Small Boat
Small Boat | Vincent Delecroix
November 2021: an inflatable dinghy carrying migrants from France to the UK capsizes in the Channel, causing the deaths of 27 people on board. How and why did it happen? Despite receiving numerous calls for help, the French authorities wrongly told the migrants they were in British waters and had to call the British authorities for help. By the time rescue vessels arrived on the scene, all but two of the migrants had died. The narrator of Delecroixs fictional account of the events is the woman who took the calls. Accused of failing in her duty, she refuses to be held more responsible than others for this disaster. Why should she be more responsible than the sea, than the war, than the crises behind these tragedies? A shocking, moral tale of our times, Small Boat reminds us of the power of fiction to illuminate our darkest crimes.

In the canal between France and the UK a boat with immigrants have sunk causing the death of 27 immigrants. On the French side the woman who took the calls are being questioned by the police and she is not prepared to take on any more blame than the rest of us since she “didn‘t force them to leave”

Is she a representation of all of us? And the fatigue of ever more immigrant stories? Is it worse since she was a woman and we expect more nurturing

AnneCecilie from women? Is it worse since she‘s a mother? And once you realize what‘s on the cover, you can‘t unsee it 1d
BarbaraBB Such poignant questions. This book really stuck with me 22h

A very thought provoking 122 page book about an inflatable dinghy filled with migrants trying to cross the English Channel. Parts 1 and 3 are narrated by the coastguard agent who is in communication with someone on the boat, and part 2 describes what the people on the boat are actually going through. Short listed for the International Booker, brilliantly written, highly recommend.

Ruthiella Sounds intense. 😬 6d
Lesliereadsalot Yes, can‘t stop thinking about it. @Ruthiella 6d
Tamra Haven‘t read this yet, but I recently watched Stateless on Netflix re: refugee & Australian refugee detention center workers. Terrible tole on all sides. 😕 Inspired by true stories. 6d

A small, inflatable boat capsizes between France and England resulting in the deaths of 27 people. The French woman who took their distress calls is being interrogated after recordings of those conversations were found severely lacking. However she struggles with whether she is more to blame than anyone else for causing them to get in the boat in the first place., This is one of those books I will be thinking about for a really long time.

Tomorrow the winner of the #InternationalBooker prize will be announced. I managed to read 5 out of 6 of them (I didn‘t read Heart Lamp yet).

I have especially enjoyed Perfection, Under the Eye of the Big Bird and On the Calculation of Volume I but my absolute favorite is Small Boat. I hope it‘ll win the prize tomorrow.

Do you have a book you root for?

Bookwormjillk I haven't read any yet, but I did take an online quiz that said Under The Eye of the Big Bird is the one I'll like best so I'm rooting for that one. 2w
AnneCecilie I‘ve read 4 and I‘m hoping for either Calculation or Small Boat (edited) 2w
Lesliereadsalot Waiting for Small Boat on order at my library! I also too the online quiz and it also came out Under the Eye of the Big Bird. 2w

Jas16 Impressive! I have only read one of them but it was the one you are rooting for. 2w
Gissy I‘m always behind in my readings but I own one book and ordered another one. I will read them anyway 🤷🏽‍♀️I wish I could have more time to read and wish I could read faster. But that not my reality, they are waiting for me 😄 2w
BarbaraBB @Bookwormjillk @Lesliereadsalot I had high expectations for The Eye of the Big Bird but it fell a bit short to me 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2w
BarbaraBB @AnneCecilie I would be happy with Calculation too. I already read the second book and fortunately they have all been translated in Dutch already! 2w
BarbaraBB @Jas16 Good choice 😉. The longlist was very good this year - and lots of short books! 2w
BarbaraBB @Gissy You always read the good ones ❤️ 2w
AnneCecilie @BarbaraBB I have read all 5 of the Calculation books and is waiting on the next one. 2w
BarbaraBB @AnneCecilie Are they all so good? 2w
AnneCecilie I think so 2w
sarahbarnes I didn‘t get ahold of copies of these as fast as I wanted to, but I‘m excited to read the rest of the short list soon, including the winner. 1w
BarbaraBB @sarahbarnes I need to read the winner too, I am very curious about it! 1w

Starting a new book. I have four left for the International Booker Award long list.

This one, oddly, is not available as an ebook on Kindle in the US. I bought my copy from Bookshop.org - didn‘t know they sold ebooks!

willaful I didn't know that either. 2w
TheBookHippie I‘m slowly trying to just get ebooks from there! It‘s new! 2w

sarahbarnes I really want to read this but I don‘t love ebooks. I keep hoping it will show up in print in the US soon…I suspect it may win the prize this year. 2w
Graywacke @sarahbarnes you can buy hardcopies online. Try Blackwells. ?? 2w
Graywacke @willaful @TheBookHippie I think BookShop.org will become my ebook go to for the foreseeable future. I‘m happy to get away from Kindle (and other deranged corporations) 2w
willaful @Graywacke I got the impression you can only read their ebooks on their app, is that the case? I don't want to buy anything I can't read on an ereader. :-( 2w
Graywacke @willaful I don‘t know. (I‘ve only tried their app on my iPhone.) 2w
willaful @Graywacke Thanks, I didn't see the FAQ. 2w

Based on a real event where 27 migrants drowned in the Channel because the British couldn't get to them in time and the French wouldn't help, even while the boat was still in French waters. A semi-stream-of-consciousness narrative where the French navy emergency dispatcher tries to justify her actions and her words, refusing to bear the collective guilt and responsibility of society. Powerful and uncomfortable. #InternationalBooker #Booker

BarbaraBB Very uncomfortable indeed. One of my favorites for the prize! 3w
Suet624 Oh gosh. I didn‘t know that‘s what the book is about. But of course I have to read it. 3w
Graywacke I‘ve heard a ton of praise for this. Looking forward to it. 3w
