War and Peace
War and Peace: Translated by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky | Leo Tolstoy
Often called the greatest novel ever written, War and Peace is at once an epic of the Napoleonic Wars, a philosophical study, and a celebration of the Russian spirit. Tolstoys genius is seen clearly in the multitude of characters in this massive chronicleall of them fully realized and equally memorable. Out of this complex narrative emerges a profound examination of the individuals place in the historical process, one that makes it clear why Thomas Mann praised Tolstoy for his Homeric powers and placed War and Peace in the same category as the Iliad: To read him . . . is to find ones way home . . . to everything within us that is fundamental and sane.

So I completely understand why this is an enduring classic - the themes of love and conflict and the question of man‘s existence are obviously universal, and the military history detail is incredible.

However.

This is also SUPER BORING, I‘m not gonna lie. I don‘t even care if that makes me sound shallow, I spent the whole time wanting Tolstoy to stop droning on about The Forces of History and get back to the characters already.

1. I‘ve too many books that have stood unread on my shelves for 5 and 10 yrs. I immediately thought of the tagged one.

2. From cover to cover, none. But I have read bits and pieces of my romance novels several times.

3. On my physical tbr between 100-200 books, I don‘t keep count

4. “Becoming” by Michelle Obama. I don‘t give exact ratings, but would recommend this

At the beginning of May I got hurt at work and knew I was going to be off work for a while so I wanted to read something that I normally wouldn‘t have the time to. Many years ago I got started on this beautiful book and I got halfway through but work constraints stopped me from finishing it. Well I finally got done with it I‘ve read many places that this was the greatest novel ever written my Litsy friends I‘m going to agree with that opinion.

LeahBergen I hope you‘re healed up now! I read this book over the course of a year (several years ago) and yes, it‘s most definitely worth it. 😍 3mo

Third time is a charm right? I have tried to read this book 2 other times. The first time, I think I was too young. The second time was about a year ago. I then read an article on the main characters to make sure I was keeping them all straight in my mind and accidentally read some spoilers so I had to put the book down. It‘s time to pick it back up again. Here are some quotes I liked from today‘s reading.

Finally finished! Took just under a month, and while I could have done without all the battle scenes, I can see why it‘s considered a classic. Wish I had read it in a class setting through. I feel like I would have gotten more out of it.

The amount of people at work this morning who commented on how much they loved this book was questionable… both because I‘m 600 pages in and struggling to not just put it down and have that many people really read this book?? But I did get about 200 pages read already today. Hoping I can knock out another 150 tonight!

Palimpsest I‘ll admit I‘ve never read it. :) 7mo
C.Perone Not to be repetitive--but I Loved this book!! I've read it twice, once in high school and once in college. Both times for a War and Peace class. I definitely don't think I would have made it through on my own, so kudos to you! I think reading as part of a class helps keep the million characters and their nicknames straight; and to have the war parts summarized, if war strategy is not your thing. I hope you find pleasure in it 😊😊 7mo
Kimberlone Other than a few short stories in college, I managed to get a lit degree without reading any of the Russian epics. Although I would love to get to War and Peace someday I doubt it will be anytime soon (due to the length). Similar feelings about Dickens (who I also managed to mostly avoid in college). 7mo
See All 7 Comments
hjreviews @C.Perone unfortunately war strategy is not my thing 😅 so I find myself checking with spark notes to make sure I understand what happened. 7mo
C.Perone @hjreviews Good for you, using Spark notes--it's a densely packed novel. Again, without a class I would've just skipped the war parts entirely 😂 7mo

Finally finished! I am not great at long books. Took over a month! One book!! I enjoyed this so much more than Anna Karenina. Much more complex characters. Tolstoy writes men much better than women who are either saints or devils. His views on war and historical heroes are very interesting. It would be interesting to get his thoughts on current politics. The philosophy section at end I could have skipped. Cruel to put at end of 1300 page book.

Tamra I really enjoyed Anna K., so maybe I need to give this a shot! That and Crime & Punishment. I need to find a good narrator though. 7mo
Nebklvr @Tamra I enjoyed Crime & Punishment. 7mo

People keep asking me what‘s happening in the book and since I can‘t pronounce half of the names correctly, they‘ve all been given nicknames to make up for it. Coming up with the nicknames might be my favorite part of reading this book...

Naj I remember reading Anna Karenina, and some characters had two names there – the full name and the nickname, not that it helped one bit. Isn't that the case here? 7mo

CrowCAH @Nebklvr yes, I can‘t wait to watch it. My motivation was the musical movie that came out some years back. 7mo
Nebklvr @CrowCAH I haven‘t watched any as I like to read the book first. Of course, I spend a lot of time whining and not so much reading....hence still reading a book I started in January! 7mo
KendylChamberlain Are you not enjoying it? Is it a tough read? I have been wanting to do some of these classics as well. 7mo
Nebklvr @KendylChamberlain It isn‘t hard, just long. I have to retrain my brain. At 350 pages, it thinks it should be done! If you like lots of family drama, you will like Anna Karenina. I am more interested in historical events so like War and Peace better cause lots of Napoleon and war. That sounds bad but I have enough family drama without reading it. Lots of good classics out there! 7mo

Circa 1970...
My mother was dead worried about me.
All I read were Archie comics.
I didn't want to read anything else.

Then I saw this book in the library.
The 70s were all about Peace and my parents lived through a War. What's not to like about this title?
I picked it up, took it home and that evening Mom saw me reading War and Peace while Archie was sidelined to my night table.

If mothers can die of shock. 😏
Archie to Leo in one fell swoop!😁
