Pickpick

People have been recommending this book to me for years.
Now that I have finally read it I have that feeling you get when you realize that there are people in the world who really know you.
But about the book; I loved the way it was told. Each character who participated in telling the story had their own distinct and familiar (as in “I know her!”)voice.
The story was a complete/nothing missing/ever evolving gem....

runswithscissors007 about a family sharing the experience of living in a remote village in Zaire and each member coming through it full scathed (is that even a word?) and shaped by the people, by the politics, by the natural world so textured and full of subtle and not so subtle truths and also, of course shaped each other. 14h

3 day book sale. Haul from day 1. I will be back. 😬. I grabbed Suite Francais because when I listened to it on audiobook I knew nothing about it so the ending intrigued/ surprised me and this copy has an interesting bunch of appendixes that I am looking forward perusing for closure lol!

The Lost Words: A Spell Book | Robert Macfarlane, Jackie Morris

Pickpick

Oh the otters! So clearly present and accounted for. Oxford children's dictionary got it remarkably wrong.

It's taken me longer to ponder this book than it would have if my kiddos were still small. it's a rainy day lamenting yet delighted sort of book.

The book is obviously a labour of love for the lost words and for our kids. I admire someone who can act on their belief and passion. And when they can do it in such a talented, tender way..💓 💗

Hooray! Finally reading this!! So far the language and imagery is a bit like drinking from a firehose but not in an unpleasant way 😄. And this quote feels like it sums up part of the last book I read “...I attempted briefly to consecrate myself in the public library, believing every crack in my soul could be chinked with a book...”. Kind of pleasing to have that summation of the last book in the new book.

Book club book for January. Second read so I listened to it. Got so much more out of it. The idea of being a vessel for others‘ ideology vs developing the skill of considered understanding of self. A messy messy teeter totter of guilt, compassion, loyalty and intelligence. #jumpstart2020

keys_on_fire This is my book club‘s pick for January too, although I haven‘t started it yet! 😬 1w
runswithscissors007 @keys_on_fire it should be a quick-ish read even tho it is a bit page-y. I believe in you! Lol! 1w

Deadwood | Pete Dexter

Pickpick

I have an inkling that this may just be my fav read of 2020. I was dubious. For the first part of the book women were only referred to as “the whores”. But then three of the five sections of the book were dedicated to telling the stories of some fabulously compelling women. Their stories were conveyed with charm, compassion and beautifully woven layers. The best part is this observation only scratches the surface!🖤 #jumpstart2020

The Reason You Walk by Wab Kinew finished the year off with some serious introspection. Beginning the year with Deadwood by Pete Dexter; lush story telling and characters.
Hope I am doing this right! @BookNAround

Nute I like when a story or writing is described as “lush.” That is such a cool word! I stacked that book simply because you used that word to describe it!😁 2w
runswithscissors007 @nute I definitely plan to find another Pete Dexter book to sink in to!

#jumpstart2020 Just guessing at how to enter this challenge! 😬. Planning to finish 2 for sure... 3 is my stretch goal. Some of these goals I see are super impressive... but I will be impressed with myself if I get close to 3. I think i‘m supposed to tag someone but I forget who! Please bear with me😄

Clwojick Hey! To join the challenge you just have to use the #JumpStart2020 hashtag. If you have any questions about the event, feel free to reach out. Happy to see you‘ll be joining us and good luck! ❤️ 3w

Anyone else see Gwin the marten from Inkheart in this pic? (Picture taken of a portion of a weird diorama in a glass coffee table in a cottage we rented up north ..)
