Before there was Lois Lowrys The Giver or M. T. Andersons Feed, there was Robert Cormiers I Am the Cheese, a subversive classic that broke new ground for YA literature. A boys search for his father becomes a desperate journey to unlock a secret past. But the past must not be remembered if the boy is to survive. As he searches for the truth that hovers at the edge of his mind, the boyand readersarrive at a shattering conclusion. An absorbing, even brilliant job. The book is assembled in mosaic fashion: a tiny chip here, a chip there. . . . Everything is related to something else; everything builds and builds to a fearsome climax. . . . [Cormier] has the knack of making horror out of the ordinary, as the masters of suspense know how to do.The New York Times Book Review A horrifying tale of government corruption, espionage, and counter espionage told by an innocent young victim. . . . The buildup of suspense is terrific.School Library Journal, starred review An ALA Notable Childrens Book A School Library Journal Best Book of the Year A Horn Book Fanfare A Library of Congress Childrens Book of the Year A Colorado Blue Spruce Young Adult Book Award Nominee From the Trade Paperback edition.

LiterRohde This song is so much creepier after reading this book. I also recommend The Chocolate War. 4y

Somewhat of a psychological thriller, this story builds suspense by alternating between two cleverly connected story lines that gradually unfold. Bit by bit pieces of the puzzle come together and you think you understand, but do you really? The story builds suspense while creating an element of dread and the ending will leave you dumbfounded.

Ambiguous and dark, I found this page turner to be a remarkable piece of literature.

I‘m just about half way through The Flight Attendant and I‘m getting a very ‘I Am The Cheese‘ vibe 🧐

It still doesn't stop me from wanting to sit in a park or on a bench one day and watch people pass and randomly make up stories for them.

Whoa! That ending! I was not expecting this book to be as good as it was. I loved the narration. I was on the edge of my seat the whole way through. This was the first book by Cormier that I‘ve read and I will definitely be reading more.

CatLass007 I read this for a college assignment some odd years ago… I love this book 6y

This was between my adolescence and that of my children, but I think of it as a #cultclassic. #noteworthyNovember @Jess7

I Am The Cheese is the first book I read with an unreliable narrator when I was a kid and it blew my mind. I thought all narrators had to tell me the truth before this book! #unreliablenarrator #maybookflowers

VoraciousReader Shutter Island was like that for me. Not my first but it blew my mind! Look forward to trying it, thanks! 7y
FairyHighRoad @VoraciousReader oh yeah, Shutter Island did that to me too! 7y
VoraciousReader It makes for a bit of wild ride regardless of genre. 😊 7y
