Y‘all. @dabbe made us a beautiful schedule to get us through the longer chapters. I will probably only post on the days we finish a chapter, in case anyone reads it all at once or in a different way, but one never knows 🤷🏻‍♀️ #hashtagbrigade

Bookwormjillk Thanks @barkingmadread @dabbe these chapters are delightful but some are so long! 2d
mcctrish Okay posting when we finish a chapter makes me breath a happy sigh, I‘m on my kindle and I legit have no tracking vibes with it - I really do love paper books best 😆 2d

dabbe @BarkingMadRead I was looking over the chapters, and a few of them are 40-60 pages. I'm okay powering through, but I do have a modified reading schedule if anyone is interested; we'd still finish well before the end of September. Starting with tomorrow, here it is:
9/13: Ch. 5, first half
9/14: Ch. 5, second half
9/15: Book 2/Ch. 1
9/16: Ch. 2
9/17: Ch. 3
9/18: Book 3/Ch. 1, first half
9/19: Ch. 1, second half
9/20: Ch. 2
9/21: Ch. 3 ⬇️
2d
dabbe 9/22: Ch. 4
9/23: Ch. 5, first half
9/24: Ch. 5, second half
9/25: Epilogue

This is only a suggestion that I thought I'd share. 🧡💜💛
2d
Cuilin I can‘t remember if this is my third or fourth time reading this book, but I cannot figure out Ryder‘s father!! he just exudes sarcasm, right? Also, Cordelia is hilarious. “I can‘t spare you a whole rosary you know. Just a decade.” 2d
BarkingMadRead @dabbe I love this, thanks for figuring it out! I will make a separate post and tag everyone so that nobody misses it 2d
Ruthiella @Cuilin This is only my second time reading it. I do recall on first reading it how I thought Charles relationship was his father was sad and lonely, but on the second reading I kind of think that Ryder Sr. is doing the right thing by encouraging (in his way) Charles to live within his means (which are very generous 740 in 1925!?!!) and get him out of the house and living his own life. Plus, he likes Sebastian - later chapters will prove. 2d
mcctrish I love Cordelia! Sebastien stuttering “Charles, Charles! It‘s Mr Ryder” Cordelia “Charles, meet me ……” I‘m getting Flavia vibes! I love a precocious tween girl 2d
Cuilin @Ruthiella yeah I agree with this assessment. I do think he was trying to encourage Charles to live within his means and also to use his summer appropriately, maybe get a job and then he could afford go to the theater, etc.. plus I also think Charles though aware of his father‘s loneliness, doesn‘t write to him. 2d
dabbe @mcctrish 🎯♥️🎯 2d
Clare-Dragonfly I love Cordelia! She knows what she wants and goes for it. 2d
ElizaMarie I love Cordelia and her rosary!!! She is such a fun character 2d
lil1inblue @willaful Loved the wine tasting! 🤣🤣🤣 I just love this book. 1d

Bookwormjillk I haven‘t finished the chapter yet but those dinner scenes had me rolling. I love this book. 3d
Ruthiella In my limited experience, this chapter with its snarky humor is more typical of his other novels (The Loved One and A Handful of Dust). 3d
See All 18 Comments
mcctrish If surviving dinners with his father does not encourage savings going forward, nothing will 3d
willaful Dad is a piece of work! Though given that he already provided Charles with an ample allowance, I can't entirely blame him for playing dumb.

So I'm guessing Charles used up the last of his money rushing to Sebastian's bedside? Hmmm....
3d
dabbe @mcctrish 😂😂😂 3d
dabbe I can't help but compare Charles and Sebastian's relationship to Gene and Finny's in A SEPARATE PEACE, though this one they're in college, and there's definitely more humor. Pretty much similar time periods as well. And how dumb am I? I had no idea Mr. Waugh pronounced his name as EVE-luhn. I'm thoroughly enjoying this book. 3d
Clare-Dragonfly I don‘t believe a word anyone says in this book. This is not a complaint. 3d
Clare-Dragonfly Why didn‘t Sebastian invite Charles earlier if he wanted him around so badly?! 😂 Also, dunno if Dad is thinking explicitly “hmm, perhaps my son is gay” but I love him commenting that he wouldn‘t turn up at his friend‘s deathbed because the friend‘s wife wouldn‘t like it. 3d
KAO I chuckled aloud when I read Sebastian‘s brief letter to Charles actually dated: “I wonder what day it is”—and I thought to myself that I could easily and honestly date my next letter to a friend this same way instead of checking my calendar to give the impression that I have my life under control with an accurate date! (edited) 3d
KAO I‘m enjoying this book too—and am pleasantly surprised by the amount of humor! 3d
ElizaMarie @willaful I agree! I think the dad is purposely playing dumb about the $ because he knows his son squandered it away —- I love the dad‘s attitude! (edited) 3d
ElizaMarie So far the book is pretty funny! These characters! @Clare-Dragonfly I don‘t believe anyone either!!!! All the dramatics! 3d
Sparklemn @KAO This was my favorite line of the chapter! 😆 3d
lil1inblue I so agree with @bookwormjillk the dinner scenes were uproariously hilarious. I love Waugh's humor! 2d
lil1inblue @dabbe You're nailing these comparisons! It's been a while, but I definitely feel hints of A Separate Peace. 2d
willaful @KAO yes, that was a hoot... And very Sebastian, I think. 2d

