The Little Prince (Illustrated)
The Little Prince (Illustrated) | Antoine de Saint-Exupry
"The Little Prince" (French: "Le Petit Prince"), first published in 1943, is a novella, the most famous work of the French aristocrat, writer, poet, and pioneering aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupry (19001944). The novella is the fourth most-translated book in the world and was voted the best book of the 20th century in France. Translated into more than 250 languages and dialects (as well as Braille), selling nearly two million copies annually with sales totaling over 140 million copies worldwide, it has become one of the best-selling books ever published. After the outbreak of the Second World War Saint-Exupry was exiled to North America. In the midst of personal upheavals and failing health, he produced almost half of the writings for which he would be remembered, including a tender tale of loneliness, friendship, love, and loss, in the form of a young prince fallen to Earth. An earlier memoir by the author had recounted his aviation experiences in the Sahara Desert, and he is thought to have drawn on those same experiences in "The Little Prince". Since its first publication in the United States, the novella has been adapted to numerous art forms and media, including audio recordings, radio plays, live stage, film screen, television, ballet, and operatic works.

Here‘s my first #MiddleGradeMarch book. It is for the prompt “a book older than me.” I listened to the audiobook and I am so glad I did because the narrator was French which was delightful for me to hear. My father taught me a few words in French, then I studied it in school/college. I loved this book! There were so many good lessons. 18 #BookSpin #23 #BFC22 #AClassicAMonth #ChildrensClassic #ReadYourShelf #MGMarchThroughTime #Buzzwordathon

In our French class, we have to make presentations about French culture and of course, I picked a book as the subject for my presentation. Technically, I didn‘t need to read the book but I‘m so thankful that I did because I loved it. The way it was written was wonderful and though I never read this book as a child, it gave me a strange but great sense of nostalgia.

She‘s the one I sheltered under a glass dome, she‘s the one whose caterpillars I killed (except for the two or three for the butterflies). As the little prince continued on his journey, he reflected that all the others - the king, the show-off, the drunkard and the businessman - would look down on this man.

“It would be you,” said the little prince with certainty.
“Correct. One must only ask of a person what he can give.”

I‘ve just finished Joann Sfar‘s new take on The Little Prince. I liked the art very much, and it was certainly very brave of him to redraw the prince, as the original illustrations are so well-loved, but I‘m probably too old and jaded to fully enjoy the story.

It‘s been a long time since I last wept - not cried, but wept - but this book fixed that real quick. It took me half an hour to read the last 10 pages, because of the tears. Literally just sat and sobbed after finishing it. This book needs to be read, because it reminds us what‘s really important in life. So I‘d just like to say thank you, Mr. Saint-Exupery. Your book truly brightened my life. (And broke my heart!)

WJCintron Your review of the book is so relatable. I read this one in school. It was mandatory. I LOVED it, and also cried. I need to re-read it, now that I'm an adult, but because I know I'll cry a LOT, I've been avoiding it. lol
I'm glad you loved it so much. I can't agree more with what you said at the end.

The Little Prince has a strange history (like most classic children‘s books). The author, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, was a French aviator, childless, and (at the time of writing) living under war-time exile. How he managed to write and illustrate such a perennially popular moral allegory, a “spiritual biography”, under those circumstances, I‘ll never know… Full review: https://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/the-little-prince-antoine-de-saint-exupery/

I love this book and rereading the new Folio edition with commentary was a treat. Unfortunately my 1-yr-old decided to color on the cover. 🤦‍♀️

The irony is not lost on me that the book my daughter chose to drawn on is one about child-like innocence and seeing the value in the invisible things you see with your heart, not the physical. Appropriate, no?

I started to translate this in my French class in high school but I didn‘t get very far. Many years after that attempt I have finally read this book (in English). Learning of Saint-Exupery‘s history made the reading even more poignant. This is a lovely gem of a book and I am so glad that I finally got to it. I think I wouldn‘t have appreciated it as much having read it as a teenager as I have now with years of adulthood, love and loss behind me.

wanderinglynn @VeganCleopatra job. I actually accepted the job before the beginning of the year. But I work for the U.S. government & the HR process moves s-l-o-w. For me, it really wasn‘t that bad moving during a pandemic. The Dept of Defense has taken strict measures (much more so than the rest of the U.S.). Plus, it‘s just me. I might have felt different if I had kids. 2y

My little free library finds today. I went into work and in the one building, there are shelves set up for the little free library. I dropped off several books but saw these treasures. I had “Half the Sky” but loaned it to a college professor who loved it so much that I told him to keep it.
