An enslaved boy, Wash, is brought on as an assistant to the plantation owner‘s brother, who is building a rudimentary hot air balloon. The novel is both deftly plotted & intensely introspective, both travelogue and fable. It‘s not a novel I loved intensely, but it did make me think, especially the ending, which defied my expectations. I‘m going to sit with it & wonder if my feeling of dissatisfaction/ambiguity is part of the novel‘s project.

So excited to make my #spooktober #tbr today! Looking forward to at least a few minutes of reading one of these (I don‘t expect to get through them all this month obv) after work ends tonight. I think I‘ll start with Rebecca because it‘s been on my list for literally years. 🙌🏻

Here‘s my August reading wrap up in my #bulletjournal! I can‘t believe I read 20 books this month. #25infive really helped me hit a personal reading record. (The book I hated, I‘m sorry to say, was The Mere Wife, which I was so excited about I bought it on its pub day. Probably the worst read of the year for me.)
.
If you can‘t tell by my color scheme, I am so ready for fall. 🍁

If you liked Hidden Figures. . .
.
Karen Piper grew up at China Lake, a rocket testing facility where both her father and her mother worked on the sidewinder missiles.
.
This book wasn‘t my favorite— it delves into Piper‘s adult life, which I found less interesting than her descriptions of China Lake. However, it did deepen my understanding of female “computers.”

When you love a quotation this much, you put it in your #bulletjournal. I‘ve had so much fun on the launch team for this collection of essays on “the delights & dilemmas of the reading life.” She even has one on You‘ve Got Mail!
.
If you preorder a copy, you can get all the preorder bonuses (a copy of the audiobook, a class on “7 Ways to Get More Out Of Your Reading Life,” & more!). Just for today, it‘s half off at Books A Million— less than $8!

MicheleinPhilly Yeah the decorator‘s rule of thumb is bullshit. I‘m filling 3/3 of my shelves with BOOKS! 6y

A Little Life: A Novel | Hanya Yanagihara
post image

I started A Little Life a couple of years ago but put it down when it started getting too dark. I‘m in a different place now, so I‘m going to try again! I hear the language & characters are worth the heartbreak.
.
Usually, I don‘t pick up long books this close to the end of the month because I know I won‘t be able to count them in my monthly total. 😅 I know that‘s ridiculous, but it‘s true.
.
Also, shout out to the best pens ever: Pilot Juice!

Reviewsbylola It‘s definitely very dark. 💔 6y
LectricSheep @Reviewsbylola Did you enjoy it? Was it worth it for you? 😅 6y

“Human nature is universally imbued with a desire for liberty, and a hatred for servitude.” — Caesar, Gallic Wars
.
I‘m savoring my way through Tom Holland‘s Rubicon: The Last Years of the Roman Republic. It‘ll probably be a few more days before I can give a final review since I‘m taking notes and summarizing as I go, which makes the reading process take about 3 times longer than usual. But for really good non-fiction, I think it‘s worth it.

Every Heart a Doorway | Seanan McGuire
post image
Pickpick

If you‘re not sure about novellas, try the Wayward Children series! McGuire‘s stories follow children who, like Alice in Wonderland, fell out of our world and into a very different one. The doors opened because they needed them to, and they took the children to places that suited them much better than Earth did. But then, for many different reasons, they were forced to return to this world, and all they want is to find their doors again.

