Bleak House
Bleak House | Charles Dickens
The law courts prevailing over the case of Jarndyce & Jarndyce are overwhelming in their pedantic, futile red-tape bureaucratic adherence to old principles and are partly based on Dickens' time as a young law clerk. With a massive cast of characters--many with ingeniously comic names--and his most complex plot, Bleak House is believed by many to be Dickens' greatest work. This is a free digital copy of a book that has been carefully scanned by Google as part of a project to make the world's books discoverable online. To make this print edition available as an ebook, we have extracted the text using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology and submitted it to a review process to ensure its accuracy and legibility across different screen sizes and devices. I have decided to pick up the book that‘s sat on my TBR the *longest.* Close to 15 years now. Yes, time to revisit this massive thing! The first Dickens I ever picked up (and never finished). I got 1/3 of the way through it when I was 17… I took it everywhere with me… everywhere… it was a delight, thick with atmosphere, as Dickens always is… I guess the commitment was just too much. 😳 The wait is over!

Ruthiella I hope you enjoy it this second time‘round (and make it to the end!) 😃 2mo

Going on year 2 of working my way through this beast of a novel (I will finish eventually!!). It is rumored the titular “Bleak House” Chesney Wold is haunted.

High school is a great place to kill one's love for good literature, and I graduated thinking I will never read anything by Dickens ever again.
Well, it's been 16 years since high school, plenty of time to prove many of my other take aways wrong. Turns out Dickens was no exception. This book is a beast and I had a hard time putting it down! The narrative was so captivating! The wit and satire are both hilarious and illuminating. Highly recommend

#Two4Tuesday

1. Usually 3-5 and that can be for an overnight trip or a longer one. I definitely fall in the “never too many books” camp. (Tagged book is the first I‘ve selected for a trip I‘m taking this summer—I also do that, start planning which books to take very early 😬)

2. Yes, the 3-5 number is the number of physical books. I always have more on my iPad so that whatever my mood, there is something to read

1. Yes. I love reading classics. Some favorites include The Monk, Melmoth the Wanderer, The Mysteries of Uldolpho, North and South, Lady Audley‘s Secret, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, Wieland, and, of course, Pride & Prejudice.

2. The tagged book because while I sort of think I‘ve read it, I don‘t remember anything about it at all.

A gift from my wife for my Birthday! And what a great gift indeed! ❤️

282Mikado I have been thinking, it is interesting that she should have bought you this book now. The case of Jarndyce vs. Jarndyce may be eerily apropos for your current situation. Perhaps you should elevate this in your “to be read“, and I may need to add it to my “to be reread“. 1y
Pip2 Wow! I never put two and two together! Many interwoven circumstances have been prevalent in the last couple years with no explanation other than pure coincidence. Maybe we could do this read together. And compare notes on the book and the similar circumstances that surround it. (edited) 1y

#FallTreasures #Day3 #Over500Pages

Two in-progress books that‘s are over 500 pages. I started Doctor Zhivago during lockdown in 2020; it was supposed to be a buddy read with my bf and roommate but they both gave up, and I started to wane about 30% into the book; I am still planning on finishing it eventually. I started Bleak House earlier this year; after an initial burst of reading, I have taken breaks and come back for a little bit at a time.

Pip2 I‘ve read Zhivago 20 years ago, wow time flys! I have not yet read Bleak House but it is in my to be read and currently collecting dust on my shelf. What do you think about it? Are you enjoying it? Currently I‘m reading Little Dorrit. Love this book. Dickens is a true master at his craft, he really makes the scene and characters come alive in this book! (edited) 1y

I have a hard time rating this book because it feels like two books. The third-person narrative section of the novel is slow, boring, too long. But Esther's first-person narrative is full of bonkers soap-opera melodrama, and I was into it. Oh and also, the way that one person died was a real wtf moment, so that was a bonus. What a crazy, weird book.

Wow! Why did I ever resist reading Charles Dickens, in particular, this extraordinary novel? I consumed this book! My dad would be so pleased. I adore Esther. She is the star of this book, but there are so many enjoyable characters. The satire is not lost on me, but I liked Esther‘s narrative best. So much happens, you just need to read it for yourself to find out. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

By chapter 40 we are aware of the threat Tulkinghorn poses to Lady Dedlock. Is he motivated by loyalty or something else? What did you think of Tulkinghorn and his demise?

