The Mangan Inheritance
The Mangan Inheritance | Brian Moore
3 posts | 2 read | 10 to read
Not so long ago James Mangan was a brilliant young poet. These days, however, he toils as a journalist and shivers in the shadow of his glamorous movie-star wife. And now she has left him for her lover. Adrift and depressed, Jamie takes refuge with his father, in whose house he turns up a 19th-century daguerreotype bearing the initials J.M. and depicting a man who, as it happens, is Jamies spitting image. Could this be the only existing photograph of his purported ancestor, the legendarily dissolute Irish poet James Clarence Mangan? Obsessed by this strange resemblanceand aided by an unexpected financial windfallJamie heads to Ireland thinking at last to discover that elusive entity: himself. Instead, in the dreary coastal village of Drishane, he meets the Mangans: derelict Eileen, sullen Dinny, drunken (and shrunken) Conor, and the sexy and very available Kathleen. They know something, for suresomething to do with Jamie, and something they dont want him to find out. The Mangan Inheritance is melodrama at its most inventive and suggestive, an inquiry into the problem of identity and the nature of ancestry that beguiles the reader with dark deeds, wild humor, and weird goings-on, on its way towards a shocking and terrifyingand utterly satisfyingconclusion.

I bought this because I enjoyed another one by him that we read with the #NYRB group a few years ago. Now I finally picked it up and I wasn‘t disappointed. It‘s dark and a bit gothic and very Irish (I think). Jamie Mangan is traveling to Ireland to delve into his past and to learn is he‘s a descendant of a famous 19th century Irish poet. His journey takes him to a small village with lots of remarkable people.

Ruthiella I feel like I must read at least this book from him before I die 3d
monalyisha Which of his did you read with the group? This one sounds up my alley! 3d
LeeRHarry I loved the tagged so good to hear that this one is good too. I didn‘t like The Doctor‘s Wife by this author. (edited) 3d
BarbaraBB @Ruthiella @monalyisha @LeeRHarry that‘s the one I am referring too, it was such a good (and fun) read! 3d
sarahbarnes Now I must read this! And I didn‘t realize this is the same person who wrote the book others are tagging here, which is also on my TBR! 2d

This wine pairs perfectly with this dark novel. An aspiring, widowed poet sets off to Ireland in search of his ancestry, finding deranged and disturbed distant relatives. As he looks into the face of his possible future, he is initially intrigued but ultimately horrified at what he finds. And with the ending I just read, I will now cope through liquid therapy. #NYRB

LeahBergen I don‘t think I would have to dig too deep to find “deranged ancestors”. 😂😂 7y
