Browsing about Cornwall, I came across several articles about Menabilly House, du Maurier's inspiration for Manderley. This is Daphne with her children at Menabilly, which she leased for 26 years. The details in Rebecca of the second Mrs. de Winter becoming enamoured with Manderley as a child while on holiday mirrors du Maurier's own experience with Menabilly.

https://www.tatler.com/article/menabilly-the-real-manderley-rebecca-daphne-du-ma...

TieDyeDude I'll have to bookmark the link. I just start reading this, about 3 chapters in. 1w
BeeCurious Thanks for posting the link @bookwomble. 🙂 I'm bookmarking it too, as I plan to reread Rebecca during April with the #hashtagbrigade. 1w
Bookwomble @TieDyeDude @BeeCurious Just so you know, there are no spoilers in the article. The direct references it makes are to the novel's first paragraph, otherwise it's about du Maurier's experience with the real house. It's pretty short, but has interesting photos 😊 1w
See All 6 Comments
BeeCurious Oh, thanks for letting us know there aren't any spoilers to worry about. Awesome! 1w
dabbe Thanks for this! 🤩 1w
BeeCurious @Bookwomble - I just read the article and really enjoyed the additional information and the photos. Thank you. 🙂 As it mentions, Menabilly also plays a significant role in The King's General, which I have read before. It's not quite as thrilling as Rebecca but still a well written gothic historical fiction and romance novel. 4d

"There was a strange buzzing at the end of the line, and then a voice came, low and rather harsh, whether that of a woman or a man I could not tell, and 'Mrs de Winter?' it said, 'Mrs de Winter?'
'I'm afraid you've made a mistake,' I said; 'Mrs de Winter has been dead for over a year.'"

This is such a fantastic scene in the book, showing how unsure of herself and her identity is The Second Mrs de Winter ? I so want to reassure her ?

Ruthiella Agree. I know that some readers get frustrated by the second Mrs. de Winter‘s passivity, but I think du Maurier gets it just right. I love how Rebecca haunts everyone. 2w
dabbe @Ruthiella So agree! And the title itself literally the entire book when the main character doesn‘t even have a name! 2w

"'The rest of the tangerine is sour, I shouldn't eat it,' he said, and I stared at him, the words going slowly to my head, then looked down at the fruit on my plate. The quarter was hard and pale. He was right. The tangerine was very sour. I had a sharp, bitter taste in my mouth, and I had only just noticed it."

This incident at the breakfast when Maxim proposes marriage to the narrator feels foreshadowy ??

Ruthiella Have you not read this before ? Or seen the film? 1mo
Bookwomble @Ruthiella I've not read it before, and I've seen bits of the classic Olivier film, but don't think I've ever seen it all. I do know the basic story as I haven't always lived under a rock 😄, but the details are new to me. I like what du Maurier did with this little scene. 1mo
Ruthiella I had the luck to come to the book as an ignorant teenager, completely blind. I was gripped! Enjoy! 😃 1mo
ShyBookOwl I watched the movie back in film school and it became one of my favourite Hitchcocks. But I read the book years later and fell in love lol I have re-read it a few times now 🖤 Enjoy!! 1mo

The overbearing Mrs Van Hopper peevishly remonstrates with the future Second Mrs de Winter for neglecting to collect her Taxol medication. Wondering what Taxol is a remedy for, I was initially surprised to see it's a cancer treatment, then seeing it was developed for that purpose well after the book's publication, dug further to find the name was previously used for a constipation preparation. ⬇️

Bookwomble Now, although cancer is a more serious condition, constipation is no laughing matter itself; I do wonder, though, if du Maurier was mockingly hinting how full of 💩 Mrs Van Hopper is? 🤔 (edited) 1mo
SamAnne Taxol the cancer drug was developed from the Pacific Yew tree in the Pacific Northwest USA. It was being destroyed by the overlogging, decimation of our old growth mature forests. I worked on the efforts to halt the destruction. Today it‘s made synthetically. But another reminder of the importance to protect natural areas, biodiversity. (edited) 1mo
Bookwomble @SamAnne I did read about the "cancer Taxol" when I was searching for the "constipation Taxol", and about the environmental concerns. Cool that you were involved in the efforts to stop deforestation ??? 1mo

