George Orwell's dystopian masterpiece, Nineteen Eighty-Four is perhaps the most pervasively influential book of the twentieth century, making famous Big Brother, newspeak and Room 101. 'Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past'

Francophones! Last year, Gallimard published a “new“ translation of 1984, touted as the best yet, but within weeks experts found it was just a better stylised version of the canonical translation. Mssing sentences, contradictions between paragraphs. TL;DR don't buy that one. Éditions de la rue Dorion have just released a true new translation by Célia Izoard, who knows her stuff. Get that one.

Mehso-so

Finished this book a couple days ago. I wasn‘t overwhelmed to be honest. And it could be because I set the bar too high. Orwell discusses the same concept with Animal Farm, wherein there‘s always a higher and lower society and that history always ends up “changing”. If you ask me, both are similar and unique in a way. But #animalfarm is still my favorite.

rretzler Interesting take. I read both books many years ago, and 1984 was one of my favorites. I always felt that Animal Farm was Orwell's commentary on the politics of that time (more specifically the Russian revolution,) while 1984, having some similarities, was his take on where he felt the future might be going. I have found it prophetic in many ways over the years as we sacrifice personal freedom for “protection“, especially as technology is developed 2w
vumblereads @rretzler Yes I think that‘s a big discussion revolving around the book. I guess I should give it more credit knowing that it was written earlier than it was 1984. When Winston, the main character, started reading Goldstein‘s book, it reminded me so much of Animal Farm. 🙂 2w
gilroyc I always felt that 1984 was a touch more subtle than Animal Farm. 2w
See All 6 Comments
vumblereads Subtle in what way @gilroyc ? 🙂 2w
gilroyc Personal opinion: Animal Farm is a steady dropping of bricks as the pigs are constantly betraying their original thoughts. 1984 has more of a thriller feel with when and how, so the bricks are slid in, rather than dropped. 2w
vumblereads @gilroyc 😂 yes they‘re always changing their opinions and everyone else is dumb enough to believe it, but it‘s just like in 1984! One minute they‘re at war with Eurasia, the next they‘re at war with Eastasia and they were never ever at war with eurasia 🤷🏻‍♀️ I get it George Orwell, people lied to you! 😅 2w

I‘m really struggling with 1984. It picks up and then it drags, on and off. Currently at 54%. I‘m debating whether I should DNF and watch the movie.

Jeralyn I was the same way, but I had to read it for school so I stuck it out. I cannot tell you how mind-blowing the ending is, I literally can't. There's this point in the novel where it tells you everything, things that you didn't even know you were confused about. I would say it's worth the read even though most of it seemed pointlessly sad to me, if you get to the end you will understand why this book is at such a high standing. 3w
vumblereads @Jeralyn and that‘s really the only reason why it keeps me going, otherwise I would‘ve given up 😅 3w
Jeralyn After 1984 it was like I understood the world for once and everything made sense. I would say that after all the hype I'm giving it, it's still not one of my favorite books at all, but I definitely think it's one of those books everyone should read. I think that maybe if everyone read it and understood it, the world would change for the better, as long as it's not too far gone that is. 3w

“It was a bright, cold day in April and the clocks were striking thirteen.” Somehow I made it my whole life to this point without having read this book. I had no idea what I was missing! Eerily relevant to today‘s world, if anyone has not yet read this classic, you should!

I decided to embark on a journey through BBC‘s top 100 books to read before you die and selected 1984 (I know what you are thinking...Didn‘t I read that book in high school?!—nope). Anyway about 3/4th in the book took quite a sharp left turn and it sort of disappointed me because I liked the path it was on...but I will say the end got me thinking (isn‘t that the point anyway?). As BBC says, you should read before you die.
