewsbylola I‘ve amended my rating to reflect my true feelings!!! I‘m no #StarSlut #HatedIt

saresmoore Funnily enough, when asked about his deeper meaning for the book, it turns out that Palahniuk was pretty much just going for a well-structured thriller. The “deeper meaning” becomes much more nuanced and prominent by way of David Fincher‘s film. My husband is bit of a Fight Club fanboy and he also found the book to be flat and gratuitous. 7mo
saresmoore Congrats on finishing, though! 😬 7mo
Cinfhen I bet you‘re right @saresmoore I think it‘s the film that elevated the Fight Club into its “cultish” standing. I‘m going to watch the film over the weekend 7mo

Gina I noticed the writer of American Psycho has a little blurb on the cover. I think that says it all. Also the book was published in 1996 but that cover art is screaming retro 50s... 7mo
Canndor I did like the book but still believe this is a rare case where the movie was better. 7mo
Kalalalatja Okay, I‘m glad to see it doesn‘t improve for everyone 😄😄 7mo
Cinfhen That‘s a good point about Bret Easton Ellis @Gina enough said 😛There are tons of different covers for this book, I chose the one that was the cheapest 😉but it does scream 50s horror!!!! 7mo
M.V Sooooo glad it isn't just me. I think both book and movie are pretty lame, especially considering its' cult status. It's "ok" but it isn't -that- good?! 7mo
Cinfhen THANK YOU @M.V 🙌🏻❣️I was wondering what I was missing!! 7mo
erzascarletbookgasm Good effort for finishing it, though! It‘s alright to hate it! 😄 7mo
BarbaraBB It did remind me of Bret Easton Ellis as well. But I‘m happy Brad Pitt prevented you from rating it a Pan 😂 7mo
TrishB I‘m going to read starting Monday! I need some good books over the weekend. I hate Bret Easton Ellis books so I‘m not especially looking forward to it. Disliked film too..... 7mo
BookwormAHN I'm planning to start it this weekend. I liked the movie, so I am wondering if I'll like the book. 7mo
Megabooks Remind me again why we chose this book? I didn‘t like it either. 7mo
Reviewsbylola One paragraph was all it took for me to bail. And yeah, remind me and @megabooks both. 😆 Lastly, you‘re a #starslut too. That‘s the only excuse I‘ll honor as to why you didn‘t pan tf out of this book. 🤣🤣🤣 7mo
Reviewsbylola HATED=so so, in what world. 😂😂 7mo
Cinfhen Ok @Reviewsbylola I‘m back to being a #StarScrooge 7mo
Cinfhen It was a democracy @Megabooks @Reviewsbylola @KarenUK THE PEOPLE VOTED for this!!! I wanted (edited) 7mo
britt_brooke I‘ve often heard that this is one of those rare occasions where the film is better than the book, but it‘s been ages since I‘ve seen it. Definitely rewatching it soon. 7mo
Reviewsbylola 😆😆😆 thank you, I was very shocked at the rating. This feels right. 7mo
Megabooks @Cinfhen @Reviewsbylola @KarenUK Well, at least it‘s a short book 🤷🏻‍♀️ Short and shitty is better than long and shitty! 🤣🤣🤦🏻‍♀️ Nice bail, Steph!!! 👍🏻👍🏻 7mo
Reviewsbylola You know me, it takes only a slight breeze for me to bail. 😆😆 I‘m not even sure I finished the first paragraph, I was just in no mood to mess around. @Megabooks 7mo
Reviewsbylola It really wouldn‘t take much for the movie to be better than the book. 😆 @britt_brooke 7mo
britt_brooke @Reviewsbylola I really liked the book, so I can‘t join you all in the bashing (although I still love you all). 😝 I know it‘s definitely not for everyone. He‘s really hit or miss with me. His books are very effing strange. 7mo
Reviewsbylola Yeah his books are not for me! @britt_brooke 7mo
Reviewsbylola The only book I‘ve read of his is Choke. I gave it 3 stars. Not great but not bad. @britt_brooke 7mo
britt_brooke @Reviewsbylola I liked Choke, but didn‘t love it. Probably 3 ⭐️ as well. Same with Invisible Monsters. But I hated Diary and Adjustment Day. I‘d pretty much written him off until now. 7mo
BarbaraBB Ah, @britt_brooke that makes two of us 😉, I liked it too. And I hated Diary too (the only book of his I read before). And I also think I voted for it when @cinfhen asked us. So much for democracy 😂 7mo
britt_brooke @BarbaraBB 😆 We‘re not totally alone - @erzascarletbookgasm and @Cathythoughts liked it, too. Definitely in the minority, though! 7mo
Cathythoughts Echoing @erzascarletbookgasm well done finishing this one Cindy ... even though I was a fan I found it difficult to read at times ... 👍🏻♥️ 7mo
peaknit Grossness...good word for a lot of the off sh*t in this book. Im hoping to wrap it up today and I think I‘ll check out the movie. 7mo
TrishB Now I can‘t find mine anywhere! Checked Amazon, purchased and I remember it arriving! .... 7mo
Cinfhen Oh no!!! @TrishB trust me, you don‘t want to own 2 copies!!!! 7mo
TrishB I was guessing I wouldn‘t....will have another check tomorrow when I haven‘t got jet lag fog brain!! 7mo
Suet624 So glad I steered away from this book. 7mo
Cinfhen You can still join our party @Suet624 but the book was a bust (for me) 🙈 7mo
Suet624 Aw, thanks!! 7mo
TrishB Found it 😁😁 7mo
Cinfhen Ha!!! Great...can‘t wait to hear YOUR thoughts @TrishB 7mo

