Frankenstein - The Modern Prometheus
Frankenstein - The Modern Prometheus | Mary Wollstoncraft Shelley
As a young boy, Victor is obsessed with studying outdated theories of science that focus on achieving natural wonders. When he witnesses lightning strike an oak tree, splitting it in two, he is inspired to harness the power of lightning. His mother dies of scarlet fever weeks before he leaves for the University of Ingolstadt in Germany. At university, he excels at chemistry and other sciences, and develops a secret technique to imbue inanimate bodies with life. Piecing together the detritus of butcher shops and dissecting rooms, the doctor fashions an eight-foot-tall creature whose loathsome appearance fills even his creator with repulsion. Abandoned by his maker, rejected with fear and disgust by everyone he encounters, the enraged and embittered monster goes on a murderous rampage, determined to destroy Frankenstein by striking at those closest to him... KAO Hmm. This is called chapter 9 in my version. I just checked, and the very last chapter is 24. This will keep me motivated to keep up, since our chapter labels are different! 2h

dabbe @KAO You might be reading the original version, published in 1818, which only has 23 chapters. The second edition, which was edited by Mary Shelley, is usually the one that's read more; it was published in 1831. 2h
KAO @dabbe My cover does say “The original classic text.” No problem—I‘ll keep up! 2h

Bookwormjillk Come on Frank 1d
dabbe Of course, blame the help! Victor is now responsible for two deaths for not being forthcoming regarding his role in this fiasco. It seems that the creature is wreaking his revenge on Victor for abandoning him. All innocence is lost. 1d
See All 13 Comments
KAO Meanwhile, ever since the beginning of this book, I‘ve been amazed that this takes place in Switzerland, of all places! So are these characters British transplants—and I missed that somehow? Or are they really speaking German, French, Italian, or Romansh (official languages of Switzerland), and we‘re just getting an English translation?? Just seems odd to me! 23h
KAO Okay—I had forgotten about the letters at the beginning! Robert Walton wrote to his family members from Russia and then later from his sea voyage about meeting this very sad fellow traveller (Victor, I assume), who spoke “in English, although with a foreign accent” and who later shared his tragic tale. I know he needed to be from a mysterious place, but Switzerland? 23h
Clare-Dragonfly Victor continues to be incredibly self-centered, insisting that he is the most tormented! 23h
ElizaMarie Poor Justine!!! 20h
Sparklemn Why didn‘t anyone at the trial ask how she could have had the physical strength to strangle a healthy young man with her bare hands? 🤷🏼‍♀️ 20h
TheAromaofBooks @KAO - Switzerland has a lot of dramatic settings, so it definitely helps 😂 11h
TheAromaofBooks @Sparklemn - Right? And why said healthy young man would just... let her?? 11h
KAO @TheAromaofBooks I guess you‘re right! My own experiences there have been quite limited and significantly less dramatic in a “great setting for a horror story” sense! 😂 7h
TheAromaofBooks @KAO - Ooooo I would love to visit Switzerland! I am sure photographs do not do it justice! 9m
Seabreeze_Reader @Clare-Dragonfly Those were my thoughts, too! He claims to be wretched but then basically does nothing. By this point, Victor should have been trying to track down his creation, knowing what will likely happen again. 6m

ElizaMarie @dabbe yeah he is very #OutOfSightOutIOfMind about this creature 3d
KAO It‘s unbelievable how the creature is simply not a concern! I kept waiting for comments indicating Victor‘s worry—or at least curiosity!! 3d

dabbe Victor, Victor ... you had to know that reattaching parts from corpses and then sewing them back together was not going to produce a handsome creature. You ran away because he's ugly? Or did you run away from yourself and the fact that you just tried to play God over the universe? You literally have messed with Mother Nature, and she's gonna get ugly on your ass. #mytwocents 4d

dabbe Maybe the moms die to spur the children to grow up and go on their quest. Victor's mom definitely did that for him. I find it interesting, too, that Victor ignores the warnings of his first professor, Krempe, just as Walton seems to ignore Victor: both are blinded by their ambition to gain glory. Walton wants to find the northwest passage, and Victor wants to aid society through science. As @BarkingMadRead knowingly said, #whatcouldgowrong? 6d

