Gideon the Ninth
Gideon the Ninth | Tamsyn Muir
Gideon the Ninth is the most fun you'll ever have with a skeleton. The Emperor needs necromancers. The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman. Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead bullshit. Tamsyn Muirs Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap off the page, as skillfully animated as necromantic skeletons. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. But her childhood nemesis wont set her free without a service. Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will be become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier. Without Gideons sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die. Of course, some things are better left dead. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

This book took a little bit of time to hook me - then I finished the second half in a day. I did almost nothing but read. Worth it!
I‘m excited to read more from this world.

Unpopular opinion! I called this one a DNF after 20% read. The reasons why are many. First, it tried to be a blend of Sci-Fi and Fantasy and it didn't work for me. I felt it needed to be pure Fantasy. Second, the world building was lacking and it made the plot stilted. Third, hated the characters. The final nail in the coffin was the plot which was very weak. So many loved this one and I don't understand why. Sigh... Total was of my time!

TheSpineView Needless to say, I will not try to finish at a later date or read anything else in the series. #SeriesLove2023 @Andrew65 3w

What a fun ride! This looks like a fantasy novel, but! It‘s actually a sci-fi And Then There Were None. All of the characters are just miserable in the beginning, but they grow on you, rather unlike the Christie novel. #pop2023 #modernretellingofaclassic

80 pages in, and this still feels like a chaotic mess. My elder kid likes this series so maybe I'll try to revisit it later, but for now I just am not feeling it.

Nessavamusic I bailed on this too! 2mo
ImperfectCJ @Nessavamusic Glad to know I'm not alone! I've been a lot quicker to bail on books than I used to. It might be that I'm growing jaded and impatient with age, or maybe it's just that I have less time to read after spending most of my day yelling at kids to get off my lawn or complaining about the work ethic of younger generations. (And since sarcasm doesn't always convey well in comments, I should point out that I do neither of those things.) 2mo
Nessavamusic @ImperfectCJ same, if I‘m going to give a book 2 or less stars I try to bail. I do occasionally hate read finish things, especially if I own the book. 😂 2mo
ImperfectCJ @Nessavamusic My teens love when I hate read. For some reason, they get a kick out of seeing me get worked up about books, and apparently it's most amusing when I'm ranting. 2mo

I don‘t know what it is about this book, because I genuinely feel like I should love it..l but I keep losing interest. This is the 3rd time I‘ve tried reading it and bailed. There have been some hilarious lines and I like the characters, I just continually pick up other titles rather than finishing this one. I made it 200 pages before giving up this time 🤷‍♀️

Confusing and hard to follow in some parts but still a great read. I have to admit, I started it once and it didn't really draw me in but gave it one more chance and ended up liking it a lot. A pick!

@TheAromaOfBooks This was my #BookChain read for 5th prompt.

claudiuo @TheAromaOfBooks Talking about #BookChain... After reading this book I was stumped as far as prompt 6: title with half as many letters as this book. lesbian swordswoman in space. lesbian necromancer that she has to protect but has been her archenemies her whole life. reluctant teamwork & secrets revealed. obsessed with Gideon &her sass & rage. slightly confused by all the character names & nicknames the whole time &the ending made me sob so hard my roommate heard me from another room. pretty sure I‘ll read the second one but this def more fantasy than romance so don‘t get it twisted

I love complex characters and characters in this book definitely were that xD But at the same time this book had way too many characters, and they had long names + nick names. That was overwhelming.

I loved the atmosphere but hated the writing style.

I think the plot was decent but the writing style made it feel more confusing than it otherwise would have been.

Just finished the tagged for the #nsr22 Grimdark category. Absolutely loved it!! This & Hundred Thousand Kingdoms are easily my favorites for fantasy.

Anyone have a suggestion for a quick read in the Sword & Sorcery category? I‘d love to finish the fantasy section by the end of year.

For Sci-fi, I read these 2, plus a ton of Ruby Dixon‘s sci-fi romances which don‘t really seem to fit these categories. Might finish 1 more if I get a chance🤷‍♀️

Nessavamusic Great job! Sword & Sorcery and short generally don‘t go hand and hand, but I can recommend this indi! 6mo

What a strange world we live in... Social media now decides what books go on sale (read: are worthy). That is not a slight on this book, which I've never read. Just an observation.

julesG Weird! 6mo
ravenlee Isn‘t this just a variation on bestseller lists? It‘s just something very specific that‘s driving the popularity. 6mo
ShyBookOwl @ravenlee Good point. Seems less jarring when you put it that way 6mo
ravenlee Not to say it isn‘t weird, but I‘ve always found bestseller lists to be a strange thing. Highlighting and discounting books that are already popular, to make them more popular, based largely on existing publicity efforts and “word of mouth” - so booktok seems like a pretty logical progression to me. 6mo
ShyBookOwl @ravenlee Agreed. Litsy is my only social media platform, and things like tiktok seem built upon the premise that ppl have no attention span, which seems counterintuitive to book culture. So there's a clash there that confuses me. When my 14 yr old nephew scrolls tiktok I get an instant migraine, so imagining his peers deciding which books get popular boggles me 😅 Maybe I'd get it if I participated 🤷🏽‍♀️ 6mo

Then I reread it and I‘m all, “WHAT IS THIS COOL, PERFECT BEAUTY WITH ITS GORGEOUS ATMOSPHERE AND SNARK AND GENERALIZED AWESOMENESS AND WHY DID I NOT LOVE IT WITH EVERYTHING IN ME THE FIRST TIME BECAUSE IT. IS. EXCELLENT.”

Nobody told me this amazing book was going to be a mystery first and foremost! I loved it, there was such a good dynamic between characters, the lore is sort of thrown at you, because Gideon as a character doesn't necessarily understand it, and it all flows so well. I could not stop reading this, and I am so glad I finally saw for myself what the well-earned hype was about. 100% recommend.

This failed to capture my attention by not introducing the main problem until 30% (over 5 hours) in. Until then, Gideon is just messing around while her necromancer is off doing secret stuff. At 71%, Disinterest has shifted into active dislike so it‘s time to throw in the towel. I feel like the world building has been weak, and what‘s up with Gideon being enslaved(ish), but reading comics often enough to compare to real life situations?? #LGBTQ?

So far, this has taken entirely too long to get to the hook, the actual plot and problem. Gideon has just been wandering around aimlessly, doing random stuff while waiting for Harrow, without even knowing what Harrow is doing. Today's card is the Hierophant, which focuses on tradition, ceremony, and conformity. I chose Gideon the Ninth, because of the way Harrow is so held captive by the traditions of Ninth House and how Gideon is...well, not. 😁 Their back and forth in this story was so mesmerizing! ❤📖❤

I really liked it! Gideon is such an engaging character, and once the pace picks up it doesn‘t stop. I‘m a baby about scary stuff, and I ended up making a point of not reading it at night, but more because of little jump scare moments than anything else. I was a little disappointed that so much of the ending was a surprise, but it makes sense that a book with sequels would introduce new elements. Can‘t wait for the next one!
