Lincoln in the Bardo | George Saunders

Pickpick

My goodness this was such a unique, strange, and fantastic book. It takes place just as the Civil War is starting and follows President Lincoln mourning the death of his young son. With pieces of history )and ghosts!) floating through the novel, this made me smile, cry, and wonder at the power of the written word. Brilliant on #audio with more than 150 narrators, led by David Sedaris and Nick Offerman. So good!

Scochrane26 I read the physical book but have heard the audio is the best way to read it. It was a weird book for me at first, but once I got used to the format, I loved it. Still think about Lincoln‘s grief when this book is mentioned. 2d
Tamra It‘s my absolute favorite audio experience ever. 💕💕 2d
DrSabrinaMoldenReads Hmmm..I might try this on audio. I have not been able to get into them 2d

Daydream: A Novel | Hannah Grace

Catching up on reviews. Finished this in #audio a couple of weeks ago. Nearly rated it so-so as the story was a little worn feeling and so predictable (not in a good way). But the characters were well written and I enjoyed seeing them grow as individuals and as a couple.

Loved this on #audio Friends to lovers, she buys a bus on a drunken whim and he helps fix it up. They both have challenges in their pasts and do the work for themselves and each other. And I loved his family so much! Highly recommend!

KathyWheeler They gave the synthesized voice a name?! I won‘t listen to these. (edited) 4d
GingerAntics I‘m intrigued to know what this sounds like… but I won‘t listen to an entire audiobook of it. @KathyWheeler synthesised voices have had names for a long time. I don‘t know how to look it up on android, but on iPhone you can choose which voice is “Siri.” There is the “Siri” voice, then “David,” “Oliver”… it depends on what accent you want it to speak in and if you want it to be male or female as to what the names are. I have mine set to Oliver. 3d
GingerAntics @KathyWheeler Oliver is a lovely sounding British bloke! Anytime I use Siri (which is rarely) people always ask what it is. He has a very pleasant voice. I‘ve even had me read books in the past. I wouldn‘t pay for an audiobook made with one (even Oliver) though. That‘s ridiculous. There are plenty of voice actors looking for work to get a real person. 3d
CSeydel @GingerAntics Exactly. Most of us are also familiar with “Alexa”, Amazon‘s voice-activated AI assistant (although my family uses “Echo” as our wake word). Funny, I use the British male voice for Siri too, but I never knew he had a different name. He still goes by Siri on my (old) phone. Anyway, this audiobook is “free” - that is, included in my Spotify subscription - and I‘m assuming it‘s a book that wouldn‘t have an audio version otherwise. 3d
CSeydel (Cont‘d) … but it‘s the camel‘s nose, isn‘t it? If people get used to AI audiobook narrators, it‘s inevitable that they‘ll expand to mainstream books that would ordinarily hire a professional narrator. 3d
GingerAntics @CSeydel that‘s true… it‘s a slippery slope. I went and checked… the names have apparently gone away. Depending on what iOS your phone is running, it might still have names. I don‘t think it really matters either way. It‘s a slippery slope we need to be careful of. 3d
KathyWheeler @GingerAntics I know that about Siri and Alexa. To me, that‘s different than giving an audiobook synthesized voice a name. I don‘t really know why . Maybe because I‘m not listening to something long and involved with them, so I don‘t care. But it almost feels like with naming virtual voices, the companies are trying to humanize them to make it more acceptable. I heard some books using those voices and haven‘t liked one yet. 3d
GingerAntics @KathyWheeler that is a fair point. 1d

An Evil Heart: A Novel | Linda Castillo
post image
Pickpick

An Evil Heart is sit in the small town of Planters Mill, Ohio. The 15th installment of the Kate Burkholder Series by Linda Castillo sees Kate Burkholder facing her most guersome murder, yet. A young Amish man is killed with a crossbow. The wound is something the corner has only seen once before, and that was an accidental shooting of a foot. Who would want to kill an Amish man like that?

I really enjoyed this book. I didn't ⬇️

MonicaLoves2Read suspect the culprit until right at the end. I love this series, and it amazes me that Castillo can still keep it fresh and new. Burkholder has grown so much since the first book. All the characters have grown along with her. I was glad that Tomasetti and her are finally tying the knot. I highly recommend this series. Though these books can be read as stand-alones, I suggest reading them in order so that you can get to know all the characters.

A quick novella in the Kate Burkholder Series by Linda Castillo. It's a dark, foggy night, and Kate gets called out. An Amish man has been attacked by an animal. Before she knows it, there are 2 other attacks. One at a farm, and the other 2 little Amish boys out fishing at night. What kind of animal could it. 4⭐️

This psychological thriller follows an author whose wife has gone missing, or has she? Unreliable narrators abound and you spend much of the story not quite sure what is happening. I really liked the author/publisher perspective and I‘m always a fan of an isolated island filled with strange inhabitants. Fun on #audio

Shamed is the 11th book in the Kate Burkholder Series by Linda Castillo. The small town of Planters Mill, Ohio, is shocked when an Amish grandmother is brutally murdered. Kate Burkholder is the Chief of Police and comes upon the scene. Not only is the grandmother killed, but her special needs granddaughter is missing. Burkholder is not being told the truth by the Bishop or family. Will Burkholder get to the truth before it's too late?⬇️

Castillo has grown Kate Burkholder so
during these 11 books, though she still takes chances. I enjoy learning a little bit about the Amish as I read these books. All of the characters have developed, and Castillo has not lightened the suspense any. If you enjoy Police Procedural books, then you ought to give the Kate Burkholder Series a try.
