From the author of the "exciting, suspenseful, horrifying" (Stephen King) Fever House, a Vietnam veteran and his adopted niece hunt--and are hunted by--the vampire that slaughtered their family. It's the winter of 1975, and Duane Minor, back home in Portland, Oregon, after a tour in Vietnam, is struggling to quell his anger and keep his drinking in check, keep his young marriage intact, and keep the nightmares away. Things get even more complicated when his thirteen-year-old niece, Julia, is sent across the country to live with Duane and his wife, Heidi, after a tragedy. But slowly, carefully, guided by Heidi's love and patience, the three of them are building a family. Then Minor crosses the wrong man: John Varley, a criminal with a bloody history and a trail of bodies behind him. Varley, who sleeps during the day beneath loose drifts of earth and grows teeth in the light of the moon. In an act of brutal retaliation, Varley kills Heidi, leaving Minor broken with guilt and Julia filled with rage. The two of them are left united by only one thing: the desire for vengeance. As their quest brings them into the dark orbit of immortal, undead children, silver bullet casters, and the bevy of broken men drawn to Varley's ferocity, Minor and Julia follow his path of destruction from the gritty alleyways of 1970s Portland to the desolate highways of the Northwest and the snow-lashed plains of North Dakota--only to have Varley turn his vicious power back on them. Who will prevail, who will survive, and what remains of our humanity when our thirst for revenge trumps everything else?

Back in one of my favorite places in the world (a picturesque cabin in Glenford, Ohio) and nothing to do but read and watch my dog try to police the squirrels. #dogsoflitsy

Sparklemn I always tell my cat that those squirrels think they run the world but they do not! Yes, I talk to my cat like he‘s a person. 🤪 3d

I'm going to post reviews of 3 books that I have read recently & have stood out the most. First up is Rosson's “Coffin Moon.“ Vietnam vet Duane Minor lives above the bar The Last Call with his wife, Heidi, & their niece Julia whom they have been raising since Julia's mom was sent to prison. The typical clientele of The Last Call are vets & blue collar workers with zero tolerance for drug dealers, (CONT)

vivastory so when a couple of bikers arrive one night they are soon thrown out. Minor's mother-in-law tells him to not only allow them into the bar, but to let them do whatever they want. Shortly afterwards things go sideways & a road revenge story ensues. Rosson has created a good entry in vampire fiction with solid character work, perfect pacing, vampire story easter eggs strewn throughout without weighing down the story or hitting the reader over (cont) 6d
vivastory the head. This one was a pleasant surprise & yet another great selection from Aardvark, 6d

Wow. This book was dark and gritty and violent. But it was also heartbreaking and sad. I feel like there was a message in there about vengeance and how much it costs us to fight darkness. Such a great story. And it doesn‘t romanticize vampires. I will read more by this author. But first, I think I need to read a comedy or cozy mystery. lol

I didn't get any good pictures but I still wanted to record the amazing #silentbookclub I went to today, complete with adoptable rescue dogs! Needless to say, not a lot of reading was accomplished. ;)

ferskner @iread2much I hope so too! My dog doesn't allow me to be in the market but they were all sweethearts. 1w
iread2much @ferskner that is the best and worst thing about Akitas, they don‘t like other dogs (single sex pairings is the only recommendation) so I can never adopt other dogs - but that saves me from having like 7 big dogs 🐕 6d

A good old-fashioned vampire horror novel! With vampires that are dangerous monsters and not emotionally stunted pretty boys!

My enthusiasm for the monstrous monsters aside, Coffin Moon is an exceptional horror novel. Keith Rosson gives great care to developing his characters, which makes their pain all the more visceral.

This is the first book I've read by this author, but it will not be the last.

Received via #NetGalley.

I received this ARC from NetGalley for an honest review. This was overall an entertaining vampire horror/thriller. This takes place in the 70‘s, post Vietnam War. The time is important as our main character Duane Minor is a veteran, working at his in-laws bar. He has some mistakes in his past, but is working to be a good husband and guardian to his wife‘s niece Julia.⬇️

Nessavamusic His wife‘s parents make some poor decisions that throw them all into a gritty violent vampire story. This is a story of revenge, family, trauma and grief. Not an easy read, but I did like Minor & Julia a lot. Our antagonist also has an interesting journey as well. A very different vampire tale, I don‘t want to spoil anything, but the closest comps to this would be Blood Like Mine by Stuart Neville and Razorblade Tears by S. A. Cosby. 4mo
Nessavamusic If you are a fan of those stories I would definitely recommend this one. 4.5⭐️ 4mo

Already impressed by the poetic grittiness of Rosson‘s prose.