Addison_Reads Great review. These are on my TBR pile. I think it's time to move them up to the top. 😁 6y
LectricSheep @Addison_Reads I went more in-depth on my IG page— I wish Litsy lifted the character limit. 🙄 But yes, absolutely read them! I think they‘d be great to travel with— they‘re so short and totally captivating. I‘d start with Every Heart a Doorway, then maybe Beneath the Sugar Sky and then Down Among the Sticks and Bones (not publication order, but I think they make more sense that way). 6y

Alright, enough adulting for the day. Time to read!
.
I‘m LOVING this crazy horrifying (sub)urban fantasy. A group of kids is “adopted” by a mysterious, cruel being they call Father who teaches each of them in their own catalogs— war, healing, communing with the dead, seeing all possible futures... you know, the things we all learned. When we meet them, though, Father has disappeared, the Library is off-limits, & no one knows what‘s happened.

heikemarie Love this one!! 6y

Reagan I loved that book! So bizarre. 6y
DaveGreen7777 I agree! This book was bizarre but so refreshingly original! 😁 6y
CindyMyLifeIsLit One of my very favorite books!! To me, it‘s one of those books that, when one of your friends says they didn‘t care for it, makes you feel, secretly, just a little sorry for them. If you meet someone who “gets” Char, you feel a kinship with them—they get it! It‘s a little like being in a secret society. I know—I‘m weird!! 😁 6y

Does anyone know of a fun #readathon in #September? I fell in love after completing #25infive and I want to do more! I know there‘s the #Screamathon in October, but...I don‘t know if I can wait a whole month!

The photo is of French Mallow up at Monticello (we went on a tour this weekend with my in-laws). I know the big draw for Monticello is supposed to be the house, but I love the grounds. ❤️

Zelma Very pretty flower! 😍 6y
Librariana So #Boutofbooks is currently going on until midnight on Sunday, but in September, I only know of #Duodecathon (Sept 1-7). You pick one out of a list of 12 challenges so that by the end of the year, you've essentially completed all of them. It's intended to be a monthly readathon. Those are the only two I know of 😕 6y
Librariana Rephrasing - Duodecathon is an annual readathon broken up into monthly installments 😁 6y

This is my first book finished for the #25infive readathon, and I am so glad I read it. The author‘s depiction of what American injustices can do to hopeful, hardworking immigrants like Jende and his wife Neni was so heartbreaking. I‘m sure this novel was powerful in 2016 when it first came out, but reading it in 2018, the year of “detention centers,” gave it a special resonance for me.

DivineDiana I agree wholeheartedly that it was heartbreaking, but the author did a good job of putting things in a positive light in the end. 6y

A modern retelling of Beowulf from Grendel‘s mom‘s perspective where Heorot is suburbia? Uh, yes. So much yes. I‘ve always felt like Grendel‘s mom was the most interesting underrepresented character in the epic.

In case you‘re wondering what line my page flag is marking: “Earth‘s a thieved place. Everything living needs somewhere to be.”

In the past 24 hrs, I‘ve been to the library twice & the bookstore once; here‘s the resulting stack. ❤️ I had to buy the Incendiaries after reading the NPR review this morning. I‘d expected to see a big, sprawling novel, but it‘s surprisingly small! As for the library, my hold on the tagged book came in today, and I couldn‘t let it languish. (Am I the only one who personifies the books on the hold shelf as adopted pets waiting to go home?)

LectricSheep @vkois88 I never thought of the difficulties lefties might have in following hand-dominant craft tutorials! The book @MommyOfTwo included says it has instructions for lefties though, so maybe all hope isn‘t lost! 😀 I don‘t see it in the database, but it‘s published by Leisure Arts and its called “Learn to Crochet” 6y
vkois88 I'll have to look for it at work... I generally try to stay away from yarn bc I know it can be a pricey habit. I used to loom knit. So I have toooons of yarn, and actually started weeding through it last year. Though it doesn't stop me from lusting after more!! Lol... I like to make infinity scarves. I just haven't made one in a long time. I think the last thing I made was for my daughter in October, a little hat 😊 6y

I‘m setting up my new bedside reading table in the hopes of incentivizing more books and less YouTube before bed. 🙄 Any suggestions for what to include on the shelves? I know I‘m going to make a mini “reading kit” with a pen, bookmark, highlighter... I‘m going to keep my reading journal there for sure... Not sure what else! I‘m open to suggestions. ☺️ What helps you read consistently before bed?