AnnR Wow, how did I miss all this when I read Rebecca years ago? I probably speed through it and didn't pick up on some subtle things I should have. Thanks for the comments and information @Bookwomble and @SamAnne . 🙂 (edited) 1mo
AnnR Adding: Since #pemberlittens are reading Rebecca in April, I will try to pay more attention to the details. 1mo
Bookwomble @AnnR I let the first mention of Taxol go by as simply the thing the narrator forgot so that DduM could illustrate Mrs Van H's pettiness, but when it was mentioned again my curiosity was piqued and I wanted to learn what it was. I guess lots of little "Easter eggs" escape us readers, particularly when it's an older book with references now obscure. I did recognise the Eno brand of "liver salts" that Max takes as my nana used it. It was mainly ⬇️ 1mo
Bookwomble @AnnR ... mainly taken as an antacid for dyspepsia, and if I was to strain the metaphor, as "dyspeptic" by association means being melancholic and morose, perhaps this is another DduM way of signalling a character's personality? (Sorry, I didn't mean to turn it into a TED Talk!) 1mo
AnnR @Bookwomble - Not to worry as I appreciate your explanations and generally enjoy Ted Talks anyway, lol. I agree about your 'Easter Eggs' comments. I'd expect the liver salts reference to completely go over my head but Taxol I should have immediately picked up on so it's bugging me now. I'll highlight the passages this time around in my ebook version, when I reread it soon. 🙂🙂🙂 1mo

I am thrilled to join the club of readers who have enjoyed Rebecca. The elegant writing and fascinating story were a true pleasure. The opening chapters were beautifully written and had me mesmerized while also curious about this place called Manderley. After I finished the book, I immediately reread the first couple of chapters. It felt fitting, as the beginning was just as significant as the ending.

Mehso-so

I have been interested in reading this book for a while. Unfortunately I am a little disappointed in it. I just felt that the author spent too much time in the description and not enough in the story. The ending almost made the book for me. But it fell just a little short. I don't know if I would read anything else by this author. If I was giving it a star rating, I would give it a 3 star rating.

Begins as a comedy of manners and a straightforward romance (but then, so does Jane Eyre.) Time is unmoored in the action and the unnamed narrator‘s social class is vague, and it is striking that the novel‘s title is not HER name, as would be conventional, but that of someone dead. The dominant dead woman's scent hauntingly lingers on old clothes & the burning question at the close is: has the narrator exorcised Rebecca OR become possessed by her?

I almost went with a so-so rating, but I‘ve changed my mind. I think the issue is that this book is SO culturally pervasive, that it‘s hard to avoid some knowledge of the plot. The writing was engaging enough that I basically stayed up all night reading and didn‘t even realize it was 2 a.m. I think she weaves a good tale, and it is worth reading an OG. ☺️ 224/1,001 #1001Books October‘s Double #BookSpin

I loved this! It's been a long while since I last fell in love with a classic. I've heard good things about Daphne du Maurier but it took forever for me to actually pick up one of her books. Maybe the most powerful thing in this book is the atmosphere. It keeps the reader engaged to the story the whole time. I can't remember many classics that have done that to me before. ❤️

It has to be Rebecca. I read it for the first time as a teen & was obsessed; I kept reading it over & over for a few years. That haunting opening line; the Gothic atmosphere; the glamour, dread, & mystery. How it shifts from the heady holiday vibes of Monte Carlo to the terrifying yet opulent gloom of Manderley.

Probably worth noting that I was similarly obsessed with Jane Eyre 😆 #sensingatheme

vivastory I know that some people think that the ending is rushed, but IMO the entire book is perfect 2y

AnnR I think Rebecca will be a popular choice for “R“ and well deserving! 🙂 2y

Had a really intensive walk around London tonight and saw as many sights as possible in only few hours. I have only tonight free before my work things start tomorrow morning. Ate some really good pizza and did also some reading. 😁

Travelling for work again. This time to London and decided to bring with me something suitable to read. I love syncing book to my travel locations! And I love London! It's been forever since I've been there! 😍😍😍

julesG Enjoy! And safe travels. 2y
