NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR | BuzzFeed | Tor.com | BookPage | Library Journal | Publishers Weekly • Naomi Novik, author of the New York Times bestselling and critically acclaimed Temeraire novels, introduces a bold new world rooted in folk stories and legends, as elemental as a Grimm fairy tale.“Uprooted is confidently wrought and sympathetically cast. I might even call it bewitching.”—Gregory Maguire, bestselling author of Wicked and Egg & Spoon “Our Dragon doesn’t eat the girls he takes, no matter what stories they tell outside our valley. We hear them sometimes, from travelers passing through. They talk as though we were doing human sacrifice, and he were a real dragon. Of course that’s not true: he may be a wizard and immortal, but he’s still a man, and our fathers would band together and kill him if he wanted to eat one of us every ten years. He protects us against the Wood, and we’re grateful, but not that grateful.” Agnieszka loves her valley home, her quiet village, the forests and the bright shining river. But the corrupted Wood stands on the border, full of malevolent power, and its shadow lies over her life. Her people rely on the cold, driven wizard known only as the Dragon to keep its powers at bay. But he demands a terrible price for his help: one young woman handed over to serve him for ten years, a fate almost as terrible as falling to the Wood. The next choosing is fast approaching, and Agnieszka is afraid. She knows—everyone knows—that the Dragon will take Kasia: beautiful, graceful, brave Kasia, all the things Agnieszka isn’t, and her dearest friend in the world. And there is no way to save her. But Agnieszka fears the wrong things. For when the Dragon comes, it is not Kasia he will choose.Praise for Uprooted“Uprooted has leapt forward to claim the title of Best Book I’ve Read Yet This Year. . . . Moving, heartbreaking, and thoroughly satisfying, Uprooted is the fantasy novel I feel I’ve been waiting a lifetime for. Clear your schedule before picking it up, because you won’t want to put it down.”—NPR “A very enjoyable fantasy with the air of a modern classic . . . Naomi Novik skillfully takes the fairy-tale-turned-bildungsroman structure of her premise . . . and builds enough flesh on those bones to make a very different animal. . . . The vivid characters around her also echo their fairy-tale forebears, but are grounded in real-world ambivalence that makes this book feel quietly mature, its world lived-in.”—The New York Times Book Review “Novik here delivers a tale that is funny and fast-paced, laced with hair-raising battle scenes and conspiracies; it also touches on deeper ecological concerns we grapple with today.”—The Washington Post “Novik takes us on a surprise-filled journey. . . . The resulting warmth and intimacy provide a nicely nurturing environment for her heroine’s unusual adventures.”—The Seattle Times “Breathtaking . . . [Novik] weaves a tale that is both elegantly grand and earthily humble, familiar as a Grimm fairy tale yet fresh, original, and totally irresistible. This will be a must-read for fantasy fans for years to come.”—Pubilshers Weekly (starred review) “An original and fully realized fantastical place guaranteed to enthrall her longtime fans and attract new readers.”—Library Journal (starred review)From the Hardcover edition.

After passing my road test and finally getting my licence (just before my 31st bday!), I rewarded myself by driving to a bookstore and buying two faves!!

wordslinger42 Congratulations!!!! I'm 26 & have had a bad fear of driving for many years, but I'm thinking of getting mine finally! 2w
ShyBookOwl @wordslinger42 I had that fear too. It was debilitating. It held me back for years. Something clicked a few months ago though and I decided to go for it. I'm so glad I did. 2w
wordslinger42 @ShyBookOwl That's so amazing! I'm proud of you!! 💙 Your courage is such an encouragement to me! 2w
ShyBookOwl @wordslinger42 thank you. I hope your moment comes too. If and when it does, don't ignore it!! 💜 2w
Eyelit Awesome! Congrats 🎉 2w
Crazeedi Congrats! You rock!!👏👏❤ 2w
audraelizabeth Congrats! I turn 30 in december and still dont have mine. 2w
marleed Congrats! I‘ve always been intrigued by living someplace where a drivers license was not a dire necessity! 2w
ShyBookOwl @audraelizabeth thanks! During the last few months of being 30 I just decided, like a switch, that it was important to me. A face my fears thing. Is it something you want? 2w
ShyBookOwl @marleed Haha thanks. Yeah, I was raised in a big city. No one in my family drives. I grew up walking and bussing everywhere. Even now, I live in a city with lots of public transport, plus I uber A LOT lol 2w
jb72 Congrats 🎈Plus the Shirley Jackson book is very good. 2w
ShyBookOwl @jb72 thanks! And it is lol I love this edition with the graphic printed directly on the hardcover 😍 2w
CaramelLunacy Amazing! Well worth a bookshop treat. 2w
audraelizabeth Yes, although i hate it and no one in my family has ever tried to teach me. 2w
ShyBookOwl @audraelizabeth if you can splurge on hiring an instructor, I recommend it. My husband tried to teach me but he's been driving since 16 and has developed too many "not by the book" habits. 10 hrs driving with the right teacher made all the difference. I went through a few of them before finding the right fit. 2w
audraelizabeth The one company of 2 in my area refused because Im over 18 and its not required by law. 2w
ShyBookOwl @audraelizabeth whoa!! They don't want your money?? Well, someone must. I'd look up independents. I'm not sure where you live, but in ontario 🇨🇦, websites like kijiji have so many contractors for wtv you need. I hope you can find someone! 2w
audraelizabeth We have 2. 2w
audraelizabeth Me to. 2w
wordslinger42 @ShyBookOwl Thanks for the encouragement 😊 2w

