Bookwormjillk I loved this one as a teen. I used to sit with my friend Amy trying to set things on fire with our minds for hours. It was the super power I most wanted to have when I was about 13. I still liked it on this re-read, but I thought the middle dragged a bit. Not a bad ending for King.

Also I think the first season of Stranger Things owes this book a lot!

AllDebooks @Bookwormjillk yes, I found it a similar premise to ST. I loved the story and characters. I found it quite gripping in places. 4d

5feet.of.fury @Bookwormjillk yes! I thought it ended solidly, which he sometimes just doesn‘t do lol Agree about Stranger Things too. 4d
5feet.of.fury It‘s kind of smack between Carrie and The Institute both plotwise and character/scifi focussed. This was my first read of it, I just think it‘s neat 4d
ElizaMarie Wasn't able to re-read this one - I really need to organize my reading room - I know I had a copy of it somewhere! Anyway, I remember loving this one when I first read it, and as a fellow #KingGirlie I did the same @BookwormJillK 4d
bekakins Totally agree with the comments ref ST. This is one of my absolute favourites. 4d
kwmg40 Still waiting for a library loan, but I will get to this one eventually! 3d
TieDyeDude @5feet.of.fury I found I liked this more than Carrie. I don't remember The Institute enough to compare. But, yes, it was just really neat. As much as I love when he takes the time to build a town and it's inhabitants, with this and The Shining, I'm liking his more narrowly focused stories. 11h
5feet.of.fury @TieDyeDude the Institute was pretty much Stranger Things and you got the backstory on the whole town 😂 11h
BarkingMadRead @TieDyeDude 💯 they both have their pros and cons. This is one of my faves for sure 11h

Books don‘t give answers. They make you ask better questions.

BarkingMadRead I know that this was a political book, please make sure your comments are kind. 1mo
Leftcoastzen Love your well loved old copy! 1mo
BarkingMadRead @Leftcoastzen I had to tape part of the binding this time! 🙈 this poor old thing 1mo

TieDyeDude I listened to this on audio, narrated by James Franco. It was a tough listen because Franco sounded completely uninterested. I really enjoyed the foreshadowing used by King, like the seemingly random lightning rod salesman. It was a long road to get to the events of the conclusion, but I loved the ride. I'd like to re-read a physical copy in the future; I feel like I'd like it even more without Franco's droning... 1mo
BarkingMadRead @TieDyeDude ugh how disappointing! 1mo
Bookwormjillk SHOOT! I accidentally got The Dark Half instead. I always mix those up. 😂

Not finished yet but I'm enjoying it. Re-read The Dead Zone a few years back and liked that too.

Bklover This is one of my favorites. Not sure why, except I remember reading it when it first came out. I loved it then, (I was 19), and I still reread it occasionally. It still holds up as one of my favorites. 1mo
kwmg40 Like @TieDyeDude, I disliked James Franco's narration, but otherwise I loved the story, and it really is hard not to think about today's political situation while reading this book. 1mo
kwmg40 After finishing the book, I immediately watched the 1983 adaptation, which I thought was very good. My only complaint is that it was so condensed. All the plot elements were there (with some minor changes) but so many details that contributed to the character development were cut. 1mo

Bookwormjillk I liked this more when I read it as a teen I think. As an adult I thought it was too long and SK was a bit too much with some of the sidebars. It read very late 70‘s early 80‘s to me. Still King do readable but not a favorite. 2mo
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk 💯 could have been a short story! 2mo

JenlovesJT47 I enjoyed this and am looking forward to the movie adaptation! It is one long existential crisis that fills you with dread. 2mo
AllDebooks I did not like this. I found it repetitive and overlong. It certainly was tense and horrifying. I agree, @BarkingMadRead it would be better as a concise short story. 2mo
5feet.of.fury I didn‘t like it either. Weird side note though, there was a 20 mile race that went from Kittery Maine to Salisbury Massachusetts and goes through the part of Rt1 NH that they were on at one point. I was there once also trying to beat an aggressive time cut off 2mo
KathyWheeler I liked it but feel it would‘ve worked better as a novella. I also have mixed feelings about the ending. 2mo
ElizaMarie How will this change when the movie version comes out? I am curious to see what direction this goes - and what the movie ending will be. I enjoyed this book - I liked the boys' conversations throughout the walk and the different character developments. I agree with y'all thinking this would have fared much better as a novella. 2mo
Karkar This was okay for me. Real middle of the road. It did do a very good job of stressing me out. 2mo
Julies_Bookshelf_Adventures I felt like this would have been better as a novella. It had an interesting premise, but kinda lost itself for a bit. Really stressful in general, but I enjoyed the thought experiment of how psychologically and physically something like this would affect people. 2mo
kwmg40 I'd read this book some years ago and, though I liked the story very much, I found it very disturbing and decided not to reread it at this time. I've always been intrigued by the real-life Swedish Fotrally race inspired by this book. Nothing terrible happens to the competitors that drop out of that race, thankfully! 2mo
MatchlessMarie Late finishing this one.. is this a metaphor 🫣 It was physically exhausting reading this one as someone who struggles with daytime drowsiness reading about how tired all these guys were. 🫩 I also didn‘t realize it was being adapted. I will be interested to see the movie take on it. I really like the concept but it definitely dialed up the existential dread for me 😱 2mo
