The Morning News is Exciting
The Morning News is Exciting | Don Mee Choi
3 posts
Poetry. Asian American Studies. "Cameraman, run to my twin twin zone. A girl's exile excels beyond excess. Essence excels exile. Something happens to the wanted girl. Nothing happens to the unwanted girl. The morning news is exciting." A debut volume from poet, translator, artist and activist Don Mee Choi. Here translation, aberration, mobility and movement corrupt the would-be verities of the world's hegemonic codes. "Choi translates feminist politics into an experimental poetry that demilitarizes, deconstructs, and decolonizes any master narrative."--Craig Santos Perez .

In case you didn‘t know and are having a hard time tracking down some of the #toblonglist #tob2024 I just found out the Harris County Public Library will issue a digital-only card (iKnow digital access card) to non-Texas residents. I can check out up to 30 ebooks and their catalog is huge! They might also have an option for non-US visitors? Worth checking, maybe.
TBH I was hoping they would have Hoopla for the #midwintersolace br but no luck… 😅

julieclair Wow! Great to know! I will sign up. Thanks for sharing. 😀 5mo

Deblovestoread I was just thinking about this last week! Thanks for the tag! 😍 5mo
kwmg40 Thanks for the update! 5mo
Bookwormjillk Every time I resolve to read what I own something like this happens 🤣 5mo
ImperfectCJ Woohoo! The most wonderful time of the year! 5mo
Suet624 @Bookwormjillk exactly what I was going to say. 5mo
MicheleinPhilly Damn it, Barbara! I have work to do this afternoon! Eh, I guess it can wait til tomorrow. 🤫 5mo
squirrelbrain LOL @MicheleinPhilly - I just threw aside my work to make a ToB spreadsheet too….just working my way through to see where I can get them all from. 5mo
Suet624 @squirrelbrain didn‘t the TOB give us a spreadsheet once? Or am I imagining that? I ask because I was just about to make one too. (edited) 5mo
Jas16 There goes my afternoon 5mo
squirrelbrain Ooh, I don‘t know @suet624. It would have been easier, but I already did mine and now I‘m just reviewing where I can get all the books from… Scribd / Everand, the local library, BorrowBox, Audible etc etc, to see which ones I‘ll need to buy. 5mo
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain @Suet624 There is one! They refer to it in the article. I already downloaded it! 5mo
BarbaraBB @MicheleinPhilly @squirrelbrain @jas16 Sorry not sorry 😉 (edited) 5mo
squirrelbrain Ah well, Barbara! A bit of time wasted, instead of working. ☺️ I‘d still have had to add all my different columns. 🤣 5mo
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain I know 😂 I didn‘t want to ruin it for you 😀 5mo
Hooked_on_books Gaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!! 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳 5mo
squirrelbrain Don‘t spoil my spreadsheet fun! 🤣 5mo
Suet624 @squirrelbrain @Barbarabb Thanks! I ended up doing my own spreadsheet with some help from the TOB spreadsheet. I have libraries in three different towns around me and I can't believe how many of these books I can get through them. I'm just hoping I don't have a lot of competition to get them. Sadly, a lot of the books selected look kind of grim and dystopian. Not quite what I was looking for. I take that back - Red-Headed Pilgrim looks fun. (edited) 5mo
BkClubCare TY for tagging me! 🥰 And how am extra pleased the Litsy is my first goto for important stuff. (How did I miss the email?!) 5mo
BkClubCare And now I remember why I wanted to join a few more libraries… off to the closest outside-of-our-city-library-system town to join up (they seem to have shorter ebook waits) 5mo
Suet624 @BkClubCare My email came much later in the day than Barbara's apparently. :) AND I'm only missing 11 books. The rest of the books are available at the libraries. I'm excited! (edited) 5mo
Ruthiella Thank you Barbara! Very exciting. 🥳 5mo
BarbaraBB @Suet624 That is awesome, your libraries having all those books! Many so sound grim indeed!! I stick to the more regular ones until the shortlist will be announced! 5mo
Suet624 @BarbaraBB good idea. 5mo
jlhammar Woo-hoo! I think I‘ve only read four of these so far—Cosby, Catton, McBride and Harding. I have Bad Cree, Birthday Party, Happiness Falls and Let Us Descend waiting on my shelves so wouldn‘t mind seeing any of those make the tournament. I‘m a little surprised that The Vaster Wilds, Covenant of Water, Tom Lake and North Woods are absent. Oh, and Small Mercies too. 5mo
Megabooks I swore I wasn‘t going to look at it then…I looked and bought the one set in Kentucky, of course. Will do a more thorough look this weekend! 5mo
Megabooks @jlhammar very surprised about those omissions as well. 🤔 also our camp litsy winner, Bandit Queens, and runner up Yellowface. 🤔🤔 5mo
jlhammar @Megabooks Oh yes, those two as well! I suppose it‘s always a bit surprising what they choose to go with. Part of the fun, I guess. 5mo
Megabooks @jlhammar I think I would be disappointed if it were all marquee authors. Finding the lesser known ones is one of the reasons I love tob time! I think that‘s something most of us fans agree on! 5mo
BkClubCare @jlhammar - I personally wish that “popular” books wouldn‘t get in; skews the zombie vote, imo. Tom Lake is WAY too Best-Seller status! And I adored it - also don‘t want to hear people diss on it 🤷🏻‍♀️ 5mo
batsy Something to look forward to ❤️ 5mo
BarbaraBB @Megabooks I knew you would, the moment I read it was set in Kentucky 🩷 5mo
BarbaraBB @jlhammar @Megabooks @BkClubCare I agree! I am surprised about the omissions but looking forward to the obscure weird books we‘ll be reading again! 5mo
AllDebooks This looks good 😊 5mo
Readerann I‘m not having much time to read these days, but it‘s always exciting when we get into ToB season! I love adding to my list of books I hope to get to someday, somehow. 🫤😄 5mo
Larkken Oh no, I've only read 9! I have some work to do 😄 5mo
cariashley I‘ve read so few of them! Am probably going to wait for the short list to come out before I set any goals for this round. Looking forward to all the discussion in any case! 5mo
BarbaraBB @Megabooks This is the taglist, please add Flaneurette too! 5mo