Cuilin There‘s so much commentary online about this novel that I decided to annotate it!! Loved “The sun was behind us as we drove, so that we seemed to be in pursuit of our own shadows.” 5d
Bookwormjillk @Cuilin I have never read this. I'll have to go back and read all the commentary after. 5d

TheBookHippie @Cuilin I got a new copy so I could flag it up 🤣🙌🏼 5d
Cuilin @TheBookHippie We need to share what we‘re flagging somehow. I have five different themes that I‘m annotating. I don‘t want to put spoilers in the chat! I‘ll tag you in a spoiler post perhaps 🤔 5d
TheBookHippie @Cuilin I think flagging is my book love language 🤣😅 I generally do quotes to print out -quotes to write on and quotes to ponder 😅🙃😊 5d
TheBookHippie @Cuilin I‘m also tracking the LGBTQIA undercurrent 5d
mcctrish I‘m here for the flagging - I only watched this before and I replaced my childhood teddy with a brand new Gund at the time and named him Elliot. He went everywhere with me. 5d
Cuilin @mcctrish 🧸 cute. I loved the TV adaptation more than the movie. 5d
Cuilin @Bookwormjillk I recommend, it‘s interesting. 5d
mcctrish @Cuilin I only watched the mini series - I was in Grade 12 but now I might try and dig up the movie 5d
Cuilin @mcctrish It‘s good. I think Emma Thompson (love) plays Sebastian‘s mom, but I don‘t think anybody can play Ryder like Jeremy Irons. 5d
ElizaMarie I‘m enjoying the ride so far —- but have no idea what I‘m reading or where this story is going. I feel like I‘m reading into the “friendship” as more? But maybe it‘s just me. We will see —- also have not seen the movie or read any reviews so fresh eyes here! —- these books yall pick are generally not something I‘ve ever ventured towards before (part of the fun) 5d
Bookwormjillk @ElizaMarie not just you 5d
dabbe @mcctrish 💜🩶🧡 5d
dabbe The way Ryder describes Sebastian re: his beauty reminds me of Nick describing Jay Gatsby. Definitely more feelings going on here. 💜🩶🧡 5d
Bookwormjillk @dabbe do you think Nick had feelings for Gatsby? 5d
lil1inblue @Cuilin I highlighted the same passage. Such stunning writing. 😍 5d
lil1inblue @TheBookHippie "flagging is my book love language" makes me feel seen. ? #hardsame 5d
lil1inblue @dabbe Ooh. Interesting comparison. I also got Dorian Gray vibes. Definite feelings. 💖 5d
dabbe @lil1inblue Ooh, good one, too! 🧡🩶💜 5d
dabbe @Bookwormjillk I seriously do. There is also an inference to a sexual encounter between Nick and Mr. McKee in chapter 2. The narrative ends with an ellipsis (...) after Nick and Mr. McKee leave a party, suggesting a passage of time and a sexual encounter. This is supported by details like Nick being in the bedroom and Mr. McKee being in his underwear, which would have been unusual for two heterosexual men to be in that situation in the 1920s. (edited) 5d
dabbe @Bookwormjillk I also think so because of his relationship with Jordan, a tomboy-ish female who plays golf. And that relationship doesn't work out, nor did his one with the girl back home. He seems in love with Gatsby or the idea of him. All inferences, but hard ones to ignore. 5d
lil1inblue @dabbe @Bookwormjillk Now I want to re-read Gatsby. I read it in school in the 90s, so we obviously didn't explore homosexual themes (gasp! 😱🤣 ). I see what you mean, Denise, but don't remember details. 🤔 5d
dabbe @lil1inblue 💜🩶🧡 5d
Bookwormjillk @lil1inblue @dabbe I‘ll have to pay more attention next time I re-read! 5d
dabbe @Bookwormjillk Whoah! Please forgive the overzealous teacher in me! I never picked up on that when I first read it. It's only after YEARS of teaching it that my brain (and wormhole digging) got me to this point. I hate sounding like a know-it-all. I'm so sorry. 🧡💜💛 5d
Bookwormjillk @dabbe no! I appreciate it. I love Gatsby and I re-read it every year so I‘m happy to have a new angle to look at. Thank you! 4d
Clare-Dragonfly Oh good, I‘m so glad I‘m not the only one seeing the subtext (and that it will get even more explicit)! When Sebastian was wearing Ryder‘s tie I was like “it can‘t be, this is a WWII novel” and then the teddy bear and he‘s weird but charms everyone and one of his friends at the party is an aesthete… and then the aesthete tells SEBASTIAN that he‘d like to fill him full of ARROWS… and I‘m delighted that it‘s totally gay. 🏳️‍🌈😁 4d

