The Expendable Man | Dorothy B. Hughes

Pickpick

Once I started this I couldn‘t put it down and read it feverishly in a day. I want to read more Hughes immediately - one of the best mysteries I‘ve read and the arc of the story expertly crafted. I was on the edge of my seat until the end. A great #14Books14Weeks read.

And Then There Were None | Agatha Christie

From my #14Books14Weeks stack - an entertaining mystery and somehow my first Christie. There is a fair amount of problematic language in here (and apparently some of it had been taken out of this edition 😳) so I don‘t know if I‘d read another book of hers, but the storyline was very clever and I can see where she gets her reputation for mystery writing!

BookmarkTavern What a great one to start with! These all are very much of their time. If I remember correctly, this is one of the worst ones when it comes to racist language, so I‘d recommend giving another one a try. 15h
sarahbarnes @BookmarkTavern that‘s very true. Do you have another one you really liked? 15h
BookmarkTavern Yes! Her two most famous detectives are Hercule Poirot and Miss Jane Marple. My favorite Poirot novels are Murder on the Orient Express and The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. Miss Marple books, my favorites are The Body in the Library and Sleeping Murder. 15h

When Toto & his human Dorothy are swept away in a tornado, he was not expecting a land of magic, political feuds, & revolution. Being a Good Dog was going to get him taken away by Animal Control, so it‘s time to see what a Bad Dog can do.

I laughed out loud so much. A modernized retelling, poking fun @ a lot of tech bro culture & far right wing masculinity, while also providing loving references to the wide spread cultural impact of Oz.🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗

These are just so sweet. Cozy mysteries with anthropomorphic animals as the characters - I've enjoyed the first two & will definitely finish the series.

Cushla is tying to juggle so much from her alcoholic mother,to assisting the family of a student when his father is severely beaten while living near Belfast during the Troubles. Adding an affair with an older, married man creates even more stress. The affair is more icky than romantic and I‘d have preferred it have less of a focus but I felt such a sense of dread wondering which of the balls she was juggling would drop first. #14books14weeks 10
