"The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," by L. Frank Baum, is part of the "Barnes & Noble Classics"""series, which offers quality editions at affordable prices to the student and the general reader, including new scholarship, thoughtful design, and pages of carefully crafted extras. Here are some of the remarkable features of "Barnes & Noble Classics" New introductions commissioned from today's top writers and scholars Biographies of the authors Chronologies of contemporary historical, biographical, and cultural events Footnotes and endnotes Selective discussions of imitations, parodies, poems, books, plays, paintings, operas, statuary, and films inspired by the work Comments by other famous authors Study questions to challenge the reader's viewpoints and expectations Bibliographies for further reading Indices & Glossaries, when appropriateAll editions are beautifully designed and are printed to superior specifications; some include illustrations of historical interest. "Barnes & Noble Classics "pulls together a constellation of influences biographical, historical, and literary to enrich each reader's understanding of these enduring works.Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, the Cowardly Lion they re now as beloved a part of American folklore as Johnny Appleseed and Paul Bunyan. Since its first publication in 1900, L. Frank Baum s story of a little girl carried away by a tornado to the strange and beautiful Land of Oz has had an extraordinary emotional impact on wide-eyed readers young and old. As Dorothy journeys down the yellow brick road to the Emerald City, hoping the Great and Terrible Wizard who lives there will help her return home, she shares adventures with the famous trio of characters, defeats a wicked witch, and learns about the power of friendship, loyalty, and self-confidence. While scholars have debated for decades over possible political meanings hidden within the tale, Baum himself claimed he simply wanted to write a modernized fairy tale, in which the wonderment and joy are retained and the heartaches and nightmares are left out. As it has done for generations past, this classic of fantasy adventure speaks movingly about what every child needs: the Woodman s compassion, the Lion s courage, and the Scarecrow s wisdom. With original illustrations by William Wallace Denslow.J. T. Barbarese teaches at Rutgers University in Camden, New Jersey, where he is a member of the Rutgers Center for Children and Childhood Studies. He is the author of four books of poetry and a translation of Euripides."

I wasn‘t expecting movie Oz but I was expecting more from the story. I always thought the book was supposed to be more violent and I was wrong. It was much shorter than I expected as well. It was a good book and ticks another classic off the list.

Lova I thought the same thing when I read it to my daughter. 3d

This TL novel is another classic (obviously) that you NEED to read if you have only ever watched the film. I said this novel would be great for a LC. https://homeschoolgiveaways.com/2016/01/the-wizard-of-oz-free-resources-and-prin... is a great resource that could aid teachers and students while reading this graphic novel together.

kennedimartin A teacher could use ESOL principles 9 and 10 when reading this book to show proper note taking / annotating strategies as well as model the correct way to do a LC. UDL 3.1 principle could be used by asking the students who had ever watched the film before. #lae3414sp19 3mo
MNelson98 This is definitely a classic. I like the website you provided. It contains a lot of really good resources and activities that I know students will love. Great post! 3mo

I love how fantastical it is for the time. It did seem a bit abrupt in places. I would have loved more story. I guess that‘s why more books came later.

Just one of the differences between the movie and the book (where they are not sisters). But I still love this movie. It was an annual TV event in my house when I was a kid.

Another iBook freebie! I had never read The Wizard of Oz so this was a ton of fun. Loved the introduction on this audio that gave you a bit of insight into the story. The ruby slippers weren‘t actually red but silver?? Oh how movies change the dynamics of a story. 4 👠👠👠👠 for this one!

I am in love with this copy of The Wizard of Oz. 😍

I chose this one for the Pop Sugar challenge of what makes you nostalgic. I think my mom may have read this to me when I was really little. I know for a fact though that I wore out our VHS copy of this movie because I watched it on repeat. ❤

Buechersuechtling
Der Zauberer von Oz | L. Frank Baum

@MinDea mentioned this to be a series. A series❓🤔 A book ✅, a film ✅, a musical ✅.

But a book series❓🤔 Yepp.
👉🏼 🇩🇪 https://www.buechertreff.de/buchreihe/12452-der-zauberer-von-oz-the-wizard-of-oz...

Translated to German are (only) the books 1-7.

I mean even if every volume is translated I would be reluctant to read them … But why do publishers do this❓ Stop publication/translation in the middle of nowhere❓😠

MinDea Yes! It is a book series. I think there are 13 or 15 books in the series. I have never read the books, but have seen the movie, the musical, the play and the TV series! I hope the rest get translated! 7mo
ju.ca.no Wow, I did not know this😳 and I hate when publishers do this!! (edited) 7mo
Buechersuechtling @ju.ca.no Well, me neither until MinDea mentioned it. Call me naive but this is a classic, so why do you do this❓ It‘s not any random Young-Adult-New-Adult-Twilight-girl-romance stuff of which you can understand when readers and literary scene are fed-up with. Shouldn‘t the whole series be seen as a classic together with the appropriate obligation(s)❓🤔 7mo
ju.ca.no @Buechersuechtling I think so too... but I guess lots of people don‘t even know it is a series so maybe they didn‘t sell enough😭 7mo
ju.ca.no @MinDea I found one Kindle book on Amazon that said „all 24 books in the series“😱 7mo

Finally read this children‘s classic. It‘s a rare situation where I prefer the movie to the book. Perhaps it‘s because I am a child of the 70s and 80s and grew up watching The Wizard of Oz once a year when it was broadcast on TV, back in the days before cable, Netflix, DVDs, etc. It was always a big event when The Wizard of Oz was on! The movie just has a certain magic. Also, what‘s with the creepy hammer heads in the book? Those are not right!!

TheWordJar I lived for when the Wizard of Oz would be on TV that ONE night a year! 💚 But then I always hid my eyes when the wicked witch and her monkeys came on! 😱 7mo

Book-adjacent.

Why? Oh why is this the only French-language version of the Wizard of Oz available on *any* of the services I have access to? Why? How can I teach my son about the good things in life when *that* abomination is all I got! This is so wrong! Also, Glinda's voice in French? So wrong. The wrongest.