dabbe #mytwocents Two versions of FRANKENSTEIN were published: one in 1818, and one in 1831. The more popular one is the 1831 version. In that one, Elizabeth is “adopted“, but in the 1818 version, she was Alphonse's niece and Victor's real cousin. By 1831, Shelley had experienced the death of two children and her husband, which gave her a more pessimistic view on the story and made her more morally cautious. She also softened Victor's character. 1w
Clare-Dragonfly @dabbe I wondered which version I had—Project Gutenberg wasn‘t clear! Now I know I have the 1831 text. What an interesting change. Thank you! 1w
dabbe @Clare-Dragonfly I hoped the Elizabeth distinction would help! Not a lot of issues list the publication date! No idea why. 😍 1w

dabbe #mytwocents Having “The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner“ be one of Walton's favorite poems is crucial to his meeting of the “stranger.“ Just like the mariner, who has a tale to tell (a la Jacob Marley in A CHRISTMAS CAROL), the stranger also has a story to tell to ward off the ambition of Walton in his pursuit of seaworthy excellence. This is such a small book with such big ideas. The Creature, although driven to perform evil deeds, is not in himself evil, which a lot of adaptations omit (I am looking forward to the new one to see if they change this). A lot of this book discusses the loneliness of existence and how others treat those who are different, which is relatable to many. Truly a masterpiece.

First off, it was interesting that the book was a story within a story and had 3 narrators (Walton, Frankenstein, and the Creature). That was something I wasn‘t expecting but it worked.

The star of the story was the Creature (aka Frankenstein‘s monster). The Creature was the epitome of being othered. He was so misunderstood and just wanted to belong and feel loved.

Okay, so they think all of this is most likely cancer instead of a side effect of the radiation she had a year ago. She‘s going to have a radiation treatment tomorrow. In about a week, she could start getting the strength back in her legs, but the neurological symptoms could stay like they are now. The goal is to get her to where she can come back home. It‘s not the best news, but there is some hope. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics Don‘t even get me started on how horribly Frankenstein treated his “monster.” I know the joke about Frankenstein not being the name of the monster, but I honestly think he was a monster to his creature. Had he treated this creature he had the hubris to make in the first place with a modicum of humanity, it wouldn‘t have been a monster at all and the book would have been so much shorter. #MaryShelley #Frankenstein #audiobook #Wednesday 1mo
Prairiegirl_reading I read with a number of years ago with my book club and also didn‘t enjoy it. One thing I remember about our discussion was one woman complaining about the doctor and “he had the vapours every five minutes.” I just always imagine him on a fainting couch. 🤣 1mo
GingerAntics @Prairiegirl_reading 🤣😂🤣 I love that! He really did have the vapours constantly! Like, dude, buck up! You get all these like dead body parts and you‘re fine, but then this thing you‘ve made expects you to show him some humanity and QUEUE THE VAPOURS!!! 🙄🤣😂🤣 1mo
IriDas Sorrý about the dx. I hope she can come home soon. And, yes, Dr Frankenstein is the real monster, which was the point of both versions. Bad parenting, bad science, they all lead to bad ends, I guess. :) 1mo

I have just discovered the joys of the Netflix show Wednesday this week… so now I am reading books that remind me of Wednesday!
#MaryShelley #Frankenstein #audiobook #Wednesday

