3/5⭐ The magical realism is stunning, but the book overall just isn't my cup of tea. #booked2022

Whimsical, funny, and filled with beautiful writing. I love magical realism, but this one was almost a little too over-the-top at times. I felt kind of let down by the end, but really enjoyed this book for the most part.

My #IncludesARecipe book for #Booked2022… it contains several of them, and I‘m planning to try a couple of Tita‘s recipes myself. 😋

Chocolat Amer | Laura Esquivel

Years ago I read one book by Esquivel and disliked it. Now I've read my second book by her and disliked it again. I'm just not in her targeted group. Too much of the drama. Oh, and even more drama. Aaaaand a bit more drama. Then add some magical realism that is so absurd, it made me laugh. Of course I kindly refused Google Books suggestion to buy the next volume of the series. Thanks, but not thanks.

I recommend a lot of books and it all depends on the person. However, I do tend recommend these the most:

1. Interview with the Vampire - Anne Rice
2. Snow Flower and the Secret Fan- Lisa See
3. Lamb, the Gospel According to Biff- Christopher Moore
4. Molokai- Alan Brennert
5. Like Water for Chocolate -Laura Esquivel
6. Outlander -Diana Gabaldon

I finished the last crazy chapter of this magical realism story with breakfast this morning. I enjoyed the interweaving of the story with recipes and the descriptions of making the food which made it a perfect choice for #FoodAndLit. However, I did not enjoy the central love story at all, and I was disappointed in the ending although I knew what was coming from other reviews.

Despite the looming specters of death and heart-break, Like Water For Chocolate reads like a well-written rom-com. It‘s certainly a lot more fun than, say, One Hundred Years Of Solitude. It‘s easy to read, but it‘s not without substance. The recipes are a neat hook, but that‘s not all there is to love about this short, bittersweet family saga. Since I was reading Mexican Gothic for my #Booked2021 LatinX author but bailed on it, I immediately picked up this one, which I'd never read. (Also have never seen the movie.) Would have read it in one sitting if it hadn't been so late last night. LOVED it. Magical realism is one of my favorite genres.

I‘m not sure exactly what I expected from this book, which I have heard people rave about for years. But it wasn‘t this. All of the characters were basically horrible and magical realism is just not my thing. Meh. At least it was short. 😖

Ruthiella Yeah, I know enough about myself as a reader to know I wouldn‘t appreciate this book. Magic realism is not my bag! 2y
Texreader I felt the same way about this book! 2y
Amiable @Ruthiella I periodically give the genre another try. And then think “nope, still hate it.” 😬😀 2y
Amiable @Texreader I am perplexed—I know this book has gotten so much love. But I was disgusted by everyone (except Dr. John) and kept reading only because I thought the book would redeem itself at some point. When I finished I literally threw it on the floor. 😖 2y

For Spanish V in high school, we watched the movie during class. Kinda can‘t believe the teacher got away with it, cuz it was kinda risqué ??
I read the English translation of the book, but it is one that I like to revisit periodically. It‘s like a good adult bedtime story: romance, magical happenings, rebelling against crazy family members and recipes!!

Watch the movie 1st in this case. It will help it go down easier! #throwbackthursday

I watched this movie in one of my high school Spanish classes and intended to read the book soon after, but I never did.

Now, some 13 or 14 years later, I can finally mark it as read! A totally weird but oddly sweet novel about love ultimately wining. Couldn't quite mark it as a Pick and So-So does it no justice, so I chose not to officially review it.

If you want to be charmed but also bewildered, then this short little novel may be for you!

This book was on my kryptonite list for 2020. It is not at all what I expected. I did not like the characters or the storyline. The only character I even cared about was Gertrudis. Mama was abusive. Pedro is an asshat. Tita is wishywashy. Rosaura is a terrible sister and mother.

*RE-READ* My only complaint about this book is I always want more of the magical realism that is so fun and beautiful in this book. Gertrudis‘ bit is my favorite. Otherwise this is such a beautiful story of family, food, and love (all kinds), and maybe even what happens when we are denied these things. I would absolutely read this a third time. 176/1,001 #1001Books #RoryGilmoreChallenge

I always look for new recipes online, inevitably finding one attached to a story. They have become a huge pet peeve for me... I just want the recipe, not a story.
I really enjoyed the story itself here, I just couldn't past how much it felt like one of those recipe blogs. Because of that, I read it in one sitting, to avoid the risk of not picking it up again.

kgriffith While I do like the ability to jump to the “recipe card,“ I enjoy the stories if they're well-written and not trying to be too cutesy or clever. Something for everyone, I suppose! :) 3y
JoyfulChaos That's very fair. I do, in general, mean the ones I cannot jump to. They have a story, some of the ingredients, story, some directions, add a (not so clever) adaptation. They just get on my nerves. Lol 3y

The book follows Tita, a passionate girl who had the misfortune to be born the youngest in a family where the youngest girl never marries so she can take care of her mother. Tita‘s emotions have a magical effect on everybody at the ranch, especially the emotions she has when she cooks. I think some things get lost in the translation from Spanish to English & there were some cultural things I didn‘t fully understand but it was very interesting.

I picked this up for an #ownvoices read as part of a #habitica reading challenge. The description sounded right up my alley- recipes, history, and a touch of the fairy tale. The reality was a good deal stranger. There were several bizarrely sexual scenes and mystical elements mixed in with references to Mexican history and step- by- step recipes.
The whole thing was very jarring.