I read some reviews of this before reading, you know, as one does. A lot of people compared it to Beauty and the Beast. There were MAYBE one or two things that were similar, but no! It is not a retelling at all. What had me curious about this was I had heard that Ellen bought the rights to it!
Though it's not my favourite book of the year, I did enjoy it and I'm glad I read it.

I really like the story, and fair tale vibe, but found it difficult to get through. The POV was hard to follow at times, and I found myself getting confused as to what was happening. The romantic relationship seemed to come out of nowhere since there didn‘t seem to be much build up. I also found myself thinking it could have ended several times before it actually did.

Day 2 #readingrush — I rate Uprooted by Naomi Novik somewhere between a pick and meh, leaning slight more to pick. I need to marinate on it a bit.

But I earned badges for book I meant to read last year & read in one spot the entire time. (Although it seems like they‘ve pulled the badges page down . . . probably a good thing since it hasn‘t been working.)

Day 15 of #30JuneBooks
My #booksource is mainly my local library. Whether I'm getting physical books from them or using #libby to borrow audio/ebooks, they are my where I go for books.
My second source is thrift stores, garage sales and library book sales. You get amazing books for super inexpensive and sure they are a little worn but that just adds character.

#bookfitnesschallenge for week four—favorite read so far! I always have a hard time picking just one favorite, so I picked one of each—audiobook and print.😁I loved both of these, and they‘re both so different. From a YA novel in verse that made me think and cry and feel right along with Xiomara, to a fairy tale that takes “evil forest” to a whole new level and then turns it on its head—how can I pick just one?! Turns out I can‘t.😆

1) Fantasy or magical realism
2) I'm terrible at thinking up stuff like this but it would have to be one word, idk why it just would haha. Think, like, 'Uprooted' by Naomi Novik
3) Me and 2 friends after our final exam!! We'd just been trashed (a weird oxford tradition where your friends come and cover you in shaving foam and whatnot to help you celebrate finishing)

This was just fantastic. An unlikely heroine, a creepy creepy evil forest, an intimidating wizard, books of magic, and an arrogant prince... I loved the way Novik took fairy tale conventions in new and surprising directions, and offered depth and heart and beauty along the way. I couldn‘t put this down—except when I got so caught up in the story that I was too worried about what might happen next! I‘m so looking forward to Spinning Silver!

Unexpected library sale #bookhaul! My sister texted last night to ask if I was going—I hadn‘t realized the sale was today! I met up with her & my niece for a lovely morning book browsing. And I can (kind of) blame my sister for the now-heavier TBR shelves. The smaller pile on the bottom is (mostly, maybe?) for a friend who couldn‘t make it to the sale. I loved this book. Lyrical writing, beautifully haunting imagery, STRONG female characters and packed with action. At times, it could be a little confusing to follow. Some characters had multiple names and some of the stuff about the wars and the Wood could have been laid out better. That said, once I understood the Wood's origin tale, I was moved. Bonus, I loved the ending. It felt just right for a standalone novel.

Nute Nice review! 4mo
ShyBookOwl @Nute Thank you! Have you read it? 4mo
Nute No, I haven‘t read it. I thought that it was the first book of a trilogy so I was waiting to collect the two remaining books. I actually purchased her second novel, Spinning Silver, thinking hat I was building the set. I posted a blurb here on Litsy about the second book of the trilogy & a fellow Litten quickly enlightened me that these are standalone novels. No need to collect before reading as they are not related. I haven‘t acted upon that yet. 4mo

ShyBookOwl @Nute I can see why you'd think they were related. They have similar themes and covers! I did like Spinning Silver more (I'm a sucker for how she wove in so many retellings), but Uprooted was great too. I think these are her only 2 standalones. 4mo

13/? An enchanting fairy tale of a book, well written and engaging. The characters and relationships were dynamic and realistic, and the darkness of The Wood created a slow building suspense. There is a ton of plot packed into this novel- I hit the halfway point and couldn‘t believe that the story wasn‘t wrapping up. Not a ton of substance but this book has deep roots in Eastern European folklore and it shows.

I enjoyed this, but I did think it would have been better if it was a series. There were some aspects that I didn‘t think were as developed & then didn‘t make sense (ex. She didn‘t know she had any magic in her & then all of a sudden could use magic as well as a very practiced wizard). I thought the beginning & end were great but the middle bogged down. Overall I enjoyed reading it, & once I got into it, I didn‘t want to put it down. ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