Cuilin Archer 0 points May 💯 points!!!! From watching the Gilded Age, divorced women were completely ostracized, so ladies had to have their wits about them. 2w
willaful Archer was always trapped. He's just been feebly struggling instead of gnawing his own leg off like Ellen did. 2w

Ruthiella @willaful Totally agree! 👍 2w
lil1inblue @willaful Very true. And in many ways, he's trapped in his own mind, as well! 2w
Bookwormjillk @willaful you got it 2w
Bookwormjillk Also I bailed on this book once before so this is my first time getting to the end. I wish I had known how much I would love this. Thanks @barkingmadread 2w
Clare-Dragonfly At the beginning when one of the moms expressed concern about May overexerting herself I was like oh, she‘s definitely pregnant and got REALLY mad at Archer. But then at the end of the chapter it turns out he had no idea, but she used it to get rid of Ellen! Clever May, self-sacrificing Ellen. 2w
Clare-Dragonfly @willaful Ooh, well put. 2w
dabbe I think I'm the only one here who wishes/ed (I've read it before) that Ellen and Archer would work out. That would mean them both bucking their society for the love they feel for one another. And yes, the only one who would be hurt would be May, but I somehow think she'd find a way to move on--or she'd shoot Archer dead with an arrow. Which is pretty much what her being pregnant has done to him. 🤔 2w
BarkingMadRead @dabbe as someone who was recently cheated on and dumped, i think it all sucks 😆 but if he‘s not happy, he should leave first and then have all the feels. This dancing around and flirting is childish and stupid 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2w
dabbe @BarkingMadRead Agree 💯. He knew he had feelings for Ellen BEFORE he married May; he should have never married her. She even gave him an out! He is the most frustrating and egotistical character, and I think I'm biased towards him because of Day-Lewis.
P.S. I am beyond sorry about your ex and what happened to you. It does suck--totally. 🧡🩶💛
2w
BarkingMadRead @dabbe DDL is a delight for sure 😍 2w
ElizaMarie Ugh @BarkingMadRead cheaters suck - I am so sorry you went through that 2w
mcctrish Archer is so frustrating! I wish like @dabbe that Ellen and he would get together against the odds. May only wins that he stays and is miserable and she‘s worth more than that 2w
dabbe @mcctrish All three of them deserve someone they love and who loves them. So tragic this story is! #channelingyoda 💛💜🧡 2w

Clare-Dragonfly I think Ellen intended to leave when she made the plan to hook up with Archer! She‘s always sacrificing herself for him (and May), which is good because he can‘t be bothered. And I keep thinking May is pregnant (remember the blushing when someone was making jokes about her children?), but it hasn‘t been made clear yet. 2w

lil1inblue It's a shame Archer doesn't recognize how very clever May actually is. 2w
ElizaMarie I kinda felt a little bit better that Archer was potentially gonna confess - but felt it was #TooLate. Also I do like the idea of wearing your wedding dress out- I used to wear mine on anniversaries (I was married by Elvis - my dress is more a summer white lace type of thing - not an extravagant dress) 2w
dabbe @ElizaMarie Okay, I have to hear more about being married by Elvis. Inquiring mind is dying to know! 😂 2w
willaful Oh yeah, I was expecting a knitting needle confession before Archer did his, but clever May didn't even need it... 2w
mcctrish I thought for sure Archer was going to try and confess and then May was going to tell him she‘s pregnant but this is better - archer played by Ellen and May #keepyoureyesinyourowndamnhead 2w
KAO @ElizaMarie @dabbe “Married by Elvis”?!? Please tell us more! 2w
ElizaMarie @KAO @Dabbe ♥️♥️♥️My husband and I eloped and got married in Vegas by an Elvis impersonator. We had been engaged 3 months and while I was on a travel assignment he booked the Vegas trip for us and surprised me (we had already talked about eloping) - so I went to Macys the day before the flight and bought a white summer dress and some white keds. On our 5yr anniversary we renewed our vows (by Elvis) and my mom came (his parents opted not to) 2w

