Downing can write. She manages to put suspense into a ten-day road trip across the country.

From time to time the story got a bit boring, probably like a road trip of this proportion.

The solution was a teeny-tiny bit predictable, but that's basically what kept me reading, I wanted to know whether I was right.

I'm determined to finish the ARC and The Jane Austen Book Club, both are rather slow reads.

Would like to finish Aurora Rising.

Josh has to come back to his small hometown in Kent when his father is diagnosed with terminal cancer. He comes to terms with his father's illness and reconnects with his estranged father, gets used to small town life again, meets old friends, among them the One who got away.

It's a #romcom, but it's also a story about small-town life and about family.

1) German and English are the two languages I feel most comfortable with. There are many more languages that I can "use" from a level of "I get the gist" to "I might be able to communicate after the second glass", and computer languages.
2) an ARC
3) I had salad and couscous wraps that's 7 different colours ?
4) tricky, have just installed a new keyboard on my phone, probably ???

This was unexpectedly good.

Croatian hitman "Toxic" has to flee the US and gets stranded in Iceland, the country with no guns, being mistaken as a famous televangelist. When this disguise falls through he has to face his past. A past strewn with dead bodies from the Balkan war and his days as a hitman. Housecleaning his soul through "Torture therapy" he is trying for a new life in the cold.

A Study in Charlotte | Brittany Cavallaro
post image

We had a day off yesterday thanks to the storm that's blowing across western Europe. Since it was my daughter's birthday this was perfect. No reading for me though.

I read with the kids.
VE Schwab's ADSOM has a very good translation. Minor continuance mistakes due to two translators, but it's easy to read aloud.
Cavallaro's Charlotte Holmes story is testing me. 👇🏻

Best gift: a projector with rotating LEDs creating wave-like images.

julesG A Study in Charlotte might be good. The German translation is terrible. Clunky sentences. I suspect there are some mistranslations, which draw attention to detail and turn possible continuancy errors/tiny plot holes into gaping manholes. khooliha Can't believe there are 2 books where teens new to reaping try to tell Death his business! This trope is really grating on this reread. 4d
khooliha @amber_ldsmom Ridcully is really lovely in this one! I like how Pratchett keeps putting him in pretty different contexts, ones we don't see the other wizards in. They would ignore a deeply occult teen girl, to be sure. 4d
amber_ldsmom @khooliha I agree! 👏🏻 4d
julesG @khooliha Just a hundred years ago teens like Mort would start an apprenticeship. And at one point every apprentice in history thought they knew how the job could be done better and told their masters. I think it's just grating because it happens to DEATH. 4d

I was close to bailing at chapter 27, but I'm glad I stuck with it.

Homicide Detective Jude had been abducted and held captive for several years. She managed to escape and got her job back. Now she tries to not only solve the murder of a young woman, but also the abduction of another teenage girl that happened 3 years ago, too.

The plot twist was obvious, to me, very early on, but it was interesting to see Jude get back on her feet.

#wondrouswednesday @Eggs

Texreader I‘m impressed. I‘ve torn more than a few dust jackets keeping them on and that‘s as bad as ripping the book, so I‘ve given up. 3w
julesG @Texreader I only read physical books at home, the Kindle has become my travel companion. It has reduced the damage immensely. 3w
Crazeedi @julesG I find I've done the same, kindle is traveling companion, books in house. Works well 3w
Crazeedi @Texreader I find I fall asleep, wake up and read in middle of the night! 3w
Eggs @julesG @Crazeedi @Texreader I usually take kindle only when I leave home-plenty of tbr on it 😂 3w

I haven't seen the show, but knew what the plot twist was at about 20%.

Not going to read the other two books.

jenniferajanes I haven‘t read this one, but I have read Recursion and Abandon by Black Crouch. Dark Matter is next on my list. If you haven‘t read his other stuff, give him a try. I like his writing! (Based on your review, I may choose to skip this one, though.) 3w
julesG @jenniferajanes I'll try one of his other books. I might have seen too many M Night Shyamalan films to truly appreciate Pines. 😉 3w

I understand why Backman is a hot commodity.

I liked the story, but I'm not sure I'll pick up another book by him.

Thanks for the recommendation @Cinfhen

Cinfhen Awwww, too bad it wasn‘t a total hit for you! Im not sure this was my favorite Backman but I think it‘s pretty true to how he writes 3w
julesG @Cinfhen I often struggle with Scandinavian writers. Not sure why. 3w
ljuliel This was the only one of his I could get through. I don‘t think I understand their humor , if that‘s what it‘s supposed to be. 3w
See All 7 Comments
julesG @ljuliel It's not the humour that I struggle with. I can't grasp what exactly my problem with Scandinavian writers is. I've tried so many different genres and authors. 3w
ljuliel Yea, I get what you mean. I think these would all originate from the same general area : the Hendrik Groen books, The Backman books, the Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window ( and whatever the heck he did) , the Steig Larsson books. I don‘t get them. I‘ve started the blasted Ove book a dozen times. Don‘t find it funny, entertaining...just as boring as a cup of warm water. 3w
KateFulfordAuthor Interesting review & comments - thanks 3w
julesG @KateFulfordAuthor It's a very brief review and actually doesn't say anything about the book. Sorry. The writing was good. The characters were well-composed. But as much as I like Scandinavia and its people, I struggle with Nordic literature of any kind (no, not true, still love Astrid Lindgren). 3w

Turned the speed up to 1.7 (I get it now, @DannyHattan) the pitch is a bit high, though.

