The Great Alone | Kristin Hannah
Alaska, 1974. Untamed. Unpredictable. And for a family in crisis, the ultimate test of the human spirit. From the author who brought you the phenomenon of The Nightingale.

Firstly, I loved that this book was set in Alaska. The descriptions of how to survive in such a remote environment were great. I just didn‘t love the storyline. There were some inconsistencies that an editor or proof reader should have picked up. Plus (without spoiling anything) the way one character kept appearing at every worst possible moment felt a bit implausible and just annoyed me.

“Driveway?” Mama said, staring at the trail through the trees. It looked like it hadn‘t been used in years. Thin-trunked alder trees grew in the path.“Bo‘s been gone a long time. We‘ll have to clear the road of new growth, but for now we‘ll hike in,”Dad said. “#Hike?”Mama said. He set about unpacking the bus. While Leni and Mama stood staring into the trees,Dad divided their necessities into three backpacks and said, “Okay. Here we go.” #QuotsyMay19

⭐⭐⭐⭐ I got sucked in to this one. It's been a while since a book captured me like this. So many terrible things, wrapped up in these pages, yet so good.

So. I started off bored, then I almost quit because I knew some awful shiz was going to happen and I wasn't sure I wanted to take that journey. But then I sucked it up because my book club picked it and I love those bitches. Plus, I have the free audiobook. So I basically 3x listened to it for hours, and I was right, terrible shiz happened. But I started to get attached to my little Alaskan chipmunks, so I slowed it down to (con't below)

MidnightBookGirl Continued: better witness all the abuse, snow, romance, more abuse and power struggle. Things got worse and worse, but at this point I started to root for Alaska to eat up the bad man (and in a way, it did). Then more terrible things happened, but then there was a brief respite. I was almost at 4 stars for my main chipmunk, Lennie, but her complete dumbass knocked it down a whole star because I CAN'T with her stupidity. (Continued agai) 6d
MidnightBookGirl Somehow it worked out, but I still can't forgive her.

This is my second Hannah book and I think she's a good writer. But I think she researches all the bad things that can happen and then just crams it all in instead of spreading the misery. If you enjoy her brand of misery, or can enjoy how throughly she researches the ways to put her characters through the ringer, the you will not be disappointed!
6d
MidnightBookGirl The audio is narrated by Julia Whelan, who is amazing as always. 6d
Reggie Lol, you kinda make me wanna move it up my TBR. 6d

This was me on Sunday! I sat on my patio and read the tagged book and got sunburned. And barely noticed because I was into it. Parts were a little more emotional than my normal taste but the characters and story are great and I would recommend.

This was an emotional, thought-provoking book. The amazing descriptions of Alaska were very real and made me want to some day explore the state, but never to stay. The story moved quickly and I stayed engaged and heartbroken throughout. My only complaint is that the love scenes were ridiculously unrealistic.

I guess I'll go with a so-so, just because I loved the parts about homesteaders and Alaska. I was loving the first part of the book then about half way the characters and the pace got jerky, it totally put me off the story. I wanted to bail but stuck it out hoping it would turn back around but it just got worse as it hurdled to the end.☹

The entire time I was reading this, I osscilated between wanting to stop reading (because it's intense & I needed an emotional break) & wanting to NOT stop reading becsuse I wanted to know what happened! Kristin Hannah hasn't missed yet, in my opinion. This isn't easy to read (abusive husband/father, life-threatening situations), but the payoff was so worth it.

Hi, Littens! I've been in a bit of a reading slump recently & that has translated into not checking into Litsy much. The semester is starting to a close (I'm a university professor) & I'm making a new commitment to reading (and Litsy) as my primary leisure activity!