Lcsmcat I think Tulkinghorn is motivated by personal power. Having something on Lady D that he could use later, when it would benefit him. 2y
BookwormAHN I wonder if that old saying "power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely" fits him perfectly. 2y
quietjenn I do think that there some twisted loyalty. I do think he wants to protect the family/Dedlock name. But if in doing so, he has power over Lady D. - who rivals him in influence - so much the better. In any case, not too sorry about his demise 🤷‍♀️ 2y
Butterfinger I honestly thought he was being loyal to Dedlock. He had a weird sense of it. Assuring Lady that he would let her know first. Why would anyone think that is a good idea or even gentlemenly? 2y

Charity and philanthropy feature in the novel both as something positive and not so. Dickens seems particularly critical of certain forms of charity. Why? #whattheDickens

Lucy_Anywhere I think Dickens is very critical of hypocrisy and those that ‘do good‘ only to look good to others. He‘s particularly cutting about ‘philanthropists‘ who are so busy writing letters and handing out pamphlets that they actually do no good at all 😂 2y
Lcsmcat I think Dickens is also critical of those whose charity is all for those far off, while ignoring (or actually contributing to) the problems and inequities right in their own society. 2y
See All 6 Comments
BookwormAHN I also think he's critical of how the poor are helped and differences between actually helping them and just lording over them. 2y
quietjenn Adding with these observations, I'd just add those who are so caught up in "doing good" that they neglect everything else in their life AND actually do no good at all because it's all performative. 2y
Butterfinger I agree with everything that has been said. That Jellyby woman was written as a caricature. She was foolish. But, then you have Jarndyce offer his home to Esther and the cop's children (forgive me, I know he wasn't a cop, but my brain is not working and I can't think of the family name). You know, as a reader, that his friends are becoming dependent on him. 2y

#whattheDickens There were many characters both main and side in this novel. Did you have favorites? Who did you like/admire? Was Esther the perfect “Victorian” woman? Who did you dislike? Why?

BookwormAHN I liked Esther but she could be a little too good at times. The Bagnets were extremely entertaining. 2y
Cuilin @BookwormAHN the Bagnets were some of my favorites too. I loved how he would ask his wife to tell everyone how he felt. 2y
See All 8 Comments
DarkMina @Cuilin That was too funny! I really liked the Bagnets too! 2y
Butterfinger I loved Mr. Jarndyce. He had nothing to gain for helping people. He was just a kind soul who Richard thought he could manipulate. I also liked how the Bagnets were kind and helped Me George get money for his shooting range. The Smallweeds, especially the grandfather was detestable to me. I loved Esther. She didn't change. Even when she was sick she put others ahead of herself. And Guppy's immature fickleness didn't daze her. 2y
Lcsmcat Mr. Jarndyce and Esther were both just a little too good, but lovable anyway. But Charley and Jo were favorites. Lady Dreadlock too pulled on my heart strings. She was in such a tough position. 2y
quietjenn I agree with much has been said. The Bagnets were great and the Smallweeds the worst. I did find Esther a little too perfect at times, but adored Jarndyce and really felt for Lady Dedlock. Really disliked Richard, but so keen on all the minor characters. 2y
Lucy_Anywhere I liked Esther but I did find her goodness a little annoying, especially as she kept putting herself down in comparison to others. Dickens was so good at creating characters - even the minor characters like the Snagsbys felt like real people! 2y

First 5 star 🌟 read of the year. I loved this book. Dickens wrote it as an indictment of the English legal system and I loved the sarcasm and ridiculousness of it. My favorite characters were probably Mr & Mrs Bagnet. They were extremely entertaining. I'm really looking forward to the discussion 😺

