Girls Burn Brighter
Girls Burn Brighter | Shobha Rao
When Poornima first meets Savitha, she feels something she thought she lost for good when her mother died: hope. Poornima's father hires Savitha to work one of their sari looms, and the two girls are quickly drawn to one another. Savitha is even more impoverished than Poornima, but she is full of passion and energy. She shows Poornima how to find beauty in a bolt of indigo cloth, a bowl of yogurt rice and bananas, the warmth of friendship. Suddenly their Indian village doesn't feel quite so claustrophobic, and Poornima begins to imagine a life beyond the arranged marriage her father is desperate to lock down for her. But when a devastating act of cruelty drives Savitha away, Poornima leaves behind everything she has ever known to find her friend again. Her journey takes her into the darkest corners of India's underworld, on a harrowing cross-continental journey, and eventually to an apartment complex in Seattle. Alternating between the girls' perspectives as they face relentless obstacles, Girls Burn Brighter introduces two heroines who never lose the hope that burns within them. In breathtaking prose, Shobha Rao tackles the most urgent issues facing women today: domestic abuse, human trafficking, immigration, and feminism. At once a propulsive page-turner and a heart-wrenching meditation on friendship, Rao's debut novel is a literary tour de force.

This novel has a lot going for it: good writing overall, well developed characters, interesting plot, and addressing the important issues of human trafficking, poverty, and misogyny. But it suffers from misery fatigue and the end is just ridiculous on the happenstance meter.

Triggers for violence and sexual assault.

I haven‘t finished any books during the readathon as I‘ve been reading this for book club. I‘m 2/3 of the way through and I‘m really enjoying it. It‘s about two girls from India who are determined to make it through many struggles without losing hope. Can‘t wait to see how it ends. #24in48 #hour42

Sweettartlaura Hated it 😕. I kept thinking my ebook didn‘t completely download. At the very least, let them see each other, hear each other. I would have been satisfied if “the door opened as she reached for the handle.” Because after all their misery, without that little bit, I wouldn‘t be surprised if the one in the bathroom committed suicide. Heck, I‘m not convinced she didn‘t 😕 3mo

Only 6 hours so far but not too bad considering we‘ve had a somewhat busy weekend preparing for our baby girl to arrive soon. I would have loved to have spent all weekend only eating sleeping and reading but with all my other readathons adulting gets in the way. Hoping to get a couple more hours in tonight after dinner at the in-laws. #Luna however has spent the day only eating and sleeping 😹

Disappointing 😕
There is so much to slog through here - lots of violence & hopelessness - for the worst ending ever. I truly thought I was missing a page.
I‘m tired of doing the work for an author. I‘m not going to make up my own ending. I need SOMETHING to make sense of this. And if the author won‘t give it, I can only go with 2 ⭐️.

#marchmadness @JenP

Caroline2 I love that, “I‘m tired of doing the work of an author”! Yes!!! I‘ve read a few books lately without proper endings. It just feels so lazy. 🙄 6mo
Sweettartlaura Thanks, @Caroline2 🙂. I‘m a little peeved at a particular show ending this coming Sunday 🐉, and that may have exacerbated my reaction to this. But my Buddy Reader @Jenn1 feels similarly about this ending, so I didn‘t go TOO far. I‘m all for a challenge. But give me SOMETHING - some solid direction, some nod to my suspicions. If I can just pull out whatever I want, I might as well write it myself 💁🏻‍♀️ 6mo
ReneeBijou I am a bit late to comment but I felt cheated by the end. Ok I was completely ticked and the book may have sailed across the room. 🤷🏻‍♀️as I thought about it more I started to think that whatever the reader envisions as the reunion is what the end is. I may see them embrace, someone else may see crying. The end is all of these things. It made me love the book that much more. 6mo
Sweettartlaura @ReneeBijou I just wanted something concrete to happen between them. The one in the bathroom seemed almost suicidal. I know she opened the door, but still, I want to know they saw each other, alive. I could live with that little. But without it, I‘m disappointed 😔 5mo
ReneeBijou @Sweettartlaura I get that. It was upsetting to say the least. It certainly left me wanting more and as it was the climax it felt cut off. Besides what happened to Mohan? I really grew to love that guy even though he was seriously messed up. 5mo

This book has tragedy ramped up to the level of A Little Life. Bad gets worse and you know that more horrific pain and evil is yet to come. Each horror is an important tale but all together it felt like too much. International Women‘s Day seems to be an appropriate day to finish this book. It is beautifully written but so tragic—really really sad!

This one wasn't for me. I struggled to get through it and found myself being easily distracted. I considered bailing and ultimately pushed through, but I'm not sure it was worth it.
The writing is described as beautiful. Maybe it is. But it wasn't for me.
I also thought that the parts that were meant to be horrific weren't entirely unbelievable. What was more challenging was accepting that their paths kept crossing.

This was almost a So-So for me. The story was an important one and the premise was interesting but the writing was disjointed at times and meandered off into stories that detracted from these two women's journeys. This book was also SO heavy, full of so much sadness with no reprieve, even at the end that it left me just relieved it was over.

This harrowing story made me so angry and feel helpless. I wouldn't say I enjoyed it, but I'm glad i read it as it's vulnerable, heartbreaking, and truthful. It truly puts your own privileges into perspective, and you want nothing more than to see some sort of happiness for Poormina and Savitha.

The author called it a "happy story" in an interview, and reading her perspective helped me appreciate this book and the fight these strong woman had.

Graphic, depressing and too much bad. The story that should‘ve highlighted friendship was overshadowed by the constant abuse they suffered. Unnecessary at times. Wish more of their relationship had been revealed.

Weird review: I feel like this should be read but in no way was it enjoyable, simply because the lives of the main characters are fraught with horror. Two girls grow up in poverty in rural India at the turn of the 20th century and continue to be treated horribly with only the memory of their friendship to keep them going. Not an easy read and I wanted more at the end after being gutted by their stories.