This is REALLY BAD!!! I‘m struggling with this book... discussion is going to be very difficult for someone who may not finish the book 😜 @Cathythoughts @erzascarletbookgasm I might need some cheat sheets 😉I fell asleep listening to the audio and I‘ve been stalled at chapter 8 for over a week. 😫😬 How close is the film to the book? I think that‘s the next step💀

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego The film is very close to the book I thought. Either way it's the kind of story that you need to finish all the way through IMO, as it all comes together in the end. 7mo
BarbaraBB It will make for a nice discussion! I actually kind of liked it... 😳 7mo

saresmoore Film is very close to the book, film is better. 7mo
Cinfhen Great, film it is @saresmoore Do you want to co-host discussion with me @BarbaraBB because I‘m not sure how I‘m gonna do it 🙄😬 7mo
Cinfhen Thanks for the heads up @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I‘m gonna try my best to get to the end!! 7mo
Bklover This. Book. Sucks. 🤮. But I still love YOU. ❤️❤️❤️ 7mo
Cinfhen It really does @Bklover 😂🤣😂😂😂🤣😂 7mo
Cinfhen And so glad to know we‘re still tight 👯‍♀️ @Bklover (edited) 7mo
erzascarletbookgasm I agree it all comes together in the end. Haven‘t watched the film but I heard the ending is different from the book? Have to ask those who have watched. 7mo
Cathythoughts It gets interesting with the unexpected “ twist” at the end ... i didn‘t see movie either , so 🤷🏻‍♀️ 7mo
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen Sure, I‘d like that. Please tell me how I can be of help! 7mo
Cinfhen Yay!!!!! Thanks @BarbaraBB I‘m going to email you later on 😘😘😘😘 7mo
BarbaraBB I send you an email back. We‘ll be fine 😘 7mo

I‘ve never watched the movie adaptation (though I know the actors in it) which can be a good or bad thing. I kept picturing Pitt and Norton while reading the book. I can understand why some consider this a cult classic. It‘s dark, intense, bloodied, exhausting...exhilarating. Kept me interested. The writing style was annoying at first, then I sort of got the hang of it. The near-end and ending are surprising. Plot twist! 👇

erzascarletbookgasm This book worked for me..the plot, the weirdness..🤷‍♀️ The afterword by the author is a nice touch.
#90sspringfling I look forward to the discussion! #buddyread
madamereadsalot1 One of my favs books ever. Palahniuk is such a phenomenal writer. 7mo