Zelma Good lighting is a must for me. Or my nook and charger. 6y
LectricSheep @Zelma oh! Yes! A book light and kindle charger! Thank you! 6y
rather_be_reading omg i love it! 6y
See All 34 Comments
night_shift That's a cute shelf! I keep a charger, my kindle, a book, notebook, and pen on my bedside table. 6y
Emilymdxn I always like to have a drink or water bottle near me when I read otherwise I‘ll be wondering if I‘m thirsty and up and down to get water or a snack every few minutes. Maybe that‘s just me lol! You could make a small space for a nice coaster for a tea mug or something? 6y
LectricSheep @UnidragonFrag maybe what matters most is what I *don‘t* keep on it (I‘m looking at you, laptop) 😅 6y
LectricSheep @Emilymdxn I‘m the same way! I should have a snack section for sure. Now how to keep my partner from eating them...🙄 6y
LeahBergen Maybe a small stack of short story collections for when you don‘t know what you feel like reading? 6y
Emily92Bibliophile Coasters for hot tea and/ or cold beverages ! 6y
night_shift Oh yeah! And a coaster for whatever I happen to be drinking at the time. And lol yes, keep that laptop (& phone) away from yer bed! That's bad news for getting good sleep (I should know lol) 6y
LibrarianRyan No advise. Love the shelf! 6y
Librariana Some post-it notes/flags, lip balm, hand lotion... You've mentioned it already, but notebook or reading journal, a selection of fun bookmarkS (plural), a coaster for tea (or wine), a tin with some biscuits/cookies... a pretty candle! 6y
Sarah83 A gorgeous bookish mug? ☺️ 6y
saresmoore I always have something light and funny within reach. It‘s my favorite way to fight sleeplessness. Currently on the nightstand is 6y
LectricSheep @LeahBergen good idea! I might go with essays, since I tend to read those more than short stories. 6y
LectricSheep @Emily92Bibliophile I have handmade coasters a friend made as a gift a few years ago, and I feel like they would look so cute on here! 6y
LectricSheep @UnidragonFrag technology is so ingrained in my habits that I once “tricked” myself into reading before bed by using the kindle software on my laptop. It was like my brain didn‘t care what I was doing on the screen, all that mattered was that I was on the screen. Kinda scary how habit-forming it is. 😶 6y
LectricSheep @librariana all great suggestions! Thank you! ❤️ 6y
LectricSheep @sarah83 it‘s hidden in the photo, but there‘s a mug behind that book stack— it‘s the “banned books” mug from Out of Print. So you and I are on the same page! 😁 6y
LectricSheep @saresmoore I usually go for boring as my sleep aid. I pretty much always have a history book on my kindle that takes me more than a year to get through because I only read it when I can‘t fall asleep and almost always fall asleep within a few pages. Right now I‘m snoring my way through a bio of Julius Caesar. 😀 6y
saresmoore That‘s a brilliant strategy! 6y
LectricSheep @saresmoore now if only I could remember anything about the book. 😂🤷🏼‍♀️ 6y
Mdargusch I need that table! It‘s so perfect. 6y
LectricSheep @Mdargusch Pier One! But I did see one almost exactly like it on Amazon for $30 and almost bought it “so my table could have a friend.” 🙄 6y
night_shift I completely feel you. I have the same habit in the morning with sitting on the toilet & looking at my phone for like 10-20 minutes. Which I'm doing right now. Which I need to stop D: 6y
LectricSheep @UnidragonFrag 😂 I motivate myself not to do that only with the promise of coffee. 6y
night_shift That's a pretty good motivator, but I'm also very lazy in the morning so my only coffee isn't until I get to work. And it's only mediocre and thus not a great motivator. I really need to start setting my coffee pot up the night before again. That seemed to help! 6y
LectricSheep @UnidragonFrag yes, having coffee ready to go is key. my partner leaves for work really early in the morning and I‘ve trained him to leave a cup and a half for me. 😂 We have (grumpy, uncaffeinated) words if he drinks the whole pot. 6y
night_shift XD I wish I could get my husband to do that, but I'm usually the one having to drag him out of bed ten minutes before we have to go. He has insomnia, so I always feel bad if he's actually asleep and I have to wake him up :( but also, he does that whole pot drinking thing, so it's moderately dangerous to risk making a pot in the morning lol 6y
LectricSheep @UnidragonFrag Ah, the joys of marriage. 😂 6y
Mdargusch Good to know! 6y
Sarah83 Sounds pretty great 😍 6y

