“Tyler says I‘m nowhere near hitting the bottom, yet. And if I don‘t fall all the way, I can‘t be saved.”
In Fight Club, self-destruction is a way to discover the truth of your own heart and to be ‘hitting the bottom‘, you have to lose and sacrifice everything in your life.
It‘s a #harddaysnight for the men of Fight Club and Project Mayhem when they gather together to ‘feel alive‘ before returning to their sleep walking-zombie-like figures at their jobs in the morning.
I realized that although I broke the rules with #90sSpringFling & talked about Fight Club, I didn't review it. A so-so as it's not the book for me--too grossly wacko, but I think Palahniuk shows some demented brilliance in especially the twist. My e-book's afterward about fight clubs in culture was fascinating. I never would have read it except for the #buddyread but now I want to watch the movie full on instead of the parts/pieces I saw before.
Thank you all for participating in #90sSpringFling. It was so much fun to see how we all over the world lived our lives through the 90s, listened to the same music and dressed the same way.
The Fight Club buddy read has really taken the book to new level. @Cinfhen thank you for organizing. I hope you‘ve had a great wedding party tonight. 💕
Next will be a #BelowZer00s buddy read (and party 🎉🎈), January 10-12. Details will follow! 😘❤️
Question 7 of 7.
If you participated in #StepfordSummerParty and or #HellOween buddy reads did you have a favorite book? How did Fight Club compare to the other two books? How did you feel about Palahniuk‘s writing compared to the others? Do you see any similarities between the three books? Would you consider Fight Club horror???
Question 6 of 7.
Question 5 of 7. Of course we need to make the comparison with the movie!
Question 4 of 7. This one needs a spoiler alert. You know what I mean when you‘ve read the book.
Question 3 of 7
Question 2 of 7
Share your thoughts on Fight Club while looking at some 90s icons 😉.
Question 1 of 7!
The novel's philosophy is shot machine gun style, repeating in bursts, over and over again. This creates the feeling of everything else being muted: the characters are more like sketches and even as the plot advances, there's a sameness to the story, despite the revelations. This may sound critical, and I wasn't always on board, but I think it holds together. The narrator may not have much substance but we feel his insomnia and insanity acutely.

Half way through and I can‘t take anymore. I‘m literally snarling at it next to me on the couch. I knew I was onto a loser when it‘s praised by Bret over the top cleverer than me Easton Ellis (I hate his books too).
Masculine rage & nihilism in response to the absurd, cruel world we've made for ourselves was better addressed by Brett Easton Ellis &, if we go further back, Dostoyevsky ? But I found the rotten heart of the story compelling & true because of the struggle for power, autonomy, & "meaning" in the face of total alienation. Bonkers & satirical, but chillingly prophetic. Palahniuk's staccato prose style isn't really my jam, though. #90sSpringFling
Today's lunch & #soupersundays blog post is my version of Mark Bittman's Miso Soup (with tofu, sautéed mushrooms & yaki soba noodles). Easy, vegan & delicious. ??? Recipe link below in comments.
Trying to sneak a few chapters in for #90sSpringFling with @Cinfhen & @BarbaraBB but this is one trippy book. ?Let's see if I can finish by next weekend considering I have 3 books I need to finish & a busy schedule. ?????????
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Everyone hits rock bottom. You can improve or self-destruct. An unnamed narrator finds solace in support groups by pretending to have various ailments. Once he meets Tyler Durden, Fight Club becomes his respite. Quickly, Durden‘s dogmatic aphorisms turn the ever-growing Fight Club into another monster altogether. This book is batshit bonkers. Palahniuk‘s tight, vivid prose shapes a dark and uncomfortable satire. Expectations exceeded!
#BridgeOverTroubledWater | No troubled water here, just Sweet Water (koozie c/o @Callemarie )! Sitting outside, finishing up this book for #90sSpringFling while the boys play and my husband grills. Loving springtime in Tennessee right now! 🍺☀️

Thank You God for giving me the endurance to NOT bail🙏🏻#UnpopularOpinion I HATED this book. Yes, I GET what Palahniuk is trying to say but the weirdness, violence and grossness of his storytelling left me feeling so squalid. Can ALL this madness be attributed to wretched fathers??? Can‘t wait to discuss next week #90sSpringFling 👊🏽 ok @Reviewsbylola I‘ve amended my rating to reflect my true feelings!!! I‘m no #StarSlut #HatedIt
This is REALLY BAD!!! I‘m struggling with this book... discussion is going to be very difficult for someone who may not finish the book 😜 @Cathythoughts @erzascarletbookgasm I might need some cheat sheets 😉I fell asleep listening to the audio and I‘ve been stalled at chapter 8 for over a week. 😫😬 How close is the film to the book? I think that‘s the next step💀
I‘ve never watched the movie adaptation (though I know the actors in it) which can be a good or bad thing. I kept picturing Pitt and Norton while reading the book. I can understand why some consider this a cult classic. It‘s dark, intense, bloodied, exhausting...exhilarating. Kept me interested. The writing style was annoying at first, then I sort of got the hang of it. The near-end and ending are surprising. Plot twist! 👇
I don‘t care, I want to talk about Fight Club! I‘ve finished this and I can‘t wait to hear thoughts from others. I‘m pumped up! #90sSpringFling
Okay, I‘d better not say anymore. Just leaving these quotes here. Review later.
🤔💉😋 In case you were wondering.
I started this for the #90sSpringFling yesterday, and while Palahniuk is totally hit or miss for me, I like it so far. Ed Norton and Brad Pitt are in my head and I‘m not sad about it. 😉
I‘ve started #FightClub on Audible... not an easy listen - but compelling - ( my first Time using my little Bluetooth speaker , was getting ear pain from headphones 🎧🤷🏻♀️)
So far it‘s a 👍🏻 for Fight Club from me ... mind you I‘m only a few chapters in ...
At least it was short. I couldn‘t have taken it much longer. However, because it was short it kept me reading on, this weird book about bored adult men looking for kicks, that spins totally out of control when Tyler Durden takes charge. But who is Tyler Durden? (Yeah, Brad Pitt 😍 but I didn‘t mean him!)
I wont recommend this book to anyone but I personally did like the plot and the writing.

#bookhaul | Picked up a few things at #Parnassus today. Grabbed Fight Club for Cindy‘s #90sSpringFling buddy read next month. I wasn‘t going to buy it, but my husband wants to read it, too. And I bought Gold Fame Citrous before I saw that both @Cinfhen and @Megabooks vehemently panned it. 😆 I‘ve read Moshfegh‘s short stories, but wanted a hard copy.
“We are the middle children of history, raised by television to believe that someday will be millionaires and movie stars and rock stars, but we won‘t. And we‘re just learning this fact… so don‘t fuck with us.”
I just finished this book (again) last night, I love the themes that come up, although sideways and with much offense.
... and my cats, because they missed me, and really needed me to have some reading time with them!
“What you have to consider,” he says, “is the possibility that God doesn‘t like you. Could be, God hates us. This is not the worst thing that could happen.”
We are gods middle children… with no special place in history and no special attention. Unless we get gods attention, we have no hope of damnation or redemption.

I can‘t remember my first Palahniuk. I‘ve read several of his books and have had this one on my shelf for years. Not sure why I didn‘t pick it up before now; maybe because I enjoyed the movie so much?, not like the movie is ever better than the book but I had trepidation that this may be the exception.
Wrong. The movie was great but the book was amazing. Dark, twisted, slightly horrifying.
