Crook Manifesto: A Novel | Colson Whitehead
post image

I‘m a bit late posting, but here‘s the shelf I‘m currently choosing from and my #bookspin and #doublespin. I‘ve started Crook, and I‘m enjoying it. Ray Carney is a fun character. I feel lucky to have found the #nyrb Simenon used because I think @vivastory said his books are out of print with them rn. It will be my first by him. Lots more to choose from if I enjoy it. 😁 Otherwise, I‘ll see where the month takes me!

Cinfhen Great looking shelf 😁 4w
TheAromaofBooks Yay!! Enjoy!! 4w

Pickpick

The past is never settled in this unsettling novel by Magda Szabo.
The murder of young Henriette in WWII has a lasting effect on all of the three families that had been peacefully living closely together in Budapest until the. Her death is symbolic for all that happens in the book during the war and the communist period afterwards. In their complicated attempts to save one another, the characters are just as likely to destroy one another. ⬇️

BarbaraBB I have now read three of her books and all are fantastic. My favorite is 2mo
Ruthiella Awesome! I still need to read her. 2mo

vivastory @BarbaraBB I haven't read it. I received it last week in my NYRB order. Definitely looking forward to it. 2mo
batsy This was a pick for me, too! I think I prefer Iza's Ballad a bit more (these are the only two I've read). 2mo

#WeeklyForecast 29/23

Another #NYRB for #FoodAndLit and two light reads. I am kind of enjoying The Gifted School and kind of hating The Worst Kind of Want. No final verdict though, I am in the midst of both.

Cinfhen Funny, I kind of hated Gifted School and kind of liked 3mo
Cinfhen Keep me posted 😘 3mo
squirrelbrain That‘s so funny, Cindy! @Cinfhen (edited) 3mo

Cinfhen It really is funny but that‘s how it goes sometimes @squirrelbrain 🤪 3mo
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen Ha! I can see why you hated The Gifted School. I guess they are both not very good and depending on the mood we‘re in while reading them we can stand them more or less 😂 2mo
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen Just posted my review of The worst kind of want. The worst 😂😂 2mo

This basically is just the story of a young single mother, set in the first year after her baby is born. She struggles with combining motherhood and work, she has to redefine her position towards her parents and she meets a man. Nothing much happens but it is so Japanese. It feels like magic.

#NYRB #Roll100 #Booked2023 #SetInTheMountains #192025 #1980

Cinfhen The Japanese books never disappoint!! 😍 3mo
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen Never 😉 3mo

#WeeklyForecast 28/23

With the awesome discussion about Yellowface still in progress I‘ll be starting the next #CampLitsy23 read. We‘ve already got three winners in a row so I have high expectations of our fourth read (tagged).
First I have to finish yet another Lennon, super short stories which I am loving!
If time allows (my new career is demanding 😊) I‘ll start the #NYRB for #Booked23 and #Roll100.

Cinfhen Glad to hear you‘re busy! Have a wonderful week ❤️😘 3mo
squirrelbrain I‘ve just pulled HBB off the shelf to read too - have a great week Barbara! 3mo
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen @squirrelbrain You too, friends 😘 3mo

Chain-Gang All-Stars: A Novel | Adjei-Brenyah, Nana K

Crazy #bookhaul day y‘all! I‘ve got two official #CampLitsy23 choices, Romantic and Birnam; two from the longlist, Chain (#aardvark pick) plus Unfortunates nominated by @MicheleinPhilly , who steered me right with Chrysalis; and Moon from #botm, another nominee!

Excited for Link‘s new short story collection. PLUS they had someone‘s lifetime #nyrb collection pristine as used books at the library!! I didn‘t have long but chose 4! 99 cents each! 🤯

Ruthiella Wow! The NYRB haul is awesome! I love it when the library sale delivers gems like that. 5mo
MicheleinPhilly Nice! Excellent haul! 5mo
squirrelbrain Wow - amazing! Camp is so bad / good for our TBR lists! ❤️ 5mo

batsy What a haul! Those NYRBs 😍 5mo
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I wish you could‘ve been with me to browse them!! Too many to choose from and too little time to read the blurbs! You definitely would‘ve taken some back! 😁💜 (edited) 5mo
Megabooks @Cinfhen thanks, and I just realized I never shared my last BD haul! 5mo
Megabooks @batsy you would‘ve died too! They were just too perfect! 5mo