GingerAntics I read this back in 2016 for a seminar on antiheroes… but these first few chapters… I don‘t remember them at all. 2mo
IriDas Is this the same version you read? There are two. She changed quite a bit of the first part with the second version. 2mo
GingerAntics @IriDas I genuinely don‘t remember this beginning part. I mostly remember the dog sled and the monster running along side, maybe chasing him. I just have this very vivid mental image of that part. 2mo
See All 9 Comments
IriDas Oh, you mean the letters to the sister? 2mo
IriDas Here‘s a good article about the two versions: https://stanforddaily.com/2018/11/29/frankenstein-and-its-transformations/ But if it‘s about remembering the sledge, it might just be what stuck in your mind the most. I‘ve read it multiple times, both versions, and I can see that being something a person would keep over the letters. 😊 2mo
GingerAntics @IriDas I remember painting this very vivid imagine in my mind of it, and over time that‘s all that has remained. It does seem like he‘s writing letters to his sister… I think. This is the first time I‘ve listened this on audio, so I‘m thinking it hits a little different. 2mo
AnnCrystal Wednesday 👏🏼🤩👍🏼 the first season was too good! Hope to one day catch the second season 📺💝. The first season was filmed in Romania and the second was filmed in Ireland. Don't know why, but I found this to be interesting. 2mo
GingerAntics @AnnCrystal I did not know any of that! They released season 2 in two parts. 🙄 The second half drops 9/3, so I‘m trying SO HARD to hold off until then to watch any of season 2. 🫰🏻🫰🏻 (edited) 2mo
AnnCrystal @GingerAntics I would do that l as well...the first part probably has some kind of cliffhanger. Please review once you do watch 😉👌🏼📺💝. 2mo

dabbe We scored the same! 😍 “House of Usher“ is one of my faves! If you're into campy movies, the 1960 one starring Vincent Price is a hoot, and it's free on YouTube! Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmEbH7mZ8Vk&t=63s

ChaoticMissAdventures @dabbe I am grateful for my college years reading Rousseau and Marquis de Sade for this score. I know they did a new House of Usher recently with the gorgeous Rahul Kohli, I might make reading and watching these my next classics challenge! 5mo

You are at a huge advantage if you have not read a ton of Terry Pratchett or the UK children's writer Jacqueline Wilson, which I have not.
3 favorites:
Frankenstein
Atonement
The Forsyth Saga .....or Dorian Grey.

BooksandCoffee4Me Oh, Dabbe , your haiku poignantly hit the heart of the texts. I hope you‘re sharing these with students if you‘re teaching (sorry I can‘t remember if you are). 6mo
dabbe @BooksandCoffee4Me You just made my day, week, month ... TY! I've been having such fun writing these. I am retired now, so I won't be sharing them with my students (alas), but I'm saving them just for me! My husband's had to listen to all of them, too. 🤣🤩😍 6mo
BooksandCoffee4Me @dabbe it‘s so hard being a retired teacher because I still have so much I want to share with high schoolers. I‘m in the first year so I guess that‘s normal. I even dreamt about a parent conference two nights ago — it went well, by the way. 😂 6mo

dabbe @BooksandCoffee4Me I felt the exact same way my first year. I even subbed quite a bit and was an AP proctor just so I could go back and hang with the students. Now in my 4th year of retirement, I am completely done with it all! I subbed one day last year for freshmen all day, and that completely did me in. 🤦🏼‍♀️ I'm glad your conference dream went well. My school dreams (which I still have) are nightmares about uncontrollable classrooms. 🤣 6mo
wanderinglynn Fantastic! I really do hope you put these together into a book. 6mo
dabbe @wanderinglynn I think I just might! 🤩 6mo

My next Toastmasters speech will be based on one of the many themes on humanity found in my favorite book, #frankenstein

Texreader You‘re in Toastmasters? How awesome! I was in it for many many years 6mo
IriDas @Texreader Yes, I just joined last year. It‘s been really helpful. Pretty sure it helped me finally get a job after a year of unemployment. 6mo
Texreader @IriDas That‘s awesome. I often use everything I learned in toastmasters in my career. And I‘m so glad you‘ve joined Litsy! 6mo

Bit late with a spooky read but still did it!
So unlike the popular tropes of Frankenstein and included swathes of nature descption and landscape.
I'd not read it before so feel it was needed.

dabbe I adore this book. 💛🤎🧡 11mo
mcctrish I read this and listened to a live reading of it on its 200th anniversary and I have to say it holds up 11mo
rachaich Yes, agree. It's so telling about misappropriation of power and technology. 11mo
