Shakespeare has entered the chat! Caroline spends the evening with Hortense and Robert, and Coriolanus becomes the driver of romance, admonition, and maybe a bunch of foreshadowing?? Will the citizens rebel and will Moore refuse to heed their suffering? Will he be overthrown? Will a female family member push him to be peaceful at last?? Anyway, cast your vote for your fave bloody general of the 4 above - McKellen, Hiddleston, Fiennes, or Branagh?

eeclayton Following up on yesterday's conversation: Moore actually went the Willoughby way and enjoyed some literature with her 😁
Definitely Hiddleston.

Andrea313 @eeclayton Next we'll see them wax rhapsodic about the sonnets. 😂 Solid choice on Hiddleston, though I'd just about give an arm or leg to have seen McKellan. 16h

Where is Shirley? asks the #hashtagbrigade taking a minute out of my wheel spinning aka starting a million things, getting nothing done to read today‘s chapter ‘Coriolanus‘ Shakespeare? and no Shirley no doubt and I‘m wondering “is this where heavens to Murgatroyd “ came from? I‘ve never seen this name in print before but I‘ve heard it ( Bugs Bunny I‘m sure, where all my knowledge comes from )

BookishMarginalia Love the pic and the mug! 21h
mcctrish @BookishMarginalia I bought one for my sister too, they were table favours at Christmas and we drank our wine from them 21h
Bookwormjillk Bugs Bunny for the win 21h

Bookwormjillk Chapter 6 and I am finally starting to understand who some of these people are. 24h

Ruthiella I wonder if C and R will marry and are Shirley‘s parents? 22h
mcctrish How old is Robert? Not that things like this matter in these olden times 🙄 and #horriblehortense IS insufferable 21h
eeclayton @Ruthiella that's a good theory! 20h
eeclayton @mcctrish in his early thirties, if I remember well 20h
ElizaMarie So I was confused about Moore, like does he like her or just likes her attention and is playing with her. Up till the end of the chapter I thought that he was playing with her- but then his last comment —- 20h
Bookwormjillk @Ruthiella Oh, good thought! 19h
lil1inblue @ElizaMarie I get so many shady vibes from Moore! I think he likes that she likes him, but doesn't necessarily like her. But I guess we shall see! 19h
willaful @lil1inblue I'm a romantic so I prefer to think he's in love against his will and will find out! On the other hand, I see no happy ending for them. 18h
lil1inblue @willaful I could see that, as well, now that you mention it! I dislike his inconsistency with her, but I see where it could be because of conflict. But since it's a Bronte, I agree that there will be no happy ending. 😂 17h
Clare-Dragonfly I cackled out loud—don‘t know why I didn‘t think of this Coriolanus 🤣 They read an ENTIRE Shakespeare play and still had time for music and poetry?! I guess these English winter evenings are long but wow… 15h

We have a LOT to unpack in today's chapter! We meet Moore's self-important sister, Hortense who venerates her brother but hates the local villagers. To be fair, they laughed in her face when my good sis rocked up to church in her finest wooden clogs. But in between the family talk, we see that Robert engages in the practice of the day of hiring literal CHILDREN in his mill and also is maybe hitting on a child, 17 year old Caroline Helstone. 😬

Tamra Can you imagine breaking those in? 😅 2d
BarkingMadRead Those shoes are 🔥🔥 I don‘t know what anyone is complaining about 🤣 2d

Andrea313 @Tamra It would be such hell! 2d
Andrea313 @BarkingMadRead Right?? Anyone coming to the function in those has my total admiration. 2d
eeclayton Well, agewise it's similar to the Marianne/Brandon situation. 2d
Andrea313 @eeclayton Definitely! And of course not generally uncommon at the time. Let's hope Moore wears a flannel waistcoat and turns Caroline right off! 2d

willaful I keep wanting to go look up who Shirley is and then thinking, “no, no, I'm keen to guess!“ 2d

Ruthiella Definitely something going on between Caroline and Moore! Also, see how times have changed. Brontë has apparently no issue with child labor as long as they are not mistreated. 2d
BarkingMadRead @willaful exactly! When she arrives, we will have to throw a party 🤣 2d
Bookwormjillk Some day Shirley is going to show up and I hope we‘re not disappointed 2d
melissajayne Shirley arrives in Chapters 11 2d
eeclayton @Ruthiella that's a great point. She mentions it as something completely normal and acceptable. 2d
melissajayne @Bookwormjillk she shows up in Chapter 11 2d
Clare-Dragonfly @eeclayton Of course. It was, at the time. I have been on a ghost tour of an old cotton mill many times and the number of child ghosts… 2d
Clare-Dragonfly Apparently I was wrong about Shirley being Moore‘s sister! 2d
ElizaMarie I like the comment about asking the teen about attire. Caroline seems like a fun character 2d
mcctrish @Ruthiella I had to reread it, I was thinking why are all the children coming to the mill? Did I misread something? Is this school? Wait? Child labour? Oh it‘s okay to be dinged a penny for being the last to arrive cuz no one gets hit 🤷🏻‍♀️🤯 2d
Deblovestoread Sis has a very high opinion of herself… 1d
lil1inblue @mcctrish I kind of lost the thread for a minute myself. And your last sentence was almost my exact thought last night. 😳 23h

These dudes, with their love triangles, infighting, and grudges! Don't ever let anyone tell you men are not full-on bringing the drama all. the. damn. time. We learn more about Yorke today, and you know what? I mostly love him; I can hardly ever resist a "rebel and blasphemer". Alas, he also succumbs to the drama and the chapter ends with him angrily throwing everyone out of his house. These men - so emotional! #HashtagBrigade

Bklover No kidding! Where IS Shirley?! And is Shirley female? Back then (until the Shirley Temple era) Shirley was a man‘s name. Who knows. 🤔 3d

dabbe I thought LARK RISE was hard to get going ... but this ... 😳 3d
Bookwormjillk I‘m glad I‘m not the only one struggling with this. I thought it was just a post holiday potato coma or something 3d
lil1inblue @dabbe @bookwormjillk If I didn't know better, I would wonder if I'm reading the right book. Such a slow start! 3d
KAO Every time that the narrator addresses us directly as readers, I hear the voice of Lady Whistledown from the “Bridgerton” series in my head: “Dear Reader…”! 3d
ElizaMarie @KAO ooo me too! I kinda liked her addressing us throughout! 3d
Deblovestoread Same! It reminds me why I didn‘t make it very far the first time. She‘s got to be showing up soon! Was Brontë hoping this beginning would draw in the men? ? 3d
julieclair I‘m on the struggle bus too. Surely things will pick up soon… 2d
mcctrish I skipped reading yesterday because taking down Christmas sucked up all my time - lord above this is dry as a desert! @KAO I really wish some salacious gossip from Lady Whistledown would get interspersed with this #yorkeisintolerantofeverybody #shirleymustbeinudolpho @dabbe who knew we‘d miss Lark Rise @Deblovestoread does Charlotte not hate men? She writes them all as utter boors 2d

TheEllieMo @dabbe I haven‘t started it yet but I‘m planning on reading 3d
dabbe @TheEllieMo Ooh, excellent choice. I wonder if I can count it if I've already read it? 🤔 That's my favorite Wharton, and the movie is sublime as well. 3d