Tanisha_A Nice review! 7mo
Pamwurtzler @cinfhen Me too!! I keep pushing it off for some reason. 7mo
Kalalalatja There‘s hope yet, then! 7mo
erzascarletbookgasm @batsy can‘t wait to hear your thoughts! 7mo
erzascarletbookgasm @madamereadsalot1 My first Palahniuk and I‘m impressed. 7mo
erzascarletbookgasm @Kalalalatja @Cinfhen did you guys hibernate it? It gets better after chapter 6 or so (after Fight Club is born). At least on physical book.. 7mo
Kalalalatja I finished chapter 6, and then didn‘t move forward, but I‘ll give it a try again! 7mo

🤔💉😋 In case you were wondering.

I started this for the #90sSpringFling yesterday, and while Palahniuk is totally hit or miss for me, I like it so far. Ed Norton and Brad Pitt are in my head and I‘m not sad about it. 😉

Cathythoughts Yes , that was an interesting piece of info 😬 7mo

I‘ve started #FightClub on Audible... not an easy listen - but compelling - ( my first Time using my little Bluetooth speaker , was getting ear pain from headphones 🎧🤷🏻‍♀️)

So far it‘s a 👍🏻 for Fight Club from me ... mind you I‘m only a few chapters in ...

peaknit I have my library copy ready to go! 7mo
Cathythoughts @peaknit 👍🏻. It‘s a difficult one ... look forward to the discussion 7mo
Kaye I‘m a big fan of Bluetooth speakers. I have one in my car , earbuds with Bluetooth for the gym, and one in the bathroom so I can listen to a book while in the shower. Your ears do get sore if you wear earbuds a lot. Good luck with the book. I haven‘t read it and don‘t know much about it. Wasn‘t there a movie by that name too? 7mo
See All 15 Comments
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled @kaye ☝️listening to a book in the shower. That‘s hardcore! Respect! ✊ Im going to try this! 7mo
Kaye @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Yea, I‘m pretty addicted to audiobooks. I have one playing almost all the time. Showering, driving, cleaning , laundry, the gym, taking walks, grocery shopping ( sometimes) , cooking supper, in the evenings, when I fall asleep...... 🎧 7mo
Cathythoughts @kaye thanks Julie .. this little blue tooth speaker is only the size of a coffee mug ... I‘m delighted with it 👍🏻💙 the book is getting to be tough going. But I‘m half way now 7mo
Cinfhen Alright, looks like I‘m gonna have to go the audio route 7mo
erzascarletbookgasm I must explore this Bluetooth speaker thingy, sounds so convenient! Enjoy! I had a hard time getting into the book (the writing, the style) but past chapter 7, the pages are flipping fast. 👍 7mo
Cathythoughts @Cinfhen the audible is well done 👍🏻 7mo
Cathythoughts @erzascarletbookgasm the little Bluetooth speaker is the business 👍🏻👍🏻 7mo
JazzFeathers I read it many years ago, on a friend's recommendation, and really liked it. It's a very weird story... but it makes a lot of sense . 7mo
Cathythoughts @JazzFeathers yes , I see the making sense part ... works on many levels.. I‘m going deeper with it .. looking to understand what it‘s all about 7mo
BarbaraBB I am happy you like the book as well but I can‘t imagine you like this one and bail on 😉😂 7mo
Cathythoughts @BarbaraBB I think it is important that we respect each other‘s different opinions . ( I didn‘t bail on A Gentleman... ?? ...) As I expresssed to @Cinfhen et al I am getting fond of the gentleman 👍🏻 7mo
BarbaraBB If I offended you I‘m sorry, I didn‘t mean to at all! Maybe it‘s my English? It was just because you said the other day you thought of bailing Gentleman. It‘s a book everyone loved, as opposed to Fight Club, which most people don‘t. I liked them both and I couldn‘t imagine that you would not end up liking Gentleman too. It is of course perfectly fine if you don‘t. Out different opinions make Litsy that colorful! 💜 7mo

