Bleak House | Charles Dickens
123 posts | 130 read | 1 reading | 82 to read
The law courts prevailing over the case of Jarndyce & Jarndyce are overwhelming in their pedantic, futile red-tape bureaucratic adherence to old principles and are partly based on Dickens' time as a young law clerk. With a massive cast of characters--many with ingeniously comic names--and his most complex plot, Bleak House is believed by many to be Dickens' greatest work. This is a free digital copy of a book that has been carefully scanned by Google as part of a project to make the world's books discoverable online. To make this print edition available as an ebook, we have extracted the text using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology and submitted it to a review process to ensure its accuracy and legibility across different screen sizes and devices. Just finished this behemoth of a book and I loved it so much! Nobody creates characters that just come alive like Charles Dickens does. Who else would have created a character like Mr. Skimpole? If you haven‘t read this book yet, I recommend it! Be warned, it took me two months to finish, but it was so worth it ☺️

Severnmeadows I love the BBC (TV series 2005) version too! 3mo

This worked so much better for me when read in installments! By the end I was racing through it. Also I definitely wanted to slap Mr Skimpole every time he appeared 🙄

I don't think I've read a book with so many characters before, there just have been 30 of them, all tangled together with complicated family lines, secret off spring and court cases. Did I get confused while reading? Totally! A lot of the time I wasn't sure if I was remembering the characters properly and there's so many sub plots going in its a really difficult and taxing read. I can't say I enjoyed this one.

VinceReads Same! I don‘t ever remember reading anything else that was as painful to get through as this one. And though I‘m among the apparent minority, I just never thought he was a great writer. 9mo

My #JulyReads —and I have tagged the REASON for so few July reads, other than, you know, life and such. All Picks, but the top two were the best. #mystery #chicklit #appalachianlit #thriller

allthingskayla I love The Death of Mrs. Westaway. 12mo
jillrhudy I liked it except that the main character thought she was inheriting the whole joint and kept going back to a dangerous ice cold prison cell. Who would do that? Not even me and I‘m the biggest pushover alive. 12mo

This book was a slow burn. Nearly 900 pages long and it wasn‘t until about 400 pages in that the story started to pick up, even though there were little hints dropped all along the way. But, I‘m glad I took the advice of other Littens and stuck with it. Once all the pieces started to fall in place, it was hard to stop reading. I was reminded of Tom Jones, which was similarly long and had a lot of characters and subplots.

Aimeesue I'm currently reading this with a group, in serial, so we read the same # of chapters each week as they were originally published, then talk about that instalment. When i was behind one week, i check LibriVox to see what recordings they had. Version 3, read by Mil Nicholson is absolutely brilliant. The range of different voices she does is truly astounding. Shes done most of the other Dickens novels, too. 12mo
TelevisionNeighbor I have this on my shelf to read soon...hopefully. 12mo

First, this is the story of Esther Summerson, uncovering the truth about her parents and in the process setting off a chain of events that include murder, blackmail and suicide. We also learn how she is related to the lawsuit of Jarndyce and Jarndyce, that has been going on for decennia!

Second, this is a story about morality, about whether the rich should take care of the poor.

Continued below 👇👇

BarbaraBB The story is told by Esther (a personal storyline) and by an unknown narrator (a very critical observer).
All in all it is a novel that has it all: suspense, romance, dialogue, scenery, tragedy. Combine this with a lot of characters and you have the ultimate Dickens.

Pickpick

I am late to Dickens—this is only my third, and I have a bunch more to read for #1001books

Bleak House is a BIG book centered around a ridiculously long-running legal case in 1800s England. Doesn‘t sound all that interesting... but oh my goodness it is. Satirical and witty, with a wide range of well-drawn characters, with a dash of mystery, intrigue, and love.

I like audio for long books, and this version is excellent.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