This book has everything. The writing, the characters, the drama, the satire, the mystery, oh and words, lots and lots of words, but when it‘s Dickens doling them out, I say bring ‘em! Gimme more! 😊 I only wish Esther had more agency and was a little less ‘good‘ but her central role in the novel told from a first person narrative definitely wins some points. So many characters. Some are unforgettable. I enjoyed the mystery surrounding Esther's mother that culminated in a night long rush to save her from herself. Some characters were downright unlikeable - Smallweed and Richard - I thought him to be very selfish. I'm glad I read it. I can finally say I truly enjoyed a Dickens. Kimberlone I caught up to the end of January‘s section of reading, but am now dragging behind on February...hoping to get caught up some before the end of the month. 2y

I love the little chapter heading pictures in my edition. Although I confess that before I read the chapter (27) I couldn‘t figure out why a bassoon! #whatthedickens

KVanRead Oh they are lovely and I loved that bit with the bassoon! 2y

Getting in some pre-Super Bowl reading, before I start putting together snacks for the game. I enjoy the festivities of the Super Bowl, but could care less for the football part. I‘m mainly in it for the food and commercials.

vivastory I usually feel the same, but I'm going to be cheering on the Chiefs 🏈 2y

#whattheDickens read along check in. How is everyone doing? Any theories on Lady Dedlock? I was wondering why some of this felt familiar then I realized I saw the adaptation 🤦‍♀️ it was a long time ago so most is still a mystery to me. Edit Happy Birthday Mr Dickens!! 🎉

Lcsmcat I‘m loving it, but wishing I had more time to read. (This week was a heavy work week.) I‘ve got some tickles of an idea about Lady Deadlock, but nothing I‘m willing to commit to print. 😀 2y
Cuilin @Lcsmcat I like your style, keep your cards close to your chest. (I‘m behind on reading due to crazy work week too🤷‍♀️ agh) 2y

meghathecloud I'm behind too...because I got distracted by another book while this gave me the side eye 2y
KVanRead I read a bunch earlier in the week, less in the last few days but feel pretty much on track and yes, still loving it. I do have a theory emerging about Lady Deadlock but like @Lcsmcat it‘s still too tenuous to share. I love the characters so much - how does Dickens manage that with what would be way too many characters with almost any other author? And I love his empathy for them, especially Joe and the man from Shropshire 2y
Lcsmcat @KVanRead Joe is great! My edition has an illustration of him I‘ll have to share later. 2y
quietjenn Add me to those who need to catch up s bit - I think I only managed one chapter this week 😕 maybe I'll have a chance to sink in today? No theories yet, but very much enjoying things! 2y
Kimberlone I also saw the BBC adaptation years ago so I do kind of already know what‘s going on with Lady Deadlock but most of the details I don‘t remember because it‘s been so long. Planning on getting some reading done today while the game is on! 2y
Lucy_Anywhere Good! I‘m on Chapter 19 and love seeing all the characters slowly being drawn together. The BBC adaptation is great, although it‘s been so long that I can‘t really remember what Lady Dedlock‘s deal is - I have some theories 2y
Butterfinger The chapter with the Smallwood family was tough for me to read. I know Dickens probably thought it humorous for an old man to lose his strength throwing a cushion at his wife who clearly suffers from dementia, but it wasn't. 2y
Cuilin @Butterfinger I‘m not sure he thought it funny but it does depict cruelty and ignorance which unfortunately exists even when facing issues like metal health and dementia. Dickens was not in the habit of shying away from humanities failings. We neglect or abuse those who need our care most. This was a huge concern to Dickens. 2y

Ch. 9: Signs and Tokens

“When I went upstairs to my own, I surprised myself by beginning to laugh about it, and then surprised myself still more by beginning to cry about it. In short, I was in a flutter for a little while; and felt as if an old chord had been more coarsest touched than it ever had been.”

Esther‘s reflections upon the burgeoning romance between Richard and Ada are contrasted with the surprise of her own unexpected suitor...

Kimberlone I‘ve seen the miniseries, but I was still surprised by the out-of-the-nowhereness of Mr. Guppy‘s proposal! #WhattheDickens @Cuilin (edited) 2y
Cuilin @Kimberlone oh he gives me creepy vibes. 2y
STORYBOOK-CAFE I love these old illustrations 2y
Kimberlone @Cuilin mr. Collins from Pride & Prejudice vibes for sure 2y
Kimberlone @Monticello me too! What is going on with Guppy‘s hair though?! 2y
