Home sick thanks to the novel coronavirus BUT I‘ve got Jane Austen socks & I‘m all snuggled in with my equally sniffling kiddos, watching the new Persuasion— it‘s awful but fun to discuss why & just how terrible

Cinfhen Oh no😩hope you all feel better real quick 2w
StaceGhost @Cinfhen thank you! Us too! So far so good— just mildly annoying. Everyone has their vax but the baby is also getting molars so it really sucks for her 2w

#12booksof2022 July

I finally read Austen again, thanks to a group read invite from @Ann_Reads - and it saved my otherwise rather crappy July reading month. Austen is special and this was one of favorite reading experiences this year.

Ann_Reads Awesome! So glad you enjoyed it. Maybe you'll fit in another Austen in 2023? I still have Sense and Sensibility on my list. 🙂🙂🙂 1mo

Wow. Jane Austen is a legend. The power she holds over me is insane. I decided to annotate this book, and it was the best decision I‘ve made. Moving to the book, it was agonisingly slow, but that‘s what so great about it. I was screaming internally for most of the book, and honestly, I can‘t express to you how much I love this book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Jane Austen is definitely on her way to becoming my favourite author (if not already).

Persuasion is really one for the true fans, often too severe to be funny (and occasionally fat-shamey, by the by) and subtle in its treatment of quite dramatic turns. I wouldn‘t recommend starting out with this one, if you‘re new to Austen, but if you‘ve already read her others, you‘re well placed to give it a go. This is probably my third favorite Jane Austen book, after Northanger Abbey and Pride & Prejudice. I liked Anne Elliot, but her family was a mess! They don‘t deserve her. I saw the Netflix adaptation first and feel Richard E. Grant was perfect as the father. I continued with As The Wicked Watch on my #audiowalk today.

I liked it - but also wished the premise was handled a little differently. I wasn‘t exactly bored, but I also wasn‘t as interested as I thought I would be. Anne is quite Cinderella-like in my opinion. Surrounded by a wicked family that takes advantage of her, yet being herself of a deeply kind-hearted nature. And somehow that just makes her bland compared to other Austen heroines.

Just a brief public service announcement: The new Netflix version of Persuasion is awful! Anne's character is completely unlike the book. However, Sir Elliot is very funny in his displays of vanity. Anyone else have thoughts about this new version?

batsy Oof. I really disliked it because of the tone of it was all wrong. I have no idea why they thought of depicting Anne Elliott as a watered-down Bridget Jones. I thought Richard E. Grant nailed the character of Sir Elliott, though. It was a campy version of Sir Elliott but the only thing I liked about the movie 😆 5mo
DisneyFan Thanks for the PSA. I think I‘ve heard enough people say the same thing, so I will avoid it. 5mo

Finis. This is my second Austin novel that I have completed and faired much better than my first, Emma. Emma had the effect of disrepute and almost affected my to not read another Austin novel again. After admittedly watching and enjoying the Sanditon series and hearing of the release of Persuasion, I thought I would give Austin another chance, and I am very glad I did, the protagonist Anne has a tenderness one can‘t help finding admirable.

Kristin_Reads Persuasion is my favorite of all the Austen novels! 6mo

I‘m kind of an Austen slacker. This is only the second of her novels I‘ve read, even as I know only she has that special quietly elegant and playfully ambiguous nuance of expression. I adored Anne, the baron‘s humble disregarded middle daughter, trapped in manner; and I adored her variety of quiet strength. Of course I‘m following a long line here.

