Red Rising
Red Rising | Pierce Brown
The Earth is dying. Darrow is a Red, a miner in the interior of Mars. His mission is to extract enough precious elements to one day tame the surface of the planet and allow humans to live on it. The Reds are humanity's last hope. Or so it appears, until the day Darrow discovers it's all al lie. That Mars has been habitable - and inhabited - for generations, by a class of people calling themselves the Golds. A class of people who look down on Darrow and his fellows as slave labour, to be exploited and worked to death without a second thought. Until the day that Darrow, with the help of a mysterious group of rebels, disguises himself as a Gold and infiltrates their command school, intent on taking down his oppressors from the inside. But the command school is a battlefield - and Darrow isn't the only student with an agenda.Break the chains. Live for more.

#Two4Tuesday

1. Have to go with Sevro from Red Rising—a bit of a cheat because he is a supporting character, who becomes a main one, in an already great book but he does make every scene he‘s in even better. ♥️ Sevro

2. I generally like a strong cast of supporting characters.

@TheSpineView

TheSpineView I agree with you on #1. Thanks for playing! 12h

This book is battered and beaten like many of the characters that Pierce Brown crafted carefully. If you are looking for the story of an underdog, manipulation, rage, love and passion - look no further. I can‘t wait to read book two and rate this bad boy an 8/10. Absolutely worth the read.

This book was just a little too sci-fi-ish for me. And a game where kids kill kids while gods play with and change the game is a little too Hunger Games-ish for me. I see why people like it, but HG was way better IMO. That being said I‘m sure I‘ll read the rest of the series, ha!

This was boring. Mix of Hunger Games and Lord of the Flies. The MC is too perfect. That's why I have a few plot hole questions.

5 stars!
I can see why people keep mentioning The Hunger Games when reviewing this book. It's more violent, does has a lot of the same elements, but there's a lot more going on in this world. Some advice- skip trying the audiobook (this is a story you need to read) and go in knowing that it will take a bit to suck you in. Once you get pulled in though, you won't be able to stop.

Bailed only 10% into the audiobook, but I could tell pretty quickly that I wasn‘t going to enjoy it! It‘s just not my type of thing! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

LibrarianRyan This is one of those books I always say get past part 1. Part one is very predictable, and kind of boring. But at part 2 - wow. Then it has a slow middle. If you ever get the urge to try again. 11mo
ItsAnotherJen I bailed too on the audiobook a while ago, I'm going to try reading it now. I think that might be the better way to get into this world. I'll let you know how it goes 🤞 11mo
Angitron @ItsAnotherJen Please do! I‘d be curious to hear if the experience is an improvement from the audiobook. 11mo
Angitron @LibrarianRyan Thanks for the tip! 😊 11mo
ItsAnotherJen Waaaaaay better reading this rather than doing the audiobook! Try it again, and get past the first 20%. If you don't start loving it..I'd be surprised. It's a different experience taking in the story this way. 11mo

I finished Red Rising about a minute ago. There are definitely some mixed feelings going on. I expected to be blown away, but it just felt lacking in some ways. However, I‘m really interested to see where this series goes. The end set up a plot line that really intrigued me.

https://wildwoodreads.com/2021/04/26/red-rising-by-pierce-brown-review/

Twainy Me too. I investigated because it felt like there were utter nut cases giving this series high praise after reading book one. Apparently book one is slim in awesomeness. The next book is supposed to knock socks off. We shall see ... 13mo

🎧📚 Hunger Games, Lord Of The Flies, A Deadly Education, on Mars, for adults!

I‘ve read that the second book is where the series takes off.

Since my first sentence says it all ... other than that the main protagonist Darrow is a bit unlikeable as the annoying “Chosen One” ... I‘ll just say that I enjoyed it, the narrator was good & I‘ve already gotten all of the available Audible books.

Definitely going to need the 2nd book now...

I'm so glad I decided to restart this series before just diving into book 4 and 5. Red Rising was a favorite when I read it the first time and after this reread I think I love it even more. 💚

I typically tell people it reminds me of an adult Hunger Games, which still holds true. Darrow, Sevro, and Mustang are such amazing characters and the action is relentless.

