11/22/63: A Novel | Stephen King
ON NOVEMBER 22, 1963, THREE SHOTS RANG OUT IN DALLAS, PRESIDENT KENNEDY DIED, AND THE WORLD CHANGED. WHAT IF YOU COULD CHANGE IT BACK? In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen Kingwho has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writertakes readers on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it. It begins with Jake Epping, a thirty-five-year-old English teacher in Lisbon Falls, Maine, who makes extra money teaching GED classes. He asks his students to write about an event that changed their lives, and one essay blows him awaya gruesome, harrowing story about the night more than fifty years ago when Harry Dunnings father came home and killed his mother, his sister, and his brother with a sledgehammer. Reading the essay is a watershed moment for Jake, his lifelike Harrys, like Americas in 1963turning on a dime. Not much later his friend Al, who owns the local diner, divulges a secret: his storeroom is a portal to the past, a particular day in 1958. And Al enlists Jake to take over the mission that has become his obsessionto prevent the Kennedy assassination. So begins Jakes new life as George Amberson, in a different world of Ike and JFK and Elvis, of big American cars and sock hops and cigarette smoke everywhere. From the dank little city of Derry, Maine (where theres Dunning business to conduct), to the warmhearted small town of Jodie, Texas, where Jake falls dangerously in love, every turn is leading eventually, of course, to a troubled loner named Lee Harvey Oswald and to Dallas, where the past becomes heart-stoppingly suspenseful, and where history might not be history anymore. Time-travel has never been so believable. Or so terrifying.

This book was amazing! I had previously avoided Stephen King novels because I assumed they were all horror but I stumbled across this by accident and it was perfect. The cross between science fiction and historical fiction was excellent and I love history. There are a few portions that made me cringe a little bit because they were violent and very bluntly written but otherwise amazing.

Not that I was planning on reading any of King‘s horror books (I have nightmares over horror film trailers on TV), I know without a doubt in my mind now that I will never, ever pick any of his horror books up. I wouldn‘t sleep again, his world creation is the BEST I‘ve come across. Mr. King is one heck of a storyteller 🤯 100 pages at a time would fly by because you cannot help but get hooked and are utterly engrossed in the story. (cont‘d 👇)

Aims42 I‘ll admit, I skimmed a bit in the middle with George and Sadie, that storyline got too heavy for me. And at a page count of 800+, a little skimming happens 🤷🏼‍♀️ While reading I was wondering who I could recommend this to, and after finishing it, I‘m still not sure 🤔 It‘s good, it‘s not one I‘d need to read again, but I don‘t regret taking the time to read it. 2mo
jlhammar I haven‘t read the book, but really enjoyed the adaptation (hulu, I think?) 2mo
Aims42 @jlhammar That‘s good to know!! I‘ll check it out 😁👍 2mo

Amiable This was one of my favorite King books! 2mo
Aims42 @Amiable I totally get the following King has after reading this 👍 I‘m very intrigued about “Fairy Tale” now 2mo
Amiable @Aims42 I read a lot of his stuff when I was younger, but now that I‘m in my 50s I avoid his horror. This one was a good story without the supernatural creepy factor. 🙂 2mo
Aims42 @Amiable A really good story, for sure!! I really enjoyed his Easter Eggs as well, that adds to me wanting to read his newest lol I could maybe get a few more without having to google 😆 2mo
Amiable @Aims42 My son and I also really liked his “Dark Tower” series if you haven‘t read that. 2mo
Aims42 @Amiable Ooo, I‘ll definitely look into it! Thanks!! 2mo

A masterpiece for many reasons, and in many ways. But when I really sit and think about this book, after what is now my third or fourth time reading it, I come back to one story element, the most simple of them, and yet the soul of this book: Jake and Sadie.

11/22/63 is definitely one of Stephen King's better novels. It was very well researched, especially regarding Oswald. I felt he also did a good job of bringing out both the good and bad of American society in the late 50s and early 60s. Once you know what Jake is attempting, you want to move quickly to Dallas. At times it seems the love interest with Sadie and the town of Jodie is too drawn out. I guess it makes the stakes higher for Jake. 4/5. 👇

Bigcountry15 I think the alternate 2011 is a bit far-fetched. Almost like a worst case "butterfly effect" scenario. I enjoyed the ending, though. It was a nice touch. 2mo
Bigcountry15 Ghost Story had a similar plot line: An old dying man convinces a younger person to go to a different dimension on a rescue mission... 2mo

Although it was a big, heavy book, I really enjoyed it. It had several stories intertwined aside from the JFK/Lee Harvey Oswald story. I‘m usually not a fan of Stephen King, but to my surprise I found this story entertaining.

With so many jaw-dropping moments and unexpected twists, King will keep you enthralled for the whole story.

The worlds that you can get lost in with King as your guide are limitless. This story of time travel, the opportunity to change an outcome from bad to good, and the earthshattering butterfly effect create such a mind-bending read.

A diner owner with unreasonable low prices keeps his costs down because he buys beef in 1958, gets his best customer involved in a scheme to change the world for the better. At first, he‘s not convinced but a tragedy from a student‘s past inspires him.

Loved it. I honestly don‘t know much about the different conspiracies, but the history is balanced well with the relationships & characters. It never felt like a slog.

