Picture of Dorian Gray
Picture of Dorian Gray | Oscar Wilde
This Prestwick House Literary Touchstone Edition? includes a glossary and reader?s notes to help the modern reader contend with Wilde?s many allusions and his complex approach to the human condition.Oscar Wilde?s only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, first appeared in 1891. Dorian Gray, a handsome young man, falls in with a group of ?friends,? whose amoral philosophies he finds quite appealing. After he has his portrait painted, his frivolity and general demeanor degenerate into wickedness, but only the portrait bears the effects of his descent into decadence and serves as a powerful symbol of Gray?s internal ruin. Dorian himself, however, remains as young and unspoiled as the day he first sat for the painting. Wilde?s exploration of life without limits or consequences shocked its late-Victorian audience and remains highly un-settling to modern readers. We, like Dorian, are forced to reconsider whether total freedom and absolute knowledge are really worth their costs.

#SinisterArt Day 12
I first encountered Ivan Albright's paintings years ago during a visit to the Chicago Art Institute. One of the paintings I saw was his textured, unforgettable take on Wilde's novel. There is a link to the Art Institute site below, if you would like a better look of this mesmerizing & thoroughly unsettling work:

Hey #LMPBC #GroupV - Just checking in as I haven't heard anything in a while!! I haven't received a book from @jimfields3 yet and thought I would make sure that it hasn't gone astray!! I know that @Fredthemoose received the tagged book, but wasn't sure where all the rest were in the process 😂 @BeckyWiththeGoodBooks

fredthemoose I sent Slaughterhouse Five off to Becky a week or so ago and got through Dorian Gray faster than expected so will get that out soon as well. 4mo
jimfields3 I‘m behind but will send out Scarlet Pimpernel in the next few days. Sorry! 😬 4mo
BeckyWithTheGoodBooks I‘m behind as well! I‘m sorry! I will send out the The Bell Jar in the next few days. 4mo

TheAromaofBooks @fredthemoose - Thank you for the update!!! @jimfields3 @BeckyWithTheGoodBooks - No worries, I just mostly wanted to make sure no books were lost in transit, which has definitely happened to me with #LMPBC books before!!! 4mo
BeckyWithTheGoodBooks @fredthemoose @jimfields3 @TheAromaofBooks I am so sorry, friends, but I have Covid (for the second time), and am in insolation through Sunday. I will plan to mail The Bell Jar on Monday as long as I‘m feeling better. 😞 4mo

August #bookspin done!! I‘m a month behind but I‘m determined to catch up!! #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks Oooo I love your edition! I just read this one last month and I'm still thinking about it lol 4mo
BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks the cover is pretty and it‘s got nice big words lol but I‘m pretty sure it‘s the abridged version although the listing on Amazon didn‘t say it was 🤷🏻‍♀️ it was really good! 4mo
TheAromaofBooks The edition I read was saying that Wilde originally published the story as a serial, then when it was published as a full book he actually did a lot of editing and added multiple chapters. So maybe your version is the original instead of Wilde's updated version?? 4mo

This is a classic- some of it is a bit hard to take with the modern palette, but the story still holds while the philosophies still give one pause to think even now.

1. Apparently I don‘t gravitate towards anti-hero books, because I had to google some lists to find ones I‘d read.
2. Tagged book is very good. The anti-hero is definitely not heroic.

GatheringBooks Reread this with my daughter fairly recently and was shocked at how misogynistic it actually is! I loved this in my early 20s but reading it with my daughter (who loathed it by the way) has made me perceive this novel quite differently. We ended up abandoning it. 😭😭😭 9mo
vivastory @GatheringBooks Interesting. I read it a long time ago as well. I have vivid memories associated with it as I was traveling through New England & had picked up a copy while visiting Salem, MA. I really haven't read any Wilde the past few years aside from his aphorisms which I still love 9mo

Wow... This book is truly amazing, and I absolutely loved it! I have to say, it‘s one of the best I‘ve read this year! This book had me so engrossed, I didn‘t even want to stop and post quotes, so I ended up taking pictures, and posting them all at once. I don‘t think that my words will do justice to the awe it has created so I‘ll leave it at, ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

This is probably one of my favorite classics, and I mean I CANT with this edition. My love language is buying me beautiful books.

“There is no doubt that genius lasts longer than beauty. That accounts for the fact that we all take such pains to over-educate ourselves. In the wild struggle for existence, we want to have something that endures, and so we fill our minds with rubbish and facts, in the silly hope of keeping our place.”

this book is absolutely beautiful captivating of the futility of youth and effect of vanity. The ending was horrifying but lured you in at the same time. The slow deterioration of the main character occurs right in front of your the readers eyes developing a sense of familiarity with the characters that can resonate on a personal level with most people. The Temptation and obsessiveness conveyed by Wilde is terrifying and magnificent.

The picture of Dorian Gray is indeed a great novel, the themes explored in this book like shallowness, corrupted humans, narcissism, and how evil a human being can get just to satisfy their desires are extremely interesting and, although this book was written in the 19 century it can still be applied to our current society.

I loved this book!!! Stirred up many interesting thoughts, was very provoking, and also entertaining—even funny at times. Oscar Wilde was such a talent.
