The Ghost and Mrs. Muir
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir: Vintage Movie Classics | R. A. Dick
22 posts | 15 read | 33 to read
The basis for Joseph L. Mankiewiczs cinematic romance starring Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison. Burdened by debt after her husband's death, Lucy Muir insists on moving into the very cheap Gull Cottage in the quaint seaside village of Whitecliff, despite multiple warnings that the house is haunted. Upon discovering the rumors to be true, the young widow ends up forming a special companionship with the ghost of handsome former sea captain Daniel Gregg. Through the struggles of supporting her children, seeking out romance from the wrong places, and working to publish the captain's story as a book, Blood and Swash, Lucy finds in her secret relationship with Captain Gregg a comfort and blossoming love she never could have predicted. Originally published in 1945, made into a movie in 1947, and later adapted into a television sitcom in 1968, this romantic tale explores how love can develop without boundaries, both in this life and beyond. With a new foreword by Adriana Trigiani. Vintage Movie Classics spotlights classic films that have stood the test of time, now rediscovered through the publication of the novels on which they were based.

I‘ve always enjoyed this movie (1947), although I haven‘t seen it in awhile. I came across the #audiobook on Audible Plus. It‘s only 5 hours or so and is quite enjoyable. Very easy listening and soothing to listen to around bedtime. I will say I like the character of Lucy better in the movie. She‘s a bit too uptight and naive for my tastes sometimes in the book. But the narrator is great! Such a fun ghost story. 3.75⭐️

rubyslippersreads One of my very favorite books, movies, and TV shows. 1y
JenlovesJT47 @rubyslippersreads I didn‘t know it was a tv show until after I finished the book! Would love to see it, maybe I can track it down somewhere. The movie is great! I‘m a big fan of Gene Tierney 🤓 1y
rubyslippersreads @JenlovesJT47 I think there are episodes on YouTube. Edward Mulhare makes quite a dashing Captain Gregg. 1y

I thought this was a lovely, sweet little read. It‘s quite humorous, too. I loved the characters. I would class it as more of a novella than a novel as it‘s fairly short at under 200 pages.

Always Loved the movie with Rex Harrison and wanted to read the book. The movie followed the book pretty closely with only some minor understandable changes. I enjoyed the audio book and can‘t wait to watch the movie again.

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I adore this movie! I‘ll definitely have to check the book out. ❤️ 2y

This book is so sweet, and easy on my mind. I actually saw the movie first (with Rex Harrison and Gene Tierney), and it's pretty faithful to the book.

I don't know quite was I was expecting but whatever it was this wasn't it. I had trouble deciding if this was a pick or a so-so but there were some clever turns of phrase & some lines that made me laugh &, most of all, reflections from Lucy on the joys of quiet and solitude (like the one above) which pushed this over to a pick for me. All the same I'm glad it was short & that it's over. I suspect I'd like the movie much better, maybe I'll try it.

Lauren.Archer I did not know this was a book. I just love the movie 4y

I didn't much mind the Victorian attitudes on display in this book as it was actually written then- I even found Lucy's silliness a little charming, esp when she waxes poetic about the quiet life she's arranged for herself- but this infuriated me. She (pretty much) came to her senses but I'm now glad this book is so short as I'm not sure I want to spend much more time with her. 😠

I have not read the book... yet. The movie that I did see is Old Hollywood. You can find it shown on TCM, now and then. Romance with a handsome #ghost sea captain. #octoberxfiles #ghosts

Cathythoughts Love old Hollywood so much ❤️ 4y
DivineDiana @Cathythoughts As do I! Love the writing, the ability to suggest rather than be explicit and the costumes! 4y

MaGoose I haven't read the book, but have seen the b/w movie with Rex Harrison and Gene Tierney, so yes, a great Old Hollywood movie. I also vaguely remember the TV series with Hope Lange that ran from the late 60s to early 70s. Although the series was cute, the movie is better. I borrow the movie from my local library once in a while. 4y
Dragon I love the movie 🎥 I‘ll rewatch it whenever the TC Channel plays it. 👻❤️ 4y

The movie was fantastic so I am on a quest for the book.

acg I read the book years ago and liked it, but not near as much as I love the film. (But my love for the film knows no end so there's that) 7y
quirkyreader I found my copy in a charity shop. Try looking there. 7y
rubyslippersreads I love the book only slightly less than the movie (and remember the TV show fondly as well). The book is available on Amazon as both a paperback and for Kindle. 6y