Roary47 I really enjoyed this one from King. The book was a chuckster, but it was so fun to read I didn‘t really notice or mind. Normally, I don‘t like time jumping, but King made it manageable so I wasn‘t lost. Yes, he was mostly in the past which helped. I‘m happy with the conclusion as well. I was trying to figure out how the yellow/black card man was connected and that supernatural element made the most sense. 8mo
BookwormAHN I also really enjoyed this one. I thought the yellow card men were fascinating. I hope they pop up again in a future book 🤞🏻 Also I loved the scenes with Bev and Ritchie. It was one of my favorites. 8mo
BarkingMadRead @BookwormAHN yes! I loved that glimpse of Bev and Richie “mid story” for them! 8mo
KathyWheeler @BookwormAHN I hope the yellow card men appear in a future book as well. This is one of my favorite King books. I think he handles the time jumps really well. 8mo
bthegood This is one of my favorite King novels - I love that he incorporates characters from other stories (including the town of Derry) but if you didn't read the other stories it didn't take away from this one. I like that he looks deeper than the “butterfly effect“ - he examines the what ifs of falling in love in the past, and wanting to stay with someone (or bring them back with you) - (edited) 8mo
5feet.of.fury Loved it! I‘m not the biggest history buff so I am super curious as to how much research was done to the different theories. it‘s such a good story. I loved Sadie and all they went through together. 8mo
Erinsuereads This is the first king I ever read! 🙌🙌 And still one of my favorites 😍 I like to recommend this one to people who are king-curious and almost always ita a hit 8mo
Reading.w.Dee I second how he creates whole worlds and connects them within each other. I definitely enjoyed that in this one! And I agree, the Yellow Card Man had me extremely curious! There are so many layers to his novels that, even thought it was long, it kept you enthralled the whole time! Thank you for motivating me to read this one! 8mo

One of my favorite King books - not just the concept of going back and changing things, but all of the implications of it (like falling in love, if you stay, if you and another person come back) - this was a reread, so I did the audiobook - very good to listen to the second time around, and story just as good as I remembered.
Make a great day everyone - 🙂

4✨This was a beast, but it didn‘t really seem like it. I loved how engaged I was in the story. One man goes back in time to save JFK from assassination. Yet, changing the time line causes consequences. Is it really better? Even though it was a hefty book I found myself still wanting more. I would say my only complaint minus the main characters I forgot who a few people were so their relationships to one another was challenging. #losersclub

I started reading Stephen King in November of this year. I read Later first, followed by Shawshank Redemption, then I picked up 11/22/63. 11/22/63 was my last and favorite book of 2022. I fell in love with the characters. I even found myself (momentarily)empathizing with the characters I thought I would hate. I was completely drawn into this story and found myself fantasizing about a time filled with cigarette smoke and absent of social media.

KristiAhlers @MrT I will definitely check those out. 12mo
Kimberlone I think this is one of his best! A bit long (like most SK books) but really a standout of his more recent novels. 12mo
KristiAhlers @Kimberlone yeah this one and his brand new one weren‘t what I was expecting from having read The Shining. I like the depth of change to be honest. 12mo

I have several, but I‘ll go with 11/22/63. I think the length of the book is why I‘ve avoided it (849 pages). I have no doubt it will be an excellent read! Thank you for the tag @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks #littenswanttoknow

AmyG It‘s so good! 13mo
cinda.marie @AmyG I need to get started! 13mo

Pickpick

I'm very surprised at how much awe I feel toward this work. I never thought I would read King - too much violence, gore, horror. But I was interested. What makes him so special? There were moments of gore, but there were also moments of beauty and peace and the terror that swept over you was deep and unexpected. I will definitely read more of his sci-fi work. This was amazing. George/Jake and Sadie. Love. #alternativehistory #BBRC @LibrarianRyan

KathyWheeler He gets pigeonholed a lot, but I think he‘s much more than horror. You might like Joyland as well. It‘s not supernatural and it‘s short, but it‘s one of my favorites of his books. (edited) 1y
LibrarianRyan ❤️😁🌟 1y
TheAromaofBooks Yes!! That's totally the the right tag. Fabulous progress!! I haven't read any King either for the same reasons, but maybe I should give him a try anyway. I know he is an incredibly prolific and influential writer. 1y

Day 229.
Here I will note 365 books (or as many as I will have before I get tired) that have shaped my taste in literature. No explanations, no reviews. Just the cover of the book.
I do not challenge anyone. You are all welcome to take part.

Although this is technically a diner and not a #Cafe, it's close. 😁 Al's Diner is the location where Jake Epping is able to time travel to try and save JFK.

This is one of my favorite King books and I recommend it all the time, even to non-King fans.

Never in a million years, did I think I‘d become such a huge #stephenking fan. Now comes the million dollar question. Should I read the book first or watch the series first?

Erinsuereads The series deviates A LOT. So if you are picky about that kind of stuff, maybe watch the series first that way you can enjoy it without comparing it to the book 2y
AmyG Read the book first. While both are good….the book is better. Sorry @ErinSueMreads 😂 2y
Erinsuereads I was trying to be diplomatic 😂😂😂 I HATED the show 😂😂😂😂😂😂 @AmyG 2y

AmyG @ErinSueMreads I didn‘t hate it….but the book was just so good. The show was just so different. King‘s books are always better though I do LOVE Shawshank Redemption. 2y
BkClubCare Read the book! 😎 2y
Erinsuereads The book really is soooo good. It was the first king I ever read. It's still one of my favorites and I'm more than halfway through his catalog now. @AmyG James Franco was excellent though. Did you watch under the dome? 2y
AmyG I really liked Under the Dome but didn‘t really like the series. @ErinSueMreads And I liked James Franco, too. (edited) 2y
Reagan Book then series, both excellent! 2y
TrishB Definitely book! 2y
