Ooo, ANOTHER surprise package from Book Depository arrived today!

Who do I have to thank for adding to my big (and much loved!) #FurrowedMiddlebrow library? 😊

batsy Lovely! This sounds like it might be both serious and sweet. Ah darn it, I'll just add the entire FM catalogue to the TBR 😂 1w
CarolynM Hurrah! My gift to you has arrived! Has the card turned up yet? 1w
LeahBergen @batsy Yeah, that‘s basically what I did. 😆 1w

LeahBergen @CarolynM It‘s from you! Thank you so much; it sounds delightful. 😘😘😘 And no card yet! 😆😆 Who knows when the little package from me will arrive to you? Postage from here to Australia is so stupid; I could pay approximately $23 or the next faster rate was $78!! I chose the slower rate. I hope it gets to you sometime soon. 🙄 1w
CarolynM Yes, it's similar here ☹ I'm with you on the FMBs - I want to read them all @batsy 1w
Cathythoughts Lovely 😁 6d
LeahBergen @CarolynM Your lovely Australian Christmas card arrived today! Thank you so much (and especially for the sweet words 🥰🥰). 4d
CarolynM Oh, I am glad🙂 I really thought I'd posted them in time to get there before Christmas 🙄 Oh well, maybe next year... 4d
LeahBergen @CarolynM I saw that it was post dated in November! 😆 You‘re so on the ball! It was lovely to receive no matter when it arrived. 😊 3d

Thank you so much, @BookishTrish for this perfect #LittleChristmasSwap package! 😍😍 A #FurrowedMiddlebrow book that‘s been on my wish list for ages, lovely chocolates, and Murchie‘s tea. I‘m set up for a cozy day and I love it all!

Thanks for hosting, @bookish_wookish ! This is always such a wonderful swap.

LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads No, because it‘s always Spam tomorrow 😉. Well, I‘m sure Johnny would like some Spam today! 2w
LeahBergen @Dragon It does look good! And it is SO snowy and cold here in Calgary so it‘s perfect. 😊 2w
LeahBergen @melissajayne I love Murchie‘s tea. I‘ve only been to the shop in Victoria once but I order it online quite frequently. 2w
melissajayne @LeahBergen Murchies has an outlet in Langley, BC, which isn‘t too far of a drive; that‘s a good option as well. 2w
Cathythoughts Fab presents ❤️ 2w

Mrs. Lorimer's Quiet Summer | MOLLY. CLAVERING
post image

@LeahBergen Have you read Molly Clavering?
She was friend and neighbor of DE Stevenson and several of her novels recently came out from #FurrowedMiddleBrow #DeanStreetPress too.

This one is supposedly a thinly veiled portrayal of their friendship. I enjoyed imagining it WAS them!
(The tagged book is the same as the one in my photo)

Leftcoastzen Very cool! 3w
LeahBergen What a great edition! I have this one (under the other title) but haven‘t got to it yet. I ONLY got it this past summer. 🤣 3w
LeahBergen Oh, and I have a couple of the Furrowed Middlebrow editions of her books. One was a Twitter prize and I bought the other that was a sequel to it. 😊 3w
elkeOriginal @LeahBergen I look forward to Molly‘s books popping up in #furrowedmiddlebrowclub 😉 3w

The tagged book is my #1, always and forever. Some of the rest are rereads, but they‘re all books I loved this year. #Top21od21

It‘s obvious I ❤️ vintage fiction, but I see a lot of new books on everyone else‘s lists that tempt me to branch out in 2022.

Thanks for tagging me, @Nute and @Ruthiella 😊

I don‘t know who‘s already been tagged, so I‘ll invite anyone who wants to play, because I‘m so curious to see everyone‘s faves.