Andrea313 @Chrissyreadit I'm glad it was something you enjoyed! For me, and full disclosure, I have not watched it, my issues come from two places: the first is that Anne's quirky, quippy character bears no resemblance to the Anne of Austen's novel. And second, Persuasion is arguably her most somber, reflective work and the tone of the film disregards that entirely. I sort of wish the film's writers would have just created an original screenplay. 6mo
Chrissyreadit @Andrea313 that makes sense- when I see remakes I think of them as produced from different angles. I think because I read so many JA retellings I look at the films the same way. 6mo
Chrissyreadit I do appreciate your response though- I‘ve been genuinely confused. 6mo
RidgewayGirl @Chrissyreadit I love the novel and I thoroughly enjoyed the adaptation. 🤷🏻‍♀️ i enjoy seeing how a work is interpreted and find adaptations that hew too closely to the source material are often boring (BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice excepted). 6mo
Andrea313 @Chrissyreadit I love what you say about the film versions being similar in your mind to book re-tellings! I don't read many of those, and it could be why I prefer my films to stick more closely with the original. Since I'm on the fence about watching, will you tell me what you enjoyed most? Maybe I'll wind up going for it after all. 6mo
Chrissyreadit @Andrea313 to be fair these dais I “need” stuff to be lighter. In this version I enjoy the playful spirit- we get to see but is not obvious to anyone else. It presents Anne to me not as a “victim” but as someone who had her own growing to do - but in a playful less painful way than in JA‘s Persuasion. That does not take away from the original but rather gives me options on how to be entertained. 6mo

re-read this in anticipation of the movie coming out soon. Wentworth‘s growth as a person/man and love letter is still top tier. Anne is still not necessarily one of my favorites of Austen‘s characters but there is much to be said for Anne and her growth as well. This one has less subtle social commentary than her other books but still a goodie.

My thoughts on the new Persuasion.

#PemberLittens @sprainedbrain

sprainedbrain Love this! ❤️ 6mo
Pip2 So my first Austen book was Emma. I was not a fan and now my second is oddly Persuasion, which is so far, much better than Emma. I have not seen the 1995 Persuasion or the new one but plan on seeing both after reading the book. It sounds like I started out with Austen‘s two least favorable novels… Which one is her best in your opinion? 6mo
jenniferw88 @Pip2 my fave is Northanger Abbey, but everyone has their own list of favourites. Jane herself said of Emma "I am going to take a heroine whom no one but myself will much like", so you're not alone in disliking Emma. 6mo
NovelGirl82 Unpopular opinion, but Emma is actually my favorite Austen novel. I‘m definitely one of the few who that is true for, though. I‘m glad to hear that you like the new Persuasion. I‘ve been looking forward to watching it, but was sad to see all of the unfavorable reviews. 6mo

Not even halfway through watching this new Netflix adaptation and my first and foremost thought: what is this nonsense? (And: Will I be able to finish this?!)
Granted I‘m a little precious/protective because this is my favorite Austen novel (and one of my all time fave books) - but this is not a good movie imho.
What does everyone else think???

DGRachel I can‘t bring myself to watch it, yet. Persuasion is my favorite Austen and just the previews make me want to throw the book through my TV screen and cancel my Netflix subscription. That said - if others enjoy it, awesome. I‘m not criticizing anyone for it. 7mo
Liatrek @DGRachel Agree 100% I just can‘t watch it. I hate that it‘s at the top of my suggested viewing and I even get a glimpse of the trailer again. I sooo wanted a good adaption 😢 7mo
Graywacke I‘m reading Persuasion now for the first time. I‘ve heard some older adaptations were very good. But I‘ve only heard worry about this latest one. 7mo