Addison_Reads I was just reading the article. 💚 Overall, I'm pleased with the shortlist. 1y
Cinfhen Ugh!!!! Im not loving this shortlist but I still have several to read. Of course none that I own but a few are available on #Scribd 1y
RebelReader Thank goodness it doesn‘t start until March because I have only read 4 on the short list! 😬 1y
See All 21 Comments
sarahbarnes Wow, I‘ve hardly read any of these! Guess I better get on it! 🐓 🐓 1y
Chelsea.Poole Ooh! Thanks for posting! I‘m more interested in “My volcano” and “Notes on your sudden disappearance”. And of course several others I still need to get to! 1y
MicheleinPhilly 🤔 I was just tallying today and I own 12 longlist books that I haven‘t read yet. I think maybe 1 is on the shortlist. At least now I won‘t feel so frantic about completing them all before March. 1y
Megabooks 6 I haven‘t read (including play in) and 4 I don‘t own and haven‘t checked on access to. I like the list, but there are definitely some favorites that didn‘t make it (cyclorama, search, flight, now is not the time to panic, etc. etc.) But overall I‘m pretty happy! (edited) 1y
Megabooks Thanks for sharing Holly!! 1y
squirrelbrain Meh, I‘m not thrilled. I‘ve read 6 though, and 1 of the play-ins. I liked all of the ones that I‘ve read, but there‘s two I didn‘t want to read at all. (Babel and The Passenger) 1y
jlhammar Exciting! I've only read 4 from the shortlist (Nightcrawling, Sea of Tranquility, Seven Moons and The Violin Conspiracy). I own Mercury Pictures, Book of Goose, Babel and Tomorrow so definitely want to get to those 4. I placed holds on the audiobooks for several others so might be able to squeeze in a few more in before March. 1y
Ruthiella Thanks for the tag! So exciting. @squirrelbrain I‘m going to skip the McCarthy myself, but I‘m game to try Babel (borrow not buy)! 1y
Meshell1313 Ooh good list! Good reading goals to set by March! 1y
batsy Oh, interesting. I'm very bummed that Bennett and Wang didn't make it! And there's a bunch there that I'm not interested in 🙈 1y
BarbaraBB I read 6 and I liked them but I am not too enthusiastic about the ones I haven‘t read. Like @squirrelbrain I didn‘t want to read those two books! 1y
Cinfhen I‘ve read 9 - im definitely NOT reading passenger, I‘ll try Babel but I have a feeling it won‘t be for me. I already bailed on Seven Moons from the Booker so I won‘t try again. I picked up Manhunt today on Audible sale Notes & Goose are available on Scribd. 1y
Hooked_on_books @Addison_Reads @Megabooks @Meshell1313 There are some I‘d rather see or not see on here, but I think they came up with a pretty good mix! 1y
Hooked_on_books @RebelReader @sarahbarnes @MicheleinPhilly @jlhammar I‘m really glad they release the short list now and don‘t make us wait. There are longlist books I‘ll definitely still read, but it‘s good to have almost 3 months to prepare! 1y
Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain @BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I‘m not excited about Babel, either, though I plan to try it. We‘ll see how I do. And you‘re all wise to skip The Passenger. To me it‘s like a big turd sitting on this list. 💩 1y
Hooked_on_books @Ruthiella I found that the library holds list for the print copies of Babel is way shorter at my library. I‘d rather listen to the audio, but I don‘t want to buy it, so I‘ll try the print. 1y
Hooked_on_books @batsy I agree on the Wang. I really liked that one. And I plan to read the Bennett regardless. 1y
Hooked_on_books @Chelsea.Poole I‘ve been going back and forth about Notes since it published and looks like I have my decision to read it! I‘m excited for My Volcano. It‘s one that spoke to me from the longlist. 1y
