To Say Nothing of the Dog
To Say Nothing of the Dog | Connie Willis
From Connie Willis, winner of multiple Hugo and Nebula Awards, comes a comedic romp through an unpredictable world of mystery, love, and time travel...Ned Henry is badly in need of a rest. He's been shuttling between the 21st century and the 1940s searching for a Victorian atrocity called the bishop's bird stump. It's part of a project to restore the famed Coventry Cathedral, destroyed in a Nazi air raid over a hundred years earlier. But then Verity Kindle, a fellow time traveler, inadvertently brings back something from the past. Now Ned must jump back to the Victorian era to help Verity put things right--not only to save the project but to prevent altering history itself. From the Paperback edition.

This was a difficult rating for me with many contributing factors to the final decision. In short though, I enjoyed the concept of the story, I enjoyed the trip to Victorian England. Characterisation was particularly good, Princess Arjumand being hilarious, along with Lady Shrapnal, I also adored Verity. However, it was too long winded for me, 20 hours in audiobook form, and it just seemed overly detailed without this adding anything beneficial.

Cathythoughts Sounds a bit long alright ... 2y
Bronte_Chintz @Cathythoughts It really has some great parts and it‘s a great concept. I just kept finding I zoned out a lot. 2y
LizBurton Connie Willis is usually better in print than audio, in my opinion. That way, I can give the characters their voices, and hers are usually so well done that's important. 2y
Bronte_Chintz @LizBurton I have wondered whether listening to it in audio was the wisest choice. With it being quite long I wanted to make sure I read it in time and audio gave me the freedom to listen to it whilst doing other tasks as well. Maybe I‘ll retry her in print. 2y

I‘m more than halfway thru this right now and I am enjoying it. I think it‘s funny that is labeled Sci-fi because it‘s not your typical sci-fi book but because it involves time travel I guess that‘s why it‘s called that. It‘s made me laugh and the audiobook has been super enjoyable to listen to. The narrator does a good job with different voice I think. Princess Arjumand (the cat) cracks me up!!!!! Has anyone else read this book?

This one wasn't for me. I would have bailed if it wasn't a pick for book club. It was too long and didn't hold my interest in many parts. But I really enjoyed the mystery and I loved the character of Verity and most of the scenes she was in.

This was a funny story however it was too long and too detailed. I found myself laughing a lot but the author beats you over the head with the funny parts and then they‘re just annoying. It was nice to read sci-fi where the world wasn‘t ending, I just wish I liked it more. It was a 20 hour and 58 min audiobook.

mabell Wow that is a long audiobook! 😳 2y
riversong153 @mabell it was! I don‘t think it was worth the listen. It was entertaining in some parts but there was waaayyy to much detail that was unnecessary. 2y
mabell Considering it's about double my average audiobook length, that would be tough to get through - congrats on finishing! 2y

riversong153 @mabell thanks. i had cookies today to celebrate. I‘m not supposed to be eating treats but...rewards lol (edited) 2y
Bronte_Chintz I‘m about 2 hours into the audiobook that is shockingly long, but I get what you mean about being bashed over the head with the funny parts. Sticking with it though! 2y
Sarz I'm struggling with it! It's so long and not quite holding my interest. 2y
riversong153 @Sarz are you doing print or audio? 2y
Sarz @riversong153 ebook, which isn't my preference but all I could access. It doesn't help that some of the text is jumbled on the page - really weird! 2y
riversong153 @Sarz i know....I started with the ebook from my library and then switched to audio. I couldn‘t handle it. 2y

Willis in general and this book in particular have been hugely recommended to me. I guess I just don't get the hype? I was promised witty hilarity with brilliant plot and I was mostly bored and found it contrived. #twostars #unpopularopinion

Briary I remember trying to read this long ago, couldn't get into it at all. Glad to hear I wasn't the only one 😅 2y
esurient @Briary Oh, good, now I don't feel so alone. This seems to be a very polarizing book, and I had mostly only heard from people who just adored it. 2y
esurient (This read is probably on the line between a pan and a so-so for me. I recognize that it wasn't a bad book, I just didn't like it. I'm siding this on the pan side on the grounds that I have utterly no urge to read another book by this author.) 2y

2/2.5⭐️⭐️.💫This Book really dragged for me, especially the 1st half 😑.The 2nd half was a lot better, but not enough to make up for the lag of the entire book. I just really really wanted it to end. The comedic aspect was pretty dull, & barely kicked in until the 2nd half where it just was waving at you like an awkward distant cousin -& If I hear the phrase “Bishop‘s Bird Stump” one more time 😳🔪💣⛓⚔️... yup annoying AF😑

benchley1 Oh thank heavens! I tried twice to read it and just COULD NOT 2y
MiyakoBunny @benchley1 😳Right!? It was sooooooo exasperating 🤦🏻‍♀️ and exhausting to boot-by the end of it I thought I was the one afflicted w/time lag & seriously wishing I could borrow their time machine so I could‘ve never read this tiresome book 📖 to begin with lol 😆 2y

I gave up on two books before this came in for me at the library. Turns out I needed to time travel to 1888 and get involved in a complicated comedy of manners/mystery. This is quite different to the first book which was dark and compelling - this is much lighter in subject and quite funny. Really clever and full of literary allusions. I loved the time lag symptoms and Ned‘s attempts to catch the cat 😂

Libby1 You‘ve convinced me, @Centique ! 😃 2y
Centique @Libby1 oh good! It is a little slow in the first half, so a good one when you‘ve got a whole day to read. 2y

I am going with a book on my TBR for #timetravel. I have heard so many great things about it but I have to admit the cover blurb does nothing for me since it compares it to two books I did not like. #sizzlinsummerbooks

A fun and light-hearted time travel yarn, as well as a sandbox full of literary allusions. You'll have fun with this one, so long as you don't get too bogged down in the logic of time travel or the labyrinthine whodunnit. Besides, if you've read a book or two, you already know the butler did it.

Delightful. It helps if you've read "Three Men in a Boat" and a little Wodehouse, but it's not necessary. This is an Anglophiles dream of Oxford, butlers, Coventry Cathedral and Victorian mores. Dr. Who meets Jeeves. And jumble sales. There's also time travel, true love, and a very memorable cat and dog. If you need a distraction, I highly recommend this with a proper pot of tea and a dog and at least one cat within petting distance.

This one took awhile for me to get into, and that may be more me than the book. It was a slow build but a good read all the same. Just be prepared for it to go slow. The time travel part was well done because it wasn't perfect, there were definitely hitches so that made it more realistic. There were a lot of threads that made their way to a satisfactory end. It's also not too science fictiony for those who aren't a fan or want to try the genre.