ravenlee It‘s my favorite Austen, too, and the previews just make me cringe. I‘ve seen nothing but poor reviews so far. Why can‘t we have nice things? 7mo
Leftcoastzen Someone else on Litsy posted this link I think but in case you didn‘t see it.I don‘t think I will even try to watch it https://lithub.com/from-fleabag-to-persuasion-the-rise-of-the-mussy-haired-self-... 7mo
LiteraryinLawrence Thanks for sharing that article @Leftcoastzen 7mo
DGRachel @Liatrek @ravenlee @Leftcoastzen @LiteraryinLawrence @Eyelit One of the things that concerns me is that this adaptation will be the first experience some people have of Persuasion and Anne, and to see how much just the preview alters her character hurts my heart. It does such a disservice to the author and the book. 7mo
MadelineMcCrae Persuasion is also my favorite. Have you seen the 1995 movie? If so, what did you think? 7mo
Eyelit @DGRachel @Liatrek I think I should have listened to my gut when I saw the trailer 😆 I can see why some might like it - but for me it missed the mark completely in tone and the portrayal of Anne 😩 (edited) 7mo
Eyelit @ravenlee yes! Why can‘t we have nice things?!? 7mo
Eyelit @Leftcoastzen that article was great! thanks for sharing! 7mo
Leftcoastzen @Eyelit you‘re welcome! It‘s been a long time since I‘ve read the book, thinking I‘ll reread it!😁 7mo
Eyelit @DGRachel I agree with you and do wonder how people will react if this is their first experience with Austen and then be utterly surprised if/when they try to read the books (if they even get to that point or if they‘ll just write her off (as so many have in the past) as a embittered romance writer) 7mo
Eyelit @MadelineMcCrae the ‘95 adaptation is my favorite (maybe because it was the first adaptation I saw for Persuasion) I felt that the subdued tone and the wonderfully understated performances by the two leads were fab. I have mixed feelings about the 2007 version… the cast is wonderful but I really hated all the looks directly into the camera 😅 7mo
Eyelit @Leftcoastzen I think I need a reread to get this adaptation out of my brain completely 😅 7mo
SamAnne I‘m starting to feel like I need to hate watch this…… 6mo
julesG I watched it last night. And I'm not sure what to think. I'm sure this very modern approach will make Austen interesting for the younger people, but all in all my conclusion is: The book was better! 6mo
Librarybelle My gut reaction, based solely on the trailer, is I‘ll hate it. That is so not Anne!! But, I also feel like I cannot say anything until I actually watch it…but am I really ready to do that??? I‘m a firm believer if it brings someone to the original subject matter, then it does have a service. But, come on, that‘s not Anne! @Eyelit @DGRachel @Liatrek @ravenlee @Leftcoastzen @LiteraryinLawrence @MadelineMcCrae @SamAnne @julesG 6mo
Mindelan I‘m not sure what they were trying to accomplish there. It felt like someone trying to write a modern retelling, but still set in the regency period? They cut out so much of the subtlety that makes Austen‘s work good, and the modern slang was weird. If they wanted to modernize it, they should have just done it. The actress they chose for Mary would have been great as an influencer of some kind. 6mo
Eyelit @SamAnne yeah, hate watching it may be the best mindset for this one 😅 6mo
ravenlee @Eyelit @DGRachel @Liatrek @Leftcoastzen @LiteraryinLawrence @MadelineMcCrae @SamAnne @julesG @Librarybelle the article was very interesting! And I agree that bringing someone to reading the books has value. I‘ve been thinking about a screenwriter I saw once talking about adapting books (it was The Count of Monte Cristo) and how you can‘t write the book - it‘s already been done and done well or they wouldn‘t be adapting it in the first place. 👇🏻 6mo
ravenlee And I get that argument, I really do. You can‘t just pull all the dialogue out of a book and film it. But if the idea is to read the book and then write a film version, I have to wonder who involved in Persuasion actually read the book, because they missed all the important stuff. Or did someone just use a synopsis and character list? It sounds like a student writing their essay from Cliffs Notes instead of the book. 6mo
Eyelit @julesG I agree that this a very modern approach - and I‘m all for that if it stays true to the essence of the source material (it doesn‘t have to be exactly as it was on the page to do that either) - but this is not Anne Elliot. I don‘t know who this character is but she‘s not remotely Anne Elliot 😩 and yes, the book was better 😆 (edited) 6mo
Eyelit @Mindelan omg Mary basically stole every scene she was in. One of the few characters who was true to what the essence of the character was in the book (if a little off with the language ha ha) 6mo
Eyelit @ravenlee that was my thought when watching this. Did ANYONE actually read the book at all? Cause you‘re right, it feels like some got the cliff notes and went from there… it also feels like they saw the popularity of the 2020 Emma and said ‘I can do that‘ - and just kind of keyboard smashed their way through the writing of this script 6mo
julesG I was wondering whether I just didn't remembered the book correctly. It's been a few years (cough, decades) since I read it. @Eyelit @Mindelan Yes, Mary the influencer would have been a great take on it. I agree, a modern retelling might have been better. Would have made me cringe less for sure. 6mo
DGRachel @Eyelit Yes! I‘m fine with modernizing classics (I think Clueless is fun) as long as they don‘t pretend to be anything else. Based on the previews, that‘s what it feels like they did here. It‘s a modern script masquerading as a period piece. And yes-who is that Anne? That‘s a Caroline Bingley in Anne Elliot skin! 6mo
Mindelan @Eyelit Agreed! When Anne twisted her ankle, I paused it and told my spouse “this is not cannon, but I am very interested to see how Mary reacts” and I was not disappointed 😂 6mo
MadelineMcCrae @Eyelit I‘m glad someone else loves the 1995 version! It‘s my go to comfort movie ☺️ (edited) 6mo