LeahBergen Oh, Double Spell! Also known as Twin Spell, right? That was a childhood favourite of mine and I own a very cool edition. 😊 1mo
LeahBergen And I‘m glad to see that someone else will list as many oldies as I will. 😆 1mo
Ruthiella I love seeing all the #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub books on this list! I kind of used the Ursula Orange title on my list as a placeholder for them all. 😀 1mo

elkeOriginal So many #furrowedmiddlebrow books! Well done! 1mo
rubyslippersreads @LeahBergen Yep, same book. 💜 that spooky stuff! 😄 1mo
rubyslippersreads @Ruthiella They‘re addictive. 😄 1mo
LeahBergen What is the Felicia book? It‘s the only one I don‘t recognize. 1mo
rubyslippersreads @LeahBergen It‘s about a cat who turns into a little girl. I had to get it through ILL; the cheapest copy I could find was $500! 🙀 1mo
MaureenMc I love this list! 😍 1mo
batsy So many pretty covers! Love seeing the Furrowed Middlebrows and yay Lolly Willowes 💖 1mo
Cinfhen 😍 1mo
quietjenn Same! Working on my list, it's *very* vintage, but I am inspired by others to maybe be slightly more contemporary in the future! 1mo
LeahBergen I didn‘t get the notification that you replied to my question! That book sounds fascinating. 😮 3w

Quentin Williams is a bookseller in 1950s London with a gorgeous model girlfriend and virtually no money. While trying to impress a book dealer, he inadvertently hits upon a ‘get rich scheme‘: he‘ll attempt a forgery of Lord Byron‘s lost memoirs (famously burned by his friends after his death).

I found this a bit slow to start but once it did, I couldn‘t put it down. More comments to come when everyone is finished!

batsy Lovely photo and review 💜 I finished it last night; it didn't quite work for me as I wanted because I found Quentin lacking a bit of personality 😆, but otherwise it was good fun! 2mo
quietjenn I've only read a wee bit, but an hoping to devote some time to it tonight! 2mo
erzascarletbookgasm I‘ve just made a little start 👌 2mo
See All 24 Comments
LeahBergen @quietjenn @erzascarletbookgasm Like I said, I found it a slow start. Quintin‘s narration is (intentionally, I think) a bit plodding but plow on … it DOES pick up. 2mo
batsy @LeahBergen Dweeb! Yes 😂 Agree with you, the topic of forgeries and literary society shenanigans is too good to resist. 2mo
Ruthiella I‘m at 70% and hope to finish tomorrow with luck. It is slow to start and I kept feeling I should like Quentin but he‘s not sympathetic at all. Still, I have no clue how it will all pan out... 2mo
LeahBergen @Ruthiella He‘s surprisingly unsympathetic, isn‘t he? 😆 And I was also (belatedly) struck by the fact that he‘s our first male narrator/male point of view for a Furrowed Middlebrow read, isn‘t he? 🤔 2mo
Ruthiella @LeahBergen Yes! I was thinking that too. 2mo
LeahBergen @batsy Wasn‘t he a dweeb? 😆 I think I was a bit predisposed to like this one as I have such a fascination for the workings of the world of rare books and forgeries, in particular. 2mo
LeahBergen @batsy Oops! I edited a typo in my previous response to you and now my comment has shot to the bottom here, out of order. 😆 2mo
Cathythoughts I‘ve just made a little start too .. @erzascarletbookgasm hopefully later today I‘ll get some read 👍🏻❤️ (edited) 2mo
CarolynM I'm about halfway through. It was a bit slow to start but it seems to be hotting up now. I don't think I'd call Quinton a dweeb - he's awfully manipulative! 2mo
quietjenn A little over a third of the way through now, and I can certainly understand all of your comments about Quentin! I found myself thinking exactly as @Ruthiella the whole time - “not the most sympathetic character, are you Quentin?“ And I actually had to remind myself once or twice that the author was not a dude, because there's something about the way he thinks/talks about Jocasta that irks me. 2mo
Cathythoughts My son & 8 yr old granddaughter here today. I said .. remind me what a dweeb is … Sofia says .. Granny , even I know that , my Dads a dweeb 😁….. also the name Jocasta , had to check it out .. she was married to Oedipus , 🤔🤔🤔 interesting.. slow start , but picking up now 👍🏻 @CarolynM 2mo
CarolynM I completely agree with you about the Quentin/Jocasta dynamic @quietjenn - most unpleasant. I bet your son isn't really a dweeb @Cathythoughts - the way our children see us🙄🤣 2mo
CarolynM I started out hoping the hoax would succeed, now I'm hoping for a spectacular failure. 2mo
LeahBergen @CarolynM Yes! I was rooting for him at first, too. As to the “dweeb” comment: I completely agree with you as to his manipulativeness. It‘s only as I got further on to the ending that I found him such a sad, pathetically verbose little man. If that makes sense? 😆 (edited) 2mo
LeahBergen @quietjenn He‘s just so smug and overbearing. 🙄 2mo
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts 🤣🤣 Oh, your poor son. Aren‘t children rotten and wonderful? And good association with the name Jocasta - I hadn‘t twigged on to that at all. 2mo
Cathythoughts @LeahBergen @CarolynM My sons definitely not a dweeb … that‘s an example of the Irish sense of humour for you … slagging 😂. I hope to get more read today 🤞🏻 I‘m enjoying it 👍🏻 2mo
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts That‘s exactly the sort of humour in my house, too! 😆 2mo
rubyslippersreads I just started but am curious to see where it‘s going. 2mo