tomes4gnomes Just curious, do you buy or borrow your audiobooks? Where is your preferred place to get them? I only recently started listening to them, but the 2-week borrow time from my library (via Libby app) is way too short for me to complete long books. Any tips? 1y
sprainedbrain @tomes4gnomes I am always happy to talk about audiobooks. 🤓 I get them three ways: library (through the Libby app), Audible, and Playster. With Audible, you own your audiobooks-I almost never re-listen, so that‘s not important to me, but they have an excellent selection. Playster is a streaming service, so I pay a monthly subscription cost and can listen to as many as I want, but I don‘t own the books when done. I think they offer a free trial... 1y
sprainedbrain @tomes4gnomes Playster has a good selection, but I keep Audible because they don‘t have everything, and Audible has some really great originals I can‘t find elsewhere. I listen to audiobooks a few hours every day (driving, cleaning, exercising, etc), so I get through them faster than regular books. I also listen to most sped up, so I‘m sure that helps me get through more. Hope this helps! 1y
See All 13 Comments
tomes4gnomes @sprainedbrain Thanks! I will go check out Playster. I don‘t care about owning audiobooks either, but I want to have enough time to finish one that‘s more than 300 pages. 😁 I prefer to read paper books and have struggled to get into audio in the past, so I find 1 hour a day is about my limit, at least for now. (edited) 1y
sprainedbrain @tomes4gnomes I get that! I‘m also seeing lots of people talk about Scribd, which sounds similar to Playster. I am considering doing their free trial, too. Oh, and I think Audible still gives you a free book to start with to try it out. If you happen to join Audible, let me know, and I could send you another free book if I own any you are interested in. 😃 1y
emilyhaldi Sounds interesting- #stacked! 1y
tomes4gnomes @sprainedbrain Well I‘m definitely going to check out ALL of these free trials 🤩 and I‘ll gratefully take you up on the Audible offer if I go that route. Thank you again for taking the time to share all this info — you‘re a 🍑! 1y
Kaye Not to horn in on the conversation, but you can give an Audible book to anyone, even if they‘re not an Audible member. All you need is their email, and Audible sends them the book 😁 1y
Kaye Also, I love Dickens. I have yet to read a lot of them, mainly because I have to be in the right mood. I like his sense of humor and ability to describe his characters, plus all the funny names he gives them. 1y
sprainedbrain @Kaye you are right, but I once gifted one to a non-member, and that book ended up counting as her free one. I didn‘t think that was fair! Lol 1y
sprainedbrain @Kaye I laughed out loud so many times during this book! 1y
Kaye Your friend should‘ve done the online chat thing to get her other free book. I have been on their chat too many times to count ! Same with Amazon. 1y

It was a beautiful day for an #audiowalk on my lunch break. I‘m almost done with Bleak House. I‘m not sure why I dreaded starting this book so much - it‘s incredible!

BarbaraBB Oh yes, is it? I dread it too 😀 (edited) 1y
sprainedbrain @BarbaraBB it‘s really good! Very long, and very Dickensy (lol), so if you like audiobooks at all, I would recommend the version read by Sean Barrett and Teresa Gallagher. 😃 1y
BarbaraBB Thanks for the narrators recommendation! 1y

Had to read Bleak House in college and it slowly (because it‘s a monster and took a long time to read) became one of my favorites (and I don‘t know that I could really tell you why).

EscapedAcademic I LOVE Bleak House! Also, I once had a cocktail called a London Particular. 1y
justagirlwithabook @EscapedAcademic hahaha! That is fantastic!! 1y
EscapedAcademic @justagirlwithabook I am pretty sure it involved both gin and milk or something...it was gray and cloudy. I had it at Dickens Universe, this week-long retreat for academics. The book that year was Bleak House and every night they served a different themed cocktail. It was an AMAZING week. 1y
justagirlwithabook @EscapedAcademic Oh my gosh, that sounds absolutely amazing. I‘m jealous!! 1y

A bleak day for an #audiowalk with Bleak House.

Our weather is so incredibly weird... at the start of my hour it was 60 degrees and cloudy. By the end, it was 45 degrees and raining.

I‘m loving this book!

Crinoline_Laphroaig Every time I read a Flavia de Luce book and her sister Daffy is reading Bleak House (again) I think I should read it. 1y
Bookish.Heart Perfect setting for it! 1y
AnneCecilie I loved this one. One of my favorite books. 1y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Having just finished Bleak House, sounds about right! 😂 2y
KVanRead @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Good to know!😂 2y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @KVanRead Yep, lots of side characters...lots and lots...and info is passed around like an old game of telephone or whisper, where this one heard this bit, and this one saw this bit, and this one knew this one 20 yrs ago, they all have pieces to the puzzle though...it‘s getting them to the right people in the story that makes it interesting though. And truthfully that‘s closer to how info was passed pre phone/internet. 2y
KVanRead Interesting! @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m intrigued. (edited) 2y

#InspectorBucket from Bleak House played by Stephen Rea. I haven‘t seen this production but I think I need to. #DickensianDecember @jenniferw88

LeahBergen His name always makes me think of Hyacinth Bucket (“it‘s pronounced ‘Bouquet‘”) from the BBC show, Keeping Up Appearances. 😂😂 2y
mklong @LeahBergen Me too! 𗀄𗀄 I‘ve watched about half of this series and it‘s pretty fun so far. It‘s available on Britbox. 2y
saresmoore @LeahBergen 😂 I love Hyacinth! 2y
LeahBergen @mklong @saresmoore I love her embarrassing family so much. 😆 2y
