Coldest Girl in Coldtown
Coldest Girl in Coldtown | Holly Black
"Coldtown was dangerous, Tana knew. A glamorous cage, a prison for the damned and anyone who wanted to party with them."Tana lives in a world where walled cities called Coldtowns exist. In them, quarantined monsters and humans mingle in a decadently bloody mix of predator and prey. And once you pass through Coldtown's gates, you can never leave. One morning, after a perfectly ordinary party, Tana wakes up surrounded by corpses. The only other survivors of this massacre are her exasperatingly endearing ex-boyfriend, infected and on the edge, and a mysterious boy burdened with a terrible secret. Shaken and determined, Tana enters a race against the clock to save the three of them the only way she knows how: by going straight to the wicked, opulent heart of Coldtown itself.

This book has a great opening: the protagonist, Tana, wakes up in a bathtub to find that everyone at the party she attended the night before is dead. However, it goes downhill from there. I had such high hopes, but the plot meandered all over the place and I really just didn‘t care what happened to the characters.

Lindy It‘s been a while since I read this—I can‘t even remember if I finished it or not—but I remember being disappointed too. 3mo
TheLudicReader I actually really liked this one. 😂 3mo
CindyMyLifeIsLit @TheLudicReader I‘m glad! That‘s what is so wonderful about reading—every book speaks so many different languages that we, as readers, are always able to find those that we understand and connect to. ❤️ 3mo

I love Holly Black. I love love her writing. This book I did not love. It‘s started out strong and but then totally lost me. Maybe it was the corny YA aspect of the main characters personality, idk. it was gritty and violent and a cool concept but slogged. Some parts I loved, other parts like the chapters from different timelines and POV were boring

My current look. Not pictured: my feet in both socks snd slippers under the blanket. 🤣🤣

Susanita This looks like me the winter I spent at my mom‘s in Oklahoma. The wind really does come sweeping down the plain, right into my bedroom, despite my stepfather‘s valiant attempts at mitigation. 2y
CocoReads @Susanita it‘s unpleasant. I‘ll be heading to my parents around lunchtime because they still have power plus a whole house generator if they lose power. Plus they have actual food-I had peanut butter for breakfast. Because I haven‘t been to the store yet. As it turns out, that‘s probably a good thing. 2y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I hate it when the power goes out! Head to your parents early if you can. 2y

My first Holly Black novel and it pulled no punches. For YA, this was gory, dark, and at times very bleak — exactly what a vampire story should be.

This was a dark and haunting tale, filled with blood and betrayal. Written in a style that blends past and present, the story unfolds piece by piece. It reveals broken and flawed characters, each with their own burdens from a tormented past. This isn‘t a book for those who like a light read. Taking on this experience is going to require a taste for horror.

Book 8 finished for #screamathon. 🎃 @4thhouseontheleft

This was a fun book about vampires, with some interesting changes to the typical vampire tale. Although I read lots of YA books, this one to me just didn't quite work. I'm sure a teen would disagree and love the teenage romance aspect, but it and the teen angst started to get on my nerves toward the end.

Okay I know I‘m likely in the minority, but this is the 2nd Holly Black book I‘ve read & I just can‘t quite get into it. I‘m 50% through this current read and thinking about bailing...

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I didn‘t love this either. Haven‘t tried any of her others (except maybe the first curse workers book - which was interesting but I haven‘t gotten around to reading the rest so...) 3y
TheBookKeepers @thegirlwiththelibrarybag I read Cruel Prince & didn‘t like it either. It wasn‘t awful....just more like “eh” IMO. I know many ppl love her books, so maybe it‘s just me 😅 3y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @TheBookKeepers, nahhh, I think she‘s probably one of those authors I would have connected with if I was a teen when I first read her books... I feel meh about so many popular authors (Holly Black, Cassandra Clare, Sarah J. Maas) and I‘m becoming more ok about it 😂 3y
Johanna414 I struggle with her books - I usually really like the beginnings and then lose interest a third or halfway through and never finish them. The Cruel Prince is the only one of hers I‘ve finished so far, and I didn‘t love it. 3y
TheBookKeepers Good to know I‘m not alone in this YA world! 🖤. I feel more validated in my bailing of this lol! @Johanna414 3y

This was a great vampire novel. I wish there was a sequel to say what happened to Tana if she became a vampire or not. I really liked all the characters and the plot. Holly black is a great author of the creepy strange and weird.

I don‘t know why it took me so long to get to reading this one. I love Holly Black‘s books. I‘ve also always had a slight obsession with vampires. The world she creates could be ours - the characters are vivid and well developed. I loved Tana‘s bravery, and I really liked Gavriel, too. If you like a compelling vampire story, try this one!

For those of you closed due to cold, how cold does it have to get before that happens? And what are your normal average temps this time of year? I‘m super curious about this.
We are used to cold here, the above didn‘t count wind chill which on the ski mountain that day was -75. But -35 to those of us down in the valley.

JoScho Oh hell no! 4y
Djspens We have -25 actual temps and -35 to -50 wind-chill predicted for tomorrow in eastern Iowa. I'm coming to work but will bring a book, expecting a very slowly work day! 4y
Wife 🥶 right now wind chill -12. Everything open. But we‘re expecting colder temps in next couple days. I never know when school will close because the decision making seems random. 4y

LiterRohde @Trashcanman You sound just like my uncle who moved from WI to CA about a year and a half ago. Letting us know that it‘s 75 and sunny in January. Funny how he downplays the threat of fires, mudslides, and earthquakes that replaced a little cold weather. 🤣 (edited) 4y

staci.reads The temperature is dropping to -23 tonight and tomorrow, but the wind chills are supposed to hit -50 to -60. We don't often close for cold alone, but schools are shut down for 2 days and many businesses. 4y