Trying to sort out my thoughts about this one in my #readingjournal. I read it in 1 day, a testament to its compelling plot. The last 1/3 of the book started to feel like endless gut punches tho— so many emotional lows piling onto each other. It started to feel like I was being...manipulated. Like Hannah really, really, really wanted to make me cry. 🤷🏼‍♀️ There‘s a time & place for books like that though, which is why it gets a “pick” from me.

DivineDiana Interested in what the remainder of your journal entry will say?!? 6y

You know it‘s true love when your partner looks over, sees you counting on your fingers, and says out of the blue “are you worried about the number of months left in the year to hit your reading goal?” #hivemind #readingmath I‘m coming from behind for life reasons, but I‘m feeling good now that I‘ve got a best-case, worst-case, and middle scenario. 🤓 #27weeksleft #howistheyearhalfoveralready

RadicalReader @LectricSheep your partner as into reading as you are? 6y
Ingerella You can do it! But either way, the process is the best part! 6y
LectricSheep @radicalreader nope, but I‘m working on him! He mostly listens to audiobooks on his commute and gets through about 7-10 books a year now, though, which is pretty good! 6y
See All 13 Comments
LectricSheep @Ingerella I‘d never have a shot at my goal without Litsy! 6y
Ingerella Me either! I'm a pretty slow reader and before Litsy I was happy to get a book a month..I think last year I only read 12. This year it's only June and I've already read 26! Litsy reinvigorated my love of reading for sure! 6y
Drnkpnkprincess I‘m so far behind my “goal” — but I did choose to double lasts years total read 🤭... I‘ll just be happy with the same amount or more than last year. I‘m also reading a lot of new authors (#thankstolitsy ) and genres I usually don‘t pick up. So whatever my number - I‘ll be happy. 6y
Louise Oh, I wouldn't like the stress of trying to meet book goals like this! It would feel so limiting if I wanted to read a few huge books. So interesting to see how others are motivated, though. Good luck! 6y
RadicalReader @LectricSheep that is phenomenal!!! I wish him much success and enjoyment on his reading journey 6y
rather_be_reading 😂😂 6y
SledgeReader I don‘t want to #blameitonkitsy butttt.....I lose a lot of reading time because I can‘t get enough Litsy time. 😂I think I‘m 8 books behind! I‘ve got some car trips coming though! Whew - a plan!☺️😬 6y
LectricSheep @SledgeReader My Goodreads tracker is exploding with anxiety, especially since I don‘t update it frequently. “You‘re 3,908 books behind...would you like to update your reading goal?” But I keep telling myself that I thrive under deadline, so it‘s fine! 😅 6y
SledgeReader @LectricSheep BIG goals. I may go to work and crawl straight under my desk to process that! 6y

Mailed my #makerswap (there are two boxes— I may have gone a bit overboard 🙄) today! I forgot to take a photo of the boxes, so instead have a shot of my lunchtime perch yesterday. This cafe has huge windows that open up onto a patio; if you can get a window seat like this one, it‘s the perfect reading spot. Has anyone read this book yet, by the way? It‘s a bit...strange. Read it three years ago and found it forgettable. Had to reread for a new book club that has its first meeting tomorrow night— still forgettable. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Cool premise, love the world building— but for some reason, this just doesn‘t click for me. Maybe shallow characters? Watching the movie with my husband because he says “there‘s no way he can make it through 600 pages.” 😅 I‘ll cover for him.