#bookmail from today. Now I can join in the #FurrowedMiddlebrow read of the month. Side note: how do you get decent pictures of shiny books like these?

LeahBergen It‘s tricky, isn‘t it?? I‘m glad you‘re joining us for this month‘s #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub read! (edited) 2mo
Cathythoughts That‘s great you‘re joining in … I‘ve only read a few pages … looks good 👍🏻❤️ 2mo
CarolynM Glad to have you in the #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub🙂 I have the same problem with the photos 🙄😆 2mo

My current read and the third Ursula Orange novel that I‘ve buddy read with @shawnmooney . This will be our last read by this author unless her other (2?) novels are republished. 😭 What shall we do, Shawn?? 😭

TrishB Beautiful pic ♥️ 4mo
LeahBergen @TrishB Thanks! 😘 4mo
CarolynM I vote we start lobbying Furrowed Middlebrow to publish the other two Ursula Oranges. I'd love to read them. 4mo

batsy My eyes are drawn to those biscuits 😂 4mo
batsy Although now I've read the synopsis of the book and it sounds so good! 4mo
Cathythoughts Gorgeous picture 💫 4mo
LeahBergen @CarolynM I read somewhere that the other two are a bit weaker and the three they republished are her best … but I still want to read them! 4mo
LeahBergen @batsy Both the book and the biscuits are pretty tasty! 😆 4mo
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts Thanks! 😘 4mo

A Highland family gathers at a country house over the summer of 1948, with numerous visitors and a wedding planned for the end of the holiday.

That right there was enough for me to want to read this but I still found myself surprised at just how much I loved it. Even the “villains” were likeable in their own way. 😆 A lovely story that falls solidly in the “most comforting of comfort reads” camp.

LeahBergen @CarolynM You have the pick for our November read. Feel free to choose a couple (like I did) if you‘d like us to vote or just name your title. 😊 4mo
Tamra Spot on about the “villains” - even they were fun! (edited) 4mo
LeahBergen @Tamra And don‘t you just glory in the idea of Mrs. Leigh being mother-in-law to a circus ringmaster? 🤣🤣 4mo
See All 18 Comments
Ruthiella @Tamra @LeahBergen Yes! Their comeuppance was fun to witness, though I felt maybe Inga got off a little too lightly . 😅 4mo
Tamra @Ruthiella that is true! 4mo
Tamra @LeahBergen bah! Yes that was so imaginative! 😂 4mo
LeahBergen @Ruthiella That she did! 😆 4mo
Cathythoughts Great review.. absolutely comforting I agree … almost finished & then I can read your spoiler ( I know how I want it to end 🤞🏻 4mo
shawnmooney Gah! I loved your reviews so much that, even though this was already on my radar, you‘ve made reading it urgent! 4mo
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts Probably the same way I wanted it to end, too! 😆 4mo
LeahBergen @shawnmooney Well, aren‘t you a doll? 😘😘 4mo
batsy Great review! Also snorting in agreement about your comments on Mrs Leigh and Inga 😆 @LeahBergen @Ruthiella 4mo
LeahBergen @batsy @Ruthiella I did kind of envy Inga‘s effortless glamour. 😆 4mo
CarolynM I'm loving it too. I don't want it to end! I've got something in mind for our next book. I'll post later and check everyone is happy with my choice. 4mo
LeahBergen @CarolynM Perfect! I meant to add before… post your pick when you‘re finished, of course. And yes, isn‘t it delightful? 😊 4mo
quietjenn Yes, to all you‘ve said. I‘m weirdly fond of the recovering Mrs. Leigh. 4mo
LeahBergen @quietjenn Me, too. 😆 4mo

Well, it‘s #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub time again!

