After falling in love with Vermont on a vacation, Ellen Stimson and her family move from St. Louis to a small town, Dorset. They then decide to buy the town‘s country store, a fixture of the community, and make one incredible mistake after another.

I understand how this book has gotten some negative reviews. You can‘t help but shake your head at some of their mistakes and feel a bit bad for the townspeople, but I found the stories very humorous.

Chris Bohjalian and his wife moved from Brooklyn, NY to Lincoln, a small town in Vermont, with a population under 1000. These essays follow the changing landscape of Vermont and small town life.

As I continue my daydreams of Vermont, I found these stories enjoyable and many touching.

As I am debating retiring to upstate New York or possibly Vermont, Saranac Lake is one of my top choices.

This book is a collection of early photographs of the town with brief captions. Most of the photos are from the early 1900‘s. An interesting peek into the past.

First off, the chapter where she describes a ride home from college with 2 guys after making the unfortunate decision to eat month old McDonald‘s not only had me laughing out loud on the subway, but my eyes were actually tearing up from laughing so hard.

Her other stories cover a range of experiences, such as depression, abuse, death, breakups, lesbian relationships, and love. She is a bit graphic for me, but I still really enjoyed it.

This is my favorite so far of my “mini farm” books. It is very detailed and packs in a lot of information. This books focuses on gardening/ egg 🥚 laying chickens 🐓/having mini goats 🐐/ & raising 🐝 in a regular suburban neighborhood. It also goes into how to find out what is allowed and advocating if not.

The author writes about her consuming desire to run a farm. After moving from Idaho, she continues her homesteading adventure while renting a place in Vermont. Before long she has chickens, rabbits, a goat, turkey, geese, and a few sheep.

As someone w/ a studio apt in NYC, I often dream of the day when I can have some egg laying chickens, rabbits 🐇(for knitting) & maybe some African Pygmy goats. And bees! 🐝 Enjoyed following her journey.

I loved Annie Spence‘s love letters and break-up notes to books. Some evoked feelings of nostalgia while, at other times, she had me laughing out loud (quite a bit actually).