At least it was short. I couldn‘t have taken it much longer. However, because it was short it kept me reading on, this weird book about bored adult men looking for kicks, that spins totally out of control when Tyler Durden takes charge. But who is Tyler Durden? (Yeah, Brad Pitt 😍 but I didn‘t mean him!)
I wont recommend this book to anyone but I personally did like the plot and the writing.

merelybookish Well you confirmed my I don't ever need to read this suspicion! 😆 7mo
Cathythoughts I‘m starting soon ... later next week .. I‘m not a Brad Pitt fan at all 🤷🏻‍♀️so that doesn‘t enter into it for me ... but interested to see what the book brings ... 7mo
JaclynW I'm starting this book soon. After reading several people's comments, I'm nervous! Ha! 7mo

Kalalalatja Sorry @JaclynW 😅😅 7mo
erzascarletbookgasm Great review! Yes, I‘m glad it‘s a short book. I‘m a few chapters in, and I get what you mean about the writing, @Kalalalatja 😬 7mo

TrishB @Kalalalatja you may love it 😂❤️ 7mo
LeahBergen I‘m not sure if I‘m going to read this. I read one of his other books for a book club and I wasn‘t the biggest fan. 😆😆 @Cinfhen @TrishB 7mo
BarbaraBB I am definitely gonna give it a try and I loved the movie. That may be partly due to Brad Pitt 😍 7mo
Bklover I will go so far as to remove it from my bookcase and place it on my bedside table. We‘ll see how that goes and I‘ll take it from there! 7mo
EyesOnly34 Good book! 7mo
Mynameisacolour I'm excited to read this one! I really liked the movie and there is no way that this can be as cringy or horrifying as some of his other books..I swear, Haunted gave me flashbacks for a week.😱🤣 7mo
CarolynM Looking forward to it🙂 7mo
Bookzombie I picked up a copy from the library today. I remember liking the movie, but it‘s been a long time since I watched it. 7mo

batsy I'm gonna leave it till the last minute too 😆 It's my first by him and judging from comments I think it's going to be hit or miss! 7mo
Tanisha_A As @BarbaraBB said, I live the movie too, but yeah could be because of Pitt. Had read a short story by him, long time back, think I liked that. Let's see how this goes.🤞 7mo

DebinHawaii I'm going to try! 😘 8mo
DebinHawaii I find this a bit funny... I just went online to my state-wide library system to put this book on hold & there are 9 copies listed. Out of the 9, 4 of them are marked "Lost" & 1 is marked "Claimed Returned"--meaning the borrower says they returned it but the library says they don't have it. What is it with this book?! ?? 8mo

#bookhaul | Picked up a few things at #Parnassus today. Grabbed Fight Club for Cindy‘s #90sSpringFling buddy read next month. I wasn‘t going to buy it, but my husband wants to read it, too. And I bought Gold Fame Citrous before I saw that both @Cinfhen and @Megabooks vehemently panned it. 😆 I‘ve read Moshfegh‘s short stories, but wanted a hard copy.

Fight Club: A Novel | Chuck Palahniuk

Why didn‘t I read this sooner??
A must read if you love Mr. Robot.
Brilliant. Unforgettable. Dare I say “poetic”?

Day 6 #movieadaptation #31bookpics @howjessreads one of my favorite books and adaptations.

InBooksILive Man, one of my absolute favorite movies! I still need to read the book though! 12mo
madamereadsalot1 @InBooksILive it's an amazing book! Palahniuk's writing in it is definitely food for thought, just wrapped in a violent, twisted package! 12mo

I can‘t remember my first Palahniuk. I‘ve read several of his books and have had this one on my shelf for years. Not sure why I didn‘t pick it up before now; maybe because I enjoyed the movie so much?, not like the movie is ever better than the book but I had trepidation that this may be the exception.
Wrong. The movie was great but the book was amazing. Dark, twisted, slightly horrifying.

mcipher Both the book and the movie are so very good! 13mo
Shemac77 @mcipher Agreed! 13mo
