Making History | K. J. Parker

Pickpick

History is... propaganda. When the dictator of a small kingdom demands that twelve scholars construct an ancient city and its history from scratch, to justify his 'expansion plans', that's what they do.

A KJ Parker Dark Academia/Historical Fantasy novella, with his usual unnamed narrator that might or might not be unreliable.

Sorry Ms Jackson, but this was utter rubbish!! Especially for your adult mystery debut.

Flat characters, repetitive, and I knew I should have bailed the moment the doctors let the main character leave the hospital about 36 hours after a massive brain injury and emergency brain surgery with "change the bandages daily".

#audiobook narration didn't help the book either. But at 2.5x it was over quickly.

kwmg40 This story felt pretty dark for a Discworld novel, even if it did contain some very funny scenes. Two aspects that I liked very much: the continuing character development of Vimes and the hilarious and intriguing Dis-organiser. 1w
See All 7 Comments
julesG @kwmg40 The Dis-Organiser was hilarious indeed. 1w
julesG Yes, the novel was darker than what we've seen so far, but it can't all be sunshine and rainbows. Not even on Discworld. I think Pratchett used the Watch novels deliberately to show the darker side of life. 1w
willaful I think this was one of his more ambitious books and it's not entirely successful. But it's full of fantastic gut-punch scenes, as well as laughs. 1w
julesG @willaful There's a lot packed into the story. This time round I noticed a lot of small things connected to history (wars, border disputes, fishing rights squabbles,...) that I didn't notice upon my first read or didn't know about back then, which make more sense to me and made the novel feel less 'unsuccessfully ambitious'. 1w

Read and reviewed in July #NetGalley #ARC #MountARC

Eleanor and the League of the Scarlet Pimpernel are back on English soil, but that doesn't mean their fight is over. On the contrary, the vampires are conspiring again and are trying to take down the League one member at a time, it seems. Eleanor's mission, given to her by Anima, leads her to uncover a centuries old secret that could mean an end to the vampires influencing humans.
⬇️

julesG Eleanor feels torn between the many directions to follow: Anima wants her to uncover the secret, the League needs her, the French Revolution would like to use her as an asset, she wants to be with Charles, she wants to learn more about (her) magic, but she also just wants to make dresses with lovely embroidery. Add the class divide that Eleanor finds insurmountable but everyone else seems to have long forgotten about and accepted her ⬇️ 3w
julesG as one of their own and you have a cauldron of inner turmoil about to bubble over. Yet it never does. I wanted Eleanor to challenge her position and not just accept it and please everyone around her. I wanted her to be egoistic for once.

All in all it is a reasonably good ending to the trilogy. I just wish a few more questions about Eleanor's magic had been answered. Maybe we'll get a novella set after the end of this book at some point?

Violet is neurodivergent, extremely book smart, but inexperienced at interacting with people and charmingly blunt. She's a new doctor just out of university and doing her rotation in a hospital. She meets Gus, an anaesthesiologist, on her first nightshift. He's confident, likeable, easy on the eyes, and nice to Violet. Violet could fall for him instantly, but he's still hung up on his ex-fiancée.

I enjoyed spending time with the wonderfully strong women of this series, Taishi, Salminde and Qisami again. And yes, I also enjoyed seeing Jian, the chosen one, continue to struggle with the burden of being the chosen one.

The third book has all the same things I liked about the other instalments in the series: found family, banter, well-crafted fight scenes, and characters to root for.

And now I'll re-read the whole series.

A vampire mystery is less about gory details or enthralling vampires and more about lonely people. Don't get me wrong, it's also about catching the murderer, but mainly it is about how lonely the individual POV characters and some of the side-characters are.

Fourth and last book in the Tomes and Tea series.

Dedication made me chuckle.

Published: 12 August 2025

This last book wraps up the series nicely, but I'm still sad this is the last book. I hope we get some spin-offs or novellas set in this universe in the future.

⬇️

julesG Picking up where the last book ended, Reyna is kidnapped. But Reyna being Reyna, she isn't very fazed about it. The only thing that irks her is that there is a strange alchemical circle under her cell. This needs investigating and leads Kianthe and Reyna to the Magicary, which leads them to rogue alchemists, which leads them to... Ha, no, not going to spoil it.

⬇️
1mo
julesG Meanwhile Tawney is swarmed with tourists hoping to visit New Leaf and get a glimpse of the Arcandor and her wife the Queen. The townsfolk isn't happy with the influx of tourists and the tourists aren't happy with how the town handles the situation. It might mean the end of New Leaf and relocation for Kianthe and Reyna. 1mo

A decent ending to the series/trilogy, but not how I expected things to end.

The story starts right where Shadow Cabinet ended - not going to spoil the ending of book two here, people who have read it know what happened. From there lots of things are going on that lead to a lot of loose ends to tie up and Dawson used a rather deus ex machina method to achieve this.

Third book in the Magpie Murders series.

Susan is back in London. She's fed up with the Atticus Pünd novels. Twice she's been close to death because of them already. And now there is a new Atticus Pünd manuscript, a continuation novel by Eliot Grace. Well, a tiny peak at the first part of the manuscript can't hurt. Right?

I enjoyed this, but somehow both denouements did not come as a surprise.

TieDyeDude I have always had a problem with this site, even before the name change. I sign up for their newsletter, and I get it for a few weeks, then it stops. So frustrating because I love the site. Thanks for the info! 2mo

julesG @TieDyeDude I used to have problems with the ebook downloads they offered. I had to use a strange work-around to get them. But haven't had any problems with the newsletter. 2mo

kwmg40 I enjoyed this one very much. I'd read it several years ago, but liked it even more on reread, mostly because I appreciated the return of Gaspode after having read Moving Pictures since. 2mo
julesG Has anyone read the short story? 2mo

BarbaraJean Somehow I missed the tag for this yesterday! And I actually finished this one on time! 😆 I loved getting to know the Watch characters better, especially Vimes, Carrot, Detritus, and Angua. And I found so much of it uncannily relevant to current events in the USA. I just read the (very!) short story (on L-Space). I love that Carrot interviews Death as a witness! 2mo
julesG @BarbaraJean Tagging so many at once is wonky sometimes. Yes, it's a short short story, but I liked it. I even attempted reading it in different languages. 2mo
willaful @julesG I read it but I don't really remember anything other than that I enjoyed it. Oh, Barbara reminded me about the interview with Death, that was hilarious! (edited) 2mo
julesG @willaful 😁 that's like me remembering Men at Arms has Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomics, his wedding and him not leaving the Watch after all. There's Carrot's first romantic encounter; and Vetinari still running the city at the end. And I could probably quote some iconic lines, both the funny and the strikingly apt ones about society/weapons/... 2mo