Jan 2021 - sci fi / dystopian - neat concept about caste and societal construct as well as class, wealth, and belief in yourself based on all those things. Solid foundation for the series and plays well as a movie of the mind. Hunger Games and GoT with a touch of we are ants ... in space

I read Red Rising a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it but never continued on with the series. Now I will!

I have heard the series gets better as the books go on, has anyone read them all?

Kimberlone The original three book trilogy is super good! I haven‘t read the 4th and later books yet, but I do highly recommend this series! 1y
Literary_Siren @SassenachTheBookWizard has read them all or most. If I remember her reviews, she highly enjoyed them. 1y
DGRachel I‘ve read through Iron Gold. I LOVE the original trilogy. Pierce Brown changed things up with the next set by adding more POV characters and increasing the scope of the plot. I haven‘t been able to bring myself to pick up Dark Age, but it‘s on my priority list for this year. I always feel so broken after his books. 1y

This is the kind of thing that drives me up the wall! Why does Libby have only book three of a five book series? What am I meant to do with this? 😂 I swear that like, at least 90% of series that I look at don't have all the books in a series and a truly surprising amount that don't have the first book, so then how am I supposed to even start? 🤦

SeaToSkyes It has to do with the licensing rights your individual library has; that's why I have multiple library cards! 😉 1y
Molly_the_mezzo Oh yeah, I know, and I don't blame anyone, it is just SO annoying! 1y
SeaToSkyes It is, just like how libraries will weed books in a series only to end up repurchasing them later on 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ 1y
See All 12 Comments
LibrarianRyan @SeaToSkyes @Molly_the_mezzo McMillan publishers who‘s imprint Tor publishes this series. Their ebooks to libraries are metered. You only get so many checkouts before you have to buy a new copy. It‘s usually 52 but sometimes less. Some metering like scholastic is done by time span. PRH let‘s libraries choose whole own (at a crazy price) of metered, but that can depend on the platform used. It needs more regulation. 👇🏻 1y
LibrarianRyan I thought the price fixing s candle years ago would take care of this, and it did for the public but not for libraries. 1y
Molly_the_mezzo @LibrarianRyan Thanks, that's helpful information to have! But actually, I already own hard copies of the first three of this series, so it was more general whining.😂 I dislike being inconvenienced, and am a giant baby! 1y
LibrarianRyan @Molly_the_mezzo oh I get it. The rants I can go on about library ebooks. Mainly as the person 2ho has to pay for them. 😜 1y
KathyWheeler @LibrarianRyan It is infuriating. A faculty member requested that I buy an ebook on her area. The print copy was $25.00; the ebook was $700. She was completely shocked and decided they didn‘t need it. To me, this is unconscionable and is price gouging. 1y
LibrarianRyan @KathyWheeler oh yeah. There have been a few bills to set regulations for ebooks for libraries, but they never make it out of committee. For my library if you can‘t get it in print they want you to purchase an entire database instead of one book. It‘s crazy 1y
KathyWheeler @LibrarianRyan I‘ve had to explain that to faculty before — that I can‘t justify $30,000 or more for a database just for one book. They always look at me with shock that I can‘t just buy the one ebook. 1y
SeaToSkyes Oh my gosh, I had no idea that ebooks were so much more expensive! I work in a library, but don't really deal with purchasing. I was able to upgrade our adult graphic novels for a school project this year, however, so I did get a glimpse into collection development. 1y
Molly_the_mezzo Just to clarify, I did mean that I was annoyed at the universe for being unaccomodating to my whims, definitely not at librarians! Librarians do impossible jobs and are grossly underpaid for it. I just would prefer that everything in my life work smoothly with no effort on my part, is that so much to ask? 😋 1y

5⭐️. This is my second time reading this and I liked it as much of not more this time around. Read it for book club and had great conversations about the parallels between violence and colors in the book and the issues of race and society levels in America today. Overall a action packed read that like many others have said can be seen as Hunger Games in space.