Hoping this will get me out of said slump. I've yet to read a Kristin Hannah that I haven't liked. ☺

LiteraryinLititz Good luck with the new book! I‘ve heard of so many people in reading slumps lately (including me) but hopefully yours will be over soon! 😁 1mo
SaturnDoo What @LiteraryinLititz said!!!! I'm in a slump of sorts too. 👎👎Can't stay focused...I'm reading just can't stay interested enough in anything to finish. It's not the books, it's me. Maybe all these TBR stacks sitting around that's overwhelming/intimidating me. IDK. Good luck and look forward to having you around more. 1mo

Howseldomtheydo @CouronneDhiver Depends what you like to do on vacation. I‘m not a huge Country Western music fan, but we had a good time checking out the bars and tunes on Broadway. I use trip advisor and instagram to “research” vacation destinations. We also went to Pinewood Social (trendy bowling/bar/restaurant) Nelson‘s Green Briar Distillery, The Grand Ole Opry(backstage tour) and The Parthenon. The Gulch, and 12 South are cool neighborhoods to check out. 1mo
The_Real_Nani Even though I‘m not a country music fan either, I really enjoyed the Country Music Hall of Fame, and the studio tour they do. (Elvis‘s piano!) 1mo

While this book started a little slowly for me, I was HOOKED about a third of the way through and finished it in a single night! The familial “toxic knot” comprised of Ernt, Cora, and Leni plus the tightly knit community of homesteaders, survivalists, the many souls running from and running to something, as well as Alaska herself created a wonderfully rich cast while Hannah‘s storytelling kept me intrigued until the end! I highly recommend! 4/5 ⭐️

I had mixed feelings about this book. I‘ve long been fascinated by Alaska and by people who are rugged enough to live in that environment so I enjoyed that aspect of the novel. However I felt that the last third or so of the book was rushed and a bit too melodramatic. She did a nice job setting up the atmosphere of the 1970s and I found the information on homesteading during that time period to be really interesting. It was a mixed bag for me.

kspenmoll I felt the same way; thought it should have stopped sooner. Beautiful descriptive writing of Alaska & some of her characters but lost me with the non-ending drama. My brother lives in Kenai & I have visited but only in summer! 1mo
Ncostell @kspenmoll That‘s really cool. I hope to visit Alaska some day too, also in the summer! 1mo
marleed I just finished this book. I enjoyed it but thought the ending rushed compared to the detail of the rest of the book. What might have been a significant court finale was brushed aside as though it just takes knowing influential lawmakers. Somehow that bugged me. 1mo

I‘d definitively pick the first half of this book, but I‘d pan the back half. I loved the setting, Alaska‘s wildness is fascinating and was also an apt metaphor for many of the themes of the novel. However, there were too many conflicts, which felt cheap and emotionally manipulative as one predictable trauma after another popped up. There was so much potential in the central conflict, that the rest just became distraction.

sudi Agree, the first half of the book was so good. I was expecting something better as the story went on, but it was a let down. And the ending seemed a little bit like a sitcom 2mo

The beginning was a bit slow, but as the story progressed, it was hard to put the book down. The story opens up your eyes to the hard truth about life for many, who constantly live in fear. The story takes you through a journey of the different types of love we fall for, the hardships of life, teenage angst, the support of a community, and how true love can win in the end. Definitely recommend.

#UnpopularOpinion time. 😣 Maybe this isn't the right book at the right time, or maybe this author isn't for me. But I just couldn't spend 15hrs listening to the story of a woman who chose to leave a life of money & privilege to live in poverty off the grid with her abusive, irresponsible husband. I'm not buying his PTSD made him a jerk. Methinks he was always an abusive a-hole & that's why Cora's parents never liked him. 👇🏽👇🏽

lele1432 I wasn't drawn in by the writing. The 1 black woman is a big "mammy" type caricature with eye-roll descriptions like "saucer-sized hands," she's loud & the narrator makes her sound like a man. Too many clichés, not enough growth for me to keep going. Another unpopular opinion...I do not care for Julia Whelan as a narrator. Every character sounds the same across all books she narrates. Her male voices irritate me. Hard pass all around. #audio #botm 3mo
