205 posts | 627 read | 4 reading | 52 to read
Willy Wonka's famous chocolate factory is opening at last! But only five lucky children will be allowed inside. And the winners are: Augustus Gloop, an enormously fat boy whose hobby is eating; Veruca Salt, a spoiled-rotten brat whose parents are wrapped around her little finger; Violet Beauregarde, a dim-witted gum-chewer with the fastest jaws around; Mike Teavee, a toy pistol-toting gangster-in-training who is obsessed with television; and Charlie Bucket, Our Hero, a boy who is honest and kind, brave and true, and good and ready for the wildest time of his life!

Day 6 - #uniquecharacternames #literaryluck #verucasalt

Veruca Salt is a character from Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, both films, and theatrical adaptations. She is usually the second Golden Ticket winner (acquired through her father's factory workers), and the third child among the five (originally seven) children to meet her endgame in the factory. Veruca is portrayed as a cute and pretty little girl, but the epitome of a spoiled brat.

Chrissyreadit And the name of a cool alternative rock band named after that character! 3mo

Litsy, I read the book & it was delightful. Adult me really enjoyed the book & I‘m sure kid me would have been head over heels in love with it. I mean, first of all there‘s candy—lots & lots of candy. Then, there‘s Charlie Bucket, a wonderful character easy to cheer for. And, there are the spoiled kids who get EXACTLY what they deserve. The book—imaginative, full of wonder & humor—is, as is always the case, even better than the movies. A fun read.

Reread (for the first time since kids were tiny) spurred by a recent business management conversation I had with my DH. Wish I could remember the aha moment.

I listened to a fun audio version this time. This hardcover is the one I've owned since I was little.

Bookwomble I love the illustration you've posted, and had to track down the artist, who I found to be Joseph Schindelman. I've not heard of him before, and do like his work. This seems an interesting article about Charlie turning 50, with lots of Schindelman pictures:https://tygertale.com/2014/03/27/charlie-and-the-chocolate-factory-illustrated-by-joseph-schindelman/ 4mo

It‘s a day off for me & I decided to spend a little time reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory—because while I‘ve seen the movie adaptations, I don‘t think I have ever read the book. I started reading & of course came across something that made me want to know more & while investigating, I came across this which I somehow missed. Can‘t wait to see what Netflix does! Hopefully it‘s awesome!!!

This makes me so happy! Go NZ. What a great idea. When I was little we had the summer Pizza Hut reading program that let you earn free pizza. I read more books those summers than any other. ❤️🍕

BarbaraJean This is fantastic! 5mo
LiterRohde I‘m so pessimistic. My first thought was that it‘s still a good idea but that here in America it would get kids to eat less fast food. I know. I‘m horrible. 5mo
Whimsical.Curiosity @LiterRohde haha not horrible, realistic. I'm just hopeful that by teaching kids that books are treats that maybe they'll read more. 5mo

LiterRohde I‘m just a frustrated 9th grade reading teacher. Maybe part of the key would be to get them early when they still eat Happy Meals. 5mo
julesG We had books in the HM a few times here in Germany. Made my kids crave fast food. 😉 5mo
EH2018 I was always so excited to earn that free pan pizza! 5mo
Whimsical.Curiosity @LiterRohde whew good luck! I hated reading at that age. 5mo
Whimsical.Curiosity @julesG I mean, fast food is delicious haha but what a bonus to get a book too! 5mo
Whimsical.Curiosity @EH2018 right?! It was the best! 5mo
julesG We go to McD maybe once a year, so it's always something special for my kids. 5mo
Whimsical.Curiosity @julesG yeah my Mom only got it for me when I was sick as a special treat. It's still the only thing I want when I'm sick as an adult. 5mo
SleepyDragon They still have a reading program at Pizza Hut during the school year if the teacher signs the class up. Jack in the Box *used to* have puzzles and mini National Geographic Kids books in their kids meals occasionally, but then they stopped putting any treat in with their kids meals, so we stopped buying them. 5mo
WhatThePuck It's what we get after doctors appointments too. The hubs just started eating McD's again after a 12 year hiatus. He watched super size me and lost his appetite. So it used to be a treat for me and the kids since we only got it when he wasn't around. It's still what we want when we don't feel good either. I've had a head cold all week and I've eaten breakfast there every day this week. 😂 5mo
EclecticBookLover Book It! I still have my pin somewhere!!!! 😁 5mo
Whimsical.Curiosity @NeesyBeth that's awesome they still do it!! I'm half tempted to look kinda it myself 🤣🤣 5mo
Whimsical.Curiosity @WhatThePuck that movie was awful but it didn't phase me lol. That's funny we both want it when we're sick ❤️ there's just something comforting about it. Aside from the fact it's delicious. And they have the best Coke ever. 5mo
WhatThePuck @Whimsical.Curiosity milk shakes were a big thing for when we were sick. Emmalea and I have strep a lot. Now poor Jacob can't have milk shakes so I have to run by Speedway too for a slushy. 😂😂 5mo
WhatThePuck The show also didn't phase me. I might have even ate McDonald's while watching it. 5mo
Whimsical.Curiosity @WhatThePuck slushies are a solid substitute. 5mo
Whimsical.Curiosity @WhatThePuck bwhahaha I can see you doing that. And all this talk has me wanting McDonald's! 5mo
WhatThePuck I had it for breakfast tonight. My mom just invited me to Frisch's. Who am I to say no? 5mo
Whimsical.Curiosity @WhatThePuck Frisch's!! We go there got breakfast buffet every time I'm home. Those French toast stix are the bomb. 5mo
WhatThePuck We had to quit going for breakfast when Andy went on medical leave. We couldn't afford the breakfast buffet for 4 people. 😂😂😂😂 5mo
Whimsical.Curiosity @WhatThePuck it's expensive! And the staff give no Fs. It's the only place my Dad will go for breakfast though lol. He lives right back in that neighborhood off Taylorsville road. 5mo

Taking a Sunday morning break after Journey to the Center of the Earth. I can‘t remember if my second grade teacher read this to in class. I know he read James and the Giant Peach to us. Fun to reminisce and try to recapture the joy of reading as a child. I wish I could go back in time just for that. Not all the other nonsense like high school! 😖 Thought I‘d pose it with some other faves. Although I was in my late 20s when HP was published!

[#BookReview] Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. I decided to pick this one up because I liked the movie when I was little but I realized I hadn‘t read the book. I really disliked the tone of the book as a whole and didn‘t like the messages being preached especially to kids. It just wasn‘t for me, unfortunately. 🍫📖

I had to write about this book by Roald Dahl and illustrated by Quentin Blake because it holds a special place in my heart. Before 6th grade, we had to choose a book we read over summer vacation and do a project on it. I chose to do a scene from this book presented in a shoe box. I didn‘t know how I was going to do it so my Uncle came over and helped me. I wish I had a picture but I didn‘t own a phone, but we made an amazing display all made

AmyPerezCubas Out of candy. We made the water, grass, and everything made out of just candy nothing else. My project was covered with ants at the end of the school day but it was totally worth it! 11mo