Angel | Elizabeth Taylor

Mehso-so

I loved the beginning of this. Taylor creates a brilliant character you love to hate in Angel Deverell. At age 15, Angel has a bad day at school, takes to her bed, and writes a terrible novel. That the public loves. Once Angel became a rich adult, though, I lost interest. This was an April #Roll100 that I got off my shelf! #nyrb

PuddleJumper 🎉🎉 5mo
BarbaraBB Interesting. I mostly love Taylor but haven‘t read this one. 5mo

Irretrievable | Theodor Fontane

Pickpick

I loved this #nyrb novel from the late 1800s. It‘s the story of a failing marriage in a great setting - the couple‘s beautiful home overlooks the sea in the border region between Germany and Denmark. Fontane writes beautifully and I thoroughly enjoyed this. I‘m sure I wouldn‘t have picked this up without #roll100

Bailedbailed

I am not going to finish this one. It is so long and it feels as if I‘ve read this story a thousand times before. I am being very critical about what I‘ve been reading lately. I am reading a lot but nothing really memorable. I think I should take a break from contemporary American/English fiction for a while but I probably can‘t! #ToB23

sarahbarnes Ugh. I haven‘t been able to motivate myself to read this one. I‘m sorry about the lackluster reading lately. 8mo
Cinfhen Another great photo 🤩I totally understand your #ReadingFrustration 8mo

Jas16 Oh no! This is my TOB book! I, too, haven‘t been loving what I‘ve been reading lately so maybe I will put off picking this up for a week or two. 8mo
BarbaraBB @sarahbarnes @Jas16 I can understand why you‘d put it off but many people did enjoy it so you can just ignore me too if you want 😊 8mo
merelybookish Maybe time to read a #1001 or #nyrb selection. I get jaded if I read too much contemporary fiction too. Helps to mix in some other eras! And the general consensus seems to be that this year's #tob short list is kinda uninspired. 8mo
batsy I have zero motivation to read this one, too. And I concur about getting jaded with contemporary American litfic. I've been reading Plato's dialogues as a cure 😆 And like with Die, My Love there's always something unexpected to be found amidst translated works. 8mo
Cortg I can get bored with books if I don‘t mix it up. I need to read different genres, authors, etc. 8mo
jlhammar I support your choice! With all of the ToB books I have remaining, including this one, my plan is to be kind of ruthless. If I feel early on that it will be a so-so at most, I‘m bailing. 8mo
Megabooks I know we‘ve been talking about this, and it‘s funny that we‘re all going in different directions to read new books. @Cinfhen is reading romance, you had some books in translation and speculative fiction I think, and I‘m reading business books about the entertainment industry. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ I did start this though. I like that it‘s set in Asia rather that the US/Europe. Thanks for sending it, B! 8mo
squirrelbrain We should all bail more - it‘s good for us! #toomanybookstoolittletime 7mo
BookwormM Oh no I have an ARC of this 7mo
Ruthiella Agree with everyone who says to put it aside and read what excites you now. Maybe a few months or even years down the line it will be the right book at the right time. I think we‘re all suffering from TOB fatigue this year. 7mo
Hooked_on_books It‘s always good to shake up your reading so things don‘t get stale. And you‘re missing nothing by bailing on this one. There are some wonderful chapters in it, but overall I thought it was a missed opportunity. 7mo
BarbaraBB @merelybookish @batsy @Cortg You are so right. I mostly combine them with translated lit, NYRB, classic 1001books and Persephone. Now however with the ToB shortlist I kept reading the same kind of books and I should have known better! (edited) 7mo
BarbaraBB @batsy So happy about Die, My Love ❤️❤️ 7mo
BarbaraBB @jlhammar @squirrelbrain @Ruthiella I wanted to read and love all of the shortlist but I just don‘t. Thanks for the support! 7mo
BarbaraBB @Megabooks Yes! We are making different choices! And will definitely find eachother again. Speculative books are really my jam right now and I hope you‘ll love the Shamsie beside the entertainment business books 😉I really enjoyed it! 7mo
Chelsea.Poole Uh oh. This is one of the 3 I have left and I just checked out the audio. I‘m going in with lower expectations. 😬 7mo
BarbaraBB @Chelsea.Poole I hope it is just my mood and that you‘ll enjoy it! 7mo
Suet624 @Ruthiella ‘TOB fatigue‘ is exactly how I‘m feeling this year. It‘s a bummer. 7mo
kwmg40 That's too bad. I've seen mixed reviews of this book, so I've been holding off, but I did love a couple of Marra's earlier books. 7mo
BarbaraBB @kwmg40 Me too but this one apparently is less good than both others. 7mo
