The Lido
The Lido | Libby Page
A tender, joyous debut novel about a cub reporter and her eighty-six-year-old subject—and the unlikely and life-changing friendship that develops between them. Kate is a twenty-six-year-old riddled with anxiety and panic attacks who works for a local paper in Brixton, London, covering forgettably small stories. When she’s assigned to write about the closing of the local lido (an outdoor pool and recreation center), she meets Rosemary, an eighty-six-year-old widow who has swum at the lido daily since it opened its doors when she was a child. It was here Rosemary fell in love with her husband, George; here that she’s found communion during her marriage and since George’s death. The lido has been a cornerstone in nearly every part of Rosemary’s life. But when a local developer attempts to buy the lido for a posh new apartment complex, Rosemary’s fond memories and sense of community are under threat. As Kate dives deeper into the lido’s history—with the help of a charming photographer—she pieces together a portrait of the pool, and a portrait of a singular woman, Rosemary. What begins as a simple local interest story for Kate soon blossoms into a beautiful friendship that provides sustenance to both women as they galvanize the community to fight the lido’s closure. Meanwhile, Rosemary slowly, finally, begins to open up to Kate, transforming them both in ways they never knew possible. In the tradition of Fredrik Backman, The Lido is a charming, feel-good novel that captures the heart and spirit of a community across generations—an irresistible tale of love, loss, aging, and friendship.

I can't put my finger on exactly why, but this book grated on me like I've not experienced in a long time. Perhaps going into it with high expectations did me no favours. This would probably fall into the category of summer/beach reads as it's of medium length and has little to no substance.

Do you remember all the books that you own? I've totally forgotten about this book til I was looking through a file of books photo on my phone. I won this copy from a giveaway last year but still haven't read it yet 🙈 I know..I'm feeling terrible about it too.

MelissaSue81 Don‘t feel terrible! I feel like the books that I own are the ones that I will get to “sometime” as I‘m always trying to keep up with my library pile or netgalley or something.. but this book was one of my favorites of 2018. I think “charming” is overused when describing books but this one was. 2mo

“Love is love... just like a tree is a tree. It can be a sapling or a hundred-year-old oak, but it still has roots and life and is at the mercy of the seasons.”

There were many things about this book I genuinely enjoyed: the intergenerational female relationships, the community coming together, the focus on growth through transitions and change, and the tender portrayal of anxiety. Glad I read it! Makes me ready for summer!

I spotted this book somewhere on social media a while ago. I think it was released in England/Europe before North America and consequently I struggled to find it again. It was the elusive “book with a blue cover” for about a year, luckily the Gods smiled on me and I was able to nail down the title again. It‘s just a delight of a book. I bought a new bather yesterday so I can start doing laps at my outdoor neighbourhood Lido, if it ever warms up.

This book has inter generational friendships, female empowerment and a strong sense of community all of which I loved. That the writer expresses such lovely strong emotions about swimming was the cherry on the cake. For some it may be a little too saccharine but I found it joyful and uplifting even if I did shed a tear or two (to the consternation of the air steward who was serving me!) ⬇️

Itchyfeetreader Oh and thanks to @BookNAround who had this on her #newyearwhodis list which the lovely @monalyisha organised. I clearly did not make it through this book in Jan but I did get to it and am so glad I did! 4mo

Between a Pick and a So-So. It‘s about a friendship between a young journalist who struggles with panic attacks and an elderly woman who is mourning the death of her husband. The two work together with the neighbors to try to save the local swimming pool (lido, a term that was new to me) from corporate closure. The parts about Rosemary remembering her marriage brought me to tears, but overall it wasn‘t a home run for me. A bit over-sweet, maybe?

I really enjoyed the characters in this one. I also really liked the portrayal of a main character with anxiety, though I didn't like how she "resolved" her anxiety. The love stories were strong. I especially loved the flashbacks of Rosemary and George. I enjoyed the way sexuality was celebrated throughout the novel, never once seen as something to be ashamed of, but still sweet too. The storyline was at times a bit slow. Read for #LMPBC #round3

LIDO (noun): a public, open-air swimming pool or beach

A reprieve in the city, a destination, a vacation, a daily-occurance, a piece of history, but will it still be open for years to come for all to enjoy? Can a mismatched group of friends save the day? Chapters of current day mixed with chapters of history/back story offers, hope and a backdrop to love.

Perfect for fans of @FredrikBackman and "The Man Called Ove"

CarolynM I've looked at this one a couple of times. Might be one for my summer reading list🙂 11mo

Sweet book set in Brixton area of London. 86 year old Rosemary has lived there all her life and loves her neighborhood, centered around the Lido (community pool). 20 something Kate has panic attacks, is a bits and pieces writer for the local paper and hasn‘t ventured out of her communal home. They meet, swim and band together with the community to save the Lido from development. Sweet light uplifting read.

As refreshing as a jump in the pool, the characters in The Lido sparkle with life, love, loss and humour. The glimpses into Rosemary's past show her from independent teen to wise and wiley widow, a counterpoint to panic stricken Kate, who wants to feel worthwhile and to actually LIVE life. The two come together to fight to save the local Lido - complete with rubber ducks, wetsuits, and a fantastic sense of community. Fantastic read!

The first quarter was a slow start, but the lovely writing and engaging characters won me over. While fairly predictable, the unusual friendship that develops between a young female journalist and an 87 yo widow as they fight to stop the closure of their local lido is sweet and fresh. And this story speaks to how local landmarks help unify a community and often become a home and refuge. 4/5🏊‍♀️

Reading The Lido in The Rose Main Reading Room at NYPL. The book is about an elderly woman trying to save her neighborhood swimming pool and the disconnected young journalist assigned to cover the story.