Clare-Dragonfly Archer is so nonsensical about May. He can‘t stand to read her poetry because she‘ll come up with her own opinions. But he also can‘t stand to talk to her because he knows everything she‘s thinking and he‘s bored! Make up your mind, jerk! 2w

lil1inblue @Cuilin I do have a smidgeon of sympathy for May because she's a woman in a misogynistic world. Yes, she's entrenched in the old ways, but look what happens to women who aren't (like Ellen). 2w
Cuilin @lil1inblue of course you‘re right. Though I admire Ellen for dancing outside the lines. But yes it wasn‘t easy for May either. 2w
willaful I think they were all doomed to be unhappy but it's largely Archer's fault. He knew better and he still went ahead and married May. 2w

BookwormAHN I remember reading this in 4th grade and the first few pages terrified me but I also remember me and my mother getting in an argument on how to spell damn and me showing it to her in the book 😸 2w

AllDebooks This one hit me hardest. I thought the pace was goid and added to the tension. My heart broke for Cujo. I was incensed at Tad's parents for not being more supportive. Both of them had the heebie jeebies around the cupboard and noticed the awful smell. There is no rational explanation, but I would not be putting my child in that room. 2w

Ruthiella When I first read this book, some decades ago, I was much more sympathetic to Archer…less so now for sure. 2w
Cuilin @Ruthiella It‘s a great line. We‘re just older and wiser now. 😆 2w
dabbe @Ruthiella I was, too. And as much as I love Winona, I was never a fan of May. All three play their parts in this society the way they're supposed to--on the outer level at least. Those stays are tied so tightly around them they can't be and get what they really want. What a frustrating time period. 2w
Ruthiella @dabbe Totally agree. I saw May as manipulative then. Now I consider her position differently. 2w
lil1inblue Archer leaving the carriage felt like such a tantrum. He doesn't get what he wants, so he leaves. #bigbaby 2w
ElizaMarie @Ruthiella I can see May as being manipulative, but.. I feel a lot of her behavior is justified. (But -- I never watched the movie or read the book before this readathon) - I wonder if I would be like a lot of y'all with changes in perspective. 2w
KAO This is also my first time to read the book, and I‘ve never seen the movie. I honestly feel sorry for May, Archer, and Ellen. They all are just so very stifled at the least (or downright trapped at the most) by the society and customs of that era. I guess that‘s the point of it all. #heavysigh 2w

lil1inblue @Bookwormjillk I nearly cheered aloud for May! 😏 😏 😏 #archerisoutmatched 3w
lil1inblue “[Archer] felt, no doubt, more sorry for her than her indignant relatives; but it seemed to him that the tie between husband and wife, even if breakable in prosperity, should be indissoluble in misfortune.“ That's so rich coming from a #cheatingcheaterwhocheats, and it's interesting that he doesn't apply the same logic to Ellen. 3w
dabbe @lil1inblue Amazing how sympathetic one can be towards the one that the heart wants, isn't it? 😏 3w

ElizaMarie Okay, so May suspects, but what does she do about it? Do you think she is siding with the family against Ellen because of this suspicion? Like, secretly (or not so), she wants Ellen to be destitute, to financial and societal ruin? Or just to get her to leave? Either way? 3w
See All 13 Comments
Bookwormjillk @ElizaMarie The passage with may at the end where it said what she said in one phrase and then said what she meant in about 2 paragraphs was so interesting. I'm not sure she even knows what she wants though other than to maybe keep up appearances and practice archery in peace? 3w
Cuilin “They smell less if one blows them out”!!!!!!! Methinks May wants rid of Ellen. (edited) 3w
mcctrish I love how Archer knows exactly what May is saying even though she‘s saying nothing, AS IF! Nobody talks about anything, how would he know what goes unspoken #utternonsense but his guilt is talking loud in his head, that‘s for sure 3w
lil1inblue @Cuilin 🎯😏 3w
lil1inblue @mcctrish Exactly! His arrogance is beyond the pale. #dick 3w
lil1inblue “Archer's New York tolerated hypocrisy in private relations; but in business matters it exacted a limpid and impeccable honesty.“ So Beaufort can be a #cheatingcheaterwhocheats at home and no one gives a fork, but he can't fail in business! How horrid! #shameshame 3w
mcctrish @lil1inblue at least they are worrying about Beaufort‘s wife now being left penniless ( as opposed to when he was gallivanting around town and throwing money at women who weren‘t her) 3w
lil1inblue @mcctrish I felt like they were less worried about Beaufort's wife, and more worried about the disgrace to the family name. #horrors 3w

