Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore
Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore: A Novel | Matthew Sullivan
When a bookshop patron commits suicide, his favorite store clerk must unravel the puzzle he left behind in this fiendishly clever debut novel from an award-winning short story writer. Lydia Smith lives her life hiding in plain sight. A clerk at the Bright Ideas bookstore, she keeps a meticulously crafted existence among her beloved books, eccentric colleagues, and the BookFrogs—the lost and lonely regulars who spend every day marauding the store’s overwhelmed shelves. But when Joey Molina, a young, beguiling BookFrog, kills himself in the bookstore’s upper room, Lydia’s life comes unglued. Always Joey’s favorite bookseller, Lydia has been bequeathed his meager worldly possessions. Trinkets and books; the detritus of a lonely, uncared for man. But when Lydia flips through his books she finds them defaced in ways both disturbing and inexplicable. They reveal the psyche of a young man on the verge of an emotional reckoning. And they seem to contain a hidden message. What did Joey know? And what does it have to do with Lydia? As Lydia untangles the mystery of Joey’s suicide, she unearths a long buried memory from her own violent childhood. Details from that one bloody night begin to circle back. Her distant father returns to the fold, along with an obsessive local cop, and the Hammerman, a murderer who came into Lydia’s life long ago and, as she soon discovers, never completely left. Bedazzling, addictive, and wildly clever, Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore is a heart-pounding mystery that perfectly captures the intellect and eccentricity of the bookstore milieu and will keep you guessing until the very last page.

“‘Joey loved it here,‘ he said. ‘Loved it. This place gave him something sacred. Gave his mind some quiet. This was his Thanksgiving table. His couch-cushion fort. He could get lost in here like nowhere else on earth. I‘m telling you this, Lydia, because in all his life, he‘d never really had that feeling before, not consistently anyway. Not to overstate it, but this store was the closest thing to a home that Joey ever had.‘”

Ugh! From the moment I saw the rectangles cut out of the books, I thought " bet that goes over another book to show the words he wanted you to actully read. And that will be your message." And now the labels on each book point to another book, probably the one to put the rectangles over, I'm even more convinced that's what needs to be done. What kind of slow "puzzle solver" is David, to not jump to this conclusion when he saw it?! David, you suck!

Lydia‘s a bookseller trying to live an uneventful life. One of her customers takes his own life in the store, during her shift. And Lydia is pulled into his mysterious life. Which is ironic, because her own past is actually quite cumbersome also. The characters were well-developed, but the plot just wasn‘t as complex and twisty as I wish it had been.

Finished reading for the #25infive readathon. While it was an interesting concept, the first 50 or so pages were quite slow. Then the clues Joey left could‘ve probably been figured out within 10 minutes. And, I wished more of the mystery/suspenseful part of the book actually occurred in the bookstore.

At last, I have finished. I started during a Litsy Buddy Read and then just utterly failed to finish the book. Not sure why...I found this to be an entertaining story for the most part. The ending felt a little rushed & the interactions/relationship between two of the main characters didn‘t totally work for me. That being said, I think it‘s a good plane, vacation, library checkout read. The puzzle hype is overblown but the story is solid.

I finished this read in a day and solved the mystery! Woot woot. It was an easy one, the kind you could predict. The book is written from a third person perspective. It begins with the death of Joey and later on moves back and forth in time to explain the relation of his death to Lydia. For me, it was a slow paced one but the kind of slow paced read that won‘t lead you to a book slump. A 3.5 for me! Have a happy Sunday bookworms!
