Seen my share of
Broken halos
Folded wings that used to fly
They've all gone
Wherever they go
Broken halos that used to shine🎶

Perry, a teenager from Harlem, is drafted into service in Vietnam in 1967. He and his platoon become the ‘fallen angels‘ of which author Myers writes.

OriginalCyn620 Sounds good but also like a tough read. 👌🏻 5y
Eggs The war itself was even tougher - many boys from my high school were sent 😓 5y

Pickpick

This book is an amazing mixture of self reflection as well as a view into how the bonds of combat soldiers are formed to become something truly unique. From the very begining you are on the journey as the main character transitions from civilian to soldier. The story is a gripping tale of the highs and lows of war, the forming of a new found family, and the imprint war makes on a person. Very well written from begining to end!

TheBookAddict I will have to check this one out. I'm not usually into war books, but you made it sound very interesting. I believe the only war book I've read is All Quiet on the Western Front and that was years ago. 7y
TheWhiteHatter @TheBookAddict , I will be interested to bear what you think. War is the backdrop to the story but the real mainstage of the book is the humans involved int the war and how they interact with one another and their own internal struggles. 7y

I teach this each year in my regular junior English class. I had never read it until I started at my current school, but I've always loved Walter Dean Myers. We have a local Vietnam pilot veteran come in to speak to the kids about his experiences and it is the biggest hit of the year. They love it! #workplacebooks #septemberphotochallenge #somethingforsept @RealLifeReading

TheWhiteHatter I first read this book int 6th grade, and it instantly became one of my favorite books. I have read it countless times, and even took it to me when I deployed to Iraq. Aftet not having a copy for years my father-in-law found one and gave it to me for Christmas. The squad perspective and dynamic is gripping and emotional. I am looking foward to reading more by this author. 7y
ErinC @TheWhiteHatter - that's awesome that you love this book! I'm so glad you have a copy again. Thank you for your service! 7y