Cuilin “… bursting with the belated eloquence of the inarticulate” anybody else have “belated” conversations in their head? 1mo
Bookwormjillk Popcorn time. Can‘t wait to see how this plays out. 1mo
mcctrish @Cuilin I have most of mine in the shower but middle of the night works too 1mo
Cuilin @mcctrish same. 🤦‍♀️ 1mo
dabbe @Cuilin More than I care to admit. 😂 1mo
willaful I think Archer is in kind of fascinating position. He's intrigued by Ellen because she not in the “innocent maid“ trap that May is but he's also still heavily influenced by the double standards of his day. I suspect he'll end up hating himself for wanting her unless he can grow a schmecker. 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly I‘m so confused by his comment about the State not liking Ellen‘s plans. Was it illegal then to marry an affair partner? Or to remarry after a divorce? Neither makes sense to me, but maybe the first a little more. 1mo
nanuska_153 I am a lawyer and I got really excited when he got the file, to then realise that I wasn't going to read the file and get disappointed for not reading the details 😅 1mo
lil1inblue @nanuska_153 I love that. 😅 🍿 1mo
lil1inblue @Cuilin So many belated conversations. Like @mcctrish said, the shower and the middle of the night are, of course, the best time to have them. Also, in the car on the way to work. Because you gotta start the day right. 🤣🤯🫠 1mo
mcctrish @lil1inblue absolutely start the day strong 🤣 1mo
ElizaMarie @Clare-Dragonfly - I was wondering that too. If you can't remarry with the person you had an affair with ... imagine how many people wouldn't have 2nd marriages (in today's cynical world). But also, wonder who she had an affair with? It has to be someone we know? 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly @ElizaMarie I don‘t think it‘s someone we know—Archer has referred a couple times to her husband‘s secretary who helped her escape. He thinks that who she had the affair with. 1mo
ElizaMarie @Clare-Dragonfly ooo yes that's true!!! I had forgotten about that! 1mo

mcctrish Women should be free like men, but not actually free if it means being ‘unpleasant‘ 1mo
Cuilin “For the first time he perceived how elementary his own principles had always been” “ I think that‘s for her to decide” a smidgen of growth perhaps? 1mo
dabbe @Cuilin One can hope! 🤞🏻 1mo
dabbe Lordy, I can just stare at this pic of DDL all day long. #theperfectarcher #theperfectanythingforthatmatter 1mo
BarkingMadRead @dabbe he really is delightful looking 😍 1mo
TheAromaofBooks I actually don't think Archer is a bad dude (at this point) - he's just always thought what he's been told to always think. And actually we see glimpses of him wanting something more with May - hoping that she will enjoy travel and discussions, but frustrated because she's always been told that she shouldn't enjoy those things. I feel a little bad for him, even knowing I'll probably end up despising him later 😂 1mo
willaful @TheAromaofBooks I feel the same. Admittedly the bar is low, but he's not the worst. 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly Wow I hate this. If there‘s no difference whether she gets the divorce or not why prevent her from getting a divorce?!?! And deliberately putting the one guy in the firm with a connection to the case on it? Talk about a conflict of interest (that wouldn‘t exist if they were only looking at the legal aspects of the case). I will never hire them, that‘s for sure! 1mo
eeclayton @TheAromaofBooks @willaful I feel the same, too. I think it's the first time in his life when he really starts questioning things. 1mo
willaful @eeclayton yes, and many people in his situation never get there. 1mo
eeclayton @willaful So true! 1mo
ElizaMarie This chapter made me value Archer. Although he agrees divorce is unbecoming, I praise him for not wanting to fully speak on this until he speaks with Ellen first. I love that it appears he cares for her thoughts on this matter (unlike her whole family!) 1mo