Given all the praise for this book (see my blurb from a few days ago), I was thoroughly underwhelmed reading it.

No twists, no real suspense. It was pretty clear to me why Heather shot those two people and the supposed to be "shocking" last chapter was no shock, nor a surprise.

I might be writing poetry in the future. 😁

Just couldn't leave the book shop without taking this home.

GingerAntics Love those!!! We used to have them when I was a kid, and we have them at work now (but no one ever uses them, sadly). 3w
julesG @GingerAntics You should use them at work. 3w

4pm, it's getting less noisy. Just some sawing and the workers are down to one drill.

You've clearly heard my sigh of relief

We've earned some homemade triple chocolate cookies for this day. 🍪🍪🍪 (The two biscuits have meanwhile vanished while I was typing. I suppose my kids are either related to the cookie monster or magicians. 🤪)

Let the reading commence!!!

Two doctors appointments this morning. Pouring rain that had soaked my shoes and trouser legs halfway between my door and the tram stop. A team of construction workers above my flat are using not one, no TWO drills to get the drywall frames and plumbing installed.

I can't flee my flat (cleaning lady), I can't read, I can't listen to an audiobook. Can't concentrate on my next thought. I want to have a temper tantrum right about now.

Suet624 🤦🏻‍♀️ I‘m sorry. 3w

squirrelbrain Oh no, poor you! 😡 3w
ljuliel I hope tomorrow is better. Some days, when it rains, it pours. Everything piles up on you and you‘d really just like to scream. Hang in there. Better days ahead. 3w
julesG @ljuliel Just until the end of March. The attic's being turned into two flats and they are supposed to be ready by April. It's only been 5 months of construction work already, what's 2 more. 😬 3w
julesG @ljuliel and they are working Monday to Saturday and the landlord does some work himself on Sundays. 3w
Deifio Urgh, sounds awful! I hope tomorrow will be better! Can't promise anything on the weather front though, it's supposed to snow here... 3w
julesG @Deifio I'd love some snow. We're set for more rain though. 3w
ljuliel That would get on your last nerve if it‘s nonstop like that. No wonder it‘s bothering you . That‘s a long time to put up with it. Hopefully they‘ll get a move on and get it finished sooner. If they‘re working that often, you‘d think they‘d be wrapping it up. 3w
Trashcanman ♥️ hugs 3w
AmyG That sucks. May time go quickly. 3w
Eggbeater My sympathies. Some days just suck and there's no getting around it. 😢 3w

#BookReport and #WeeklyForecast

Left column is what I finished this week

Middle and right is in progress. Reading two books with the kids.

The Maybe books are audiobooks that I unearthed in Kindle Unlimited (have to make the most out of my trial membership). Let's hope I have a lot of crafting or DIY to do this week. 🤪

@Cinfhen

Cinfhen I recently discovered that Kindle Unlimited includes some audiobooks ‼️🙌🏻definitely sweetens the deal ❣️ 3w
julesG @Cinfhen Wish there were more audiobooks in English, though. KU on Amazon.de has a lot of historical romance and second to third rate thrillers in English, but all the interesting books come in German translation read by German narrators I can't stand. 3w
Cinfhen Ugh, that‘s annoying 3w

Made sweet buns listening to several #audiobooks this morning to drown out the din the carpenters are making above my flat (they are working on the framework for drywalling right now).

Soul Music by Terry Pratchett
Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir
And the tagged book, since I needed something very light and fluffy.

#FriYayIntro @4thhouseontheleft @howjessreads

1) have to admit, can't believe January is over already. It just flew by, I had so many things I wanted to finish/get done before the end of the month. Oh well, there's always February.
2) Nevernight by Jay Kristoff - I read a lot of So-So and Pan books. My reading year can only improve.
3) easy, I want to finish the trilogy before my birthday (end of March)

4thhouseontheleft Strong meme game. See ya, January! Although February is usually my least favorite month of the year, at least it tends to go by quickly. 4w
AlaMich Man, I cannot agree with you about January! It feels to me like it has lasted about three months already. It's been so endlessly gloomy, I'm pretty sure i will burst into flame if and when the sun ever emerges. 4w

Could add the #audiobook to my Kindle version for just €5.95. Who am I to refuse this offer?

So, chores and a book it is until the kids come home early today.

@DuckOfDoom #buddyread

Lindy Excellent choice. 😊 4w
julesG @Lindy I like it so far. But have to admit, I needed the first two chapters to get into the story. At first it felt like I was missing something. Now I hope @DuckOfDoom won't kill me, I ran ahead and have read/listened to chapter 6 while baking sweet buns. 4w
Lindy I got more and more enthralled as I progressed with this book. 4w
DuckOfDoom 😂 so haven't even started yet, but I will have some time during a boring birthday on the weekend 4w
julesG @DuckOfDoom No pressure. I just discovered a few audiobooks on Kindle Unlimited ( I snagged a 3 month trial period at only 99 cent) 4w