Persuasion | Jane Austen

@JaneAustenMeme coming in with the only review I need. I see divided reviews generally here on Litsy; anyone wanna weigh in? I welcome the debate! #PemberLittens

ravenlee I thought initial previews looked bad, then I saw the longer preview a few days ago and it looks even worse. I‘m so disappointed. 7mo
Andrea313 @ravenlee Same here on being really disappointed. To be fair, I haven't watched it yet, but the trailers I've seen are leaving me legit angry. Will we never get the Persuasion we deserve?! Even the '95 version, which I think is the best we've got, and I know some folks love, kills me with the weird circus ending. Like, I will never not be completely taken out of it when Wentworth gazes into Anne's eyes....while a stilt-walker passes by. 💀💀💀 7mo
ravenlee I like the 2007 version well enough. I don‘t know the 1995 one, and now I‘m really hesitant to look for it! I get that it‘s a very introspective novel, so much of it takes place inside Anne‘s head, and it must be very challenging to film that, but either find a way to make that work or for all that‘s holy stop mangling it! 7mo

ravenlee The 2007 version works for me until the kiss at the end…and they‘re reaching…still reaching…Anne is gasping like a fish on land…not there yet… 7mo
Andrea313 @ravenlee I like the 2007 one just fine, but I agree about the ending! And I don't care for Anne's asides to the camera. The '95 one is perfectly lovely, I'd definitely encourage you to check it out! But it never felt like "IT" for me; I'm still waiting on an adaptation that fully captures all that's beautiful about that book. But yeah, it's so internal and so much about mood...maybe it can't be done! 7mo
Liatrek This is my fav Austen book and all the previews and trailers just turn me off from watching. I‘ve seen both versions and agree they don‘t feel as perfect as say the P&P movies. I was really hoping for a great adaption to my favorite book. 7mo
eeclayton I watched it and didn't like it. Everything I adore about Anne is missing from the movie. 6mo
Eyelit Yes! I saw one review that was basically like ‘I am all agony, no hope‘ and after watching I completely agree 🤣 6mo
Andrea313 @Eyelit "All agony, no hope" I am dead. ??? After the reviews I've read, I'm not sure I'll be able to watch it. 6mo
Linsy Ugh, that's too bad!!! I'll still watch, but maybe having low expectations will help. 6mo

Will you be watching the new Persuasion this weekend?

I hope to fit it in the schedule. It‘s my second fav book of Austen‘s.

Ruthiella I won‘t be able to but I would love to know what you think of it! 7mo
CrowCAH @Ruthiella I‘ll be sure to write some sort of review here on Litsy. 7mo