rajithr RPO is mostly about the 80s nostalgia. For a book on console games and gamers, it could have been better. I thought the hero won the games very easily, without going through the gamers trials. 6y
Anton There's a whole podcast (featuring Mike Nelson of Mystery Science Theater) devoted to making fun of this book. 🤣 6y

julesG There's a German saying: "Scherben bringen Glück" - loosely translated: broken china will bring you luck. A lot of people have a party shortly before their wedding day (a lot have it on the evening of the wedding) where friends and family bring old plates and cups and smash them on the floor (outside, designated area) to bring the couple luck. I‘m just under 100 pages in, and I‘m feeling a little overwhelmed by all the political nuances that the characters keep having long conversations about. I‘m so sorry for missing out on so many fun Litsy things lately— especially sorry to @River_Voice my #freakyfriday buddy. Red Rising | Pierce Brown

Pickpick

Just finished Red Rising after letting it languish on my Kindle for months. It‘s been EXACTLY what I need right now: all plot and pacing and more than a little gore. It‘s been strangely enlightening to read it next to this biography of Julius Caesar, especially given all the novel‘s references to the classical era.

@emmanoble you wonderful human! I got your first box a few days ago and wrote you a thank you that went in the mail on Monday, not realizing that you in Australia won‘t get it for approximately a thousand years. I hope this was a processing error, and you didn‘t think that I didn‘t get my first box! Let me know if I need to talk to amazon and get you a refund, or if we just stumbled on an infinite books hack! 😜

LeahBergen Let me in on that hack. 😂 6y
LectricSheep @LeahBergen I know right?! 6y
emmanoble I had a feeling this would happen! 😂 I got an email from Amazon a few days ago saying it was lost in the mail because of the crazy weather & they offered a free replacement. I was thinking wouldn‘t it be funny if two showed up now. 😂 I guess you can do what you like with the extras since they were free!! 6y
LectricSheep @emmanoble Now you have discovered the craziness that is the Charlottesville post office. Is it okay if we offer them as a giveaway? 😀 6y
emmanoble Yes, definitely!! Yayy for free books! 😊 6y

🎉🎉🎉 this is such an awesome idea! I signed up last night.

Props to @LibrarianRyan for coming up with such a great idea. #makerswap

mabell Yay! I'm really tempted! But I'm trying to figure out if I make anything worth sharing 😂 6y
LectricSheep @mabell I make cards, so they are by default always shared— even if they‘re totally deformed. 😂 What do you make? 6y
mabell @LectricSheep That's what I'm trying to narrow down! I dabble a lot, but there isn't anything that's "my thing." I do a bit of letterpress, but I don't know what my match could make. I'm still giving it some thought. I like yours! Cards would be perfect. ❤️ 6y

LectricSheep @mabell Whoa, letterpress! I don‘t know anything about that. But I imagine you need a lot of tools? 6y
DiruVamp What a cute idea! 6y
mabell @LectricSheep Generally yes, you do need the big press, so mine is a kind of faux letterpress. I made a substitute press with a pasta machine. 😆 6y
julesG I'm still undecided. I make a lot of different things, but knitting is my favourite hobby, besides reading. Just don't think I want to force knitting needles onto someone who hates knitting. @mabell Neat idea! Will have to steal this idea of using a pasta machine. 6y
mabell @julesG Do! And let me know what you think! 6y
LectricSheep @mabell A pasta machine— genius! 6y
LectricSheep @julesG I feel like anyone who participated in this swap would be happy to have a beginners‘ knitting project to work on! It seems like that‘s part of the fun. 😁 6y
julesG @LectricSheep I think you just sold this swap to me. 😁 6y
LectricSheep @julesG 🙌🏻 mission accomplished! 6y
