Just so sweet. A young couple in their first year of marriage, “adulting” 1920s style. Watching their pennies (have to have enough to pay their cook and housekeeper 😂), learning to handle disputes, navigating the ups and downs of daily living, and facing everything together with love and tenderness . A portrait of the first year of what will almost certainly be a happy marriage.

#PersephoneClub

Tamra 😅 😉 I would volunteer to watch my pennies to pay for domestic staff. 1mo
jlhammar Definitely see a happy marriage for those two. Wonderful review! 1mo
Aimeesue What a lovely floral background! 1mo

A rather sweet, happy book, about a young couple's engagement and first year, as they settle into marriage and domesticity. There are challenges and some exasperation along the way, but ultimately there's just so much warmth here. Quite lovely and charming.

#PersephoneClub

Tamra I feel like this is a great spring & summer read! 💛💚 1mo
jlhammar Lovely floral pattern 🌸 Yes, so much warmth - great way to describe it! 1mo

quietjenn FYI: the most recent house listing I found for Walpole Street. Just five million plus pounds, but the patio is already paved 😅 https://www.rightmove.co.uk/house-prices/details/england-129722033-19311835?s=26... 1mo
willaful Ooo, Vera Bradley! I have so many items in that pattern. 😂 1mo
Tamra @quietjenn whew 😅 1mo
LeahBergen Thank God it‘s paved. 😆 1mo
Cathythoughts Yes , warmth is the word 👍🏻🥰 and the house is only five million plus … a steal 😂 1mo
CarolynM Well if the paving‘s already done, that‘s quite a saving🤣 Nice review. 1mo

Delightful read! Sweet, charming, funny. Though a different time and place, it reminded me a bit of the play/movie Barefoot in the Park.

#PersephoneClub

willaful Yes! 1mo
LeahBergen I‘ve never seen Barefoot the Park. I must rectify that! 1mo
quietjenn Great comparison! I loved that movie when I was younger and should probably watch it again. 1mo

So sweet and charming. It evoked memories of my newlywed days, although I don‘t think I was ever quite such a goose as Felicity or my husband as ineffectual as Ian, and of our first house where we were very happily childless for a lot longer than the first year! But I can‘t imagine how we managed without a cook and a maid🤣🤣🤣

#PersephoneClub

Centique So difficult! We‘ll just have to have a local woman in a few mornings a week to do for us 😂😂 1mo
Tamra How did/do we manage?? 😅 I was thinking the same thing. Though I also don‘t relish the idea of managing “staff” either. 1mo
LeahBergen And we didn‘t have an allowance from my father, either. How did we survive?? 😆 Lovely review! 1mo

Cathythoughts Great review ❤️ How did we ever do it 😳😂 1mo
willaful The image that best sums up my husband and I is from an underground comic in which someone exclaims, “At last! Someone as wishy-washy as I am!“ 😂 So I definitely related. (edited) 1mo
quietjenn Modern life is so hard! At least you never had to worry about the servants drinking all your whiskey. 1mo

There is something so lovely about this house on Greenery Street and
the endearing young couple and their adventures in their first year of marriage. It‘s left me with a warm feeling, and brought up memories of different houses I‘ve lived in over the years. Another soothing Persephone read. ♥️♥️♥️ #Persephoneclub

Tamra Soothing - perfect descriptor. 😊 Somehow you just know all will be well. 1mo
Cathythoughts @Tamra Yes! All will be well, that‘s such a good feeling ♥️ 1mo
andrew61 Yes I look fondly on our first house Cathy and as our clutter expands exponentially frequently wish we were back there now the girls are slowly drifting to independence. 1mo

LeahBergen Ahh, what a lovely photo to go with your review! It made me very nostalgic for our first old house. 🥰 1mo

A gentle story of a young couple moving into the 1st married home. Felicity + Ian navigate the minor bumps in early life in their 'small' home (worth a look at Walpole St on which it's based!). I was happily esconsed in the small dramas so loved to finale abt Daphne.

Tamra “Small” in quotations is right! Doesn‘t sound small to me if you have room for domestic help. I read in a blog online #23 has been divided into units. 1mo
Cathythoughts Yes I‘d say not that ‘small‘ 😂 A gentle story 👍🏻 1mo
LeahBergen I actually Googled real estate on Walpole (Greenery) Street and would be very pleased to live there even at this “advanced“ point in our marriage. 😆 1mo
quietjenn Small dramas in not-actually-small homes. Lovely! 1mo

A novel of its time certainly, but it evokes a bittersweet nostalgia of early adulting & marriage. There are bits of insight and snort worthy humor that I can now appreciate having passed through that window.

I LOVED the first chapter! So relatable, except we spent 16 years (on a 5 year plan) in our first family home. 😂 I still miss it and wistfully drive by occasionally. #Persephoneclub

dabbe Adorable bookmark; is it made of felt? 🤩🤩🤩 1mo
Tamra @dabbe it is fabric. 😁 I bought two recently at an Indie bookstore. I love it when stores offer locally made goods. 1mo
dabbe @Tamra 😀🤩🤗 1mo

Tamra Lots of unrecognized privilege happening in it! 😏 1mo
LeahBergen We spent four years in our first house and I still drive by it, too. I also dream about it all the time! 😆 1mo
Tamra @LeahBergen yes! Couldn‘t you step right back in and it wouldn‘t feel like you ever left? We spent so long because we debated forever on the merits of remodeling to accommodate us, but it would have been a money & stress drain. It was a circa 1900 house. (edited) 1mo
Cathythoughts Great review. The houses we live in hold so many memories ♥️ haunting. 1mo

This was a charming and wryly witty story of a couple‘s first year of marriage and their first home. The author drew from memories of his own idyllic first year of marriage on “Greenery Street” (Walpole Street in London) and it made me so nostalgic for my first house after marriage. And just like the Greenery Street houses, we bought our old house from owners who were expecting their second child and needed to size up. 😆

#PersephoneClub

Tamra Exactly - so spot on! 😊 1mo

Cathythoughts Lovely review Leah ♥️ I‘ve only read 2 pages. I‘m still reading my IRL Bookclub book. There‘s something about that first house that pulls at the heartstrings ♥️ I‘m so looking forward to it. X 1mo
Cathythoughts Gorgeous picture! Look at those books 🥰 1mo
LeahBergen @Tamra I can see why Persephone Books recommends it as a newlywed gift! It has such a cheery outlook on young marriage. 1mo
LeahBergen @BarbaraBB I remember that you enjoyed this one! 1mo
LeahBergen @CarolynM It‘s a sweet little book! 1mo
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts Thanks, Cathy! How are you enjoying your bookclub book? 1mo
Cathythoughts I‘m enjoying it. Lady Tans Circle of Women. You did say you enjoyed others of hers. Yes, nearly finished it now , very good 👍🏻 (edited) 1mo