I just plucked this one from my “oldies” shelves and I‘ll be starting it this evening. Feel free to join in and we‘ll aim to start chatting about it around the middle of the month, shall we say?

@erzascarletbookgasm @rubyslippersreads @quietjenn @CarolynM @Cathythoughts @Ruthiella @batsy and @Tamra , too!

Ruthiella What a beautiful edition ! 😍 I read the first sentence yesterday, but got no further. This is a holiday weekend coming up in the States, however, so I‘ll hopefully really get started soon! (edited) 5mo
batsy Oh, Leah. Your collection of lovely editions is pure joy 😍 5mo

Table Two | Marjorie Wilenski
post image

And another thoroughly enjoyable read for our #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub!

Table Two consists of a group of female translators working for the Ministry of Foreign Intelligence in the early days of WW2 and no other novel that I‘ve read about this period has so thoroughly described what it must have felt like, from the early “oh, no bombs will fall HERE” to being Blitzed every night.

Great pick, Jenn!

LeahBergen It looks like it is my pick for our September selection. How about I offer up two and let the rest of you vote? 😁 6mo
See All 24 Comments
Ruthiella Excellent pick @quietjenn ! There were so many complexities to discuss and think about for such a short book 😀. @LeahBergen I vote for The Foolish Gentlewoman, purely based on the title! 😆 6mo
CarolynM I'm happy with either but probably leaning towards Apricot Sky. 6mo
BookNAround I bought this one (but haven‘t started it) thanks to all of you. 🤪 6mo
batsy Both choices are really appealing @LeahBergen but I'm going to vote for 6mo
quietjenn So glad you liked it! I agree that it‘s an excellent portrait of life during wartime. As for the next pick, both are tempting and I‘m sure I‘ll read them both eventually, but I‘ve never read Ferguson, so would opt first for Apricot Sky. 6mo
erzascarletbookgasm Haven‘t read both authors. My vote goes to Apricot Sky. Let‘s quickly decide on our next read just because I have a BD discount voucher expiring soon 😛 6mo
Cathythoughts Yes, excellent pick Jenn! I loved this book 👍🏻❤️ 6mo
Cathythoughts @LeahBergen I‘ll go with Apricot Sky too 👍🏻🧡( I don‘t know either book. ) I‘ll probably get both for myself 😁. 6mo
LeahBergen @BookNAround Feel free to join in for discussions whenever you like. Or join “the club”… we have a rotation for choosing a Furrowed Middlebrow to read every two months. 😊 6mo
LeahBergen @Ruthiella @CarolynM @batsy @quietjenn @erzascarletbookgasm @Cathythoughts @rubyslippersreads Okay, with five votes… Apricot Sky wins it for September! 👏🏻👏🏻 6mo
rubyslippersreads Sorry I missed the voting, but Apricot Sky sounds great (and I already own it. 😄) 6mo
quietjenn Woohoo! We'd love to have you @BookNAround and I hope you enjoy Table Two! 6mo
LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads I thought you owned it! 6mo
rubyslippersreads You should definitely join us @BookNAround 😊 6mo
rubyslippersreads @LeahBergen I actually own both. 😄 6mo
Centique I have stacked this, it sounds so good! Have you read Black Out and All Clear by Connie Willis? Those are the first books that made me feel the claustrophobia of bomb shelters and the chaos of trying to keep working during the Blitz. They are time travel novels though which might not be your thing? 6mo
LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads Obviously. 🤣 6mo
LeahBergen @Centique I haven‘t read those but my husband has! I really liked The Doomsday Book so I‘m definitely not averse to a little time travel. 😄 6mo
